The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

America is not an anti-Semitic country. Oh, there have been times and places in which it was common, but much of it was driven by social mores rather than the structural anti-Semitism of many European countries. But if there is an institution in which one can count on to find anti-Semitism, it is Academia. From the Jewish quotas at Harvard to the current vicious Jew-hate on many college campuses, It has been a fixture for a century, and is getting worse and worse.

Is it a harbinger of things to come in America? No, I don't think so, but as J.J. Sefton has ably pointed out, the Left has taken over the academy, and is filling our children's heads with mush in their formative years, and filling them with hate as they reach adulthood.

Part of that mush is a careful, well orchestrated decoupling of Zionism from anti-Semitism, as if the hopes and aspirations of Jews across the world, and across history for the reestablishment of the Jewish state in its historic location can be separated from Jews and Judaism. It has been part of the bedrock of Judaism since the Romans drove the Jews from Israel in the first century. In fact, there were other exiles mentioned in the bible, including the Babylonian Captivity, and they played a pivotal role in Judaism and its historical drive to return to the land of Israel.

So anybody who tells me that they are anti-Zionist but not anti-Semitic is going to hear about how I have upped my ammunition purchases, and that the people on my side of the barricades are much better shots.

My only question for Ellen Schanzer (the young lady who withdrew from NYU) is; "How has your family voted and donated since the Democrat party joined hands with the Jew-Hating Left?"

Because until the assimilated Jews of America decide that Jew-hate is not acceptable, they will continue to donate to leftist causes and vote for every Democrat on the ballot, and nothing will change in Academia.

I do not believe that it is in America's DNA to embrace the Left's hatred of Jews and Judaism, but they can create havoc, even with their small numbers. So, while I am optimistic, I'm also rational. And I am going to need more storage space very soon.

Picture your ending first. If you know your ending, and know how you want your reader to feel at the end, that gives you a goal to work towards. Even if you aren't an outliner, especially if you aren't an outliner...know your ending first.

After that, I make the characters as real as possible and then just plop them down into situations and let them act realistically. Sometimes I have to perform plot interventions to get the story moving towards goalposts.

When it works, its magical. When it doesn't work, it's drudgery. But at the end, you can't tell when reading it which parts were magic and which parts were work.

I often work from endings first, before I even start pre-writing.

I'll know exactly where I want the story to conclude. I had the final image of The Sharp Kid in my head when the book was a meandering mess I tried to write without an outline two years before I actually wrote it.

The Battle of Lake Erie's ending was a bit different. Because it was based on real events, I was somewhat limited in what I could do, but I still settled on the exact moment pretty early. And because I knew the moment, I was able to understand how to work the thematic focus into it.

in the first case, it isn't true, and in the second case, from a purely strategic point of view even the dimmest bulb should recognize that an Ally is an Ally. Motivations don't matter when you're in a war for survival.

It simply will not work. So when taking a photo and trying to text or email that to another, I would have to open a third party app - also having dubious/unknown privacy protection policies - searching for the pic, then attaching it via that third party app, of course, after granting that app access to my text or email as appropriate.

I ultimately relented.

The modern attitude of eternal alliances I think is pretty daft. Yes it's all very romantic sounding but it's not reasonable. Countries sometimes share interests, sometimes have opposing interests. No permanent friends or enemies is i think the best policy. Not that I don't like our allies but I think we're involved in more than we should be. If Iran became no longer a nuke threat, I'd support a full exit from our various Middle Eastern alliances.

170 My grandfather graduated NYU in 1906. I have his Phi Beta Kappa key, one of the requirements being second-level language, and his was German.

He went to Europe immediately upon graduation, found himself in love with the rural parts of Hungary, where he lived for a couple years, and taught English to students to earn money.

He subscribed to two newspapers all his life, one in German, the other in Hungarian. WWII upset the mail chain somewhat, but he made sure after the war, to get his papers.

Gramps was probably mildly jingoistic and antisemitic as a college student, a product of his upbringing and the culture of day for Yankee gentiles. He took a lot of chemistry courses and probably had interactions with jews at NYU, more than when growing up in Jersey City.

His few years in small-town pre-WWI Hungary apparently washed him clean of that, because I never heard him speak in a way that might have hinted antisemitism.

Iran is the last true Military threat in the middle east - every other power is either neutralized (Syria, Iraq) or dependent on our protection (Saudis and the Gulf States). Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas are now simply Iranian proxy forces - if Iran falls apart, so do they.

This is actually a huge improvement in the region compared to 30 years ago. It looks cruel to say that the Syrian Civil War was actually good for us, but it permanently removed a huge number of enemies of ours, on all sides, and wiped out the remaining military power of even the "victors". The Syrian Govm't can even now barely control it's own territory, much less cause trouble anywhere else.

I am kind of at that point, although it is hard to resist that feeling that you could always use more for main rifle. Perhaps it can be justified as making your position more defensible with numbers of defenders in your sphere of influence. My main problem is getting the time to load what I have in terms of components, and then storage requirements. Ammo cans seem to be going up in price.

In my longest novel to date, a fantasy, all I knew for a long time was that I wanted some kind of deadly showdown between the villain and his former teacher, like Alexander and Aristotle with Alexander. The real shining ending came to me when I was about halfway through the story, and wonder upon wonders, it matched with what I'd been writing all along. Christianity had a super PR team in the fourth century, including the Emperor of Rome. So I'm not sure how much they had to do with distancing the Christian Church from Judaism, but I suspect it was at least partially due to them.

279 I have had friends as well as people on this very blog explain it but I will never comprehend why American Jew vote predominately democrat.

I was not raised that way and in fact my father had numerous friends and acquaintances who were Jewish. At the risk of sounding stereotypical, my dad did a side business as a watch, clock and jewelry repairman and many of his suppliers were Jewish so it was always a part of my life. As a kid I remember being wished a Merry Christmas and replying Happy Hanukkah.

284 A lot of post regarding buy more ammo. How much is enough? Until the Obama election, all I had was a couple of 22's and a few hundred rounds of ammo. Now, have multiple 9mm and 45ACP sidearms as well as AR's, AK equivalents, 308's, etc. I try to keep what I think is a significant amount on hand but range time eats it up quickly. I fervently hope I never need any of it but fear that my clueless kids will and it will be too late for them to acquire anything.As far as ammo cans go if you are ever tempted, skip the 20mm cans, way to heavy when they are even half full.
