The Father of Neoconservatism, Norman Podhoretz, On Trump and NeverTrump

Over at Claremont Review of Books (paywalled and I don't think you can get around it), Norman Podhoretz gives a rare interview and expresses his opinion on Trump, NeverTrump, and, indirectly but unavoidably, his fat, soft-handed, lap-of-luxury decrepit soyspawn Jon Podhoretz.

I think a very key distinction between them is elucidated here: Norman Podhoretz grew up as a poor blue-collar kid. He became a famous intellectual, but he was and is a blue-collar kid.

His son, on the other hand, grew up a dapper cosmopolitan princeling.

Norman Podhoretz praises Trump for being a -- yes -- fighter, while the soft-handed crew of the S.S. Cuck all counsel surrender.

One disagreement I have: NeverTrumpers are, in fact, willing to fight. They're willing to fight viciously and bitterly -- so long as the opponents are conservatives. Then the knives come out, then the eye-gouges and low-blows begin raining, then the shivs start getting sharpened.

But they won't fight this way against their neighbors -- physical neighbors -- in the leftwing cities and tony suburbs. For them, the seek compromise and understanding.

Have they ever tried to seek compromise with Trump supporters?

No, them they brand as Nazis and Deplorables.

They are among the most tribal people on earth -- it's just that their real tribe is, and has always been, the cosmopolitan intellectual class of the left. They share most of their political, cultural, and social DNA with the left.

By the way, if you really want to read the article in full, without stealing it, you might consider a one year subscription (four quarterly issues) for $19.95.

I might subscribe, actually. Half the people I talk to talk about it a lot.

CRB: Some people say that Trump has a blue collar sensibility. Do you see that?

NP: I do see it and even before Trump--long before Trump--actually going back to when I was in the army in the 1950s, I got to know blue-collar Americans. I'm "blue collar" myself, I suppose. I’m from the working class--my father was a milk man. But in the army I got to know people from all over the country and I fell in love with Americans--they were just great!

...

That's one of the things--it may be the main thing--that explains his political success. It doesn't explain his success in general, but his political success, yes. Also--I often explain this to people--when I was a kid, you would rather be beaten up than back away from a fight. The worst thing in the world you could be called was a sissy. And I was beaten up many times. Trump fights back. The people who say: "Oh, he shouldn't lower himself," "He should ignore this," and "Why is he demeaning himself by arguing with some dopey reporter?"

I think on the contrary--if you hit him, he hits back; and he is an equal opportunity counter puncher. It doesn’t matter who you are. And actually Obama, oddly enough, made the same statement: "He pulls a knife, you pull a gun."

After reaffirming his support for the Iraq War and his initial opposition to Trump for saying that Bush "lied" us into war, Podhoretz turns to the NeverTrumpers:

... So for a while I was supporting Marco Rubio and I was enthusiastic about him. As time went on, and I looked around me, however, I began to be bothered by the hatred that was building up against Trump from my soon to be new set of ex-friends. It really disgusted me. I just thought it had no objective correlative. You could think that he was unfit for office--I could understand that--but my ex-friends' revulsion was always accompanied by attacks on the people who supported him.

They called them dishonorable, or opportunists, or cowards--and this was done by people like Bret Stephens, Bill Kristol, and various others. And I took offense at that. So that inclined me to what I then became: anti-anti-Trump. By the time he finally won the nomination, I was sliding into a pro-Trump position, which has grown stronger and more passionate as time has gone on.

...

CRB: But many of your new set of ex-friends, as you call them, were with you on Iraq and democratization, which explains partly at least, why they are against Trump. You deviated from them, or they deviated from you.

NP: Well some of them have gone so far as to make me wonder whether they’ve lost their minds altogether. I didn't object to their opposition to Trump. There was a case to be made, and they made it--okay. Of course, they had no reasonable alternative. A couple of them voted for Hillary, which I think would have been far worse for the country than anything Trump could have done.

But, basically, I think we're all in a state of confusion as to what's going on. Tom Klingenstein has made a brilliant effort to explain it, in terms that haven’t really been used before. He says that our domestic politics has erupted into a kind of war between patriotism and multiculturalism, and he draws out the implications of that war very well. I might put it in different terms--love of America versus hatred of America. But it's the same idea. We find ourselves in a domestic, or civil, war almost

At this point, Podhoretz talks a while about the Long March Through the Institutions -- the Marxist takeover of the schools and universities -- and how a nation of patriots and warriors has sent its children for two or three generations to be educated by pacifists and America-haters, and how that has had precisely the effect on American culture and politics that the Marxists planned.

