Gun Thread: Reloading 101 Pt. 3: Easter Edition - Working with Powder [Weasel]

Hair-Hare-In-Scope-Optics scaled.jpg
There's a Hare in my Scope!

Happy Easter, everyone! I hope you've bitten the heads off of your chocolate bunnies and found all of the eggs hidden in your back yard. Remember, if you're good, the Easter Bunny will leave a quarter under your pillow tonight. Or is that the Tooth Fairy? Either way, let's pick up where we left off with reloading and other fun gun stuff last week, shall we?

For those who need to catch up, we've been discussing reloading and spreading the material over a few weeks. Here are links to Part 1 and Part 2 where we review essential gear and begin setting it up.

As a reminder, please do not list specific load powder charge weights when discussing reloading, and please remember this material is intended for the novice reloader, so let's keep the information basic for now. Thanks.

Moving right along in our reloading series, it's time to unbox the powder dispenser and scale, and this isn't a particularly difficult procedure. So open the boxes, and take out the powder dispenser and scale, and put them on your bench. The End. Seriously, a few words on the gear; you recall from the shopping list I recommended investing in a better than average powder dispenser and scale, and the reason is simple. While you can reload with satisfactory results using much less expensive equipment, using it can be tedious and frustrating. You want to make the reloading process as smooth and uncomplicated as possible, and a goofy powder dispenser is a pain in the ass to use. And it doesn't get better the longer you sit at the bench fighting with it. Same with scales. Nothing will make you less confident in your work than a powder scale that seems to be wandering all over the place, so if at all possible, this isn't the place to economize.

Powder Dispenser
These all work about the same way with the difference mostly being in the quality of the components. A micrometer of some sort is moved in and out creating a volumetrically variable chamber which fills with powder from a larger hopper above each time the lever is cycled. The setup really only involves putting the parts together and practicing a bit to develop a technique for operating the dispenser the very same way each time and using as close as possible to the same speed and pressure on the lever as you dispense a charge. At the beginning of a reloading session I always run through several test charges, measuring each until I am getting acceptably consistent results. It's also helpful to keep the main powder chamber at least approximately half full. I've found the charges begin to vary as the powder level gets close to running out. Finally, it's not a good idea to store powder in the dispenser between reloading sessions. I dump any unused powder back into the original container when I'm done for the day.

One note: For some powder dispensers, the micrometer size varies depending on whether it's designed for loading handgun loads where smaller charge weights are used, or rifle loads where larger charge weights are needed. Be sure to look at the range of performance for your particular dispenser to make sure it's appropriate for your intended use.

Scales
Powder scales come in all shapes, sizes and prices. You can spend a lot of money on a scale. I have small inexpensive digital jeweler's scales which honestly aren't too bad for a quick check, and very elaborate and expensive laboratory balances which can be fussy and subject to electromagnetic interference from household wiring and flourescent lighting fixtures. What I use is an old fashioned beam scale and I have collected a few from various manufacturers. There are all sorts of integrated dispensers and scale combinations which many people like, but what I use to produce my match ammunition is a plain old reloading beam scale. A couple of tips; calibrate your scales before each reloading session using a check weight, and I find it very helpful to add about a pound of stick-on lead wheel weights to the underside of the scale body when first setting it up. This helps dampen tiny vibrations and keep the scale from skittering all over the place on the bench as you work.

Next week we'll talk about choosing components!

Last week lin-duh sent in an excellent instructional video, and I thought I'd include it here again for those that may have missed it.

Did anyone have a chance to watch this and what do you think?

***

Prolific Gun Thread contributor ibguy sends us this link for a neat-o hanging target frame. All you have to add is some 1' diameter electrical conduit and you're ready to shoot. In fact it's so neat-o that I ordered one my own self to use at the farm and it was delivered USPS in just a few days. I'll try to remember to include a review later this spring once I've used it. Thanks ibguy!

