The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Well, it's only Monday morning and I'm already in a bad mood -- too soon following the peaceful contemplation of the Easter weekend. I had to go and read a stupid tweet (below) by that prissy litte pussy David French at NRO, and now I'm all like this. What a prissy little pussy he is. Oh wait, I already said that, didn't I? Well, it can't be said enough about the guy. He's giving attaboys to *Romney* who has spent the last two years fighting Trump way more vigorously than he ever did against Obama during the 2012 election. Any idiot who would willingly replace Trump with a weasely little half-conservative like him really needs to have his freakin' head examined. But they're all like that: Both Bushes, McCain, Romney, Dole, all of those clowns, they get all whipped up into a hot fury when they fight other Republicans while their battles against Democrats is tepid at best. And prissy little pussy David French is the same. He's certainly been critical of Obama's policies, but against Trump, he just goes off the charts. But Trump is the only one who fights. More importantly, Trump is the only one who fights *for me*. Prissy little pussy David French refuses to understand this. He's wetting his pants because Trump banged a few hotties. Hell, as far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy to arrange to have a continual parade of hotties delivered to the Oval Office if that would help to keep him fighting. Besides, back in the 90s, we had a president that made Donald Trump look like Mike Pence, and we were told that it was only sex, so we should just ignore it. Well, that's what I'm doing. I'm tired of having someone else make the rules and then squeal like a little girl when I follow them. And my nightmare scenario is not Trump grabbing some mish, but rather it's to have some part of the progressive centipede get me in its sights, and I'm helpless, I don't know what I can do, so I look over to my corner for help, and there's French and Romney laughing about which one of them is going to shiv me in the back. Look, I'll be honest. When I voted for Trump back in 2016, I really didn't know what I'd be getting. But not only has he turned out to implementing conservative policies more so than I ever could have hoped for, he's turning out to be a major obstacle to the progressive wrecking machine that has been steamrolling across our cultural and political landscape for the past several decades. But prissy little pussy David French doesn't care. Because he lives in an isolated little bubble in a wealthy zip code in the Acela corridor, so whether Democrats get elected, or Republicans get elected, it's all the same to him. What does he care, really? His life will go on pretty much the same regardless of the results of any election. So, for him, a lost election is about the same as your team not making the playoffs. Boo hoo. But that's not the case with a lot of other Americans, though. Elections have real world consequences. Trump has tried, with varying degrees of success, to make America work again for normal Americans. But all that prissy little pussy David French has done is to try to undermine him. He's basically been siding with the enemy the whole time. So f* French with a flaming napalm-filled football wrapped in det cord. He's worse than useless."

A fair point. Normally, morons who randomly shout out 'Joan Collins!' in the Rant thread get a night in the box, but this time I'll allow it.

45 American car culture is dying.

Long WSJ article on the what's and why's. The number of young persons with DLs is half what it was in 1983. Some of that is because of the increase in ages and graduated licensing. But mainly the kids don't care about driving because they can Uber and get together with friends over the internet. Not mentioned but I am sure this counts, less teens have jobs. Detroit is getting squeezed. They are getting into electric scooters.

New article

Elon Musk who likes to stake out a business in a place so far in the future that there are no competitors, is about to announce that Tesla is going to be leaning forward even further on self-driving vehicles. The driving population is decreasing on the older end as people lose the ability to drive, and on the younger end as people lose the desire.

It remains absolutely shocking to me that despite the perfidy of Congress, the Bushes, the think tanks, and most right wing intellectuals from Goldberg to Shapiro- basically the entire Republican intellectual class- this President is by far the strongest conservative President, and maybe the best President overall, since Lincoln. And Trump doesn't have a massive death toll of Americans against him. The argument of the past two years is that these people are a cancer eating away at American productivity and freedom. More even than the parasites of the Democratic Party, Cancer Republicans must be excised for the good of the host.

105 45 American car culture is dying.

