The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Whenever I think about this and what he really deserves, I think, ‘We should turn him over to the Saudis, you know, his buddies. The same Saudis who got rid of that reporter, you know. Maybe they can do the same for him.’” Fran Liebowitz

Quote II

“Over time, you develop and evolve on the things you choose to honor … Jefferson is more problematic,”

“There's a lot, of course, to admire in his thinking and his philosophy, but then again if you plunge into his writings, especially the notes on the state of Virginia, you know that he knew slavery was wrong. We are all morally conflicted human beings.” Mayor Pete Buttigieg

Quote III

“We don’t want anything to do with Merkel and Macron, who have destroyed this European Union. We want to save Europe from the bureaucrats, the bankers and the financiers that have ruined it all these years,”Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini

And this is a reason why we can't have anything nice.

A GP has revealed he is planning to quit medicine over an investigation by the doctors watchdog into claims he ‘discriminated’ against a Muslim woman for asking her to remove her veil.

Dr Keith Wolverson said he ‘politely’ asked the woman to take off the garment for patient safety reasons during a consultation last year because he was unable to hear her explain her sick daughter’s symptoms.

He was then ‘deeply upset’ when last week he received a letter from the General Medical Council, the professional regulator, informing him that he was subject to an inquiry over allegations of racial discrimination which could result in him being struck off.

More facts revealed which continue to make us look like just another Banana Republic.

Former FBI general counsel James Baker said Friday he viewed the Steele dossier “skeptically” and was “concerned” about the veracity of the document when the bureau received it before the 2016 election.

But despite those concerns, Baker was one of the FBI officials who reviewed the Carter Page surveillance warrant application, which relied heavily on information from the dossier.

Somewhere along the line, the value of human life was thrown out.

What began as a late-night vape sale in a quiet Centennial neighborhood ended in a star high school rugby player being shot and killed outside his house.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has charged four teens with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery in connection with, what Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies say, was a botched robbery attempt that left 18-year-old Lloyd Chavez IV dead. All four have been charged as adults.

Juliana Serrano, one of the teens charged in connection with the shooting death, told police that she and three others — Kenneth Gallegos, Dominic Stager and Demarea Mitchell — went to Chavez’s house with the intention to rob him of vape juice, according to Gallegos’ arrest affidavit. There was an exchange of money before Chavez and Mitchell got into an altercation on the lawn, according to Serrano’s account in the affidavit. At some point during the fight, Chavez was shot in the chest.

The fish jokes continue to write themselves.

During a three-hour operation in Brazil on April 23, doctors used an acrylic mold wrapped with the skin of a tilapia fish to rebuild and extend Maju’s fake vaginal canal.

Called neovaginoplasty, the procedure involved two molds. The first mold was the aforementioned one with the tilapia skin. This one will remain permanently in his body.

“In contact with the patient’s body, the sterilized and odor-free fish skin displays stimulatory cell growth properties. It is rich in type 1 collagen a substance that promotes healing and has a firmness and elasticity which is as strong and resilient as human skin,” the Post notes.

Women are catching up with men in the drinking department. And it's not a good thing health-wise.

Women are drinking more today than ever before — a statistic that closes the “drinking gender gap” while opening them up to a rash of long-term health problems.

The bodies of women and men do not break down and respond to alcohol identically, and it’s not just a matter of size, as Liquor.com notes. And no, this is not an opinion-based statement nor is it a shaming of females who like to imbibe.

Now that that’s out of the way: women’s bodies (evidently) contain less water, a key component in dissolving alcohol, which means they end up with higher concentrations of alcohol in their bloodstreams than men. Women also tend to carry more body fat than men do, which holds on to alcohol. The female body also produces less of the enzyme dehydrogenase (or ADH), which breaks down alcohol.

Toxic masculinity, man 'splaining about science that is settled.

No hate. No call to violence. Just stating an opinion, gets another Conservative booted from Face Book.

It's about time the feckless GOP realized they are next on the list of the intolerant left.

"Men are scared of women now."

Men are scared of women now.

LeanIn.org and SurveyMonkey’s new #MentorHer poll reveals Friday that 60% of male managers report feeling “too nervous” about being accused of harassment to interact with women in “common workplace” activities such as mentoring, socializing and one-on-one meetings.

