Game of Boners: Over 1 Million Sign Petition Asking HBO to Remake Final Season So That It "Makes Sense"
And Also: Open Thread

Sometimes brevity isn't the soul of wit.

Sometimes brevity is just being lazy and slapdash.

As of Saturday evening, 1.02 million people had signed a Change.org petition saying the hit HBO series "deserves a final season that makes sense."

Dylan D., who started the petition to HBO, criticized series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, accusing them of being "woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on."

Apparently more signatures could be coming too, after Dylan posted an urgent plea saying: "Let's get to 1,500,000!"

I mentioned before that I don't have a problem with most of the actual story beats (except for what people are calling "Deus Ex Arya") except for the fact that they were very, very rushed, to the point where they just had no real impact because they were clearly writers' contrivances for the sake of being done with the series and not character evolutions that felt organic and earned.

If you're going to turn a character who has been a Big Damn Hero for seven years into a straight-up homicidal maniac villain, you need to show that descent into madness over the course of an entire season. Not three minutes here and there over the course of two episodes.

I don't hate that plotline on the merits; a lot of people have long suspected that was where the show was heading.

People suspected it because they know that George R.R. Martin says that he doesn't like conventional hero vs. villain stories. He prefers conflicts between people who are partly hero, partly villain. Or between heroes who just have a disagreement.

But is that what the producers of the show actually gave us? No. They did not give us a conflict between two admirable people who each had some flaws. Instead, they turned one of the two into Westerosi Hitler, and I guess want to defend this choice on grounds that it's "realistic."

But it's not. People don't turn into Hitler overnight.

A "realistic" ending would have involved two people, each with incompatible goals -- one to claim a birthright and establish a better world, one who just wants his own land to be free from rule by foreign despot -- but both essentially good. Just unable to compromise.

Turning one of the two into Dragon Fuhrer goes against whatever "gritty, realistic" point George R.R. Martin thinks he was making. It's just a final conflict between Good and Evil, just with the "evil" side being represented by someone who just executed the world's fastest personality change.

Damn, I've seen pro wrestlers foreshadow their impending heel-turn longer than these jokers did in this supposedly "prestige," "realistic" drama.

Nerdrotic, I think, mentioned that Dany had gone from hero to villain faster than Annikin Skywalker. "I will save people from everything, including death" to "brb, out murderin' all the younglings" in about 40 minutes.

Call her Daennykin.

Also: Jon Snow got jealous of Bran Stark getting all the attention for not doing anything at all and decided he would do even more nothing at all.

I mean, except for wearing the Sad and Confused Jon Stark face. Also known more simply as "the Jon Stark Face."

So you're the Prince Who Was Promised?

Promised what? A wedgie?

The Onion comes in for some snark.

'Game Of Thrones' Showrunners Disappointed With How Quality Of Fans Has Dropped Off Over Past Couple Seasons

LOS ANGELES-- Saying their once-beloved viewers have lost much of their luster in recent years, Game Of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff acknowledged Friday they have been frustrated with the way fans of the HBO series have declined in quality over the past few seasons.

...

"Nothing [the fans] do makes any sense anymore, and it just seems like they want the show to be over with as quickly as possible. It's pretty sad, to be honest."

Well, having split the fan base with a divisive and poorly thought out epic, what Benioff and Weiss need now is a property with a fully united fan base which won't give them any grief for screwing up a different once-beloved intellectual property.

So on to Star Wars, then!

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss moving to 'Star Wars': In an announcement that hopes to bring together fans of the biggest fantasy series of all time with the biggest sci-fi franchise, the showrunners for "Game of Thrones" will transition to a galaxy far, far away once Disney gets back to releasing new "Star Wars" movies. Assuming the world doesn’t end before the first arrives in 2022, Benioff and Weiss have shown gifts for compression and spectacle in adapting George R.R. Martin’s sprawling novels, but the past few seasons have revealed some big holes in their storytelling game. Maybe there’s a "Star Wars" book someone can write first?

