John Wick 3 Opens to $57 Million Domestic/$92 Million World, Dethrones Avengers as Country's Biggest Movie
Also, Open Thread

Sorry for all the entertainment crap today.

The box office has a new king and his name is John Wick. The third installment of the hyper-violent Keanu Reeves franchise has taken the top spot at the North American box office and ended the three-week reign of "Avengers: Endgame."

Studios on Sunday say "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum" has grossed an estimated $57 million in its opening weekend. Not only did it far exceed expectations, it's a franchise-best that nearly doubled the opening of the second film, which itself doubled the opening of the first film from 2014.

Is it any good, though?

Overall audiences gave the film a rare A+ CinemaScore, indicating that word-of-mouth will be strong in subsequent weekends.

Imma see this soon.

Engame is still making money, of course, pulling in $2.62 billion globally. Box office watchers had wondered if it could dethrone any of the top three (not adjusted for inflation) money makers, Titanic, Avatar, and The Force Awakens. It beat Titanic and beat Avatar domestically, but not globally.

It needs $173 million more in global box office take to pass Avatar, which Forbes says it probably won't do (though it may come close).

It probably has no chance at all of beating The Force Awakens. I think I'm surprised by that. Though the Star Wars brand was a lot bigger in 2015 than it is now.

19 Some friends wanted to go out to see the 2nd John Wick movie, and we hadn't seen the first one, so we tried to watch it. I think I made it halfway through.

We still went with our friends, but I thought the second one was really dumb. Five minutes of conversation, ten minutes of walking and killing. Repeat until runtime full. The body counts had to be in the hundreds. I found myself wondering about the labor situation for hitmen in these locales. Murders must have dropped to near zero for years following, due to the sheer numbers of killers taken out of the workforce.

44 Keanu Reeves is becoming an all-time classic movie icon, based on the number of Iconic Action Characters in his personal resume. Very few actors have EVER notched so many as Keanu has, now with John Wick added to the list. The only actors I can think of who rival him in number of Iconic Characters are Humphrey Bogart, Harrison Ford and Arnold S.

People like James Cagney, Jackie Chan or Chuck Norris basically played the same character over and over -- but Keanu's Iconic heroes are all different.

81 Young Keanu Reeves, not unlike Catherine Deneuve, couldn't act his way out of a paper bag early in his career. Whereas Miss Deneuve eventually grew as an actress, Keanu's producers and directors eventually learned to, er, "accomodate" and worked their way around his, er, "limitations".

Having said all that, I still like Keanu Reeves a lot.

Reading a recently published autobiography by Gary Sinise called "Grateful American" -- very enjoyable. He mentions that his inspiration for making a fourth incarnation (previously two cinematic versions, one television) of "Of Mice And Men" was the 1973 film "Scarecrow" with Gene Hackman and Al Pacino.

I'd never heard of it and watched it this past weekend. Not much of a plot, but tremendous acting -- especially from Hackman.

144 I've spent about an hour trying to fix my e-mail problem. Since I installed Linux the other day, I get error messages when I try to set up my existing e-mail accounts. Everything else is working perfectly.

So tonight I called Comcast for help. I got a lady of indeterminate ethnicity who was very friendly and chipper, but was unable to solve my problem. She finally told me to call Apple for help. Yes, I'm using an 8-10 year old Apple computer, but why would Apple be able to help me configure Mozilla Thunderbird on Linux Mint? That makes no sense. I had a sneaking suspicion she was trying to get rid of me.

So I did call them, and after being on hold for 15 minutes I got "your call cannot be completed as dialed".

Then I went to the Linux Mint website and figured I'd have to go to the user forum. I tried to register and after several abortive tries got the message that I had tried too many times for one session and to try again later.

Fine. I've had about enough of this for one night.

160 Young Keanu Reeves, not unlike Catherine Deneuve, couldn't act his way
out of a paper bag early in his career. Whereas Miss Deneuve eventually
grew as an actress, Keanu's producers and directors eventually learned
to, er, "accomodate" and worked their way around his, er, "limitations".

Having said all that, I still like Keanu Reeves a lot.

I've heard the same thing. I didn't really start paying attention to his films until The Matrix, which is one of my favorite movies ever. He's pretty good at playing Keanu Reeves, but he's a lot better now at picking scripts, IMHO. He's done some pretty good movies here lately in the past 15 years.

