Tim Conway, Dead at 85

Funny man. Always seemed like a sweet soul.

Fox News article here.

Conway died Tuesday morning after a long illness in Los Angeles, according to his rep Howard Bragman. His daughter, Kelly, told Fox News on Tuesday her father is "at peace now."

"The love he gave us, and the laughter he gave the world will never be replaced, but will be remembered forever," Kelly told us. "He is at peace now but I will miss him every second of every day until we meet again in heaven."

And Doris Day died yesterday at 97.

Doris Day, the perennial girl-next-door whose career as a singer and actress spanned almost 50 years and made her one of the biggest Hollywood stars and most popular entertainers in the United States, has died. She was 97.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation told Fox News Day died early Monday at her Carmel Valley, Calif., home. The foundation said in an emailed statement she was surrounded by close friends and "had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia."

I was shocked to learn that she was still alive. I had no idea. Two weeks later -- dead. She, along with Clint Eastwood, was for years a sort of demi-god ruling over the city.

We have a collection of the Carol Burnett Show. Like many of the Horde, I grew up watching this incredibly funny show. It leaves a very sad feeling knowing those times are gone, and America is no longer a place where innocent, fun joy can be had in shows like this. All of the cast members were superb, and there will just never be another time like that that ushered in her show. I miss this America. I truly do.

84 My local CBS station in the late Sixties and early Seventies apparently chose to opt out of some of the network programming. They would run whatever show they picked out of the new fall lineup at a different, usually very inconvenient time. And they picked some real losers. Carol Burnett was first (moved to Monday nights at 10:30), and then came The Mary Tyler Moore Show (shifted to Saturdays at 5 pm). Good thing we locals were spared those debacles, huh?

The second year of each of those shows, they ran at their proper day and time. Channel Four at least owned up to its mistakes, however quietly.

Yeah. A while back Hollywood attempted to reimagine a Doris Day/Rock Hudson film with Renee Zellweger and Ewan MacGregor - "Down With Love." Fail! Makes you appreciate what Day did after seeing that.

I was just in Carmel recently and saw Doris Day's house and hung around
the lobby of her hotel. (Famous for being the world's first
"dog-friendly" hotel.) I was shocked to learn that she was still alive. I
had no idea. Two weeks later -- dead. She, along with Clint Eastwood,
was for years a sort of demi-god ruling over the city.

A friend of mine who lives near to her in Carmel just told me a story, it seems her friends and local fans gathered next to her house on her 97th birthday (on a golf fairway), and sang happy birthday to her. I guess she was incapacitated and reclusive towards the end of her life.

If you've even seen Doris Day in her late 1940s movies, she was quite

sexy and gorgeous - -not in a MILFy way as in her much later Rock

Hudson romcoms, but just straight-up sexy. Seek out those early films --

particularly " Romance on the High Seas" and "My Dream is Yours."

I've seen some stills or publicity shots from that period, and Doris was much more entrancing than she was in her comedy heyday of the mid- to late Sixties. Hardly fair, I guess, to judge her hotness quotient from her later appearances. (But then Raquel Welch was still incandescent at 50, and so is Sofia Vergara, who's 49 now.)

138 I watched some interviews with the Carol Burnett cast in later years, and what made the Elephant sketch (above) so great was that they had a script, and they had all rehearsed it, and everybody knew their lines - but as soon as they got in front of a live audience, Conway would go off-script and just start ad-libbing the most ridiculous things possible. You can see the terror/laughter in the other cast members faces as they are trying to stay in character, but none of them have any idea what he is going to say next.

And also, watch how Conway is an absolute master of Comic Timing. He says a line, and then he just stops and waits, waits, waits - right up until the moment that one of the other cast members is ready to speak and go on, and then he drops another even more hilarious comic bomb on the scene. It's absolutely brilliant!

If I were to guess, it might be a bastardization of corpus, the general Latin word for the body. Either inferring a deep body laugh, or a failure to control the body.

A few years of people mishearing things, and a few more of people misusing the phrases that went with the original word, and now you got something that makes no sense at all.

Take him out of your dead pool.

Kirk is over 100 years old, and the rules of Dead Pool Game are simple, 100 minus age died = score.

Pick 5 celebrities at the beginning of the year. The biggest score at the end of the year is the winner.

A good strategy is to pick a younger musician or actor that likes heroin or fast living. Usually just takes one of those.

Doris Day got 3 points. Tim, 15.

As someone with a generally warped view, I've played the game over the years. A buddy of mine had Bob Hope for years, and when he finally passed, at age 100, my buddy won zero points. We still talk about that some times.

I diagree that Robin Williams borrowed from Jonathan Williams.

I had a friend in the 1980s who saw a Robin Williams routine
where he stole Dick Shawn's material from start to finish.
Can't prove it but my friend was sure of it. He still liked Robin Williams but thought it was a dirty way to treat an older comedian. Dick Shawn was totally wasted in his role in

271 I think most really great "effortless" comedians succeed due to being able to take an aspect of their personality, take a step outside themselves, and stage manage it into something funny.

Most of John Cleese's funniest characters are based on a snotty asshole - and Cleese is enough of a self-recognizing snotty asshole to watch himself and change the performance into something twisted and hilarious.

In Tim Conway's case, one of the ways you knew he was a nice guy in real life was that his root-of-funny was a guy who was a little out there and child-like. Not all there, but completely guileless. Which meant that the learned guile of a clever comedian could sneak up on you - the character was dumb, but the joke planning was devious.

My favorite parts of the old Carol Burnett show were the "Eunice" sketches, where the "Mama" character originated. But in the original Eunice sketches, both Eunice and Mama were both a lot harder edged, and downright mean, than they became in later years. (especially Mama) A big part of this is because "Eunice" was based on Carol Burnett's real family growing up in Texas, and it's obvious that a lot of the memories weren't very happy.

My favorite is the "Sorry!" episode, mainly because this is every game night my family ever had, all wrapped into one:
