Gun Thread: Happy Mother's Day! [Weasel]

ma barker 2 scaled.jpg
Kate "Ma" Barker c. 1932

Well today it seems fitting to pay tribute to the shooting Mom's in our lives. In fact, all the shooting 'ettes deserve a special day of their own, don't you think?! Ma Barker, pictured above, certainly fit the definition of a shooting mom... or did she? While there is some question regarding her level of participation in the "gang" bearing her name, some of her sons were unquestionably familiar with firearms. In any event, it's an interesting story, some of which is chronicled at the Oklahoma Historical Society's website, and Wikipedia even has some interesting things to say on the subject.

Unsolicited Opinion
Last week in the comments the topic of women shooters came up during a discussion of sports where neither men nor women had an inherent advantage over the other. The case in point was, as I recall, some male transgender wacko who was competing as a female and sweeping all the girl's weightlifting records. Since I find the whole transgender sports thing to be idiotic bullshit to begin with I do not propose to open that discussion again, but it did get me thinking about my personal experience instructing and coaching ladies in what is otherwise a male dominated sport; long-range competitive shooting.

I have had the honor and privilege of coaching some of the very best long-range shooters in the world, both men and women. I have also had the pleasure of introducing many new shooters, again, both male and female, to recreational target shooting. I have always held the opinion that women are much better students, regardless of experience, because they more readily accept instruction. It seems only the very best male shooters; those with years of experience and a very high degree of professionalism and dedication to the sport, have the same level of concentration, focus and willingness to accept instruction as the ladies possess naturally from day one.

I have also observed that women seem to handle the stress of competition much better, too. One important aspect of a coach's job is deciding when a promising shooter is ready to move up and compete in an important national or international level competition. Match shooting may not seem like a particularly stressful activity, but depending on the circumstances there can be an enormous amount of pressure on everyone involved. Much of the needed focus is gained through experience, but no matter how experienced they may be, some shooters never seem to get a handle on it. Stress, and a shooter's response to it, always plays a critical part in their ability to perform when it counts and you're not going to have a good day as a team if one member is coming unglued on the firing line. Developing new team shooters always includes a critical assessment of their ability to control themselves and perform steadily when under a significant amount of pressure, and women almost never seem to have a problem in this regard.

So having said all of that and to answer a question that no one really asked, I think women shooters, especially as beginners, have an advantage over the men. Plus, they usually smell better and are nicer to look at, too. So to all the ladies out there, Moms and otherwise, I hope you had a great day. We love you!

Well now let's see what else there is to talk about:

Here's a short article from NRA Shooting Sports on choosing an AR15 Match Barrel. While most people will buy a complete rifle, or a complete upper, there are those who build their own and need to have at least a starting point for discussion with their gunsmith. The article gives you a few points to think about.

***

Here's a series of articles from Shooting Sports USA on the history of the National Smallbore Outdoor Rifle Championships:
Part 1: The Seed is Planted
Part 2: The Roaring Twenties
Part 3: The Depression and Wartime
Part 4: Post War Reorganization

I was lucky enough to attend the National Fullbore Matches at Camp Perry one year before the NRA kicked the F-Class shooters out. Camp Perry is an amazing place to shoot, and you can feel the history just being on one of the ranges, each of which being named for a Medal of Honor recipient. I recommend anyone who shoots in one of the divisions still holding their national championship there to go at least once in your life. Even if you're a casual shooter, it's the experience of a lifetime.

***

Here's a Guns America Review on Bushnell Spotting Scopes. If you're a serious shooter, or birdwatcher, or peeping Tom, you need a spotting scope. The quality of the optics is clearly the most important factor, but you don't always have to spend a fortune to get good glass. If you're considering one, look around at your local range to see what brands others are using and ask questions on how much they like what they have, and more importantly if they would buy the same one again.

