The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I confess that from such freedom [of speech], inconveniences may sometimes arise. But what question was ever settled so wisely that no abuses could possibly spring therefrom?” Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza

Quote II

“Saying ‘bomb’ on a plane — that’s just being stupid. Mine is just funny.” Dillon Shane Webb

Quote III

“Adulting is something nobody prepares you for, but you know it when it happens. It’s the unglorified part of being on your own,” Rebekah Fitzsimmons

Quote IV

“If I were Donald Trump Jr.’s lawyer, I would tell him, you don’t need to go back into this environment anymore. “You’ve been there for hours and hours and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation. I would call it a day.” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

The steam is rising, "F*ck you, you little ba$tards. Eat sh!t and d!e. Contrary to your lazy train of thought and any curiosity, you do have a mother. And there is nothing wrong with celebrating a day for mothers.

A grade school has eliminated Mother’s Day because they no longer believe in males and females and gender doesn’t exist. Seriously, this is the garbage they are teaching kids.

The Brunswick East Primary School in Melbourne, Australia, has changed its annual Mother’s Day fundraiser where kids can buy little gifts like coffee mugs, candles, soaps and the like.

But now, instead of being called the Mother’s Day fundraiser, the table will be called the “appreciation stall.”

The State of Idaho has had enough with burdensome rules and regulations. Or what happens when there is government grid lock. Idaho repeals its regulatory code. H/T ArthurK

Something rather remarkable just happened in Idaho. The state legislature opted to—in essence—repeal the entire state regulatory code. The cause may have been dysfunction across legislative chambers, but the result is serendipitous. A new governor is presented with an unprecedented opportunity to repeal an outdated and burdensome regulatory code and replace it with a more streamlined and sensible set of rules. Other states should be paying close attention.

The situation came about due to the somewhat unconventional nature of Idaho’s regulatory process. Each year, the state’s entire existing body of regulations expires unless reauthorized for an additional year by the legislature. In most years, reauthorization happens smoothly, but not this year.

Instead, the legislature wrapped up an acrimonious session in April without passing a rule-reauthorization bill. As a result, come July 1, some 8,200 pages of regulations containing 736 chapters of state rules will expire. Any rules the governor opts to keep will have to be implemented as emergency regulations, and the legislature will consider them anew when it returns next January.

Lucky Idaho.

Whatever Bernie Sanders and AOC say, run, run away, run like the wind. Socialist Poster Children want us to bank with the US Postal Service.

Unfortunately, some members of Congress seem more interested in having the Postal Service expand its losing business into new areas. An overhaul of banking and credit card systems floated this week by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) would effectively convert the Post Office into a bank of sorts, offering checking and savings accounts.

In other words, it would take a government agency that's already failing to compete with private sector alternatives in the shipping industry (despite massive structural advantages) and let it fail in competition against private banks as well—and would force poorer Americans to rely on that floundering institution as their primary provider of banking services. As Reason's Peter Suderman wrote yesterday, this is "not a new idea, but it is a bad one."

You first Mr. I Own 3 Homes.

There are so many things wrong with this story. H/T redc1c4

A Michigan mom allegedly shot dead by her 9-year-old adopted son feared she was raising “the next serial killer,” her family said.

Pauline Randol, 51, was shot dead in her Fawn River Township home Monday and her young son, a second-grader, was charged with murder the following day.

Now a grieving daughter of the victim has revealed that her brother, who was adopted three years ago, had a history of mental health problems and “just recently started snapping,” terrifying their mother.

Are we really that far behind the former East Germany? Don't care for what someone said? Now you can report them.

Watch what you say, because the person sitting next to you could be reporting you to law enforcement.

Gone are the days when Americans were unafraid to voice their opinions or make snide comments in public. Because DIGIT Labs will turn smartphones into bias reporting devices.

According to a PHYS.org article, DIGIT LAB's new app allows strangers to report someone for exercising their first Amendment rights.

"The first of its kind, the app accepts reports beyond crimes captured in police records. Users from around the country can document all incident types, from derogatory epithets written in bathrooms to slurs yelled from a car window in addition to violent assaults."

The joys of living in a HOA.

Many automotive enthusiasts keep old cars around for a variety of reasons: some like working on a particular platform, and others enjoy not having a car payment. However, some develop a strong attachment to their beloved car and take pleasure in the nostalgia that it brings to them. Andy Lipka is one of those people, but he's facing a tough battle with his Homeowner's Association: lose the pickup truck or lose the home.

Lipka's 1965 Ford F-250 is his pride and joy. He describes it as well-running and "pretty close to perfect," despite the fading Tropical Turquoise paint and its bouts of surface rust which peppers the entirety of the truck. The owner says that he doesn't mind the blemishes, nor does he considered it to be damaged; it's simply way it "evolved over the years." In the automotive culture, this finish is called "patina" and has a very niche following which considers the mix of a dulled paint job and rust to be a badge of honor.