I have a bunch of different target frame setups of similar design. What do you use? Something you purchased or did you engineer one yourself?

***

Range Time With a Purpose
The folks at Shooting Illustrated have some suggestions for making practical use of your range time.

When you go to the range, do you have a particular training objective in mind, or do you just plug away at paper trying to make a small group of holes?

I've done three AR's in 6.5 Grendel. A 16" carbine and 20" rifle for me and a 18" rifle for grandson. Seems to be a good caliber and the AR is a perfect platform for it.

11 225 875 churches vandalized in one year in France. Hundreds murdered on Easter at churches in Sri Lanka. Years of persecution of Christians in Iraq and Syria. How long can people pretend this isn't a global anti-Christian pogrom?

*lugs this over from the other thread*

This is really starting to feel like one of those "gradually, then suddenly" scenarios.

Mainstream "news" outlets were pretty mum on whodunnit.

And scant mention of scores of Christian churches in Africa burnt, the parishioners murdered.

Gradually...
then suddenly.

15 Apologize for the length, but I had to tell this story:

Ever try to ship a firearm? I mean, as an individual to a manufacturer
(in my case) or an FFL? Should be doable, right? beware though, there
are some double secret prohibitions that you should know.
First, I
started out doing a search on the UPS and Fedex websites. I rejected
USPS out of hand, because USPS. Apparently USPS can ship them as well,
but I mean, if you're that much of an optimist, well, you're probably
not a regular reader of AOS.
The UPS website isn't half bad, but
deceptive because it's not complete. First, you can't just take it to a
UPS Store. They are a franchise and they don't do it. I made that
mistake and ran into a couple of hipsters and hipster managers that just
said, no, UPS doesn't ship firearms. I said, yes they do, and the
conversation degenerated from there. Turns out, you have to take it to a
UPS customer service center. Luckily, there are several in most major
metro areas. But, second mistake was calling them first and trying to
find out about packaging. They can't tell you on the phone, or rather,
the chick in Taiwan who answered their phone can't tell you. She also
can't give out the phone number for the customer service center - secret
info that. So, I found out the hard way that you have to leave it open
enough for their agent at the center to look inside. Mine was a long gun
that I had carefully wrapped, in it's case, and that had to be opened
to give the agent a look see. But besides that, UPS was pretty good.
When
I was rejected by the hipsters at the UPS store, I also looked at
Fedex. Their website has no info on shipping firearms. If you search
their site for "ship firearm", you get several references to shipping
"dangerous goods", but if you go to them, yep, they never mention
firearms. Then ok, so I called them too, and their chick in the
Dominican Republic only knew that I had to take it into one of the Fedex
shipping centers too, and there is only one in the metro area of the
state that I'm in. So Fedex was out.
Funny thing - both the hipster
at the UPS store and the dominican republic chick both asked me if the
manufacturer was an ffl holder. I would think that enough firearms are
shipped that the people answering the phones for them might have a
slight amount of training, but no. On second thought, I might not be
surprised if the Feds allowed a company to make guns, but not to sell
them.
So that's my tale of woe - my long gun is out in the ether and
hopefully will arrive safely. Maybe they ship it by canoe. That could be
trouble.

Yeah. On Monday I had some excellent pistol shooting with the S&W Vic. Friday I had some MEH rifle shooting with the RS22.

Although what I count as MEH now would have thrilled me 3 months ago.

Ref shipping firearms.

When my S&W Victory broke, S&W sent me (emailed) a prepaid shipping label. I just stuck in on the package and UPS picked it up at my door the next day.

When it was fixed, UPS dropped it off. You don't have a gun that was already in your possession shipped to an FFL. That's for when you first get it from the dealer - the FFL has transfer paperwork to fill out. There's not transfer when you get a gun fixed

33 Well, I'm back!

Did mass, had a nice feast with the family, took a nap and then a walk in this wonderful sunny warm weather.