Undesirable Outcome

Following up on our recent reloading series, this week's entry comes from our pal Blake who was recently at the range when someone nearby had a bad day. Blake explains:

This happened today, it's from a Glock chambered in 40 S&W, I believe. The reload blew out the bottom side of the case and the magazine went flying out of the gun. Fortunately, the shooter wasn't hurt, other than a powder burn on his hand along with a small blister. Best guess: The defect in the case was missed during the reloading process, though one of our very experienced shooters says that Winchester brass is known to be brittle.

Looking at the case, I'd say there was a defect somewhere! Either in the powder charge, or in the case itself, or both. If you look carefully, you can see a ring just above the case head and the rupture occurred along this line. You will normally see this in rifle cartridges which have been reloaded many times and are nearing a case head failure. The brass has stretched and become weakened from multiple firings, and this line is your indication the brass no longer safe to use. The ring could also simply have been caused by the overpressure against the chamber wall when it ruptured due to an excessive powder charge. It's difficult to say without inspecting the case. At any rate - pay attention to what you are doing at the reloading bench! This could have easily caused much more significant damage to the shooter's hand and the gun.

Thanks for sending this in, Blake!

Sometimes a surprisingly small increase in powder can cause a yuuuge spike in the pressure profile. There is a lot going on inside those cartridges!

16 isn't the rear edge of a Glock case partially unsupported?

that would make it easier for a weak case to blow out.

Posted by: redc1c4 at May 12, 2019 07:09 PM (MasTK)

17 I have read that Glock .40 pistols are essentially a 9 mm frame with a .40 barrel dropped in, and that to accommodate the loading ramp for the .40, there is a larger area of unsupported cartridge case head when the pistol is in battery. Glock recommends not using reloads in their .40 caliber handguns for this reason.

51 No rifles this week, just my carry revolver and pistols which I try to shoot every other week or so.

First up I shot my carry Taurus PT709 Slim in 9mm. Good shooter, accurate and easy to handle. Plus can fit in your pocket with a pocket holster if you want to.

Then I shot my ankle gun, a S & W 642 Airweight in .38 Special. I carry it in an ankle holster as a back up. Has the concealed hammer and barks like a bulldog but a decent shooter and good for a trigger workout.

Last is my briefcase gun, my Star Firestar in 9mm. Old skool, all steel and feels like a mini 1911. Good shooter and very accurate.

I like to shoot my carry stuff often and after so many years they are like old friends to me.

pretty much the whole rear of the case is unsupported, right about where you see that rupture.

Hello, there! Just wondering if anyone had done one, and what it's like. It seems to be geared towards first-time rifle shooters, but I don't want to assume that, and I wouldn't want to assume that I couldn't learn something from it.

It just came to mind when Weasel mentioned training new shooters, and I was wondering if it would be a worthwhile field report for a gun thread.

I've been wanting to do one of these for a while now. What is a good rifle to take the course with? I have an A2-ish AR and a CMMG .22LR kit for same. Also have a 10/22 but it has like 8 lbs on it (maybe exaggerating, not going to to try to weigh it just for comment accuracy). I could probably borrow a stock 10/22 if that would be better.

In my extremely limited experience, people from countries with very restrictive gun control who aren't familiar with guns but are interested in them also take to training well. They know what they don't know and are paying attention to the instructions. The highest scoring recruit in my boot camp division was from England and had never held a weapon before.

65 Appleseed is good training for anyone, unless you are an expert.

it's also handy if you've developed bad habits over the years.

some of the instructors are better than others, but that's the same everywhere, for everything.

i was having a bad weekend the day we went, and wasn't well anyway.

my "coach" refused to focus on one thing at a time, and kept trying to correct everything i was doing "wrong" at once, and it was frustrating.

shooting at the stupid 25 yard targets sucked too. i routinely qualled expert all my years in uniform, except, of course, on the simulated 25 meter course.

they are NOT the same thing as shooting for real.

