39 The colors are exquisite. That electric blue in her apron really pops. Her whole outfit is just primary colors, but the red and yellow are faded and warn allowing the blue to dominate. The rest of the painting is variations of the warm colors--yellows, tans, golds, red/oranges. The only cool color to counter this is the blue. This is such a nice use of color. It is both warm and cool at the same time.

89 The scene is nothing dramatic. But Vermeer's use of color and detail brings it alive. The soft, almost bland, colors for the walls, floor, and window frame serve to frame the brighter hues of her dress and bring out details of the tableware. It's effective.

Vermeer always has the extra little details that complete a scene. The weave of the basket and sheen of the wall hangings and the slight Delft look of the bottom wall tiles are good examples. I'm not sure what the wooden thing is on the floor behind the woman. Maybe a mouse trap? Clearly it's supposed to lend realism or accuracy to the setting.

Thanks, CBD. Vermeer is always a pleasure to look at.

100 My MIL milked cows the morning she got married.
She's 87 and loves to tell you that. If you wanted to give her some shit, I guess you could just ask what she did the morning before and the morning after. I never do though, because she's never all "get off my haystack" about it. She has lost most of her tractor-driving skills, damn it.

Whenever she's coming over for a few days, weeks, what have you, we make up some little gag about putting her to hell to work. Her church friends out home, a pretty straight lot, all just chuckle and titter, but wife's FB brigade drops a brick in their apron. "Really?" "You wouldn't do that would you?" I'll generally pose her with a piece of power eqpt just to mess with 'em.

I do like those pipe drills. They sure have smoothed out the streets in these parts. Don't really care for their huge "Danish" bales though. Seeing a mountain of them, under tarps instead of in the barn? Makes me think of new and different breeds of mold and vermin. And then that damn spike you run through them -- sooner or later, somebody's going to get one of those and an attitude on the same day. Could make the papers.

121 Another nice part of this painting is the balance of space. A whole lot of nothing on the right with a bunch of something on the left. The left is just packed with stuff, so why is it balanced and not left-heavy? Because the lady is positioned just right of center. A human figure will almost certainly dominate the scene (unless they are really tiny in the composition), so put it on the empty side. But yet Vermeer places her just right of center and slightly overlapping onto the left to keep the two halves unified. And because that same figure is wearing the primary colors also adds weight to the area. This work is a masterclass in element manipulation. It's too bad that there are so few Vermeers.

123 alert * alert * alert

there's a newly discovered vermeer!

well, actually, there's a newly restored vermeer:

"woman reading a letter" is a vermeer in the collection of the gemaldegalerie, dresden. there was a blank wall behind the woman, much as in this picture, but x-ray photography has revealed that there was originally a painting of a cupid (or eros) hanging on that blank wall. it was long thought that vermeer painted it out, but now the conservators have established that the image was painted over some 30 years after vermeer's death. so they have decided to remove the over-painting and reveal the work as originally intended. it changes the subject (it's a love letter) a nd the atmosphere of the work. that same cupid appears on a wall in another vermeer, i think, a woman at a spinet (or harpsichord).

go to "vermeer dresden" for images of the "new" painting.

Switzerland adopted via referendum last week, the EU gun regulations. The Swiss had fairly liberal gun laws for an EU country , in that they mandated veterans to keep their army issued arms , etc. There was a small carve out for that to continue, however, obtaining weapons now as a citizen will be strictly regulated according to what Brussels demands.

The same idiotic gun ban and regulation that Obama signed up with via the UN, and Trump repealed our participation in at the NRA convention early this month.

169 Willowed from the last thread but bears repeating:

So I see that there was a House Special election yesterday. What? You didn't hear anything about it? CNN did not feature it as a clear indication of the voterapalooza which portends the national trend for the next Presidential election? I will give you only ONE guess as to why:

a) Hillary is POTUS

b) it's only a local crime story

c) The republican won with close to 70% of the vote

If you answered c) you get . . . well you get an honorary Ewok award.