Yesterday I was at the Novi gun show (Michiganders know what I'm talking about) and as usual non-firearm purchases predominated.

I got some delicious spicy cheese, barbecue sauce and a German military surplus hat that replicates one I had in the 80s with ear flaps and a visor. I literally wore the thing to pieces over 20 years and have been craving a replacement.

Can hardly wait for winter to wear the thing. Youngest Daughter got a Russian furry hat and Middle Daughter picked up a German surplus field jacket.

I did buy 500 rounds of cheap pistol ammo, causing one of my friends (who met me there) to ask how long it would last.

"That's like a year's supply for me. How long will it last you?"

I paused to think about. "Maybe a month. Maybe less." The vendor laughed.

36 Nice thread Weasel, as usual!

When I go to the range, I usually work on the basics first when zeroing my rifles. Then I work on follow up shots, practice reloads and what not, usually out to 100 yards.

At longer ranges, 300 to 600 yards, I work on how a particular rifle sights in and any hold off or hold overs I need for a particular distance using iron sights or scopes.

Collecting surplus, I shoot everything from 1917 Lee Enfields, 1903 Springfields, etc. to modern AK's and AR's so it is fun and challenging as well as a walk thru history.

When I go to the pistol range, I tend to work on basics as well as seeing what a particular pistol or revolver can and cannot do. From old Cz-27's to modern 1911's, it is always fun and a challenge to get them running right and on target.

I recently found a nice 1908 Colt Hammerless in .380 that may need to be liberated from a dusty old pawn shop in my AO. Poor thing just sits there.....

40 Ever try to ship a firearm? I mean, as an individual to a manufacturer (in my case) or an FFL? Should be doable, right?

I've shipped both to a manufacturer (Ruger, FWIW) and to a C&R FFL. Ruger was easy because they sent a box with all the proper labels. For the C&R, I did what you did and found the regs on the USPS website and printed them out. I also stopped in the day before and told them that I would be bringing in a rifle to mail. The clerk had me talk to the postmaster who was totally cooperative. He told me to bring the box unsealed and ask for him personally. When I came back I brought a copy of the receiver's FFL. He looked at that, looked in the box, taped it up and everything was good to go. Honestly less hassle than I was expecting.

Went to the range last week and tried trap for the first time. Shoulder recovering, new recoil pad installed and a cheap vest with a pad ordered. Completely different than a day at the rifle range. Those clays are quick. You have all of a second to see, track, point more than really aim, and fire.

57 The creedmore will require the AR10 platform instead of the AR15. Cartridge dimensions and pressure push it up. This, or something similar, is what the AR should have been to begin with.

Pope Benedict was ahead of his time and worried about bringing people along to fast. He was also hampered by the fact that no Western leader had the guts to stand beside him. Even Dubya kept swearing that Islam = peace.

If you get a chance, read his 6,000 word discourse on the sex abuse scandal.

61 I use a Lyman powder measure I bought some 30 years ago, heavy cast iron body and a 2-stage micrometer slide. The plastic powder tube is darkened from mucho powder having gone through it, but this powder measure is pretty much indestructible -- it should out-live me.

I use a Lyman balance beam I bought with the powder measure. Good tip about adding lead weights, I hadn't thought of that. I check every 10th powder throw. I never go for maximum loads, so I stay away from the danger zone on the load lists.

62 When it was fixed, UPS dropped it off. You don't have a gun that was already in your possession shipped to an FFL. That's for when you first get it from the dealer - the FFL has transfer paperwork to fill out. There's not transfer when you get a gun fixed

Some state -- I don't recall which one but no doubt one of the usual suspects -- was trying to make it so that you had to do a NICS check to get your own gun back from the gunsmith. Don't know if happened or not.

66 I prefer scoops to powder measures if they are calibrated and consistent. Of course, that makes them a one trick pony: a specific amount of a specific powder for a specific load. Very quick and handy once done but limited.