But I can't quote the whole thing.

So returning back to Trump:

CRB: What are his virtues, if you had to enumerate them?

NP: His virtues are the virtues of the street kids of Brooklyn. You don't back away from a fight and you fight to win. That’s one of the things that the Americans who love him, love him for--that he's willing to fight, not willing but eager to fight. And that's the main virtue and all the rest stem from, as Klingenstein says, his love of America....

On the snobbery of the NeverTrump rump:

There's snobbery in it and there's genuine, you might say, aesthetic revulsion.

It's more than disagreements about policy, because the fact of the matter is they have few grounds for disagreement about policy.

I mean, I've known Bill Kristol all his life, and I like him. But I must say I'm shocked by his saying that if it comes to the deep state versus Trump, he'll take the deep state.

You know, I was raised to believe that the last thing in the world you defend is your own, and I am proud to have overcome that education. I think the first thing in the world you defend is your own, especially when it's under siege both from without and within. So the conservative elite has allowed its worst features--its sense of superiority--to overcome its intellectual powers, let's put it that way. I don't know how else to explain this.

yeah, that's pretty much all there is to it. He is the wrong sort, and left them out of power by winning and not consulting or obeying them.

That's one area where Trump is utterly wrong: Bush did not lie anyone into war. And he's wrong in his support of government-run healthcare. But he's right in so much else I can live with the other parts.

Bingo!

And that, Morons, is the key to everything that is happening. They don't really hate Trump. Not really. Trump is the proxy for Trump supporters that have always existed but been forever ignored and beaten over the head for being the source of evil since the dawn of man.

All these politicians, media mavens, and actors accepted - even loved - Trump before he started running for office to represent Deplorables. They wanted his input, his money, his time, his regard. Until his Common Man Candidacy.

NONE of these people hate Trump. It was never about Trump. It's about Trumpers. It always has been. They loathe the Common Man.

And Trump was the only one who stood up for them/us when we were begging for a representative to do just that and gave better than he got because he knew how.

100 That the normals sent their kids to be taught by marxists and anti-americans is the reason why we've almost lost the country.

Too many people either didn't believe what they saw and heard or were too lazy to do anything about it.

And btw that goes back to the '50's cuz that's when the marxists started taking over the teaching profession. I know because is was taught by some of the first to come from the teachers colleges that always inserted snide asides about how bad america really was. That's about when the students started protesting in the high schools in the '60's then graduated and started protesting in the colleges.

That said, there still was a majority that raised their kids up to be american and they didn't take to the marxists propaganda as readily as the wealthier/urban elite kids did.

Snobbery explains a great deal of what is occurring right now. The amusing aspect of this is that many languorously bathing in this snobbery are, in fact, looked down upon by greater snobs than themselves, with no love lost on the hoi polloi who just happen to be on the same side as them vis-a-vis Trump. Is there anyone, for example, who believes that the Clintons give a rat's ass about working class Americans?

117 "love of America versus hatred of America"
Yes, it's traditional civics versus critical theory. And critical theory does not mean critical thinking; it means constant criticism of America in particular and Western Civ in general by enumerating every sin or failing, not matter how "micro". For a while a society can live on the fumes of past civic virtue, but eventually it catches up to you. Look at the so-called homeless, the college snowflakes, the continuous racializing of every event, the template of hate against Republican presidents. All of this is social justice, born of Marxism, which is not justice at all. It's privileges for the chosen ones, and white males need not apply.
Trump lives and breathes opposition to this tripe, and that's why I love him.

120 From the last thread, but worth repeating for those (like me) who are trying to catch up with the news...
***
Do you think it was a coincidence that Barr announced during his Congressional hearings the other day that the FBI spied on Trump and he would be investigating the investigators? Cause I don't. That's the next logical step. Do you think it's a coincidence that Horowitz is producing his report now that Mueller is finished? Again, I don't.

The fact is that people here are impatient because they follow it all day, everyday, but in the grand scheme of things it hasn't been that long. The Whitewater investigation when on for 6 years. Watergate was 4. This has been 2. Hell, I remember the night when people here was absolutely positive McCabe wouldn't be fired. Then he was.