Now, I note that this HD is clearly a Republican stronghold and it was a very low turnout election. in the last actual election the Repub hit 66% and the Dem in the last election hit 34%. But the trend is verry interesting - as follows in % (rounded to nearest percentage):

2019 Special: R68 D32

2018 Regular: R66 D34

2016 Regular: R62 D38

2014 Regular: R59 D41

I mean - I'm no Karl Rove (heh) but I am definitely seeing a trend here and really across a whole lot of PA (I gave it a good look on balletopedia). As we all know Trump flipped a number of counties in PA from Obama to Repub/Trump and, if this is any indication, the trend continues and solidifies. Nothing I see from the Dem side is going to reverse this . . . not even "old white guy" Biden. And if they nominate Socialist Bernie or someone like Kamaltoe Harris I see these percentages as getting worse and, even with fraud in Philly, it will be a blood bath. Now there is a LOT of time between now and the Presidential election - and all Winston Wolf rules apply - but I like this trend right now.

188 Hell in GA our local sheriff was the bootlegger.

Hence the suspension of disbelief when watching "The Dukes of Hazzard." Any realistic portrayal of small-town constabulary would've had Boss Hogg monetizing theme Duke boys, not caterwauling about them.

Oh, and Daisy Duke would've had 4-5 kids at that age.

Looked into this. It seems like this is the Swedish version of the "OK" finger sign being suddenly declared racist. Scandi-Supremacists were allegedly using certain runic symbols as cultural identifiers.

So, by banning them, the smart Swedish elites have figured out how to simultaneously surrender their cultural heritage to both Mohammedan immigrants and racists.

During the Satanic scare during the 80s/90s, a lot of Christian groups were pushing the idea that the peace symbol (chicken foot) was actually a Satanic symbol. Part of the initiation, so I heard when I was a kid, was you stole a Cross, turned it upside-down and broke the arms. And then the hippies adopted it as part of an anti-God movement.

When I did photography, one of my favorite aspects was setting up the scene of a still life. (I consider this scene to be sort of a still life.) Establishing the place of each figure and object for balance, color, and depth was fun. Then add to that making sure to include the appropriate items but not too much. It was like doing a first draft of creative writing then the rewrites. I can't draw or paint like Vermeer but I can enjoy the process that makes him so effective.

268 Wikipedia: "A foot warmer is on the floor behind her"

Also:

According to art historian Harry Rand, the painting suggests the woman is making bread pudding, which would account for the milk and the broken pieces of bread on the table. Rand assumed she would have already made custard in which the bread mixed with egg would be soaking at the moment depicted in the painting. She pours milk into the Dutch oven to cover the mixture because otherwise the bread, if not simmering in liquid while it is baking, will become an unappetizing, dry crust instead of forming the typical upper surface of the pudding. She is careful in pouring the trickle of milk because bread pudding can be ruined when the ingredients are not accurately measured or properly combined.

By depicting the working maid in the act of careful cooking, the artist presents not just a picture of an everyday scene, but one with ethical and social value. The humble woman is using common ingredients and otherwise useless stale bread to create a pleasurable product for the household. "Her measured demeanor, modest dress and judiciousness in preparing her food conveys eloquently yet unobtrusively one of the strongest values of 17th-century Netherlands, domestic virtue", according to the Essential Vermeer website.

"In the end, it is not the allusions to female sexuality that give this painting its romance or emotional resonance — it is the depiction of honest, hard work as something romantic in and of itself," Raquel Laneri wrote in Forbes magazine. "The Milkmaid elevates the drudgery of housework and servitude to virtuous, even heroic, levels."[11]

Yeah, yeah, whatever, you overinflated critiquebag.

Agreed - to a very high extent that is true - but that's why I looked back through the trends in regular elections and provided them (and I note lots of PA counties look like this in the regular election stats of the past ten years). What I would posit is that the trend continues (albeit in a special election) that PA seems to be moving in a Redstate direction and that trend was not affected by the constant "Orangeman bad" drumbeat of the past two years. But - yes - as I said - all Winston Wolf rules apply and yes - it is only a special election . . . still . . . it's better than losing the special election!

274 Vermeer was a meticulous painter. He did exhaustive color and compositional studies before he ever touched brush to canvas. That kind of painstaking approach doesn't lend itself to high volume production.