That’s a 32% spike from 2018, with an additional 36% of men saying they now actively avoid women in junior-level positions — effectively chopping down their shot at climbing the corporate ladder.

“The vast majority of managers and senior leaders are men,” says Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and founder of LeanIn.org, in a statement. “If they are reluctant even to meet one-on-one with women, there’s no way women can get an equal shot at proving themselves.”

The European Union has some plans up its sleeve for Face Book.

Should Facebook be broken up? Despite her reservations about the massive social network, the EU’s competition commissioner, one of the few people with the authority to pursue such an aggressive action, doesn’t think it’s the best way forward.

“For us, it would be a remedy of the very last resort,” Margrethe Vestager said today in Paris at Viva Technology, a flagship European tech conference. “It would keep us busy in court for maybe a decade.”

Vestager, whose directorate recently slapped Google with a $1.7 billion fine for alleged unfair practices in the online advertising market, thinks there’s a better way: She says it could be much more powerful and direct if tech titans like Facebook were required to give other companies access to important data.

“We think much more about access to data when it comes to, for instance, misuse of position of a monopoly,” she said. ”If you have no access to data, you won’t be able to make it in the market because you cannot access potential customers.”

And this won't be wrapped up in the courts?

The ONT Musical Interlude

Born on This Day: 19 May 1945
English musician, singer, songwriter Pete Townshend, The Who. On This Day: 19 May 1979
Eric Clapton held a party at his Surrey house celebrating his recent marriage to Patti Boyd. Love is a many splendored thing especially for tonight's Genius Award Winner.

They say that love conquers all, if you are meant to be then it’ll be. Well, a woman was more than determined to make it work with her boyfriend, so much so, that she went to the extreme. And by extreme I mean she posed as a Sheriff to release him from jail. Yes, you just can’t fake true love.

Quick thinking and faster acting heavy equipment operator is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Lan Junze was working at a construction site in Fushun when he saw a building go up in smoke nearby.

Lan reportedly heard screams for help and drove his crane to the scene of the fire, which was just a few blocks away.

In a viral video, Lan is seen using the crane to help residents escape the fire, which appears to have started on the building's ground floor.

In total, he saved 14 people in less than 30 minutes.

And the second half of Layla, which is really a completely different song, was supposedly written by Rita Coolidge, who went on to hook up with Kris Kristofferson.

84 Jewells.... you're a natural to make the big step and get into carving wax and learning the "lost wax" process in the Jeweler's Arts.

And you can set up every bit of the needed equipment on as little as 4 ft. workbench.

Gotta get you plugged into your local wholesale Jeweler's Exchange, too.

Seriously. Precious metals and gems at wholesale, so you can turn a profit on what you make at retail.

The one out on the S.W. side of Houston is in a six-story building....with rather impressive security. As you might imagine.

If you haven't already got yourself set up as a Subchapter S Corporation, with local Sales Tax filings, DBA and etc... it's time, cause you'll have to have all that to gain an account at a Jeweler's Exchange in any given city.

But then, you can also write off a metric shit ton of expenses from your enterprise, and end up (likely) with a damn near zero tax bill, at least for the first few years.

If you go this route, let me know. I still have some links for top-end sanding, buffing & polishing equipment and supplies.

I can't tell you how many women have been traumatized by hearing boys/men joke about fishy vaginas. This is why so many of us fell for the bullshit advertising that assured us of the need to vaginal sprays and douches, and the resulting paranoia over oral sex. Plenty of boomer women feel so uncomfortable with the idea that a man might be offended by their scent that they either decline oral sex or suffer through it, imaging that the man is "tolerating" their scent. And this hasn't changed for millennial women either, apparently.

Well... that was unpleasant.

Yknow, I didn't give much thought to what guys did with guys, in my youthful, naive, Playboy-fueled girl-hunting days, but I guess I always just presumed homo guys' main thing was orality. I liked BJs, so I could sorta get it. (But, I did wonder, aren't girls' throats, you know, different than men's? No Eve's Apple. Well, that's all beside the point.)

