The New Futurism [KT]

cityrises.jpg

The City Rises (1935)

Happy Easter Saturday! Today, as we remember not to trust too much in the Arm of Flesh, perhaps we should also consider not trusting too much in the inventions of the Arm of Flesh.

Last week we discussed surrealism. This artistic and philosophical movement got going between the World Wars. Futurism, as art, started before World War I, extending from 1909 to 1944. Note on representative pieces at the link.

From the Tate Museum:

Futurism was launched by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909. On 20 February he published his Manifesto of Futurism on the front page of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro.

Among modernist movements futurism was exceptionally vehement in its denunciation of the past. This was because in Italy the weight of past culture was felt as particularly oppressive. In the Manifesto, Marinetti asserted that 'we will free Italy from her innumerable museums which cover her like countless cemeteries'. What the futurists proposed instead was an art that celebrated the modern world of industry and technology:

We declare...a new beauty, the beauty of speed. A racing motor car...is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace. (A celebrated ancient Greek sculpture in the Louvre museum in Paris.)

Sort of reminds me of the architecture historian who thinks the fire at Notre Dame was liberating because the building was overburdened with meaning. Along with the librarian who wants to eliminate book collections because they, you know, help explain culture.

Wired called the Italian futurists "techno-utopians". Maybe there are some of those today, too.

Today, when we talk about futurism, we're not usually talking about sculpture, painting, or poetry. Futurists today are scenario builders, people with advanced degrees in strategic foresight, science fiction writers, consultants to businesses. . .

And today's Futurists almost never link their work to the existence of Marinetti, and the Italian movement that came before them. This is in part because Marinetti was an artist, and the Italian Futurists worked in paint and bronze and clay, rather than future forecasts. And there is no direct link between Marinetti's group and the strategic foresight consultants working today. But the link is also one that today's futurists would prefer to avoid in part because of another element of the artists behind the Futurist Manifesto of 1909: Marinetti and his cohort embraced and championed fascism.

There are some lefty positions in the next section of the article. I think it is seriously off-base about James Damore, for example. But still, this may be something to think about:

Today's technologists love to eschew history for the same reason the Italian Futurists did, but if they ignore the lessons contained in that movement, they're bound to repeat it. And I'll leave it to you to guess who said this, Marinetti or Musk: "Standing on the world's summit we launch once again our insolent challenge to the Stars!"

Futurism.com has top billing today for a piece in which a professor declares that total surveillance is the only way to save humanity.

Keep an eye on these folks.

Meanwhile, is this the future of tech/entertainment?

Since PBS couldn't handle a hot property like Sesame Street and it has gone over to HBO, we now have "crossover". Onward to the future! I think some Facebook scolds may find something familiar in this clip:

Hope you have a great weekend, with at least a little time in the non-tech world. Have a wonderful Easter.

Meh.

Two things are at play here:

1) If non-politician Trump can do it, so can I!

Well, no. Trump was a hard-nosed businessman working for years under a corrupt Democrat regime and, for the most part, winning.

He knew exactly who they are.

Plus, he spent years building his brand among media types. He knows exactly who and what they are as well.

So, Trump already had the leadership skills honed for decades and the skills to work the media and make himself liked.

He wasn't some clown who rode in on nothing more than kissing the right asses to get Big Leftard Money to back him. (See AOC, Kameltoe, Bernie, etc)

2) The Bill Clinton Factor:

Clinton jumped in the race against GHW Bush when no one else would because Bush poll-wise looked like a lock.

This corrupt little governor from a corrupt little state who gave lousy speeches, got the Obama treatment from the MSM before there was an Obama and won.

At this point in the game, anyone anyone can play for minimal expense and time.

Why not roll the dice?

These people are not that smart. They always do the same things others did before.

Sidenote: Truthteller is an incredibly lame-ass nick. and labels you as a humorless, hatchet-headed troll with no ability to consider any other viewpoints.

That SS/HBO video makes a point: those who denigrate and criticize Western Civilization and its ultimate triumph, the USA, need to listen, learn and begin to respect those ideas and how they became the greatest country in history.
Ideas like freedom of speech and action. Personal responsibility. Principles of right and wrong. Honesty. Mercy. Treating others as you would want them to treat you. Equality before the law, and making sure the laws make sense. The benefits of the traditional nuclear family that consists of a mother and a father. And the strength to recognize those who would destroy that which is good and to stand up to them and say, emphatically, "No. You will not be allowed to destroy goodness."

Happy Easter, everyone. He is Risen! Let us rejoice!

