Doris Day, the perennial girl-next-door whose career as a singer and actress spanned almost 50 years and made her one of the biggest Hollywood stars and most popular entertainers in the United States, has died. She was 97. The Doris Day Animal Foundation told Fox News Day died early Monday at her Carmel Valley, Calif., home. The foundation said in an emailed statement she was surrounded by close friends and "had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia."

We have a collection of the Carol Burnett Show. Like many of the Horde, I grew up watching this incredibly funny show. It leaves a very sad feeling knowing those times are gone, and America is no longer a place where innocent, fun joy can be had in shows like this. All of the cast members were superb, and there will just never be another time like that that ushered in her show. I miss this America. I truly do.

I've seen some stills or publicity shots from that period, and Doris was much more entrancing than she was in her comedy heyday of the mid- to late Sixties. Hardly fair, I guess, to judge her hotness quotient from her later appearances. (But then Raquel Welch was still incandescent at 50, and so is Sofia Vergara, who's 49 now.)

If I were to guess, it might be a bastardization of corpus, the general Latin word for the body. Either inferring a deep body laugh, or a failure to control the body.
A few years of people mishearing things, and a few more of people misusing the phrases that went with the original word, and now you got something that makes no sense at all.

She worked 10 years as a secondary ed teacher at a number of public and private schools and spent the last 12 years home-schooling our daughter and administering several home-school co-ops and performing liaison between their groups and the local school district and the state. She doesn't want to return to the classroom, but has applied for positions at a few colleges in admissions / registrar departments. She's looked into corporate training, office manager, recruiting, and other positions with various companies, but no luck so far.

I disagree that he "borrowed", it's just that they had a similar manic style. Robin Williams was unbelievably inventive, it's like 50 different people lived inside of his head, and you never knew which one was going to jump out at any given moment.

At his best, Williams was really funny but he was really overboard at times (particularly during his cocaine phase). When he dialed it back he was more effective but repeated viewing was not good, the same stuff keeps coming up, the same voices, etc.

I had a friend in the 1980s who saw a Robin Williams routine
where he stole Dick Shawn's material from start to finish.
Can't prove it but my friend was sure of it. He still liked Robin Williams but thought it was a dirty way to treat an older comedian. Dick Shawn was totally wasted in his role in

Most of John Cleese's funniest characters are based on a snotty asshole - and Cleese is enough of a self-recognizing snotty asshole to watch himself and change the performance into something twisted and hilarious.
In Tim Conway's case, one of the ways you knew he was a nice guy in real life was that his root-of-funny was a guy who was a little out there and child-like. Not all there, but completely guileless. Which meant that the learned guile of a clever comedian could sneak up on you - the character was dumb, but the joke planning was devious.

Sure, the Bob Hope guy we know was a character he played, he was shy and quiet but took on that role to be someone likable and funny in public and in the job. A lot of the greats were that way.

I've heard more than one comedian/comic actor express frustration that dramatic acting is trivially easy by comparison, but that nobody takes you seriously as an actor until you do some of those roles. And that it's difficult to make that transition because audiences often don't accept it.

My favorite parts of the old Carol Burnett show were the "Eunice" sketches, where the "Mama" character originated. But in the original Eunice sketches, both Eunice and Mama were both a lot harder edged, and downright mean, than they became in later years. (especially Mama) A big part of this is because "Eunice" was based on Carol Burnett's real family growing up in Texas, and it's obvious that a lot of the memories weren't very happy.
My favorite is the "Sorry!" episode, mainly because this is every game night my family ever had, all wrapped into one:

I don't agree. I thought his scenes were laugh-out-loud funny, as were most others. It would have been easy to go overboard with some of the skits, but they didn't. I thought it was perfect.

No, not exactly. The song was kind of pretty, I guess, but it was the voice that stood out --- so clear yet warm, remarkably bright.
I was surprised when the announcer said it was Doris Day.
I think I knew she sang some songs but, honestly, I had no idea she was that good or that she had a super-successful singing career before hitting the movies.

Foster Brooks was so good at his drunk-trying-to-conceal-his-drunkenness routine that he fooled one of my fellow theater students -- a graduate student who was a good director, no less. He actually thought Brooks had gotten in front of the camera drunk.