Posted by: redc1c4 at May 12, 2019 07:34 PM (MasTK)

66 Cartridge case base blowouts like the one illustrated can be the result of multiple factors. An unsupported case in the chamber of the pistol is usually a prerequisite, but can be aggravated by abusive cleaning and sizing.

Bob, HogMartin, many Appleseed events are *not* .22-only, if you'd rather shoot something else. That said, my choice of M-1 for my very first Appleseed was... sub-optimal (though it was all I had at the time IIRC.)

My first company commander in the Army met his wife in the late unpleasantness in former Yugoslavia. She was Croatian and had been a sharpshooter in some paramilitary unit. I saw her a couple of times and she looked like an ordinary homemaker but I understand she had more kills than syphilis.

75 54 ... "And absolutely correct on the cartridge base being partially unsupported in the '03's."

I have a low number '03. I've fired regular 30-06 ammo with it with no problem but that was decades ago. Now I only use it for low pressure cast bullet reloads. Very accurate out to about 150 yards and comfortable to shoot, even with that soft steel butt plate.

I believe the 'problem' with the low number '03s was greatly exaggerated and Col. Whelan's (sp?) tests confirmed that. But it became gospel for some reason among the shooting fraternity.

I may have to check one out. The nearest ones this summer seem to be 60 miles in one direction or 70 in the other. Fundamentals training never hurts. Likewise unlearning bad habits like redc1c4 mentioned. Like front sights on pistols. When did they start adding those? Does everyone know about pistol front sights? Why haven't I noticed them before? Those things are a game-changer.

Sorry, unclear on my part. It's the 10/22 that has the bull barrel. It also has no sling swivels so maybe not good for position shooting, which I gather is what they teach at Appleseed. The AR is plain jane except for the #4 shot filling the compartment in the butt stock.

I haven't had any problems with the CMMG kit yet but I haven't used it all that much so far. Not so bueno with Federal 711B but no problems with any high-vel ammo so far.

86 Went shooting Wed and today.

a lot of testing on Wed. afterwards I tried my MP15 at 200 yards for the first time. 5 shots, 3 hits! And the 3 hits were a 6" group. The other 2 shots... who knows.

Actually first time I tried shooting *anything* over 100 yards. Amazing how well those little peep sights work.

Today... Well, I shot the pistol (S&W victory) well. The .22 rifle was mystery all of a sudden. The scope settings that seemed to be right on last month were shooting way off today.

It had been shooting RIGHT ON at the 55 yard target. When it set the Elevation and Windage dials to what it was before, I was consistently and high and to the right. I had to move down 12 clicks and left 6 to get it to zero again. Then when I went to the 100 yard target and made the appropriate adjustment to elevation (that had worked before) I was shooting 3 inches low.

The scope *had* been holding its zero well - today it seems like it wasn't holding it at all.

Then I tested more brands of ammo in the MP15. I don't think I've found one that stands out so I think I'll buy a lot of cheap stuff until I start shooting it better.

Don't own a .40, don't own a Glock - but isn't that combo semi-famous for this sort of failure - unsupported case when chambered, something like that? Obviously any case can fail, but I thought there was a particular isue with the .4O/Glock combo?

93 "tress, and a shooter's response to it, always plays a critical part in their ability to perform when it counts and you're not going to have a good day as a team if one member is coming unglued on the firing line. Developing new team shooters always includes a critical assessment of their ability to control themselves and perform steadily when under a significant amount of pressure, and women almost never seem to have a problem in this regard."

My understanding is that men and women have different adrenal responses to stress. Men get their hit immediately, while women get theirs up to five minutes later. A male that hasn't learned to cope with the adrenal hit is going to have a tougher time at it than a woman. But, they can eventually learn how to deal with.

I am uncertain if adrenaline has any benefit for shooting.