I'm sure people smarter than me have studied this, but it seems to be every possible art form goes through cycles, where genuine art is produced, and then the copycats create similar things that are essentially commodities, bought and sold for profit, and then some fascist or other type of authoritarian monster gets hold of an artistic "movement" and uses the medium to push their agenda.

Which seems to be where we are, with much of our "art" these days. Paintings, architecture, music, movies... to a lesser extent, literature... but I think some of these media, particularly the ones that can be produced and sold now without a central force, like music and literature, still have aspects that are true art, while the mass produced stuff is almost all crap.

One of the tragedies of Notre Dame's burning, is that we aren't a culture that can produce anything that beautiful anymore. Not on that scale, at least.

47 New candidates climb into the clown car. From the Bee:

ACME LABS-Two genetically enhanced laboratory mice, Pinky and the Brain, announced Friday their 2020 presidential run.

The mice have been engineered to think and speak, though the experimentation seems to have given at least one of the mice totalitarian tendencies.

"Humanity, bow before your new master as we ascend into the glorious era of the rule of Brain!" Brain said in his announcement speech before pressing a button on a device that he reportedly designed to control the minds of anyone in the vicinity.

"Narf!" said Pinky to applause from the masses.

The two are running on the platform of "trying to take over the world." While many have criticized this approach, others have praised Pinky and the Brain's honesty, pointing out that "at least they're being transparent about it," unlike other candidates who pretend to be running for the good of the nation. Some have also suggested that Pinky and the Brain will likely adjust well to Washington, D.C., being vermin.

Brut. By Faberge.

> I can see where Marinetti was coming from. He felt weighed down by all the ancient history around him, and the new world of machines and electricity was exhilarating.

Yup. Nothing at all wrong with doing new stuff. The mistake lies in scrapping all the old stuff just because it's old.

Automatically refusing to consider anything new and automatically rejecting anything old are equally stupid positions that are better suited to a bot than a thinking human being.

My favorite Futurist painting is "Dynamism of Dog on a Leash" by Giacomo Balla. That painting explored a genuinely new way of looking at things that was only made possible by using the knowledge gleaned from the latest technology.

Indeed. Muybridge was the pioneer in chronophotography, and demonstrated that (some, not all) artists had been getting galloping horses wrong for centuries.

The Wikipedia article compares Balla's painting with "Nude Descending a Staircase" by Marcel Duchamp, which is appropriate. The difference between the two is that Balla could actually paint.

I tend to look at everything everyone does through the duel lens: What does it cost me? What does it pay?

I don't expect it matters much what it is, but "running for President" tends to pay off well for lots of folks, in lots of ways that have nothing to do with actually, you know, being President.

And if you've already publicly announced you sodomize (and/or are sodomized by) men on a regular basis, there's not a whole lot you have to worry about, in terms of it costing you in the eyes of the public.

Posted by: Ignoramus at April 20, 2019 12:13 PM (1UZdv)

Probably true.

I look at the various non-of color and/or of funky sectual persuasion folks "running" for President, and assume they know they're not going to be nominated.

So with Biden, yeah, I think he's probably quite bitter about being told to "cease and desist" with his run in '16. After he announced his dying son's last wish was that he run, he announced "but yeah, I'm not running."

That wasn't his decision.

So today, he's making a grudge run. But he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the nom.

All kidding aside, Biden is supposed to appeal to "mid-western, blue-collar types", the kind who voted for Trump in '16. Okay, but isn't jobs and the economy the most important issue to this group?

She said, "ok, if you take yours off too"

102 there is some balance between (real) progress and respect for our historical roots and heritage. Just this morning an old friend on FB had an article about letting the soil rest (go fallow) every fourth year, and how (basically claiming) BigOil pushed all their chemicals on us after WW2 to change that "solid practice".

A little search showed me Israel has confronted that question, since the Old Testament says to basically do that every 7th year (so they allowed renting on those 7th years, which the more Orthodox claimed was just tricking God).

imo, there are better ways to keep the soil healthy, and not grow a crop of weeds and their seeds every fourth year, BUT the other side of that, do we want ever larger farms run by fewer families, if that is more efficient? Or maybe no family owners at all, just billionaires turning those manipulated paper profits in ownership of the land itself, with serfs doing all the work. (imported serfs, since the natives might be too uppity and deplorable)

Instead of 400 acre farms, there are many operations of 5000 or much more, and growing (with outside money?). At what point do we stop the centralization of everything, with deliberate laws or tax "incentives"? Anti-trust law might intervene to some degree, but individual liberty and community are not on the same path as globalism and its shadow planners (like CFR or the Soros BigFoundation types).

censoring WrongThink, and fascism walked right through the door labeled

Those central

protected elite "investor" barely participated in the work, only in the
profits. (socialized risk, privatized profit) Laws and bailouts were

181 I read an historical criticism about Science Fiction and Futurism, by someone well known (but damned if I can remember who) which pointed out the SF was only part of a fairly big movement in Futurism, but that it is odd that the only outcome was some niche art, and a corpus of increasingly imaginative and well written stories. It was given expression in cheap magazines that competed with detective stories and airplane stories and so on, and for some reason won out.