I've got a baaad feeling about this...

and/or:

Here we go again!

What did you guys think? Like the show's producers, I'm just glad it's over so I can move on to more interesting material.

Oh, btw: We Are Real News, Mr. President.

42 Season 8 was the best season. The first few seasons were a cheesefest.
A lot of us saw Dragon Girl for what she was since she burned the witch. Just admit you got suckered by a storytelling trick, and that in retrospect it all makes perfect sense. The list of villains ends with the moral of the story, as CS Lewis puts it

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

54 I think Dany going mad was actually handled really well.

She'd shown signs of incredible viciousness and a complete lack of empathy for pretty much the entire show.

Walking away from her lover in Mereen and feeling nothing for it?

Burning the khals alive instead of just escaping with Jorah?

Watching her brother die coldly?

Sentencing the Tarlies to death when she had great room for letting them live?

How she handled the battle in the previous season? With fire and blood?

She's always been a vicious bloodthirsty cunt. Always. Hey embracing it fully because she knows that she'll never be able to rule out of love? Her understanding that Her picture of herself as the loved queen who inspires adoration? It's what she's wanted, but never had. She's only ever ruled through fear, fire, and blood.

It's alwaysbeen there. She didn't need 10 hours to get there, because she's alwaysbeen just at the precipice.

How much say did Fatso get in what the show did after season 4 or 5, when it became apparent he wasn't finishing his books and that the ones he had put out after the show became a hit were complete trash.

149 Here's a question I posed on the Twats this morning:

This is supposedly HBO's most successful original series ever. It is also the most expensive.

Why only the six episodes for this season? Was it money? Is it as simple as that? Did the execs at HBO say you have this much money and that only gives you that many episodes and then the writers said okay we have to get all of these plot points in and so instead of characters, exposition it is!

All of the comments I've seen about it, from those who liked it and those who didn't, focus on how rushed this season was. Why the rush? If anything, you would think HBO would want to drag out the season in order to keep those sweet, sweet HBO Now subscriptions active. Is it just money? Or were the writers just that tired of it all? Or maybe both.

I don't get the rushed comment. I three episodes virtually nothing happened.

I think it's around Dany, people think she was good, especially in the most recent seasons, and get turn to evil was quick.

I, as i wrote above, disagree. I think she was evil from the beginning, and people wanted her to be good, papering over her evil in their minds. Her going bad wasn't a huge jump for me. It felt natural.

186 When it comes to actual use of violence, I've never met a woman who would do anything but avoid it at all cost. In most cases, this is personally sensible. If however they are pushed and pushed and pushed to a point where they can no longer avoid it, in my experience most women will then take that violence to an extreme level. It will be wildly overdone. It's a sort of passive-aggressive attitude given physical form.

In that respect I found 'crazy Dany' completely believable. In fact, had she been more moderate in her use of force, I'd have argued that she's acting too much like a man, and was therefore unrealistic.

Had my ex wife had a dragon, I'd be burnt to a crisp right now. If my sister had one growing up, myself, my 2 brothers, and my father would all be dead, and my mother would be chained in a basement somewhere while my sister screamed 'shame' at her through a doorway.

This is how women deal with 'violence'. There is an off switch (the default) and then there is the 'on' switch. There is no 'lightly toasted'.

About that budget thingy, WikiP says that back in '016, HBO made $1.93Billion with a capital B. I don't think they had to worry about a budget very much. I'd also think there's be a fresh team of show runners and writers who'd be jumping at the chance to strut their stuff for one of the most popular TV shows in a while, especially if the book series' storyline had been played out.

243 It was like the team that made it just turned in their two weeks and had to finish it before they cleaned out their desks.

I guess the producers are doing Star Wars now and just decided they had enough of GoT?

It's just funny all the meandering plots and characters over 8 seasons and they just decided to do an Exit Plan in the last few episodes.

HBO should have found some work around to give it a better send off.

I honestly though am not that upset by it as the "internet" is right now. Felt rushed, but the series also just dragged on too long.