This is the single biggest political scandal in the history of the country. It dwarfs Watergate. It includes virtually every Obama agency that could be involved and numerous foreign countries. It is both huge and sensitive.

These investigations always take time. But now the counter investigation can proceed without danger to Trump. Two dozen or so senior FBI/DOJ people have been fired or forced out and some criminal investigations are underway with more coming. And we are just beginning to get to Ukraine.

A little patience might be a good idea cause this still is going to take time.

But it's still mostly biting and pulling hair. Vicious, but vicious biting and pulling hair. And a lot of whining and crying while they do it. And then they go back to their thumb-sucking.

147 NeverTrump's main problem, I think, is that they are too much like the "Anyone but [candidate]" bumper sticker warriors.

"Anyone but [candidate]" is a stupid position. You can have candidates you like more than others. You can have candidates you hate. You can have candidates that you think are so dangerous that you'll accept - even enthusiastically support - a *bad* candidate in almost every respect if it means keeping that other person out.

Hillary was in the third category for me. I was a fairly early Trumper (he was "my guy" during the primary) but virtually any Republican would have gotten my vote in '16 - not because I liked him but because I thought Hillary to be so dangerous.

But what if Warren or Sanders were her opponents? I might actually vote for Hillary in that case because she's just a violent crook and not a communist.

The problem with "Anyone but [candidate]" is that eventually you'll vote for the devil himself as a result. So either the NT crowd is that foolish or they genuinely put Trump into that third category. As Podhoretz mentions here, there is little to disagree about vis-a-vis policy unless you love foreign adventurism. If they have Trump in that third category, then it tells you that they are actually, genuinely and completes *wrong* about what matters.

I did cringe at first by the way he talks. However, when I listened to what he said, it was fine, or actually good, policy-wise.
I went into college, literally AFTER converting my parents from democrats to republicans and sat through all those idiot professors pushing marxism knowing exactly what they were doing. Rolled my eyes at my idiot contemporaries carrying on about Reagan getting us killed and took the "young democrat" bus to vote for Jesse Helms.

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Pony trekking or camping
Or just watching TV
Finland, Finland, Finland
It's the country for me

You're so near to Russia
So far from Japan
Quite a long way from Cairo
Lots of miles from Vietnam

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Eating breakfast or dinner
Or snack lunch in the hall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored
A poor second to Belgium
When going abroad

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
Your mountains so lofty
Your treetops so tall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all

Oh focus on Finland friends

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
Your mountains so lofty
Your treetops so tall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all, Finland has it all

Yeah ... yeah ... he eventually came around to the sensible point of view, but it took him a long time and he had no great insight about it or anything. I'm happy that he's not a total idiot but I didn't see anything impressive in that interview. It would be astoundingly stupid if he hadn't come to most of those positions.

And he wasn't really correct on a lot of things. Having the school put him into speech training had nothing to do with his parents thinking that the teachers and schools knew everything. Nothing of the sort. Back then, immigrants were embarrassed by their accents and certainly wanted their kids to have no accents and "be American". It wasn't about the schools having any great knowledge.

251 I think Trump's biggest appeal to most Americans is that he represents a repudiation and a voice of opposition to political correctness. We had gotten like 24 years of it non stop and people were sick to death of that crap. Trump stepped up and flipped all of them off. He's the personification of that guy who wouldn't kneel to Loki.

Every time the left freaks out and demands everyone kneel to PC, more people remember why they voted for Trump. We used to warn them that this was how they got Trump to begin with, but it was like talking to a cat.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 17, 2019 06:18 PM (39g3+)
+++++++++
I think it goes deeper than that. He identified - without ever actually saying these words (in fact he might not know it except viscerally) - what PC actually is.

The pro-PC crowd talks about how it's about being nice, or being inoffensive, or accommodating minorities. It isn't. That's just the window dressing. PC is really about hating, belittling, marginalizing and ultimately destroy normality. Normal Americans, those outside the bi-coastal elite enclaves, see this even if they don't articulate it.

Trump sees it and fights it on those terms, even though he doesn't articulate it. PC is about destroying normality, and that is why it is so hated. It isn't about being polite.

In the sixties, he'd have been a Democrat. In the seventies, he probably could have run as either party. His platform is quite centrist.