I wish I had not been subsequently enlightened about the male homo culture's emphasis on (and dire consequences of) male anality. One relatively recent article linked by Ann Barnhardt expanded that knowledge in ways I really didn't need. Like zombie's Fulsom(?) Street pictorial.

I have a somewhat unconventional idea about people. As I've gotten older, I've thought of my various relationships as sort of an art collection. I keep the ones I want close at hand, aka "in the gallery," while others are in and out of storage. Some are never worthy of being part of the collection.

In the end, I'd rather have a very small number of like minded people than lots of superficial, annoying relationships.

Yeah the girl's weird AF, but she's kinda grown on me. Hard to categorize... her earlier work has been described as "dark folk". Her newer stuff is... ?. Her vocal range is pretty incredible. Not so much in pitch, but in tonality... That's achieved through facial gesticulations that are at first off-putting but, well you get used to them. They're not very evident in her produced videos, but they are in her live performances (see, e.g., her performance on KEXP: https://youtu.be/75l9YdDrgvw ).

Finally, this vid is truly Moron-worthy, although it would be more so if she used real guns:

I'd never really thought about it, not being a savant of gopher sociology, but once he said that, it made sense.

The gopher has to burrow along underneath plants to eat their roots. Now that HAS to be a relatively labor intensive task, unlike grazing on the surface, so the more mouths the gopher has to feed, the bigger the burrowing burden becomes, rather quickly.

True story. Einstein was in Greenville, SC way back the day for something. My great-uncle was the shop foreman at the Greenville Cadillac dealership. Uncle Al was looking to buy a car for his son. He stopped in that Caddy dealership and that uncle met him.

Einstein settled on a Ford. Now, that uncle was GM man through and through and that proved to him that Einstein wasn't all that 'cause he was stupid enough to buy a Ford.

My father, a Ford man to the same degree, used to razz the uncle with that.

Here's why I use three ">" symbols. Take away calculus.* Then Einstein would have been an accountant. (He started out as a patent examiner.) He was basically following Newton, as has everyone else in physics since Newton. Everyone in physics - hell, in all of serious science, and even in non-serious subjects, such as economics - has been following Newton ever since, and just working out the ramifications of his ideas.

* I'm neglecting Leibniz here, but Newton's contribution extended far beyond calculus per se.

You'll get the hang of driving one, maneuvering and steering in short order. However, to be good at it, and to handle the array of implements one uses, will take a while.

It will be a while before I'd turn her loose and not worry.

She's got to learn steering brake and hydraulics.

Me, I become one with the tractor and implement. It becomes an extension of my body, like my own limbs. I know where every part of the tractor and implement are at all times, and the effect every control input will have.

It took me 15 years to get to that point. Then you get old and lose it all.

Will report as best I'm able.

I got EXACTLY that one time. I was invited to spend time at the science city in Japan by the Japanese government. I had a good friend there, someone I'd met in the US, and once when I asked something, he'd looked pained, and said "it is difficult." Namely, "no way."

The Brits have a corresponding expression: they'll smile and say that they'll do that "when the time is right." Meaning "when hell freezes over." Thatcher used that expression once, in regard to the European monetary union, IIRC, and at that point I understood what she meant.

Two additional features, if I read things correctly.

* The aforementioned German internal propaganda film, extolling their Luftwaffe & Flak Gruppe's effectiveness in shredding the hated Amis and their B-17s. In excruciating, horrid detail, they've warned.

* A bit of a mini-documentary as to the making of Cold Blue, and the dedication given to "getting it right".

So, a bit of a "brace yerself" (myself included) warning in the billing, there.

Estate sale was so-so. Good sales on Friday, AC crapped out on Saturday ($1,300), and heavy rain on Sunday.

Probably cost a good 30% or so in lost sales. *sigh*

House sits empty now.

I sort through such things as I hauled back to Galveston with me. Vast numbers of photos, most destined for the bin.

And bills. Lordy, the bills.

Here is the definitive paper on the confrontation between General Relativity and experimental observation:

https://arxiv.org/abs/1403.7377

That was written in 2014. Before LIGO's historic detection of gravitational radiation.

