Ah-Doyyy: ESPN President Realizes That a Sports Network Probably Shouldn't Be Interjecting Politics Into Every Other Segment

Woke-Broke: The Legendary Journeys.

Jim Geraghty quotes from an LA Times piece on ESPN's president:

"Without question our data tells us our fans do not want us to cover politics," Pitaro said. "My job is to provide clarity. I really believe that some of our 'talent' [ironic quotes added by me] was confused on what was expected of them. If you fast-forward to today, I don't believe they are confused."

I believe these jocksniffers still are confused, but maybe more about their barely-suppressed homoerotic achings for athletes' puds than about their need to provide leftwing color commentary after every fly ball.

Geraghty notes that "some of the most politically-active sports commentators have moved on to other things."

Lesser things. Heard from Keith Olbermann lately?

29 How will the world survive without guys in loud suits sitting at space desks yelling at each other?

Note: Keith Olbermann is back at ESPN. Of course.

100 Remember, this back in March?

http://tinyurl.com/y2zxuasp

Keith Olbermann received a talking to from ESPN, his employer, after demanding Mississippi Clarion-Ledger journalist Brian Broom be fired and encouraging an Internet mob to harass a 22-year-old hunter Broom wrote about for the outlet.

Get MLB.TV. You get to decide what feed you get, the home or the visitors', and even multiple audio feeds. When the announcers start thinking it's all about them, and indulge in "happy talk" about their golf games or their favorite bathhouses, I switch to just the game audio. Beautiful. 98 To an extent, I sympathize. What do you do with 24 hours on a sports network? Broadcast another insightful athlete or coach interview? "We have to give 110 percent. If we do that and can score more points than the other team, we'll win, Jesus willing." Broadcast some C-tier event that isn't already on the air because no one wants to watch it and for which little or no advertising can be sold? It's not like a lot of the on-air talent has key insights to relay to savvy fans. Today on my local fake news: Boston: A 1-Year Old Baby Is Hit By A Police Cruiser

It's on street surveillance camera. The cruiser is parked on the street behind another car, which show the other car's occupants outside their car doing stuff. The cruiser pulls out and drives off.

Lo and behold there's a child roaming into the street between the two cars and gets hit by the cruiser, gets knocked down.

A passerby runs over screaming and tends to the kid. The cruiser stops and the cop gets out see whatthefuck.

This alerts the mother of the child, and she runs over to her child, looks at the kid, and then runs towards the cop walking towards her. She does a flying body slam maneuver and bounces off the cop. Then runs back to her kid.

IT WAS HER FAULT. She's a terrible mother.

Anyway, the toddler had a broken collar bone, nothing else.

Broadcast some C-tier event that isn't already on the air because no one wants to watch it and for which little or no advertising can be sold? Probably the only profitable thing you could do when a top-tier sporting event isn't in progress is broadcast buxom chicks on trampolines."

Agreed. I think the political BS hastened their demise, but I think technology and other factors left them doomed, anyway. Thirty years ago, I watched SportsCenter, because where else could I get all the scores and highlights? Now, on my phone, I can get all the scores while the games are happening, and I can get all the highlights minutes later.

Also 30 years ago, I had to listen to ESPN's choice of what to show on SportsCenter and when to show it. So even though I think baseball is duller than paint drying, I had to suffer through all that talk. Now, if I want to hear about hockey, I turn to the NHL Network, for golf, there's the Golf Channel, etc. You also get far better in-depth analysis on other channels exclusively devoted to those sports, instead of halfwits like Dickie V or Barry Melrose, given 2 minutes to clown it up, before moving on to the next topic.

It has nothing to do with "making things better" which at least is oriented toward something positive (even if one could argue about the details). 192 "Can you imagine how much ESPN's revenues would drop if our Congress got off their asses and forced cable companies to make a la carte cable channels available to their customers?"

Amen! Especially with ESPN. Your cable provider is paying far more to carry ESPN than any other cable channel. And if that isn't enough, they also coerce the provider to also take shit channels like ESPN Classic and ESPN News. If customers could see this info on a menu, and choose what they wanted, these lesser channels would die off, and ESPN would either have to cut their cost, or lose a lot of subscribers.

239 Gaelic Football - wikip. an Irish team sport.
It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass
pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the
ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar 2.5 metres (8.2ft) above the ground (1 point).
Players advance the football, a spherical leather ball, up the
field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing,
and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into
the hands).

I hate that kind of shit. It says absolutely nothing about softball v. baseball. Softball uses a totally different arm slot, different delivery, different trajectory. and different distance from what baseball guys are accustomed to.

That's why guys who can't throw very hard sometimes make it to MLB as "knucklescrapers," i.e., guys throwing in a submarine-type delivery.

Whenever some clowns go in for grrrrlll power, they always have baseball players batting against a chick softball pitcher. They almost NEVER have the converse.

The prosecutors acknowledged in a court filing and verbally to the judge yesterday that their warrants were defective and the cameras the sherriff placed in the massage parlors were a massive violation of fourth amendment rights. "Obviously, we apologize to those people" said the prosecutor in the middle of criminal prosecutions of those he wanted to to exclude from his apology. No word yet if they apologized for what looks like a blatant attempt to extort a guilty plea from Kraft, "or else we might have to release your videos, and we would hate to do that..." 330 If your experience is with baseball, you look in the wrong spot for the ball, and then you have only 40 feet to pick it up out of the hand of a girl jumping at you on the release. It doesn't matter that it is only going 50 or 60 mph.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at May 21, 2019 02:43 PM (J567a)

It's worse than that, even. Hitting relies on reflexes - not higher cognitive function - and you're accustomed to certain types of trajectories. Notice the girls in the clip linked above talk about throwing rising fast balls. Now NO baseball pitch EVER rises; some just drop, from gravity, less than others, which creates the illusion that they rise, but none of them ever do. It's basic physics; when you throw overhand, the ball necessarily is dropping with time. But a ball thrown underhand CAN rise, because it can be thrown on an upward trajectory.

So hitting a pitch that is moving in the opposite fashion from what you've spent years developing reflexes to hit is tough.

Who gives a shit how these worms are grabbing their skis or boards or whatever. Do the friggin acrobatics like adults.

The only think out of all the X-game shit worth watching is the half pipe and the big air - and even those you have to silence out all the bullshit "grab" crap and just take the silly scoring as part of the fact that it's still not a real athletic event but still just a show, at this point.

It's already started to happen in soccer. In 10 years, we'll be a second rate nation, just like we've become in women's golf and tennis.

365 The other things these "competitions" lack is--what if the professional baseball player actually practiced for a few months? With their reflexes and hand-eye coordination, a lot of these guys would learn to hit fast pitch softball....
Posted by: JoeF. at May 21, 2019 02:55 PM (NFEMn)

Periodically we get NFL players out (usually rehabbing) where we hold our weekly baseball practice. Once they accepted my invitation to take some hacks in BP.

One guy had obviously never played baseball. He held the bat cross-handed (i.e., backwards), and once we corrected him, watched him miss the first half dozen pitches by a foot. Then he got dialed in, and started hitting bomb after bomb (and he wasn't a very big guy; probably 5'10", 190 lbs.).

It was one of the most impressive athletic feats I've ever seen. His reflexes and eye-hand coordination were incredible to pick up the knack that quickly.