178 Those hot dogs look good, but they are not Chicago-style. A Chicago-style hot dog has sweet relish, yellow mustard, diced onions, cucumber slices, tomato slices or wedges and a dill pickle spear, the whole thing lightly dusted with celery salt. The sport peppers (which are a very specific type of pickled, not terribly hot pepper) are optional. All on a poppy-seed bun. Chicago is also Vienna beef country, so that is the preferred hot dog brand. People who have never had a hot dog this way make fun of it, but it's actually very tasty.

199 178 Those hot dogs look good, but they are not Chicago-style.

As you know, I enjoy a good celebrity Autopsy. I said that the only one they didn't trash was Michael Landon but now there's another contender. The worst they could say about Michael Clarke Duncan was that he exercised too much. His dad was a booze hound but he never had a drink in his life. His girlfriend, maybe fiance, was Omarosa so maybe not the best taste in women. (She was hated by his family and there is even a conspiracy theory that she killed him but, apparently, there's nothing to that.). Dead of a heart attack at 54.

"offenses which proceed from the misconduct of public men, or in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust. They are of a nature which may with peculiar propriety be denominated political, as they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to society itself."

also

"Men in public trust will much oftener act in such a manner as to render them unworthy of being any longer trusted, than in such a manner as to make them obnoxious (subject) to legal punishment."

523 90's music may not be the ballywick of most members of the Horde, but it was a really odd mix of genres and styles that were temporarily popular. You've got the tail end of hair metal and grunge. The decade started with fun-loving rap (Vanilla Ice, later Run-DMC) but also harder stuff like NWA and ended with Tupac and Biggie. You had teeny bopper pop, boy bands, euro dance music (bands like Corona, Real McCoy, Black Box, even Ace of Base technically) and their American counterparts like C+C Music Factory. There was third wave ska, the female singer-songwriter bubble (Fiona Apple, Alanis Morisette, Jewel), the swing revival (Cherry Poppin Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers), and yes, there was the fucking Macarena.

There may be another decade with an odder mix, but not by much.

Many years ago there was an SF story in (I think) Playboy where they'd invented a time machine. The head honcho (government official, rich guy who funded it, whatever...) insists on using it to bring his favorite composer to the present, said composer having died young and drunk from a combination of pneumonia and drunkenness or some shit -- the idea being that they'd cure him and the honcho would get more of the music he loved.

The composer promptly goes out and joins a group that plays "overload" music, becomes addicted to "slice", and winds up dying at exactly the age he did on his original timeline.

There's a fundamental problem with all national polls today, and I don't think it can be solved. Polling assumes a homogenous population, and yet we vote on a state by state basis. They cannot account for regionalism. So say the polls on impeachment are 40/40/20 - but that includes 95% support for impeachment in California and NYC. What does that say about the other 48 states?

My position is that due to the huge regional differences that have developed, the numbers determined by a national poll are useless, even when they're done honestly. And to do them dishonestly, all a pollster has to do is focus on the two coasts and ignore the center, except for Chicago.

549 In other news the battle between Seattle and Eastern Washington State is heating up.

Early last week, it was discovered that Yakima (in Eastern Washington State) was bussing their released convicts into Seattle. Then last Friday, a tanker truck carrying over 40,000 gallons of human waste overturned on Interstate 90. It was heading east over the pass to Eastern Washington.
Begs the question, why was Seattle shipping shit eastward?
No worries though. The crash (creating a huge Friday traffic jam) was on the western slope so the human fertilizer will help keep Seattle remain the Emerald Chitty.

Let them rest for three days, press off the juice, and to each quart add a quarter of a pound of anchovies, two ounces of shallots, and an ounce of ground black pepper.
Boil up together for half an hour, strain through a sieve, and put to it the following spices; a quarter of an ounce of mace, the same of allspice and ginger, half an ounce of nutmeg, a drachm of coriander seed, and half a drachm of cochineal.
Pound all together; let them simmer gently for twenty minutes, and strain through a bag: when cold, bottle it, adding to each bottle a wineglass of brandy. It will keep for seven years.

There were TONS of amazing rock bands, you just gotta find them.

