Ronald Reagan Was Correct: "No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear"

Reining (reigning?) in the power of the Justice Department would be job #1 in a Dildo administration. Well, maybe 1A. Job #1 would be putting a time limit on those stupid video challenges in baseball.

Anyway, Americans should have some expectation that court cases will not continue forever. Or, for that matter, any government interference in commerce or the legitimate exercise of our freedoms. Yes, I'm referring to the ridiculous Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Standard Oil Case, 100 Years On

I was stunned earlier this week to read in the Wall Street Journal that the famous antitrust lawsuit against Standard Oil that broke up John D. Rockefeller’s massive creation and decided at the Supreme Court in 1911 was still an open case at the Justice Department a century later, and is only now being closed up at long last:

The Justice Department wants to bring to an end its breakup of Standard Oil Co., which started in 1911, along with its efforts to ensure competition in the markets for horseshoes and player-piano rolls.

After a review of old legal agreements, the DOJ on Tuesday asked the U.S. District Court in St. Louis to terminate the decree that was the ultimate outcome of its case championed by President Theodore Roosevelt against the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. . .

“To say it’s been overtaken by events,” said Daniel Yergin, who wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning oil-industry history, “is a vast understatement.”

And it gets better! Shockingly, there seems to be little evidence that Standard Oil was actually guilty of the monopolistic practices that were used as evidence to break it up!

I know...I know...the government never lies. I am as surprised as you are!

Read the whole thing...it's well worth it, if for no other reason to remind one that monopolies are in many ways and cases a figment of the fevered imaginations of the anti-business left.

Casually watched a segment of a Blue Jays game yesterday. Batter hits a foul ball, and the ball goes backwards, the right of and behind the catcher. Batter runs a little circle around behind catcher and ump, and back to plate.

Simply have a rule, that once the ball (or a ball) is returned to the pitcher, the batter has to be in position, or it's a called strikeout.

******

Horseshoes are part of my heritage. Family get-togethers included my grand-dad, dad and two uncles playing doubles for seemingly hours on end. Gentlemanly trash talking and cigar chomping featured prominently as well, while dozens of cousins looked on. I may have taken a shoe or two to the noggin, accounting for my sense of humor.

If you've ever heard a horseshoe plop solidly into ringer position without hitting the stake, the scene will be familiar to you.

It would seem that by censoring conservative members, they're being harmed by denying their Constitutional right to free speech, particularly since they're silencing political speech.
Then there's the issue of privacy. Users of their services have no voice and are not represented in their TOS. Funny how the right to privacy allows a woman to kill her child, but that right doesn't somehow apply to personal information despite the Fourth Amendment.

65 I don't know if it's been mentioned, but SpaceX suffered a serious anomaly Saturday afternoon during a test of the Crew Dragon capsule.

This was the same capsule that flew unmanned to the ISS in March. It was being prepared for another test flight which would have fired the abort engines after a launch. If that flight had been successful, there would have been a crewed flight later this summer, the first from American soil since 2011.

In yesterday's ground test, the capsule was destroyed. If a crew had been on board they would have been killed instantly. This is not something you want in a system that's designed to save astronauts' lives in an emergency.

So this is a major setback and it will probably take months to find the cause and redesign components if necessary. There's little chance of a crewed flight this year.

When I played competitively I hated guys who would spend five minutes going through an elaborate ritual, stretching everything, loosening up, rearranging their helmet, their nuts, and everything else while I stood on the rubber, until finally they dug in, looked out at me, and were ready to go. You're all set, everything stretched out, loosened up, and your psyched up ready to go? Good.

At that point, I'd step off the rubber, turn around, take off my glove, and proceed to rub up the ball at considerable length.

Team closest to the stake gets points, if both your shoes are closer than the opponent's, both of your shoes score. Ringers by both teams cancel each other out. Last team to score tosses first (both shoes) on the next turn. Game to 21. If you hit Grandpa on the shin you are banished from the game.

what they should do is cut down the ads by placing them in a box during play, like they do with soccer. by eliminating just one minute between halves of innings you could cut around 20 minutes off a game (2 x 9= 1.

It's really too bad that we don't use elections as term limits. We have that opportunity to expel them all the time, but never seem to want to use it.

Of course, having a lying media arm that actively prevents the voting public from actually knowing about what our elected reps are doing doesn't help either.

When the bridge from San Diego to Coronado was built, the plan was to collect tolls until the bridge, and a trust fund to maintain it, were funded. This happy state arrived, after decades.

But some (I think the Coronado city council) wanted to keep collecting tolls (surprise!!!). The voters had other ideas, and the toll collection stopped. No term limits, no special commissions, no special arrangements, no shadowy evil billionaires pulling imaginary strings. Just citizens taking responsibility for their own situation.

