In The Beginning There Was The ONT

The Greatest Generation

Gen X Is The Best Mess Ever

I know I'm biased, but it really feels as if we were right....there! On the cusp of fullfilling what America should be. Vietnam was behind us, Reagan had ended the malaise of the 70s and the economy was booming, racism was a dead letter and so was the Soviet Union. We were a decade away from the millenium and the sky was the limit. Then the Gramsian time bomb that had been planted in the institutions went off and it all went to hell. * Sigh * Well, back to work. The country ain't gonna rebuild itself. (so...damn....close!)

Puck

How do you know that the call was terrible? FanDuel Sportsbook will refund Blues bets due to blown call on game-winning goal. That's the second time this year the Sharks have reaped a huge benefit from bad calls that the NHL has later admitted were wrong. Oh well, just means it'll take the Blues 6 games rather than 5. Question is, can anyone beat the Bruins?

Those trying to colonize America are in for a very unpleasant surprise. Would we be better off without leeches sucking off the welfare and profit of the American system? Without question. "You didn't build that" applies solely to them, and whether they are put to work or driven out, American productivity would improve.

Go drag racing.

111 I had a younger brother and sister, brother was close, sister was 6 years younger. We were all friends, and we all fought, and naturally we both teased and picked on little sis at times. Now when we talk, sis says my brother was the one who would push, or shove, or just be mean physically - he grew up to be the athlete, so go figure. But she laughs and says I was much much worse, because even though I never did anything physical at all, she says I was into psychological torture, and apparently was quite good at it.

And it happens without some academy giving its seal of approval, in fact the academies are always scrambling to see what words that bubble up will be short-lived slang and which words will become full-time adopted purposeful words. English is driven from the ground, from the users, and the academies are reuced to watching and recording.*

167 There was an interesting show on PBS about the roots of the Arab / Jew conflict. They proceeded to state that there never was a country of Palestine then proceed to call all the Arabs Palestinians. The thrust was that the Jews moved in, bought land nobody else wanted for top shekel and built settlements. The Jews thought that their presence would create a growing economy that would benefit everybody and therefore they would be accepted if not welconed. The Arabs couldn't have that and soon the Jews began hiring guards (many of them Arabs). The producers blame the start of the real trouble on a new influx of Russian Jews who were cowboys and formed an all Jew protection force. Then in 1913, an Arab merchant stole a bunch of grapes from a Jewish vineyard. The Jewish cowboys beat him up. Other Arabs felt that they beat him too severely for what was a minor crime and rode to his defense. One thing led to another and a gun battle erupted in which one Jew, one Arab, one horse and one camel were killed. The producers contend that these events shocked everyone and everybody wanted a negotiated settled. But then Archduke Ferdinand went and got himself shot in Sarajevo and the negotiations never happened.

The but for WWI theory smells like bullshit to me and I notice that they never mentioned the Koran's unfavorable comments about the Jews as a possible aggravator. Further, the Arab are clearly presented as the good guy/ victims but, still, it was interesting. The show wasn't entirely anti-Jewish. Many of the immigrants were Marxist and many of the settlements were socialist and the producers gushed over how wonderful that was.

We were running around Columbia last night and spent a bit of time at the B&N, and my cousin noticed a book that was trashing Trump, calling him "crazy" or something like that. I don't remember the title; but she looked at it and asked, "Why do people write books like that? I mean, if you had to choose between Trump and Hillary, obviously you'd pick Trump, right?"

I was grinning the rest of the evening.

189 I noted yesterday that the hot new "woke" trend in Portland is to inform young people that they have no future, because they will soon be killed by global warming.

Another example today, from Twitter:

My daughter is facing similar choices re higher education. How can I expect her to make serious investments in a future she doesn't think she'll get to see?

I'm confused about how to teach through this and worried about how to parent through this.

I'm guessing that telling her daughter that Portland will still be there and will still be quite livable forty years from now isn't one of the options this "woke" mother is considering.