Listen to Built to Spill and then tell me rock was dead in the 90s.

Maybe mostly dead. Especially on commercial radio.
But still.

639

The 90s was a weird time for music - there's a lot to love, and a lot to hate.

The music industry was so flush with cash, that A&R men were willing to take a risk on ANYTHING. It was almost like if you had a band, you got a deal. So there was a lot of really cool stuff, that often gets lost in the sea of crap when you think back to then.

640 Those hot dogs look good, but they are not Chicago-style.

Posted by: HTL at April 22, 2019 11:41 AM

Glad someone said it. Thankfully, here in my area of SE Michigan, I found a Chicago hot dog place. Hippo's Hot Dogs. Owners are transplants from Chicago and get everything right.

(Picture of the great Chicago Dog done right in my nic. Or, I guess not. Yelp has been banned here? Oh well, just look up Hippo's Hot Dogs on Yelp in Troy, MI.)

But I still miss my neighborhood place in Chicago, Jacky's Hot Dogs on 55th and Pulaski.

710 Let's face facts. Acts like Janis Joplin and the Doors and a bunch of others in the period had one breakthrough track, put out an LP, you know three tracks from that LP, they fucked up on everything else and died.

The Beatles are memorable only because over six or seven years they put out a consistent body of work, some of which was pretty damn great. Then they broke up and the only things that mattered after that were 'Junior's Farm' and some decent Harrison/Ringo stuff. Do you listen to more than five seconds of 'Ebony and Ivory' before you punch the button? Most of what Sir Paul has done since the '70s has been cringeworthy.

The Stones have done a small number of great tracks and a lot of shit over the decades, they still exist as a band because of stuff they did when I was learning geometry. I wouldn't pay $10 to see them.

The Who did a better, tighter, body of work over those same years, but once again there's cover bands who do their worthwhile stuff better than they do now. All those old Brit bands were full of guys who just wanted to make money to be rural baronets and retire music to a hobby. My hero is Nick Mason. I want his cars.

Meanwhile you've got recent bands - the Dollyrots and Bowling For Soup come to mind - have done a VASTLY better body of work than the Doors or even, maybe the Stones, ever did in a comparable period in their career.

But the billionaires put out one or two tracks that scored them as cultural icons because right-place-right-time. And some put out a lot of AOR sludge (hi Elton!) over a decade.

So they're on top, I'll credit Bowie and the Beatles and some others with belonging at the top culturally (hi Fripp!) but there's no way any of the rest should be icons.

No. That's the wrong question to ask. Under our form of government, every new law removes a bit of our freedom. Trust me, you don't want Congress cranking out laws. What they should be doing is repealing a whole bunch of them. I still think every law should automatically become null and void after five years. If it's such a good idea, make them justify their removal of our freedom all the time.

And besides, congresscretins don't write the laws they propose, their donors or some others organizations do. That's another thing that needs changing. I didn't vote for them, I voted for my rep and I expect only the person I voted for to be crafting laws.

They're really good at traditional blues songs. The campus jazz station plays them during the blues show on Saturday nights. That's where I heard them the first time.

Posted by: Wendy at April 22, 2019 12:47 PM

Um, you do know that Chicago's main pizza is actually thin-crust pizza? It's famous/infamous for deep dish pizza, but Chicago thin-crust is the best pizza around, in my opinion.

Palermo's on 63rd on south side of Chicago is the best. Sweet sauce just makes the pizza. (Yes, I am biased, as it's my hometown)

Unfortunately, I've been stuck in SE Michigan since 1999 where they have no idea what thin crust pizza is. "Detroit Deep Dish" is just square pan pizza. Then there are the lousy chains (Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Jets and Hungry Howie's) which is all bland garbage.

Only thing close to Chicago thin crust pizza here is PizzaPapalis. And another great place that's somewhere between Detroit Pan and Chicago thin is "What Up Dough Pizza" in Shelby Township.

But I miss Chicago, where you could walk into any pizza place in the city and get a great thin crust pizza.