269 One good thing about GoT: I learned a heck of a lot about writing from it, and plan to use that knowledge to write stories hopefully far superior. Fingers crossed.

Previous thoughts from earlier today:

It was Hunger Game of Thrones. Ended just like Mockingjay, except Katniss was not punished for killing her mad queen. (Though Jon is not rally punished, gets to go back up north with free folk and a pup that love him.)

The fans that thought they would get a Disney ending for Dany and are petitioning a rewritten season are temper tantrum-ing in vain. GRRM was never gonna write that for you, sweeties. It is known. And I think he will still die before it is finished.

The ending has some lame parts, but it fits with what we saw all the way back in season 1. Terribly rushed writing, but the character arcs do make sense.

Jon continues to refuse the crown, the 7 kingdoms form a council of 7 to rule. The dragon melts down the throne (hey it was a good idea).
Danny is exiled and ends up dead at the hand of a child (Aria?) and we see that Bran has actually taken possession of the dragon (for the initiated, he has the ability to do that for animals and people) leaving the question, did the Dragon refuse to kill Tyrion and Jon, or did Bran prevent it...

did not find someone to do the next sopranos so decided to find some loser to do the low rent version of the whole hobbit thing, but with lots of sex with incest as the kicker.

323 A key oversight, IMO, is the death of Barristan Selmy in the tv show. He has not died in the books. And, there is a reason for that. He is/was a source on the decent of the Mad King. He saw it first hand. It was important to him, when he approached Daenerys, that he evaluate whether she possessed the "taint" that the Mad King and Viserys possessed. He decided that she did not.

Since the very fundamental plot line in the finale was mindset of Daenerys, the fact that the writers had dispatched the most important character relative to that plotline (Selmy). I'm not surprised that the story seemed rushed this season.

Also, fan service sucks when you're telling a story. Making a whoring, adulterous, cut throat sell sword the holder of the realm's coin (Bronn of the Blackwater) is just plain over the top. Especially since he chose sides and supported the Lannisters. But, viewers liked the character, so they threw him in there.

345 292 a lot of the 8 season arc of GoT was boring shit that didn't matter. Like it the Silmarillion got made into a 100 hours of TV, without the singing, and focused on one minor civil war.

Arya's training was a waste of time. Dorn didn't matter. Mereen and the rise of Dany was shit no one fucking cared about. The final battle with the white walkers was good TV.

But we watched it. We watched it because we were rooting for the starks. who mostly got mulched. but a few lived and it was good.

351 I like the ending. I thought the series was very good but not spectacular. The battles scenes, however, were spectacular, like nothing I have seen at the theater or in film school.

The main reason I liked the finale, even more the second time, is because it flies in the face of current PC, that girls=good and boys=bad. Dany was pretty and sexy and loved her dragons, so if she burns to death or crucifies hundreds of people she must still be good, right? No. She was bad from the get-go, like when she killed her husband. Why was anyone surprised she smoked Kings Landing?

I thought Bran was a nice compromise, and he was the first character to have POV in the books, so it kind of makes sense. Thank the Lord it was a male. The refusal to surrender to the idiot intersectionality crowd warms my heart and makes me support the show even more.

484 Weiners chorus is composed of Republicans of the United States Senate. They have been rehearsing all their lives for this, and the fortuitous arrival of Mitt Romney was just in time to preserve the chorus, after they lost Jeff Flake. No one else could sing the soprano parts.

486 If they had actually read the books they would have known that the author has no idea how to finish a story.
I mean, they would have seen this coming a long time ago. Those books lacked a clear story as bad as that (was it?) Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
Both had a beginning, a vague middle but no end in sight. This was clear to me before I finished the third book in either series.