This is the problem - the right isn't anchored in anything and so it just becomes about "don't move any further left." If the further move left comes, that becomes the new defensive position. I think that may be starting to change. This isn't about policy differences any more.

I would love to have a policy disagreement but in order to do that, my opponent and I would have to share *some* fundamental foundation stones. If we can agree that Western civilization is good and worth preserving, that free speech is sacrosanct, that public government is superior to all other known types of government, that merit should be the arbiter of success, that government 'doing things' must necessarily come at the expense of individuals 'doing things' and that it should be assessed on those terms, that nation-states are sovereign, that market economics and property rights are the foundation of a healthy economy and polity and restrictions on them should be carefully and soberly considered - then I can debate policy.

The problem with the new Left is that they share not one single thing with anyone else. The old Left was a group with whom you could have a policy disagreement because they did share those core precepts. You cannot negotiate or bargain with someone who's core precepts are perfectly antithetical to your own. This is where the new Left lives, and it is why they must be destroyed. Once the existential threat is removed, we can go back to policy disagreements where a Dem might *not* be a bad guy - just a guy with whom other not-bad guys disagree.

But it actually means a certain group (who had a lot of Jewish members, so it gets that slur with it, too) of liberals who couldn't side with their non-patriotic brethren when it came to actually fighting the Soviet Union. So, they became conservatives where foreign policy was concerned - including being of the opinion that you should fight the proxy wars, and "nation-build" in order to stop the Soviets from doing so. They joined a lot of conservative magazines and such and wrote some great (and some not-so-great) conservative foreign policy pieces.

Some of them became conservative in other ways, too. (Hard to be anti-Soviet and not be at least something of a free-market capitalist.) Then there were folks like The Captain.

Some of them became Republicans instead of conservatives, and they were often the people turning the GOP from the party-of-small-gov't into the party-of-big-but-efficient-so-it-costs-less-gov't.

315 I don't know if its true that these elitists don't hate Trump, too. Some Dominick Dunne novels include characters clearly based on The Donald and Ivanka Trump and those two are pretty much laughed at as gauche arrivistes (or whatever the term is). Dunne's stories are usually true w/very thinly disguised characters. The problem was probably more Ivanka's gaudiness.

I don't know how the US (of which CA is not part of) has been doing it, but tallow was outlawed as far as I know decades ago. There was a burger joint in Palo Alto (yes, that Palo Alto) that was called The Bedrock, as in Flintstones. They had awesome burgers, and fried all of their stuff in tallow. That had chili fries to die for. For some reason in the heart of hippyville Silicon Valley, there was always a line at lunch time.

When the non-hydrogenated veggie oil mandate went out, the place took its own life in a grease fire. On its own terms.

Posted by: clutch cargo at April 17, 2019 06:41 PM (sLicW)

365 This tracks with my theory that the NeverTrump folks are largely second-generation conservatives, who grew up in the institutions that the first generation (Reagan, Podhoretz, Buckley, etc.) built. They learned how to talk the talk, but they didn't have the life experience (WWII, Korea, the early Cold War) that drove the first-gen to develop the modern conservative views. So when the Cold War ended in the early nineties, the second-generation wasn't able to reevaluate their positions based on a changing world.

The third-generation conservatives are the alt-right, who represent those coming up at the tail-end of the Bush years and throughout the Obama years. They are reevaluating everything.

Yes, it is a bit "egg-head" reading, but its analysis of politics, history, and philosophy, and culture (mostly through the review of recently published books) is foundational to independant conservative thought. It has always been either slightly, or openly pro-Trump. Not because of personality, but because he represented a rejection of the failed Establishment conservatism of the last 20 years. It was the magazine that published the crucial Flight 93 Election essay. They understand the War. Even if you don't read it, support it.

The term has assumed several meanings over the decades but it originally referred to Dem intellectuals who turned against the Party when it veered sharply to the Left in the late 60's.

Irving Kristol and John Podhoretz were yuuuuge figures in the movement.

396 The biggest mistake the Dems ever made was attacking Trump. If they bothered to cozy up to him, say nice things, hell, he'd give them a decent amount of what they want. he would treat them right. he'd make a good DACA deal, and a deal on the wall, and on taxes, and health care. Infrastructure. Stuff they want.

But they go after him, day after day. He'll go full conservative just to spite them. I can live with that.