Why anyone would leave their child in a government school anymore is beyond me. An Oregon couple sue an indoctrination school district regarding transgendering their child.

When does in loco parentis cross over into just plain loco? A story from Oregon earlier this week demonstrates at least one instance where the line got crossed. A lawsuit alleges that a teacher took an 8-year-old aside to repeatedly question his gender identity, and then began giving him instruction on transitioning to female.

Now the parents are struggling to work and their 9-year-old son is still confused

How many rounds should you be permitted to have in your firearm? As many as you damn well please.

If four home invaders broke into your home, do you want a magazine of 10 or 30?

Speaking of self-defense, according to extreme heterosexual Spartacus, you don't need no stinkin' self-defense.

I am very much one that is against handguns. And I know, in my urban environment, I see little to no need for guns at all, and I think that the availability of guns and the ease with which even young people can get their hands on them is just horrendous, and I would, if I had the power to do so, I would. In fact, we're even looking towards making, doing some local level handgun legislation. I'm going to take every step I can to get guns of the hands of those who commit crimes or those who might commit crimes."

It's not the gun, it is the person who uses the gun.

The principal of the Summerwind Elementary School is also in their targets, after she emailed the photo to the entire school’s staff with the cryptic subject line, “Room 223 score,” NBC News reported.

The photo was shared hundreds of times on email and social media.

The five were placed on administrative leave while the district investigates.

Make-A-Wish is a great program. It's even better when a recipient is a donor. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

As a teenager with a heart condition (cardiomyopathy), Chris Boland asked for and was granted his wish to take a shopping spree by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Now, the 27-year-old is paying it forward and raising money for the charity with what it is calling the Butler Street Wish Crawl.

Participants who pay $30, every penny of which goes to the nonprofit, can begin the crawl at 1 p.m. Saturday at Belvederes, 4016 Butler St. The crawl will proceed across Lawrenceville, stopping at Industry Public House, North Park Lounge, The Abbey on Butler and New Amsterdam.

147 A strange aside regarding foreign adoptions?

So, did you know that not all the kids in orphanages in Russia and Eastern bloc countries (the poor ones, like Ukraine) are really orphans?

Not that unusual for people - married people! - to have just too many kids and decide to put one or more in an orphanage I guess. And like, visit them? How must that feel to be the kid who mom and dad just didn't feel like raising? especially when the family comes to visit you?!!

And what could be, is possibly they are selecting the children with disabilities for this, maybe?

just a guess. oh and the fetal alcohol syndrome probably doesn't help.

I think that some of the kids with the worst issues are the ones that stay with the addict or abusive birth mother for a number of years. By the time they're removed from the birth mother or parents and put up for adoption, they're already pretty screwed up. It's a tragic situation because these kids need decent homes.

178 20% of all American male children ages 5-17 will be diagnosed with ADHD by the time they graduate high school.

That number is two to three times higher than girls.

In this country, being a male is clinically diagnosed and institutionally certified as a disease.

I have nothing against females. My mom is one, my sis is one, my daughter is one. My cat and dog are too. On the off chance I ever find myself having sex again with someone else involved in the activity, I'll guarantee she'll be one.

A quick look up: The official Treasury estimate of unfunded liabilities is $55T. That's about equal to World GDP.

This is the unicorns shitting ice cream and skittles assumptions figures (GDP growth just fantastic, and in about 5 years, current law will kick in and make them clean up their act. They always change this to keep that 5 or 10 years ahead).

A realistic look places that figure at $220T.

IOW, Uncle Sam would need to put $220T, cash, in the bank drawing interest right now in order to meet all its promises to pay in the future.

Ain't gonna happen.

I live in an HOA. There's a pretty strict no boats or RVs in driveways rule. Every summer a few people decide the rules don't apply to them. They get fined. Then they whine like little bitches about how unfair it is and how they can't afford to pay for storage (which is bullshit because if you have a $60K boat or RV you can swing $100/mo for storage). But whether or not they can afford it is irrelevant. They knew the rules before moving in. If you don't' like it, buy yourself some land, build a home and park 12 RVs in your driveway without a care in the world.

I just looked up "Gross Polluter". If a vehicle gets tagged with that, you can't get it certified, but there is no law that says you have to junk it.

A vehicle only has to meet the standards for the year it was built in, so the standards for older vehicles are more lenient than newer.

If it's a Gross Polluter, there are hoops you must jump through to get it certified again, but if you can get it to pass the emission standards, you can drive it.