And he's supposed to be a really nice dude IRL. Lots of stories about him being nice to people. Plus, he's a bass player. I saw a video of him with Dog Star (the band) on some late night talk show a while back and he never made a big deal about him being in the band. He was almost shy and hardly said anything after the song, which I really liked.

Posted by: ace at May 20, 2019 08:27 PM (PbpT7)

That's the one thing that annoyed me. Baba Yaga is a witch, not the boogeyman. If I remember my Russian fairy tales,

She lives in a house in the forest that stands on four huge chicken feet and constantly turns round and round. Her yard fence is made of human bones with skulls set on top of each fencepost... however, a visitor will always see one that one fencepost is empty, just as a friendly reminder to be on his or her best behavior. If you mess with her, she will kill you and eat you.

She travels in a giant magic mortar and pestle that flies along the ground, and she always carries a broom with her to sweep her tracks away behind her. You can go to her and ask a favor, and maybe she'll help, and maybe she'll kill you. But if she helps, you will owe her...

174 I posted this about JW3 this am:

John Wick was a decent watch.

I faulted JW2 for spending too much time on the world building. The original left a lot to mystery, hinting at the size and shape of the world and it's rules, but leaving a lot to the imagination. Then 2 got bogged down in the details of the world and less with the shooting in the face.

JW3 introduces elements of the world in sparse fashion again. And plenty of face shooting.

Mostly a setup for JW4 though. Some callbacks to The Matrix and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Biggest disappointment: if you are putting Halle Berry in a movie, you do it because she is hot. Ehh, not so much. Character was kind of a throwaway and could have been played by anybody. The dog scenes were cool, but not reliant on Berry.

I will add - I rank it better than JW2, not quite as good as JW1

We learn a little more about Wick's history, a little more about this shadowy guild of killers, introduce a new antagonist, and watch a shitload of bad guys get whacked in increasingly brutal ways. There are some call backs (including one to the Matrix), and if you thought John was fucked at the end of Chapter 2, stand by.

The one thing I can see about this franchise is that they are having to try harder and harder to top the last one. I don't know how much room they have left.

Posted by: yankeefifth at May 20, 2019 08:40 PM (MTjB1)

When meeting someone for the first time in a non-business setting and they have their dog with them, I quickly say "hi" to them, and then hold open my hand to the dog, a couple of feet away, until the dog comes up to me and sniffs or licks my hand. I'll bend my knee to a small dog, too.

Never in decades have I been bit by the dog. And the person thinks positive things about me.

And if I return, even a year later, the dog ALWAYS remembers me and usually wags it's tail.

There's a doctor here in Louisiana that does physicals for commercial divers (of which I am one). He's had a reputation for decades for being waaaayyyyyy too into some guys' junk and buttholes than is necessary.

You have to get your prostate checked during a dive physical. For some guys, it's normal. Other guys have told me he reaches around, grabs your dick and pulls on it-- supposedly to check some involuntary reflex or other. Other people in the know all say the same thing: if you put this guy on a witness stand he could give you a 'legitimate' medical reason to do it. But that's not why he does it.

Seems like every era has its revenge pron flicks.

In the 1970s, there was the Death Wish and Dirty Harry flicks.

In the 1980s, Dirty Hary ended, but then there was Rambo and Die Hard.

In the 1990s, the Die Hard flicks continued, and the superhero genre started to gain steam.

In the 2000s, the superhero genre REALLY got up to speed.

And today, there's the John Wick series.

I'm sure I'm leaving a few franchises out...

391 I think I'm getting an idea of what the "exculpatory evidence" that Trey Gowdy spoke of is. When going to a FISA court, the FBI is required to present *all* of the evidence they've gathered to the FISA judge, when asking for surveillance. Looks like the FBI forwarded all the negative claims from people like Halper, and intentionally hid the interview with Papadop where he denied the claims. If so, it's not going to be the "smoking gun" we've been hoping for, but it's still a felony charge against whoever did it. (Comey or McCabe)

When meeting someone for the first time in a non-business setting and they have their dog with them, I quickly say "hi" to them, and then hold open my hand to the dog, a couple of feet away, until the dog comes up to me and sniffs or licks my hand. I'll bend my knee to a small dog, too.

And if I return, even a year later, the dog ALWAYS remembers me and usually wags it's tail.

400 When meeting someone for the first time in a non-business setting and they have their dog with them, I quickly say "hi" to them, and then hold open my hand to the dog, a couple of feet away, until the dog comes up to me and sniffs or licks my hand. I'll bend my knee to a small dog, too.

Never in decades have I been bit by the dog. And the person thinks positive things about me.