But when working up loads, having the ability to make minute changes in a charge is where the powder measures shine. The alternative is to scoop a charge close to what is wanted and trickle in the remainder. It's slow but doable.

This is why a good scale is so important. Being able to make .1 or .2 grains difference in a load is a helpful ability to have.

Posted by: JTB at April 21, 2019 07:51 PM (bmdz3)

67 I think the military has chosen the creedmore.

6.8 SOCOM, or something very similar, is what what I am hearing. Again for the same reasons. Overall cartridge dimensions and pressure push the creedmore into the larger receiver in the AR10.

Take a 22/250, add a 15 pound barrel, a railroad tie for a stock, and a 20 power scope and you were in business. A lot of those guys used the very simple Lee Loader and the scoop powder measure. During their exceedingly boring shooting session, sometimes 10 shots in two hours, they would reload the same case over and over. Striving for the one hole group at 500 yards.

84 It's been a few good weeks collecting .32's.
I've squandered my capital on:

A 1913 Colt (Model 1903).
It's one of the last few thousand made in high-polish blue.
It's a blue-black mirror, like only Colt could do.

A late minty 1941 Colt (Model 1903).
It's in an un-numbered and unlabeled Colt box,
with no instruction manual or interior label.
As such, I'm pretty sure it's one of the Royal Netherlands Indies Ordnance Commission.
The order got marooned in New York after Dec. 11.
A Colt letter will (I hope) prove I'm right and that
it's a "Dutch Colt".

A Sauer 1913, marked '1920' and P.w. B.
A pre-WWI Bavarian Police .32, allowed to be
retained after the Armistice.

I've located a Berlin Police "K.P.P.B." marked FN1900,
a truly rare bird, with the safety markings in German (not French, as usual).
Calling the shop in the morning... they want less than $400 for it. that's foolishly low.
And I've been hunting a Berlin Police 1900 for a long time.

100 Something isn't making sense to me.
There is talk of scales.
There is talk of powder dispensers that measure the load.
Why both unless you're using the scales to confirm your dispenser is on target?
Personally, I will probably just weigh each load and use a funnel to go from the scales to the casing. I'm sure a dispenser speeds things up but, what's the rush?

I have most of what I need but not there yet. Still don't have calipers, a good trimmer, cleaner for the brassvod a good scale.

Do have Lee 50th anniversary reloading kit, a set of Lee dies for the rifle, couple thousand primers ( Winchester large rifle WLR ) and a lb of IMR 4831 that was recommended.
Oh, and 100 Nosler/Winchester 140gr ballistic silvertips.
If any of those sound wrong for my 7mm mag, please sound off.

102 Last week I mentioned helping a friend get started in reloading and thought the Lee Hand Press (nutcracker style) would be useful. Then I realized I handed used one from spent brass to finished round for years. Before offering my opinion, I should check it again making 38 WCs.

I used spent 38 special cases and the usual three die Lee carbide set. Didn't lube the first few cases. not really needed for straight wall pistol cases. Then tried the rest using Lee resizing lube. (That's a topic for another thread but the stuff works really well.)The lube made a significant improvement in how easily the sizing went. The ram prime that comes with the Hand Press kit worked VERY well, much better and faster and more positive than expected. I held the cases in a tray to charge them with a scoop I use for that cartridge all the time. The bullet seating and crimping die was already set for WCs. It went faster and was more fun than I anticipated.

Even a small mounted single stage press can do the same. But for those with a lack of space or funds the Hand Press kit can do it all.

Yeah, it's been an unusually slow GT so we could use a little pot stirring. A 6.5 CM is on my lust list (as is a 6.5 Grendel) but if I can't have both, I'll have the .308. NATO standard, huge availability advantage both for components and factory loads, suitable for all but the most extreme applications that the 6.5 is. Maybe (just pulling ideas out of my nethers now) better barrel life, maybe heavier bullets for larger game?