I think that the Church of Global Warming is rapidly turning into a millenarial cult.

Wikipedia:

Many if not most millenarian groups claim that the current society and its rulers are corrupt, unjust, or otherwise wrong, and that they will soon be destroyed by a powerful force. The harmful nature of the status quo is considered intractable without the anticipated dramatic change.

Ding, ding, ding.

Hopefully, this won't end up like Jonestown or Aum Shinrikyo.

It will for a few, but the good part is that for most, it's going to end up the same way that all Hellfire and Brimstone/Apocalyptic Cults end up - after years go by and the Apocalypse never comes, the children of the cult come to the realization that their parents were all idiots who wasted their lives on fantasy. And that's when the cult dies.

And for the ones who were so frightened that they never bothered to have children at all - well, given a few years, that's always a self-correcting situation.

The world is always inherited by the people who believe in having kids. Funny how that works.

If only that were so. This is why the Left made sure that it has an absolute stranglehold on education, and why the Left pushes for everyone to go to college.

I think there are several competing theories on how Mizzou's "Tiger" mascot came to be. I've heard that one before, but it's not the only one out there; if it was, they surely would have changed the mascot by now, because social justice and all. This stretch of Missouri was heavily pro-Confederate, though, and the rivalry with Kansas does date back to that point, so it's a possibility.

Posted by: Soothsayer -- Fake Commenter at May 17, 2019 10:38 PM (rTCJ6)

Mimeograph: you typed a "master" using a special form like carbon paper. The master was affixed to a roller, and sheets of copy paper, slightly moistened with methyl hydrate (wood alcohol) passed between the roller and the platen. The moistened paper absorbed a little of the ink of the master. First few copies might be kind of smudgy, and the last ones got pretty faded.

Gestetner: you typed a master, on a special form with a cardboard header that read "Gestetner" punched as an array of tiny holes. Typing it knocked filler out of the fine, fine mesh that comprised the heart of the master. They made a correction fluid that could fix a mis-typed character. The finished master was wrapped around a drum (the "Gestetner" holes fitting over similar pins in the drum), and special ink was forced through the openings in the master, and onto paper as it was fed between the drum and a roller. If it sounds like screen printing, that's because it was.

I think both machines could be had in hand-cranked and motorized versions. Gestetner generally made better copies, IIRC.

There has been no net productivity increase from smart phones. From the late '80s through the '90s, you could see productivity increasing from the use of computers (desktops).

The interesting thing is there was no such effect as smart phone use took off. The speculation is that any time saving features are canceled out by the time wasting features of the phones.

Gall comes from a very negative, cynical place in the cold, dark soul of the coward, knave and lout.

340 Portland will still be there. Mostly the suburbs up on the surrounding hills, which tend to be more conservative than downtown Portland proper.

Actually, the richest part of Portland proper, the West Hills just west of downtown, has terrible soils, and will do very badly in the Cascadia quake.

I live south of Portland in the hills, which has much better soils. My house is wood frame and is anchored to the foundation. I'll take my chances.

I talked to the head of the local water district about what they were doing to seismically reinforce their system - we agreed that the first step was not to be in the West Hills.

No. 1 Son is I guess a millennial. Born '92. This story is about how not only millennials are idiots.

He was in college, a film major. They were supposed to make a music video so he and his buddy decided to do Atlantic City and their script had someone shoot someone. So he asks me if I can bring him the CO2 BB pistol. You know, the one that doesn't have the orange tip and looks just like a real 9mm?

So I'm me. I'm old. I don't think of things. I find the BB pistol and drive it to his campus. They start making a movie.

A passerby sees a gun on campus. She calls security and they swoop down on the boys. Turns out she's his advisor's secretary and she couldn't find her cell phone. If she'd had it she'd have called 911 and the campus would have gone on lockdown and No. 1 Son would have been expelled.