Thanks. Unfortunately, Vermeer was not one of the Western artists I studied in real depth. Jacques-Louis David, yes. Caspar David Friedrich, sure. Michelangelo and Manet, OK. But not Vermeer. Oh well. Never too late tho. In that regard, he sounds a little like Leonardo. Lots of sketches and experimentation, not a lot of finished works.

Oh, you're such a Romanschisch.

The other thing about the Swiss was, they came up with all that tolerance crap because they had flat run out of stakes at which to burn each other. Most violent culture in Europe, at the peak of the Christian religious Troubles. Different strains of Protestants would burn each other, leaving the Catholics right out of it. And the Catholics, well, O Jesus.

I posted this last night but since we're talking about movies and shit . . .

Catch 22: I've watch the first three of six episodes.

First, the good news. It has a good, authentic look, including the combat scenes (although they often seem to fly awfully low). And, I think, the soundtrack is great, mostly the big band swing that those guys actually listen to.

The not so good news, it just doesn't capture the madcap chaos of the book and, largely, of the Alan Arkin film. One problem, is the structure. Part of the appeal of the novel, and it's one of my all time favorite novels, is the barely controlled chaos. Not only does the novel start in the middle and veer wildly forward and backward in time, often a paragraph would start talking about one thing and end up talking about another. (The Arkin movie started at the end then jumped around throughout Yossarian's tour.) This series starts at the beginning (stateside training) and, so far anyway, proceeds chronologically. That increases comprehension of the story arc but lacks the chaotic frenzy of the original. Similarly, Arkin played Yossarian as a rather hangdog, increasingly desperate guy. This Yossarian is a pretty boy, frat boy type known as "Yo-Yo". Again the frantic desperation is missing. I should also mention this Major Major Major Major can't hold a candle to Bob Newhart. Finally, this series is three times the length of the Arkin movie and yet doesn't seem to add much.

In short, this series turns the madcap, slapstick, dark terror comedy of the original into a much more conventional, often maudlin and sentimental, dramedy.

Incidentally, the book The Bridgebusters by Thomas McKelvie Cleaver tells the true story of author Joseph Heller's service. I was very surprised to learn that much of the most unbelievable parts of Catch 22 were true.

Some NPR type was interviewing Heller, and asked a foolish question (!), something about the finest people he'd ever worked with, obviously fishing for some kind of academic endorsement of screen writers. Heller said that would be the officers of the Army Air Corps.

Interviewer was stunned. Didn't you write an absurdist comedy about how crazy the AAF was? Heller asked, balefully, "Are you familiar with the term, 'fiction'?"

388 on guests who stay too long:

Amusing backstory to the slimy character of Uriah Heep, in Dicken's novel David Copperfield. (no not the band) The story is that Hans Christian Anderson visited London from his native Denmark and being a fellow writer, Dickens offered to put him up in his home. Well, Anderson was supposed to stay for a few days, days turned into weeks and weeks and weeks, all with Anderson making very humble sounding excuses but never leaving and driving Dickens out of his mind.

SO, when David Copperfield came out, everyone at the time who knew them recognized that by physical description and manner, Uriah Heep WAS Hans Christian Anderson, and was portrayed as one of the slimiest, most conniving, and most deceitful of any of Dickens' characters. (at one point David Copperfield looks at his hand in disgust after he's shaken Uriah Heep's hand)

Moral: Don't piss off a writer. You'll end up in his books.

It's now a race.

Once the Dem's rolled snake eye's on the Mueller report and Barr indicated he's going after the investigators, the Dem's determined their best course of action was to get impeachment going before the DOJ investigations come out in the hope of shaping the narrative that Trump/Barr are "retaliating" against the Dem's for their impeachment which, of course, would further justify impeachment proceedings.

478 Duke,

I had been going through the same thing with my 13 year old who is my stepson (basically raised him from 3 on) and we were really having a tough go since his Mom and I got a divorce. Through one ear and out the other, disrespect, etc.

I tried remembering that I didn't listen to a damn thing my father or mother said.

Just a thought. I started putting post it notes around his room ever few days with small notes of encouragement, values to live by, moral and ethical codes to live by, etc...

Pretty damn quick and simple to do without the drama or tension associated to communicating with a parent, but a gesture that seems like extra work but isn't.

Since then we still have some issues (Hell he's a teenager!) but even he's softened and the amazing thing it he's saved every single one of them on a wall in his room.Maybe try this direction?