----------------------------------

General relativity has held up under extensive experimental scrutiny. The question then arises,
why bother to continue to test it? One reason is that gravity is a fundamental interaction of nature,
and as such requires the most solid empirical underpinning we can provide. Another is that all
attempts to quantize gravity and to unify it with the other forces suggest that the standard general
relativity of Einstein may not be the last word. Furthermore, the predictions of general relativity
are fixed; the pure theory contains no adjustable constants so nothing can be changed. Thus every
test of the theory is either a potentially deadly test or a possible probe for new physics. Although
it is remarkable that this theory, born 100 years ago out of almost pure thought, has managed to
survive every test, the possibility of finding a discrepancy will continue to drive experiments for
years to come. These experiments will search for new physics beyond Einstein at many different
scales: the large distance scales of the astrophysical, galactic, and cosmological realms; scales of
very short distances or high energy; and scales related to strong or dynamical gravity.

695 Well, I am going to go to bed. Spent a productive day in the shop. I have a friend's '78 Triumph Spitfire on the hoist. Needs brake service. But when I got it up there, I discovered that the left rear end of the frame rail was rusted through on the bottom, around the tie-down eye. Now, all that particular section of frame does is support the back of the trunk, and the rear bumper, but it still did not look good.

So I cut about nine inches out of the bottom the hat channel, including the section with the tie-down eye, and part way up each side of the hat channel, until I got past the rust. Then I cut strips and panels of new steel, formed them to fit, and welded them in place. Ground the welds, welded the tie-down eye back on solidly, and ground those welds. A little black paint, and a little roofing patch asphalt to act as undercoating, and it looks almost like new. And certainly strong enough to do what it has to do.

Now, on to brakes and suspension bushings tomorrow.

One of the things he touched on was SETI. He believed that any aliens would be using lasers, optical pulses to communicate, not radio. Much more efficient and directional, and he did some work on that.

I'm not claiming it, it's just something that occurred to me. The GOP hates Trump and Co so much it wouldn't surprise me that they would do something extreme that would turn off voters and damage their chances of winning. Sad that I could even conceive of that, but there it is.

806 Ever wonder why the Left is so terrified about Roe v. Wade being overturned? Because every legal scholar in the country, even the leftists, recognizes and admits that in terms of legal reasoning and Constitutional Jurisprudence, Roe v. Wade is one of the most badly reasoned and badly written Supreme Court opinions ever written, on the same level as Dred Scott. The only defense, even from it's backers, is that "oh well its been the law so long we can't change things now."

But the actual decision itself is monstrously idiotic and self contradictory - it was naked legislation from the bench, pulled out of thin air by a liberal court that wanted to be King.

811 >>Don't get me wrong I am not opposed, but the timing seems to be that they don't care if it damages this particular President's chances of reelection, or any other GOP candidates chances.

Here's why I think now is the time: First, people are disgusted by the Left's sudden urge to legalize abortion up to the moment of delivery. Just read that consistently, for years, there's only been ~13% support for late-term abortion. Reminds me of immigration issue in 2016: 75% or so wanted less immigration and laws enforced, while all but one candidate said: open borders = love. The one guy who sided with the majority won.

Second, this election has a lot of candidates pushing for socialized medicine. Think people inherently understand that abortion push today dances on the line of killing a human being for various non-medical reasons. This is exactly what happens in socialized medicine: they withhold care to certain groups to save money, because they "care" about the quality of life of the patient.

These two issues are connected, and it is critical we don't cross that threshold into legalizing murder.

So we should cancel the elections next year for they are a foregone conclusion?

One, the abortion laws you are seeing proposed/enacted are more than likely a response to NY's move to legalize straight-out infanticide. (I hear the new NY state song is "Silent Scream" by Slayer.) I would wager that if NY didn't do that, you wouldn't see the reaction in other states now.

Two, as noted before, there is ALWAYS the possibility of negative voter reaction - no matter what.

Three, NO MATTER WHAT, the Republicans will be accused of hating women/gays (who are, far and away, THE most important people in America, don'tcha know), and anyone else who are not white men. To which I say, if this is the case, screw it, you will be criticized any way no matter what you do, so there's nothing to lose.

And let's just go ahead and hold the 2020 elections anyway, at the very least just to double-check your predictions.