108 Weasel and Blake:
I don't know if this has been covered, but Glock specifically says not to shoot reloads in the factory barrels. The chamber does not completely support the round; the result is that you get an expansion on the bottom of the case. I couldn't figure out what was going on with my g21 .45 reloads, since they would not chamber all the way, so the slide would not go into battery.
I bought SS rifled, fully supported bbls from Wolf in which to shoot reloads - not a problem since.

109 Late to the Gun thread. Had a good day even in the rain yesterday. Ran our first Service Rifle shoot under the new *spit* laws. If went well as all the 100 year old bolt actions banged away. Must refine the timings again as the bolt actions just cannot reload as quick as you like to think so. I decided to handicap myself further by using a single shot rifle . Well it did handicap me as a posted the lowest score I have every shot. Oh well lesson learnt.

Posted by: NZFrank withanM2 at May 12, 2019 07:55 PM (bgJ0E)

110 I don't believe you can say with any authority that the stress of a shooting competition is more naturally or better handled by males or females. It really has more to do with the individual personalities and grounding. I have one who is cool as a cucumber and. Can beat most males on the range. I laugh when she plays like she's ignorant, let's guys who her shooting tips and acts like she can't shoot... then starts putting them dead center in the first few rounds. But then, she has a father who has taught her to be cool under fire, breath, concentrate, have SI and all the other techniques. Oh yeah, and how to bust balls or throat punch if necessary...

My oath. Had a mil shoot some time ago with a Army team. Our team were in the finals and doing very well. The last shooter was a older and reasonably experienced shooter. He normally would shot a 75 -80 per cent result in practice. His first team final. To win we only needed him to shoot a 49 percent score. We cocked up by telling him that, he shot 48.........

122 In my very small unscientific sample - fit only for UN global climate studies, not actual science - female new shooters have been easier to teach, and safer. Good friends (couple) at the range once. The wife, fine. Deliberate, asked questions, went slowly. My friend picked up the Model 66 and did a semi-auto supported grip on it - so his support hand is badly exposed to gases from the cylinder gap - and I fairly grabbed it from him, too fast to even anything first. He's got a major blustery know-it-all problem in situations where he knows zilch, so not totally out of character.

127 weasel > Match shooting may not seem like a particularly stressful activity, but depending on the circumstances there can be an enormous amount of pressure on everyone involved.

I'm with you on this one.

I've played football and basketball. Other than shooting free throws and kicking field goals, those are both mostly reactionary. Easy.

I imagine competitive shooting to be extremely stressful.

I've played golf for 50+ years. Considering the time between shots (in both golf and competitive shooting), the mental discipline to relax and to sloooooow things down is a hard thing to do in the heat of the moment.

Pressure will bust a pipe.

Pressure makes diamonds, too.

Hogmartin, most are 2-day events with morning check-in at 830am. The speed varies with group size and skill level, of course, normally you'd expect to be done 5-ish each day. For someone totally new, there's a LOT to learn and instructors do their best to give some one-on-one time with every student.

You'd want to bring an open mind and a good attitude, plus of course food / water / hat / mat / rifle or 2 / GIsling / ammo.

136 Just got done spending hours compiling new chrono and ballistics data, punching it into an app to spit out dope cards for various typical conditions, and printing hardcopy and stuffing into binders.

Of particular interest to those who have precision rifles - most good ballistic apps let you set up trajectory info for a given round with an offset built into the zero. What this means for non-competition shooters from a practical standpoint is that you can dial in your rifle for your chosen round - then go buy a half dozen other loads, see where they print relative to that (which often involves horizontal change in impact), then set up your software to tell you what to dial for that round *with the rifle zeroed for the initial round*

Pick your samples wisely, and you should be able to walk into most gun shops, grab a common match variety of your caliber of choice, and have a dope sheet ready to go on demand without having to zero for it.

This is not the sort of information you want to have to go out and gather the hard way when you suddenly find you need it.

I don't golf but I've been told by some that do that bullseye type shooting (handgun or rifle) is very similar to the putting game in terms of being more a mental discipline than a physical skill.