143 Are you using the powder measure to the scale and then adding by speck until scale says "right there?"

I've done a lot of lab work where I'd use a spatula to weigh various things out to as far as 0.0001 grams. Spatulas were curved and you could hold them in your hand and tap the side with your index finger to add tiny amounts.

Also wondering about starting powder load to work with. Why don't they tell you what is in factory loads on the box?

I use a powder measure to "dump" most of the load I want, then with the pan on a beam scale, use a powder trickler to make it exact.

For really accurate handloads, every barrel is different. Part of the science is tuning a load for your particular rifle.

146 Range time is best time. At least for me. If I could swing it, I'd shoot every day.

Ah well. Wall o'text range report follows.

After putting 1k rounds through the SIG P320 with somewhat mixed results, I thought I'd put 1k of the same ammo through my boo, the XD9 to compare how well I shot without a red dot on a platform I know well.

I also mixed in some .22 practice with the SIG P250-22, using CCI MiniMags. Fired 200 rounds of Mini-Mags and 200 rounds of Fiocci 115gr FMJ ammo.

For ergonomics, the XD hits the sweet spot for me. It just fits me. That doesn't mean I can't fuck up a wet dream, because I can and will.

Once again, I shot fairly consistently low-left, making a 2"x2" 'beaten area' on the 10 zone border. There were the usual flyers and flinches but most of the 200 rounds went there.

Also, I got some 'XD finger' from pulling with the base of my finger instead of my full pad. So by the end of the 200 rounds, my index finger was sore, but happy.

So far, I think the SIG P320 was actually easier to shoot, all except the damn heat transfer problem. By the way, the XD9 also has a take down lever but it did NOT transfer heat from the barrel the way the SIG does. Honestly, I thought I'd be MUCH better with the XD9, instead...it's a wash or the victory goes to the SIG. More next week after another 200 rounds and after I pay more attention to my trigger finger placement.

Oh and the SIG P250-22 was shooting low (dot covering target instead of bisecting it or 6") but the groups were smaller despite a truly horrible, heavy trigger.

No malfunctions on either gun, but had to pull the trigger twice on one .22 round. It's rimfire, so not the guns's fault, I suspect.

148 Why don't they tell you what is in factory loads on the box?

Because they aren't using off the shelf powers. They are using powders developed specifically for commercial loading methods. Also, I can imagine a liability issue if somebody were to take that info and do something, uh, not smart with it. Same reason for Weasel's request up top.

153 100 ... "There is talk of scales.
There is talk of powder dispensers that measure the load.
Why both unless you're using the scales to confirm your dispenser is on target?
Personally, I will probably just weigh each load and use a funnel to go from the scales to the casing. I'm sure a dispenser speeds things up but, what's the rush?

Teej,
I think of them as belt and suspenders. The powder measure can ensure a reliable powder charge but should be checked now and then. I would rather have the scale than measure if I had to choose just one, but the combination offers flexibility. Also, taking time for careful measurement for a few rifle cartridges is one thing, loading a few hundred handgun cartridges that way would get old real fast.

156 Ok, let's do a .45 v 9 mm thing. This is as a result of Weasel putting me some knowledge. Again. 6.5 Creedmore v. .308 Win?

Depends on use case.

For CQB the M1A chambered in 7.62/.308. For shooting steel, .308 since the ammo is cheap.

The 6.5CM is better compared to the longer .300 Win Mag in use case. 6.5CM is usually loaded for precision work and in that case .308 just can't compare because it loses so much energy beyond 150 meters and the BC for the 6.5CM is such where cross winds have about 40% less effect than the .308

For war, I want the .308. For hunting game or precision work, the 6.5CM hands down. The .308 is in a weird place now. The .300BLK is better for CQB and the 6.5CM eats away at the benefit at the longer end. So if I were to start over I wouldn't do .308 at all.