That never occurred to me. I'd have blamed myself so much. Oh, of course I'll bring a real looking pistol to campus for you. Why not?

I'm not really adjusted to the current age.

Hate to tell you, but the only people who were addressed as "Dr." at my undergraduate college and my grad school were the sawbones and tooth pullers. Any Ph.D.s on the faculty who insisted on being called "Dr." would have given away the fact that they had graduated from a less-than-elite school. It was simply understood that everyone on the faculty had a Ph.D. or they would not have been hired in the first place, so no need to address them as "Dr."

Of course, this was before the present glut of Ph.D.s on the job market-- we all know the current jokes about taxi drivers and baristas with doctorates, not to mention the adjuncts working for slave wages.

For a number of years in Kandahar there was a Tim Hortons outpost, complete with a list of proper lingo (ie. a double-double is a coffee with two creams and two sugars). One time the Canadian defense minister showed up with the co-founder of the company. Guess who was treated like a rock star?

Then the lights came up and I saw them knuckles. I said, "Oh, no!" And everybody was laughing at me. WorldStar. I said, "Why didn't you say anything?" Then I heard that sultry voice. "I didn't say anything, Dave Chappelle, because I was having a wonderful time. And I wasn't sure how you'd feel about it." I said, "You knew how I'd feel." And she said, "I'm going home. I don't want any trouble from you." I said, "Home? It's only two songs left. I mean, we might as well . . . finish the night." And we ended up having breakfast together. Oh, grow up. That doesn't make me gay. I just titty-fuck them. Those titties are as real as any titties in LA. It was two o'clock in the morning. I was just borrowing a little friction from a stranger.

Also, Neil Young had a local band in Santa Cruz back in '77 called Snail. They did an album. You paid to get into this old theatre, real SF-era hippie stuff, and then they played like they hated you.

All feedback, and it's one thing to say "You couldn't talk in there," and quite another to observe that people's mouths moved and no apparent sound was made. An hour of that was enough to put me off Neil Young and off deliberately too loud playing for life. Later I started to find more and different things I did not like about Neil Young.

I think that besides visiting the troops in Canada and abroad, he's likely got a higher opinion among those in the military because for the better part of two decades now has taken time out of his Coach's Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada to pay tribute to Canadian troops who have died in the line of duty.
As for the population in general, he's probably wearing out his welcome. Among Bruins fans, he's good. Fans in Gen X and higher, we're used to him. I think he'll stay on as long as he can, and Ron MacLean has made it clear that if Cherry gets canned, he'll quit in protest.

It is hard to tell, but you get the sense that she never explained herself or even tried.

On the other hand, they may not have given her a chance. It would be hard in that situation to get an answer that would be acceptable.

Neil Young had a few good songs that worked well with his whiny voice. He actually did a pretty good cover of the old Fats Domino hit, "Walkin' to New Orleans".

And I think he and his wife had an autistic or otherwise handicapped child, and he did a concert album to raise money for a school, called The Bridge School, which had helped his child. So i will give him props for that. But mindless Lefty, otherwise.

526 Very speculative rumblings among scandal afficionados that Dir. Wray might be on the way out. Hmmmm.

One WH correspondent (OANN( claims PDT said something to her this week that means Wray should be updating his resume. Possible that when Barr said he wasn't getting answers that added up, he was referring to a specific meeting with Wray, and CIA/DNI chiefs.

Based solely on his post-IG report press event last year, I would not be too broken up if he left. One of the most surreal - in context - things I can recall seeing.

535 Tech support note for moronhorde.com users.

About two months ago the hosting provider where moronhorde.com lives got bought out. In April we were forcibly relocated to another network segment, which caused a 12 hour outage. Mainly because no prior notice was given and the new IP address wasn't made known for about 11 of those hours.

We are now in the second day of another major outage. Again, no reason has been given for what is going on, and the hosting provider's network status page claims no problems.