Especially the 1866 repro/45 Colt, which I need to get used to so I can shoot the silhouette match next month.

And a 2-gun match next Sunday (centerfire rifle, shotgun). Considering going back to the Mosin, if I can get this one guy to bring his Enfield again. Otherwise, The Greatest Battle Implement Ever Devised, as usual (M1). And there's a handgun match the day before. Depending on weather in the kitchen, might do both ....

I've found a lot of stress can be taken off the shooter if I walk them through what to expect from me in terms of calls and other instruction. 140 122 In my very small unscientific sample - fit only for UN global climate studies, not actual science - female new shooters have been easier to teach, and safer.

Concur. I have literally trained or introduced 100's of Lumpy Solders and civvie females to rifle shooting and its true. Females tend to listen, concentrate and respond better than males. Males have pre-conceived ideas about weapons and compared to the ladies, just resist listening to detail and advice. I also enjoy my Joey Bidet moments with the ladies in teaching the standing unsupported position and "helping " with their stance.

142 In my experience it's easier to teach women to shoot safely and accurately, especially the complete newcomers. (Kids are in their own category.) They want to learn and will pay attention. Just have to be sure to keep recoil light and with reasonable barrel lengths. No snubbies to learn on. I prefer to start with single shot guns or revolvers. It's too easy for newbies to lose track of a cocked, loaded semi-auto. Eliminate all possible distractions and dangers while the student is internalizing the safety rules, sight picture and trigger discipline.

If I could, I would start most new shooters with muzzleloaders but most won't have the patience those guns require.

Some controversy about whether she was the hardened criminal that the Feds portrayed her as, that she may have been little more than an accomplice to her children and not even likely to have been violent.

Some say the Feds made her out to be more dangerous than she was after they killed her in shooting into the house where the gang was holed up.

The old WWII era Army uniforms were called "pinks and greens". The pants were sort of pink. I thought they were just khakis, but they had a slight shade of pink.

The new uniforms will be very similar, but not that pink shade.

I didn't know until I read, but they had phased out the "Army greens" uniform, and the main uniform above the combat gear because the "blue" uniform.

With the new "pinks and green", the blue uniform will go back to being the dress uniform and not the standard uniform.

Have several Mosins, this one was "extra" (bought it in a rush right before a change in CA's idiotic gun laws a few years back reduced the value/fun of a C ampersand R FFL-03 license). Wasn't the year/stamping I was after - small mix-up with the guy at vendor - so easy to let it go to make room for other boomsticks. Sold some 54R ammo with it. May continue to trickle that out onto the market, as I have what is technically known as a "crap-ton" of it (mostly bought very cheap, and of course in the nice vacuum-sealed spam cans, great for long-term storage).

But as I don't buy gunzzz often, easily, or frivolously, I'd expect selling a gun will continue to be a rare experience for me.

180 I grew up shooting at Perry. From wee tyke to soldier, I fired everything imaginable there- including tanks. At airplanes. Would wake up in the morning as a youth hearing the guns go off as the plane flew overhead. The roar of the takeoff was deafening if you were anywhere close (they used JATO type rockets to send them off).
You cannot appreciate just how damn far that 1,000m range is until you point an IRON SIGHT down at it- and wonder how someone can hit that at that range so accurately.

The one they're testing looks like the USCG working uniform. Which is fine, because the Navy should've adopted it back in 2002, instead of that oddball blue digicammie thing.

If the Navy keeps with tradition, the new uniform will be uncomfortable, expensive, show paint readily, prominently hilight any pudginess, and not be approved for wear off the pier where they might be seen by decent folk.

201 Cicero there have been discussions among the ROs at my club about how to handle, um, "interesting" groups of shooters. Apparently there's been no serious weird incidents for a few years. In my time, there was only one time I had some vibes about a group. I think my vibes were justified - but the leader was cool and a military vet, and his g/f was incredibly hawt, so I "kept an eye" on her, and everything worked out.