If I were to do a Run & Gun and not use the 5.56, the 6.5CM seems to be the go-to.

How and why to carry and what situations to prepare for. (F'rinstance, how far away do you want to be able to hit someone at, what length barrel would that take?).

I had a situation this week where I wasn't carrying and it diffused fast enough but it could have come to that and then what are the consequences to drawing -- brandishing -- and where do you draw lines.

A while back some character was wandering the neighborhood stopping at every window car and home, peaking in. So I went outside with a nickle polished Desert Eagle chambered in .50AE.

Yes, I brandished at very close range, and quietly said "This is not a safe neighborhood."

There was urine running down both pant legs. Never saw the visitor again.

I'm talking about stuff for a "truck gun" type bolt-action build. Not for precision rifle stuff.

3 MOA potential would be fine, with a maximum "expected mission" brief of about 200 yards.

To be honest, I've never really shot a lot. Make sure scopes are still on before hunting season, that's 3 rounds each through the 7mm and 10/22, because they're always still on and a case of blue rock with a couple of buds before bird season as a tune up.

I only shoot at "locks" while hunting, well, okay, I'm generally about 3 outta five on doves but other than that...

Main reason for wanting to reload is in case the unthinkable happens.

176 For measuring powder, I started with the Lee discs for their progressive loaders that have incrementally larger voids to meter out powder.

And I was happy.

For rifle I used scoops. And was happy with that too.

Then I went upscale and got a powered measure that trickled out powder to a receptacle on a beam. I hated it because it took an eternity for the balance to settle, and the hassle of transferring the powder to the case and repositioning the container tested my patience.

So I got a couple different other meters and finally settled on the digital RCBS Chargemaster 1500.

It takes time, but the sound of the motors, the trickle and the distinctive beep when ready are now an integral part of loading anything more than pistol.

I'm familiar with that, need to memorize my state. But I mean more the practical stuff like which contingencies do you prep for and why and how.

He recommends a high-intensity flashlight, one about the size of the Harbor Freight $1.99 (but free! with coupon) red or blue flashlight, but with 500+ lumens.

He demonstrates (maybe convincingly) carrying it (it's bright, enough to trash the night vision of several fools), then putting it on his keychain shortly before being searched. This might work, as the thing really does look innocent enough.

Shining a flashlight in someone's eyes (or 3+ someomes), just as they start getting close, seems easy enough. Then execute Plan B. Eau d'Pepper Spray seems called-for, with an incoming order of .380 Auto or better, as an after-thought.

184 In response to Bandersnatch.

Much of what you inquire of is legalities. Your local CCW instructors will be the "go to" source for what's what in your jurisdiction.

As for the rest? I'm echoing the others, but in a much more direct form.

If you're going to carry with serious intent, first, find your inner sociopath, get on speaking terms with the bastard, and keep 'im under VERY tight rein.

You've got to have a bit of that "available" to remain cool, calm and focused, when those traits are everything to your survival.

But then, you've also got to learn to "compartmentalize" to the maximum degree possible.

What happens in or during a shoot, does not and can not define "you". That compartmentalization is what allows you to deal with it and treat it as a unique aspect to "you", and your life as a whole.

I concur with the previous commenters. Best not to carry if one cannot bear the weight of one's actions.

Never carry something that will just piss someone off.

A light and pepper spray are tools supporting firearms. They MIGHT deter someone but it also can flip their switch and both are pretty useless against someone really flipped out on chemicals.

Can't improve on what Jim is saying.

But if you want to have a quicker and more thorough conversation with that inner socipath, I strongly recommend budgeting and making good use of joining a boxing club with a high percentage of Mexicans (who don't play by the rules), or getting at least a yellow belt in Krav Maga.

Boxing will make you comfortable with that conversation, and the other sociopaths that you will run across. Krav Maga will get you over the social inhibition that keeps you from beating someone up and breaking their knees.