495 Gaah, my boss is being a putz lately. He is stretched too thin and can't focus on things long enough to get up to speed. But I have limited sympathy for that situation because he wants to micro-manage, keep his hand in coding projects and things instead of trusting the team and stepping back. I understand fully wanting to continue doing a bit of coding as a break from talking to the agencies all the time and all that, but he doesn't have enough hours in the day to insist on being involved in the web programing, and the POD programming, and being the only one who travels out to install the special Rxs for the program. Then he feels insecure when a team member is doing a great job and starts undercutting them (not me, but I see him doing it to the person who should be made his #2 and given room to take care of things that he does not have time for.

I do not have skills in that kind of communication but will have to try to butter him up about all he is doing and then suggest he needs to delegate some things because we cannot afford for him to burn out - that is true, we'd be in a very hard spot if he had a heart attack or sumptin and the team had take over all he is doing until a replacement could be hired and brought up to speed. But we are in a bit of a hard spot now because he won't hand things off that are getting half assed because he doesn't have time for them that one or the other of the team could do if they would hire someone to handle low level repetitive tasks that sap our time needlessly.

Another thing Gavin Newsom just did was to launch a lawsuit against the Trump Administration for canceling the $1 billion train to nowhere grant, which had been signed by the Obama administration. California says that it is clearly illegal for the rest of us to refuse to give them $1 Billion in extra money to blow - we obviously have no right to keep it.

Abortion is issue #1 because of the massive funding the PP can give them. If they don't have the ability to funnel government money back into campaigns, their ability to force their own livelihood as an important issue across the whole of the Democratic Party diminishes.

It's already happening with the unions, and it's going to accelerate in the face of Janus. As Unions have become less profitable, the Democratic Party has been less inclined to push for their priorities. When was the last time anyone talked about card check?

551 Bander, to be precise, it's actually Rhaeto-Romansch.

Interesting. And the more fun is that in a country with four languages Romansch is called many things.

"Das im Schweizer Kanton Graubünden gesprochene Bündnerromanisch -- gewöhnlicher Rätoromanisch oder einfach Romanisch (Eigenbezeichnung: Rumantsch (Sutselvisch, Surmiran, Unterengadin), Romontsch (Surselva), Rumauntsch (Oberengadin)) genannt -- gehört zusammen mit dem Dolomitenladinischen und mit dem Friaulischen zu den rätoromanischen Sprachen, einer Untergruppe der romanischen Sprachen."

554 545 So the "rumor" is SanFranNan is gonna start impeachment while the President is over seas... To humiliate him I guess.... Sure won't help with his attempts at better trade. deals

As incompetent as Nanzi is, she is aware the impeachment thingy will unleash the dogs of war and most of those dogs will have indictments for Nanzi's friends. Never pull Trumps finger.

That's the way we sang it at Koot's in Anchorage in the late-80s.

It's genuinely touching that people here are concerned about other people that, for the most part, they only know through snippets of text in little boxes and (usually silly) pseudonyms. Y'all are good folk.

559 I know that there are a certain amount of folks here that need, at the very least, prayers, and possibly more than that.
I am not one of those yet, but I can probably see it from here, since I myself am well past my "use by" date.

Poutine is yummy, artery-clogging goodness.

And it never showed up in Western Canada until a decade or two ago.

564 I saw this painting in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam back in 1976. Some things you never forget.
The rivulet of milk is a miracle of observation and rendering. It seems to twist and flow even as you look at it.
The whitewashed wall behind the woman is white at first glance; but if you look at it for a while, you'll see subtle shades of yellow, blue, pink, green. Another miracle of observation and rendering: to show the deep beauty of a simple whitewashed wall!

The details are amazing - the cracked window, the stained table, the footwarmer on the floor; the basket hung in the corner.

One could literally spend hours staring at this little painting - it's about 18" high by 16" wide - and not exhaust its beauty.

566 "Admiral" (Michiel de Ruyter) movie, starring Frank Lammers and Rutger Hauer has about a dozen "easter egg" references to classic Dutch paintings. They don't dwell on them, the characters are just passing through in the background or the side margins of the story.

Here's "the milkmaid"