We're very close to what in a normal country would be the border (barrier ends sort of close to there), always heaps of BP and supporting military activity (mostly helicopters) and usually BP vehicles near the gate, so while remote, not a permissive-seeming environment for sketchiness.

204 I haven't been for a wee bit, another oral surgery and pain killers. I don't even recognize the inside of my mouth any more, but oh well.
Took the .45 to a new shooters class here locally. Only two people showed up, me and a lady that the instructor knew fairly well. Once we got to the range he spent the majority of the time with the lady and very little with me. He came over to me twice. I was getting frustrated and was shooting at the precision targets and he told me not to get ahead of the instructor. The next time he came over he basically said that the .45 is a "sight over" pistol and I should aim higher at my target. He spent the rest of the time with the woman. I paid $150.00 for that class and got little out of it. I did run about 80 to 85 rounds through the .45 but I was getting frustrated. All of my shots were low and to the left. On the range, I got very little instruction so I finally packed it up and went back to the classroom.

I'm pretty damn good with my 10/22, but crap with my .45. I can hit center mass, but I'm not that accurate. Now that I'm off the pain killers I'll head back to the range, but damn, .45 ammo is expensive. I'm thinking I should look into wadcutters and try to save some money.

Re the "crushed peaked cap". That had a really cool look. IIRC, only the Army Air Corp were allowed to do that back in the WWII era. To allow wearing the headsets when flying planes, they had to take out the wire stiffener, and the headphones would mash the cap down. After a while, it would have that permanent look.

But on the Air Corp guys could do it. Current Air Force regs don't allow one to crush the cap.

But from what I'm reading, the new pinks and greens hats will be made to give that crushed look.

Only thing they're missing is that their targets are not moving, and also don't have at least partial cover.

Yeah, scores would be very low. And each point would be very hard-earned, and based on at least a semi-realistic scenario. Anyway, tastes vary, but that's the sort of match I'd like.

Yes, it's that scene. There's some discrepancy between what Omar says about his Gold Cup and what the pistol actually looks like though, and I don't know enough about 1911s to know if he's bluffing or if he means it or if it's a TV prop goof.

I don't want to ruin it, in case anyone else wants to try to spot it.

226 So, despite my best intentions I was not able to make it the range Saturday and so my SLR remains unfired by me. I did get to inspect my M14S and have come to the conclusion that it really is not a great battle rifle. It is more that the Army wanted to upgrade the M1 in a way that they could tweak to do well at Camp Perry even at the expense of the line troops. They took a 3MOA battle rifle and made it capable of 1MOA in the hands of expert armorers and shooters even though it would be a 5 or 6MOA in the field.

It does have a better gas system though. Probably what the M1 should have had back in 1936.

There are others here with better information. Pay special attention to your trigger finger. You should use the pad to pull the trigger, not the lower part of your finger. The first magazine from any pistol, first time to the line on any given day. Really. That's all. I go over everything twice to make sure I'm not forgetting any of the rules or anything, then once more. I also have a shrieking whimpering atavistic terror of loud noises and things that buck when I'm holding them. Not kidding. After the first magazine, I drop the mag, go to low retention/ready, and just breathe a couple times. Then I'm good for the rest of the day.

No idea why.

Males have a tendency to react to another male telling them what to do too sensitively. On the alert for the snide, the sneering or just plain domineering.

I would expect that it would vary among the males. I would want some discussion with other instructors of both sexes (are there female instructors) relating how the different genders react.

Not making any accusations or criticizing. I have no clue how you do what you do. It just struck me that I know males react better (in fact all humans react better to female humans) to females than males on average.

There was some brouhaha at the annual convention revolving around the President (Ollie North) and the CEO (Wayne La Pierre) basically accusing each other of mishandling funds. 250 Grump, what's better about the gas system vs. the M1?