I have hated "open floor plan" homes pretty much since I was old enough to know what they are. When you have to "create spaces with furniture", you've already lost. Even the most expertly decorated "great rooms" look like barely organized shit.

And from what I just read, any vehicle over 25 years old is exempt as a classic car. And any vehicle per-'75 is exempt. But that's well over 25 years now.

So, that explains Jay Leno's collection. He doesn't have to smog test any of 'em if they are over 25 years old.

231 WA state is getting rid of its smog testing next year. Which is incredible. It's a govt tax collecting program that is ending. That shit never happens. Like never, ever.

Kudos to WA for doing this.

The reason is that something like 95% of cars now pass the test so it's pointless to keep testing when virtually everyone passes. Unlike CA, WA's test only applies to cars 25 years old or newer. And virtually every car from the 90s on is going to be pretty clean burning. And as time goes on, that % will gets closer and closer to 100%. Which renders the tests useless.

233 lol, you know, the open concept / open floor plan is the design equivalent of disposable razors. they knew it was going to be hot for a while, which would mean that everyone would knock down their walls then, when it was over they would have to put the walls back.

246 Interesting Trumpentwatters tonight. He retwatted something by Fitton of Judicial Watch that said FBI Dir. Wray is "protecting the same gang that tried to overthrow the President through an illegal coup".

Actually think some Wray stuff is misinterpreted, or at least interpreted with certainty and passion when the facts are not clear - but to me he bombed quite early with his surreal post-IG report press event performance (did you know their intern program applications were way up?). And more inside feedback I've had is very mixed, and mostly tracks my initial reaction (wrong guy for the job at this time in history). But we'll see.

This is like counting chickens before the eggs are even laid, much less hatched, but a lot of focus with some is now turning to speculation about how big, and bad, the *pre 2016 campaign* abuses and scandal may turn out to be. So - the largest (by far) scandal in US history as just an apetizer, of sorts.

Wouldn't be the first time I have had experiences with folks in the auto-repair business who were poor historians.
Strangely enough the wrecking yard was just a quarter mile down the road from the smog shop and happily took it off my hands for no charge.
Another vehicle I owned would have cost more in repairs than it was worth (turbos are expensive), so I had to pay a wrecking yard to pick it up. Almost new tires, too, and, also, a set of studded tires mounted on rims. People in Cali don't need studded tires. The recycling center doesn't take tires still mounted on rims.
Last I heard Cali was trying to extend the trash-by-date from 1976 to 1983.

You wouldn't expect a lawyer to be able to fix your car, nor should you expect an auto mechanic to know all the provisions of the law.

I suspect your tech knew just enough of the law to benefit him in some sort of kickback scheme with the salvage yard.

And a lot of newer auto "techs" don't know how to tune a vehicle with a carburetor and points ignition.

253 The past few years, sometimes shopping at the discount brand of major grocery stores - or even at their main brand - I have been stunned at how inexpensively, and well, one can eat. With just medium diligence as to sales, and some effort at cooking.

We sometimes, for fun, roughly calculate the cost of some of the outstanding meals we make at home (esp. when the main items were bought at low sale prices). It's ridiculous. One reason I eat out about 1/5 as often as I did 20 years ago (one reason).

One of these stores, and nearby a Mexican-owned chain (Northgate), are in a sub-prime area. Not scary, just not "nice". The quality and prices of food at these places is amazing.

264 The story of the lady who adopted a kid who killed her? Yeah. She was right, but you can bet nobody took her seriously.

The issue with seriously maladjusted kids is that no psychiatrist is willing to take on that liability. There are, indeed, children who are simply hard wired to be psychopathic, or sociopathic, or whatever term we use currently, but nobody is willing to say so. They say these kids have "conduct disorder" or "oppositional defiant disorder." Both of which are code for "we can't do a damned thing to help this kid, he's ruined from the git-go, and should be locked up, but we won't do that because we might get sued, so you deal with him until you can kick him out of your life and onto the street, where he will end up on jail or dead."

Then it turns much warmer and the rain goes away. Then I get the pleasure of dragging the hose around the yard to water them. And it doesn't matter what hose I get or what I do for it, it kinks every time I move it. Just out of sight from where I'm watering.

Could be, because young people are completely immersed in that inclusivity crap. However, young people are also extremely gung-ho on the man with the balloon comb. We'll see how it shakes out. The young people may go for "gay," but that's all Buttguy is running on and it won't be enough going up against Trump.

It is very hard to take seriously the efforts of the Russia Russia Russians when they could only muster around $100k in Facetwit ads and ran over half of the ads after the election. Even if you would have followed or searched for content that was about the election you would have had less than a 0.004% chance of seeing the ad. The ads ran after the election were I think we just to tweak HRC supporters and the pundits that got EVERYTHING wrong.