They have never removed the toll booths - one just drives through. Obviously, people in Coronado did not go far enough. Ripping out that infrastructure is obviously something they should do to prevent revanchism.

Sorry, got to respectfully disagree. Every mound is a bit different. Even the same mound on different days is a bit different, owing to the guys who've been pitching from it. To hit your spots consistently you have to release the ball in an area about the size of 50 cent piece (I've read).

To do that, you've got to find your landing spot. There's nothing worse than having another pitcher dig a hole that's about six inches closer to the rubber than your stride, which means that you land on the uphill side, and before you're ready to deliver the ball. That's a great way to uncork a pitch that hits the screen. (Think of getting out of register with steps, so that you land kind of half on and half off the tread.)

That's what the warmup pitches are for. If you realize you have that problem, you can fill in the hole and/or dig one for yourself.

Shifting is a fad. We played the game for a century with only a few guys getting the shift (Ted Williams, I think), and now everybody shifts all over the place for every banjo hitter.

Shifting, like the 100 pitch horseshit, and newfound inability to bunt, constitutes proof positive that baseball guys are stupid sheep.

Posted by: Muldoon at April 21, 2019 01:31 PM (m45I2)

Definitely.

The bunting thing drives me wild. Players are taught to hold the bat at a 45 degree angle, oftentimes with their hands way too far up the bat. Then they lunge spasmodically at the ball like someone just goosed them.

So lessee here. Coaches want pitchers to throw curve balls with "two plane" movement because the hitter has to judge both vertical and horizontal aspects of the trajectory. The same geniuses then teach players to hold the bat at 45 degrees for a bunt. Now doesn't that pretty much have the same effect as two plane movement? The would-be bunter has reduced the operative area of the bat from about a foot (when held parallel to the ground) to about two inches.

As said above, more proof, if any were needed, that baseball guys generally are not very bright.

159 I assume Barr understands that a full investigation of the creation of, oversight of, and behavior of, the Special Counsel office in this matter is as important as any of the FISA abuse or other investigations. The scope memos must be made public. Rosie must justify the appointment of an SC under existing regulations (that will be fun to see).

From all outward appearances (and limited inside info) it's pretty clear Wray was about the last person in the US who should have been made FBI Director at this point in history.

Barr seems surprisingly good - but unfortunately the situation calls for nothing less than a Churchill. If he decides to sweep the likely scandal of the SC's very creation, and behavior, under the rug, it will greatly reduce the value of any other clean-up he manages.

For those of you interested in a recent paper on the legislation about the Sherman Anti Trust act (Senator Sherman was brother to General Sherman and wanted to be president, and couldn't get the nod)

Revenge: John Sherman, Russell Alger and the Origins of the Sherman Act

Public Choice, Vol. 174, No. 3-4, 2018

35 Pages Posted: 19 Mar 2018
Patrick Newman

Florida Southern College

Date Written: December 28, 2017

Abstract

This paper argues that Senator John Sherman of Ohio was motivated to introduce an antitrust bill in late 1889 partly as a way of enacting revenge on his political rival, General and former Governor Russell Alger of Michigan, because Sherman believed that Alger personally had cost him the presidential nomination at the 1888 Republican national convention. When discussing his bill on the Senate floor and elsewhere, Sherman repeatedly brought up Alger's relationship, which in reality was rather tenuous, with the well-known Diamond Match Company. The point of mentioning Alger was to hurt Alger's future political career and his presidential aspirations in 1892. Sherman was able to pursue his revenge motive by combining it with the broader Republican goals of preserving high tariffs and attacking the trusts. As a result, this paper reinforces previous public choice literature arguing that the 1890 Sherman Act was not passed in the public interest, but instead advanced private interests.

(By the way, the fight by the Democrats against high tariffs in the late 1800's led to the introduction of the income tax as a way to kneecap the protectionist tariffs placed by the Republicans at the time.)

It is odd that the Mueller probe officially opened to investigate Russian interference in the election, then moved to Team Trump collusion with Russia, then moved to specifically named individuals, and then moved onto PDT personally obstructing justice... all the while suggesting a ever broadening scope when in reality it was narrowed to officially channel Mueller from even glancing at origen of the story and keeping him away from the Obama and Hillary camps as they became publicly exposed.

To recap, Islamic terrorists attacked churches and hotels on Easter Sunday, killing 207. A bombing at the airport was thwarted. Unlike here, an actual backlash could occur, and the government is reportedly restricting access to social media and curfewing reporters.

Saw a Reuter's "report," basically a jumble of gibberish, that pinned the blame on radical Buddhists, somehow. Had to go elsewhere. One of the UK papers carefully avoided that part in their reporting. Jihad Watch already had several reports showing who did it.

Heard some guy on npr a couple years ago claim that the violence in Sri Lanka is not Islamic but "separatist."
He also claimed that most violence across the world is also "separatist" violence and not Islamic in nature.