The side benefits are improved health, unarmed skills and a massive increase of self-confidence and ability to stand your ground.

You will know who you are.

193 116 Powder dispensers are fine until you try to use one with stick-shaped powder. If I'm reloading with a powder such as IMR-4198, I set the dispenser to throw a charge several grains under the desired weight, and then subsequently place the charge on a scale and add the remaining grains using a powder trickler.

Posted by: WVinMN at April 21, 2019 08:29 PM (pV4s0)

That's my experience with stick powders as well. I'm using a Lee powder measure and stick powder loads vary +/- 1 or 2 grains. I set it a couple of grains light and trickle the rest. It does much better with ball powders like Win 748.

A few weeks back, I disassembled a blown-up (figuratively) microwave oven. The magnets around the magnetron are very strong, and largish, perhaps 3" in diameter.

Also, if you have an electric toothbrush, the magnets in the base of the disposable brush are rare-earth, and ought to be saved. Ideal, if a bit strong, for refrigerator door duty. Always have something underneath them, or you will play the dickens getting them off.

.50AE, 10mm, .357 and 300 WinMag I keep in nickle because it looks nice. Cases don't seem to last as long though.

It would be nice to be able to rationalize the more expensive material.

257 A couple of reloading tips :

1) Keep records of everything you do. Date loaded, bullet type and weight, powder type and weight, case type, primer type, seated length, etc. I have a pile of notebooks going back more that 30 years with pretty much everything I've ever loaded.

2) Keep your scale clean. If dust collects in the bearings you will not get accurate and repeatable measurements. I keep mine covered when not in use and blow the bearings out regularly.

I'm very tempted to go over there and see how apeshit they've become over the news of the past couple weeks, but overall have decided I don't have time for their hateful bullshit anymore.

262 190 While I truly appreciate all the other suggestions as to alternate firearm platforms for the "truck gun", my query was directly to barrels for a bolt-action. Centerfire, to be more exact.

The other platforms are highly credible, but my quest has a purpose.

Is the "nickel" actually nickel, or is it some kind of white brass? There are many types of brass, and not all are golden in color.

Pretty sure it's nickle plating on top of brass. After a few reloads the plating starts to wear off and the brass shows through. Probably not thick enough to be strongly attracted to a magnet.

276 try humping a Pig all day... loads of fun, even w/o a ruck.

Just because it looked cool, I went and profaned a Springfield SOCOM II by replacing its stock with a Juggernaut aluminum bullpup frame. The original package was heavy with a questionable trigger, but while the new package certainly reduces the overall size by a considerable amount, it feels like humping a lead block with all kinds of sharp pointy parts to get stabbed with when moving about on sling.

Because I have been told that the AR-15 platform make me an evil person, and I don't want to go to Hell because of the looks of a duty rifle, I will try anything else (M1A), the Desertech MDR and the Tavor X95 just so I don't get tagged with shame.

Bob - Visit their site on a full size 'puter. Also, the owner is very helpful and patient. You can buy all the parts or a complete upper or... As far as Bear Creek, I've one of their ARs from when they were something something else and haven't experienced a problem with it. The Mrs. got her first deer DRT with it. I bought an upper/bolt set in 300 Blackout from them that will be my next project after I "ruststore" my Harley 45

I have too many projects and should just retire. But then I couldn't afford the projects, the Mrs or much of anything

Willowed for sure, but you're talking to the guy who had to hump the traversing unit for a TOW missile system because he was the only one in the unit with a Large ALICE ruck and our idiot commander thought we should take one with us on an Air Assault FTX.

even the 82nd and the Ranger Bats agreed that the TOW wasn't "man-portable". and the Dragon was a joke and a suicide weapon in most scenarios.

hell, even back in the day (80s) each round was ~55# and the launch signature was a dead giveaway, which meant you're immediate AO would be saturated with indirect fire before you could break the bitch down and boogie.