He likened it to a world where Stalinism had come and gone, and only left a school of art that focused on images of workers and tractors.

Now, Italian design is amazingly fantastic. I wonder if the idea of futurism influenced Italian thinking, or if it were the other way around with a pre-conceived attitude of design finding a genre to express itself.

I have no idea how simple flowing lines can be so sexy in Italian design, and seem so passive in French design.

267 Only a cursory glance, but 9th's rejection of federal lawsuit on CA's idiotic "sanctuary" laws might be not totally unreasonable, as I feared from the start. Compelling states to do things can still be difficult under the vestiges of federalism that remain. Of course the ruling on the AZ law a few years back looks even more ridiculous in this light, but hey it's about legislating and ruling, not judging. But Sessions was a disaster in more ways than 10.

Otherwise though the judiciary is on an unopposed rampage in usurping all kinds of authority related to immigration. Thus the disastrous border situation - under Trump.

But as far as we know, the idea of repudiation hasn't crossed anyone's mind in the WH, and Trump to date still has never mentioned the GOP in his tirades about congressional failure to fix the situation. So the central policy priority of this presidency looks worse and worse, even though the boss is serious and has just about perfect instincts and objectives.

304 Last night I posted an mini-rant about the new Brave browser on the ONT. I also copied it and emailed it to the Brave business development e-mail address. Inside of an hour or so, I had a return e-mail from Brendan Eich himself. He explained that the issue of having the tab bar on the very top of the screen is inherent in the Chromium engine that they are using, and cannot readily be changed, and more less let on that it is unpopular with Brave users.

Evidently the older Muon-based version of Brave had about run its course. It was getting buggy with too many Web sites, hence the need for the change.

And on my complaint about the "new tab" bringing up a Brave page wherein it backslaps itself for all the ads it has blocked, he said, correctly, that under the old system that I had probably set "about:blank" as my home page, and new tabs opened to that, and that they are indeed working on restoring that functionality.

Anyway, I was very impressed by the prompt response from no less than the head honcho, at a late hour of the night, so I must give the guy his due. I have managed to sort out dome of the issues I had last night. Mostly, it's just so darned different.

I will continue to use Brave, because it seems to be the best of the pack as far as blocking ads and trackers. And I will be hitting their tip jar, too.

Well, they voted for a milquetoast, gay, preppy black dude.

Twice.

311 If that was Brendan Eich, I'd be even more than "impressed". That, right there, is Customer Service with honesty and alacrity.

I don't use it and I'm really freaking impressed.

Well, either it was him, or else some employee/team member sufficiently well-trusted to be allowed to sign his name in an e-mail reply to some rando (me) at 0200. Either way, I am impressed with the service.

And therein lies the difference. And Obama keeps it on the down-low. Bootygig is in your face about it.

If the Dems do not pass impeachment charges under these circumstances and the mountain of evidence described in the report, they deserve to be labeled as "gutless," "weak," "pathetic," and any other similar descriptive word the GOP can come up with. It is time to grow a spine.

There are both lefties and "normals" among the yellow vests. I have seen media reports blaming some of the recent church vandalism on leftist yellow vests.

from what I understand drivers in France have to wear the Yellow Jackets & can't remember the official reason

316 I can see Leftists or possibly Antifa insignia on some people at these protests. But for the most part in other weeks of the procession to the protest it's 30 - 50 year olds mostly.

Car drivers in France are obligated by law to carry yellow vests in their car, to have to wear in the event that their cars breaks down on the side of the road. They are supposed to wear the yellow "visibility vest" to avoid being hit by traffic. In and of itself, no big deal. Sensible, even. But car owners have been the whipping boy of the elite in France for a long time: fuel taxes, registration taxes, reduced speed limits, photo radar everywhere, and huge fines for speed violations.

Case of the straw that broke the camel's back. And the yellow vests are a convenient symbol.

That compacted Shit-Mattress is a psychopath.
I think it was publius who first brought the idea to my attention and the more I think about it, the more momentum that diagnosis gathers.

321 "Well, they voted for a milquetoast, gay, preppy black dude. Twice. "

Put another way, the GOP candidates found a way to lose to him. It was almost impossible, but they did it.
