Indian Widow
Joseph Wright of Derby Joseph Wright is most known for his paintings of scientific experiments during the Late Enlightenment era. His work has many traits associated with both Neoclassicism and Baroque, but he was neither. This specific work, however, is heavy Romantic. It is totally allegory that combines symbols from different cultures to mourn the decline of the Native civilizations of the Americas.
Another title for this work is The Widow of an Indian Chief Watching the Arms of Her Deceased Husband. The woman in the dead center of the work is rendered in a highly classical way. Her clothing is more like the robes and clothing you’d see on a Greco-Roman goddess. She is topless and barefoot, another subtle sign of her classical origins and a clue that she is an allegory. In a lot of European art of the Colonial Era, the four continents were personified as idealized women with appropriate costumes, accessories and/or animals. The woman here is America, who was almost always a nude or nearly nude female with an elaborate feathered headdress. In many Amerindian cultures feathered headdresses are symbols of pride, identity and achievement, but here it is pathetic. It is stripped and droopy. America is diminished. In addition, some scholars have concluded that Wright is using the Mohawk Nation as the model for this woman based on the designs on the surrounding items. To the British, the Mohawks represented American Indians in general. As the most Eastern of the Iroquois, they would have been the first group from that Empire that the British encountered. The Iroquois were very respected by the British and the Mohawk became their aesthetic representative and the stand-in for Indians generally. You’ll find this imagery in a lot of British art of the era. The tree stump next to her is draped with her husband’s tomahawk, bow and quiver, pipe and cloak, all symbols of his warrior status, rank and authority. The tree stump is a European symbol of death—a life cut short. Her pose is a traditional pose of sad acceptance of fate, thoughtfulness and melancholy. Indian power and prestige has died and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. She sits on a cliff overlooking the sea while a volcano erupts in the background creating a black swirling cloud and lightening that just so happens to frame the woman and draw our eyes to her and her grief. If she is a Mohawk, then this is New York. Last I checked there are no volcanoes in New York not in Eastern America, which is what the British would have known, so the volcano has to be pure symbolism. It may be modeled after Vesuvius. Pompeii and Herculaneum had just been discovered some decades before and were still influencing culture by this time. Pompeii and Vesuvius therefore became symbols of lost civilizations, tragedy, and apocalyptic events. Joseph Wright of Derby is depicting the fall of the American civilizations, maybe the Iroquois in particular. It is a depiction of the tragedy of the Noble Savage, a very Romantic concept. Yeah, the Noble Savage idea is BS, but it was a big deal back then. Especially with the Romantics. The idea that the less civilized you are (in relation to the Europeans), the more pure you were. Pfft. It inspired many a work of art though. It would also influence the Realists in the next generation.

This went on to influence a lot of other post-Enlightenment writers, like Karl Marx, and pretty much all later Utopian movements.

A lot of Traditionalist art will have "Venus" in its title just to disguise the fact that they are soft core porn of some dood's mistress. The most famous example is Titian's "Venus of Urbino". Portraying Venus is classy.

There was a Vermeer exhibit here at the National Gallery about a year and a half ago. This one wasn't in it to the best of my memory but his paintings are extraordinary in person. The way he depicts light is incredible.

Not to run down Native Americans, but if you go to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, you find that they don't have much in the way of museum type stuff. Maybe it is a Western way of thinking, but we go to a museum to see "stuff" that is representative of whatever it is that we are going to see.
A LOT of the SMAI is devoted to oral tradition. But beyond a shit-ton of beadwork, and a few canoes, there isn't that much to see.

One of Titian's friends, Pietro Aretino, saw the painting and recognized the prostitute's body. He literally laughed himself to death as a result.
As I said, probably bullshit, and I'm most likely getting the details wrong, but it's a fun story nevertheless.

I'm kind of underwhelmed by this piece. It's competent but the colors don't really work for me and the fact that the widow is turned away takes some emotion from the scene. Her pose doesn't really seem to be one of mourning rather than just generic tiredness. Plus the mountain is smoking.
(I shouldn't read the JJ thread before I have a chance to relax from my commute. These judges going full-on partisan make my blood pressure go NASCAR and I don't need that these days.)

The victims were a missionary party. The Indians attacked because they blamed them for the disease sweeping the Indians, particularly measles. The incident began the Cayuse War which was far more deadly than the measles. Both sides were basically acting in good faith and yet tragedy all around. I basically see it as original sin.

The Judge has delayed the trial until they can figure out what's going on. The prosecutor admits to using the malware but said it was just an effort to see who was leaking trial information. The Air Force called B$ on those claims.

Modeling was considered degrading for women of good standing because you were very likely to be nude with various unknown men gawking at you. Prostitutes became the go-to models. For cowboys they have all kinds of pioneer equipment, a real stagecoach, guns 'n' stuff. Lots of cowboy art.
For the ancient Amerinds part, they have arrowheads, smoking pipes, and similar endurable artifacts. Mainly, some mechanically animated dioramas of what they think some native villages might have looked like, based on holes in the ground where the sticks and fire pits were.

My favorite is T1, so simple, so direct - and T1 has my favorite ending as well. So ominous, yet revealing nothing except dread. I thought it was perfect.
That's the film that launched the franchise, and Arnold's career.

Agreed.
The character of Kyle Reece is perfect. You bought him as a soldier and as a lover of a woman he's known only in a picture. Sarah Connor is both damsel and determined survivor. Arnold is alien and unstoppable.
The SFX haven't stood up, but the rest of the movie has.

I find plots easy.
Of course, my work tends to be much more character driven, so plot is more of a secondary concern.
My first book (which I'll never let anyone see again) was all about world building. It was meandering and pointless. It was also unreadable.
Since I've adopted a fairly stringent pre-writing process that includes a minimum of 2 outlines and character profiles of every primary and secondary character, I get plots down early and then just fill in with character.

I've had a good writer who's a friend tell me (and I find this to be very true) that "Good stories are easy to write, most people can tell some. Good Endings, now that is a hard, hard thing to do."
I think most of our television screenwriters are proving that to be the case.

Picture your ending first. If you know your ending, and know how you want your reader to feel at the end, that gives you a goal to work towards. Even if you aren't an outliner, especially if you aren't an outliner...know your ending first.
After that, I make the characters as real as possible and then just plop them down into situations and let them act realistically. Sometimes I have to perform plot interventions to get the story moving towards goalposts.
When it works, its magical. When it doesn't work, it's drudgery. But at the end, you can't tell when reading it which parts were magic and which parts were work.

I never would have guessed that Wright of Derby had painted that picture: not just for the romantic figure, but for the fact that it was an outdoor scene - he almost never did landscape - and it lacks his signature chiaroscuro. I would have guessed that it was painted by one of the Hudson River school, or a German romantic: the Germans were, and are, big into the Noble Savage thing.