It is essentially self regulating I think. The piston/gas plug arrangement will only hold so much gas before it vents. And it is a form of short stroke. Maybe mid-stroke if something like that is a term. Rather than the gas pushing directly on the op rod, it move a piston that pushes against the sorter stouter op rod.

258 The M1 has the long long op rod because, in 1936, the Army would not allow gas ports in the barrel so the original had that gas trap thing past the muzzle. After they relented, Garand didn't want to redesign the whole system so he put a gas port back a bit from the muzzle end.

Did you watch the video from Silverado Shooting Academy (or whatever the name was, definitely "Silverado" something) that somebody posted a couple of weeks ago? I haven't been to the range since seeing it to try it out but he makes a good case that what we're probably doing is pushing the gun in anticipation of the recoil and that the way to train yourself out of it is exactly what you just said: extremely slow trigger pull with live ammo, paying super close attention to when you start to push the gun down. Stop and force yourself to overcome the reflex.

Granted, Im a novice, but after shooting skeet last week I met a guy who had a trigger adaptation where the he could pull the trigger but the shotgun fired only when he released his finger from the trigger. It seemed logical but also dangerous!

294 I'm not aware of any great stress when I shoot. The key word is 'aware'. When I shoot carefully, apparently I tense up to concentrate and keep a steady hold on the target. Much as I love any kind of shooting, after a while I have to take a break because I'm stiff and not as steady. Part of that is age but not all. The funny thing is I have no idea it's happening until I take a break to change targets.

The exception is trap shooting. That is so fast and instinctive I don't have time to tense up. It helps that I'm a decent wing shot.

It's linked in a couple of gun threads a few weeks ago (see archive below).

I usually take more than one handgun to the range at a time and FORCE myself to shoot the first mag or cylinder painfully slowly until I reacquire (I hope) the feel for that gun and trigger. Sometimes all I do is fire really slowly and deliberately.

298 Have heard of people who have a bucket of sand in their garage. For loading/clearing double/single carry pistols. Put on ear protection, point into the sand bucket, load/clear. Just in case. Guess the neighbors might be curious if you touched one off by mistake.

Similar to the clearing barrels they had at the finest USG overseas war-zone resorts. For clearing gunzz prior to entering buildings.

299 A little, but buying an air pistol trap and shooting it across the basement. I never do, because I'd feel terrible if the cat wandered through or got hit by a ricochet.

When we moved into this house, I figured out that if I blocked opened both laundry room doors, I could have a clear 10 meters from the hallway into the garage. I spent a whole day building a plywood backstop that would swing down from the garage ceiling and mount a target box filled with plumber's putty. I used it once and it scared the dogs so badly that I haven't used it since.

326 For an amusing image, I once tried to shoot skeet with a bolt action 12 gauge. It made the doubles just a bit of a challenge.

But that shotgun did okay with trap shooting. I sometimes shot against guys with $5,000 or more special trap guns. Instead of laughing at my relic they started remembering their first shotgun, often an inexpensve Sears bolt action 12. More than one asked to borrow it for a round. Big, nostalgic smilles all around when they finished their 25 targets.

Our egos are so fragile that if we directly tell another man what to do (unless in a chain of command) we are likely to end up in a duel (before the existence of soyboyz).
Women, on the other hand, tell men what to do without compunction. It's their job!

Oh. It has been speculated that another reason that women are better shooters is that,in testing, they generally have better fine motor-skills and eye-hand cooridination than men.

"This happened today, it's from a Glock chambered in 40 S&W, I believe. The reload blew out the bottom side of the case ..."

Extremely late to the thread, but this failure looks like the one that is reported on the ".40 S&W" Wiki page.

Apparently, certain semi-auto pistols (includoing Glocks) do not provide "support" (i.e. steel, in the form of barrel or block) around part of the the base of the .40 S&W case ... the brass case ( a considerable amount of it in poistol design terms) is the only thing between the powder charge and the external world.