487 I didn't find it out of character for Danny. Just a last step.
They had shown her power hungry nature and ability to kill horrifically for at least two seasons. Any time she talked about "her birthright" she sounded like a crazy person.
-Rounding up and killing some of the masters as punishment because she knew some of them were the golden mask dudes. She might have been talked out of this (can't remember) but this was her plan.
-Frying the Tarley father and son rather than taking them prisoner.-Going mental when she found out that Jon actually had the better claim. So not at all about the rightfulness of a Targaryen to the throne.
-Numerous threats against Sansa/Winterfell-Crucifying her enemies (ok they had done the same, but still)-locking the merchant and her handmaiden that betrayed her alive in a safe to suffocate or starve to death.-Burning Varys alive.

I thought her desire for the Iron Throne at any cost was made pretty clear, including the killing of a 1/2 million or so to make sure her enemies were dead and a message sent to others.

488 Maybe I'm crazy, but I've followed GoT from start to finish, and I found the ending to be satisfying, even moving.
The evolution of Dany to homicidal maniac was foreshadowed from the first season. Remember how she watched impassively while her brother had his brains boiled with molten gold? Granted, he was a shit, but still ... her brother. From day 1, her dream was the Iron Throne and power, and death to anyone who stood in her way.

In the final episode, the long conversation between Jon and Tyrian spelled out the issue starkly. And remember what Dany said just before Jon knifed her: "I know what's good." "And What of all the others?" "They don't get to choose." There's the voice the Left, as stark as can be: lusting for power to imminatize the eschaton because they are The Good People.
As for picking Bran as king, it made sense: He can't father a child, so the dynastic issues won't arise, and he's a compromise candidate - a Stark, but the Starks have detached the North from the kingdom, so there's no question of centralizing power. And the fates fashioned for the characters were, I thought, apt, even poetic.

Rather than lazy, I found the writing to be skillful. Yes, the ending was abrupt; but conflicts, even convoluted ones, often ended suddenly - with a Hastings or a Bosworth.

As for Star Wars, I'm sure the franchise will make the writers rich beyond the dreams of avarice, and I wish them well; but Tolkien himself couldn't save that train wreck.

489 54 I think Dany going mad was actually handled really well.

She'd shown signs of incredible viciousness and a complete lack of empathy for pretty much the entire show.

She's always been a vicious bloodthirsty cunt. Always.

It's always been there. She didn't need 10 hours to get there, because she's always been just at the precipice.

Thank you. I don't understand how anyone thought Dany (1) was some sort of heroine and (2) just "all of a sudden" turned mad.

Were these people even watching the show the past 8 years?

In addition to all the things you mention about her, she literally stood in front of the city of Qarth and, after not getting her way, threw a temper tantrum and stated:

"Thirteen! When my dragons are grown, we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who have wronged me.

We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground.

Turn us away and we will burn you first."

The only reason she was not traveling around burning cities to the ground the entire 8 seasons is because (1) she had to wait for her dragons to be completely grown and (2) she had Jorah, Messandei and later Tyrion to keep her in check.

After Jorah died, she lost faith in Tyrion's advice and Messandei was murdered before her eyes, she had no one to keep her in check. Her true Targaryean nature was let loose.

490 "A "realistic" ending would have involved"

I'm guessing you haven't read the books. A lot of stupid plot twists just to enable another book. And another book. And another book. And.......

491 I didn't watch one minute of it.

Instead, I lived my life with real people and enjoyed the few hours I will spend on this earth.

495 I never got into GoT. But, I think it was lots of naked chicks, lots of sadism, and pretty much everyone dies. Did I miss anything?

496 I actually think Daeny's decent has happened over a few seasons and they doubled down when she told Jon that she was going to continue. She didn't just go mad, she always acted this way everytime she thought she was doing the right thing, such as crucifying the slaves, teaming up with the murderous raping Dothraki or killing anyone who questioned her, and from the start of this season she thought the people of Westeros were against her, this had to die.

I also think a point that i haven't read about, but was a good story, is how Sansa basically stabbed Jon in the back to make sure she became Queen, that she said he should be sent to the wall not to save him, but because if he was free he'd be King, but if he was killed than the North may turn on her.