So, hopefully before I have to pay those assholes for another year of hosting, the whole operation is going to have to move. Which means another outage in the future.

Sorry about all of this, but you are getting your money's worth. I'm not, but you are.

To ace and the cobs: Yes, I should have emailed this. In my defense, the email server's a bit offline at the moment.

567 The Friday Night ONT is different than I remember.

Back in the day it was sometimes the Big Party in Weird Science, or
the Big Party in Sixteen Candles, or the Toga Party, or the Party at the

Now it's like sitting in the living room with your folks, waiting
for Gunsmoke to end so you can all head off to get some shuteye.

576 Similar to the LA governor. I recall listening to a morning radio show (Free Beer and Hotwings, actually--weird) where the hosts interviewed David Koechner (Anchorman, the Office, and, well, you'd know him if you saw him). He went through a similar experience when his wife was pregnant. Doc found something "wrong" and pushed for abortion. They refused. The punchline? Healthy baby. the diagnosis was wrong.

there is a real, palpable line being drawn regarding abortion. Something big is happening.

610 I've been exploring and playing around with my new Linux Mint installation and it's pretty nice. The Firefox browser worked right off the bat and I got online. I haven't been able to set up e-mail with Thunderbird, though. It keeps saying I have the wrong password, and I've tried every one I can think of. It's been a long time since I set up my e-mail accounts on my Mac, and I don't remember whether the passwords were created by me or assigned to me by Comcast. I may have to call Comcast for help.
I successfully copied a file from the Mac hard drive to the Linux hard drive, but I had to enter my password to do that. That will be a bit cumbersome to copy thousands of files that way, but at least I know it can be done. Baby steps.

Why didn't you just upgrade your Mac or go to Windows? Seems like a hassle setting up a Linux machine.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia's phone at May 18, 2019 03:34 AM (LSECD)

It's a bit complicated. I kept my old Mac OS 10.6.8 because I have Adobe software that I bought and works with it. Adobe has since gone to a subscription-based model and fuck that sideways with a rusty pineapple. If I upgraded the Mac OS the existing Adobe software wouldn't work with it and I would have to start paying Adobe.
So I didn't upgrade for years. Mac is now at 10.14. I bought a new hard drive and thought about installing a new OS on that while keeping my current installation on my old hard drive. But I discovered that a) my machine will only work with systems up to 10.11, and II) I would need to upgrade to intervening versions to get there and Apple no longer sells them. I'd literally have to find the discs at a yard sale.
So I decided that it was easier to go to Linux, which I've been wanting to try for a while. Windows was never an option. I installed Linux Mint on the new hard drive, and I can boot to either OS at startup.

You can turn off all javascripts on the site through the browser or you can get an add-on to select which scripts to turn off. With Firefox I had been using uMatrix. It gives you total control over all scripts and files and pics and everything that are on a web page. Sometimes it's a pain in the ass (with sites that break if you take away the wrong scripts) but usually it's a godsend for stopping all sorts of shit from showing up on your pages.

Go to the add-ons or extensions thing in Firefox and search for uMatrix. Other add-ons that do the same thing will show up too, so you can see which you like. If you don't like the add-on you can easily uninstall it, anyway, so give it a try.

657 Mimeograph: you typed a "master" using a special form like carbon paper.

Fascinating. Is wood alcohol what gave copies that great smell?

658 Mom's up.

Being away from her house makes her more confused. Can't leave her home alone, tho.

Hopefully breakfast out will go okay.

662 Today is 18 May. In 1944 Pappy Eromero was waiting in England with the 29th Infantry Division to sail to Omaha Beach on 6 June. And all I have ahead of me today or next month is working and paying taxes so our invited invaders can have free luxuries neither Pappy Eromero nor myself could afford.

Ever do any tuckpointing, I think they call it, on basement walls?

How do you get the concrete all the way back in the cracks?

100 year old house here too.

Thanks man.