398 good post ... the blue collar thing is real. But there are other generational wealth things ... so the hate seems to perpetuate itself. People want to be economically upwardly mobile, but the magic of government sponsored markets has made so many uber wealthy, and they REALLY don't want to give up the free ride.

Funny, cuz the "free ride" is what they use to attract the welfare state ... which in no way works as an indulgence for the ill gotten cosmopolitan wealth. The Renaissance Man was competent in multiple arenas ... but the spoiled cosmo boy only needs to know the leftist memes. "Cuck" is a useful insult, but maybe "tribal" is also fitting, to show they really just want to belong in their protected class, with walls shielding them from blue collar life.

If you raised him well, to be a confident, self-assured man who don't take no sh*t, then he'll be okay. Anything less than Conan, though, and he's doomed.

Posted by: GWB at April 17, 2019 07:13 PM (ugHaR)

402 "I was raised to believe the last thing in the world you defend is your own."

My parents were raised that way. If there was a controversy between me and another kid, my mother would be the first to throw me under the bus. And the parents of most of my friends were the same way. So the parents would be arguing, "I'm sure my child started it." "No, my child is at fault." "No, my child has a history of doing this." "No, my child is a complete monster." Ad nauseum.

There was a girl in my elementary class that nobody liked very much. I didn't live near her, but according to the kids in her neighborhood, whenever she got it a dustup with another kid, she would run to her dad who would then come out and berate the other kid. I think she wasn't liked because the rest of the kids thought she wasn't playing fair by involving her dad whenever she didn't get her way. There was a sense that she and her dad were breaking the rules.

So it somewhat astounds me when I see today's parents always come rushing to their kid's defense. That's not how the parents of my day acted. The parents of my day taught us that we'd better settle our differences on our own because we'd get no support from them.

And now we're a nation of snowflakes.

406 So once you decide there are people who shouldn't live, how do you decide there are people who should live? Who decides? What if my idea of who is valuable is different than yours? Should some people get due process and others not? Who decides? Explain to me your phenomenology.
Posted by: dagny at April 17, 2019 06:25 PM (nRWPy)

The people we fight are those that get a thrill of thinking they might be the one who decides who can speak, who can get jobs, who keeps their money and who dies without the slightest sense of responsibility.

The 'cause' or 'compassion' is just a cover for allowing them to destroy without getting critiqued for causing it.

Posted by: Oldcat at April 17, 2019 07:27 PM (FTPn0)

407 But PDT is a patriot and while he may have had democratic leanings, remember he is the consumate capitalist and with the dems running to the Left, normal Americans turn to the Republican side, which is what naturally happened to Trump I think. As they say he did not leave the Democratic Party, they left him
Posted by: Nevergiveup at April 17, 2019 06:44 PM (Y+V3r)

That was also Reagan's line, that the Dems left him.

I am not sure that gay parents can control a certain creepiness that in normal times was apparent. The last time one of these type of "arrangements" made the news, the parents committed a double suicide and took the poor defenseless kids with them (Lesbians out West I believe)

410 I just remembered something I read several years back about utopianism and the perfect being the enemy of good.

I will grant you that the Clintons, Obamas, John Kerrey, the Kennedys and many others on the left are greedy opportunists who want nothing more than to sit on gilded thrones and forget the rest of us except as servants. But I actually do know liberals that fit that definition.

They honestly have a very Utopian vision of what America should be, and they fly into a rage when something does not meet their expectations. They truly believe they love America and that they are every bit as patriotic as someone who flies the flag every day. Unfortunately, they've all read Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky and their idea of Utopia is based on those twisted ideas, so they are dreadfully disappointed when even a single American citizen fails to live up to their concept of what America and Americans should be.

I know the rest of you are rolling your eyes and muttering something "splitting semantic hairs". But I can honestly see a little daylight between the people who despise America and the people who are angry because America has not achieved their idea of perfection yet. (Yes, I am a Libra.)

412 knew a Finnish chap years ago in Lantana, Florida, which is was a colony of Finns back in the 70's.

He would buy old heavy equipment and cars and ship them back to
Finland. He was also a huge slumlord and one of the cheapest persons I
have ever known.

He had nothing but s's and i's and u's in his name but everyone called him Pomo.

I think he was a Finnish gangster.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at April 17, 2019 06:33 PM (Z+IKu)This made me laugh. One of my uncles sold mining equipment. Finns sold a TON of old machines to the USSR because the Commies produced nothing but crap. Additionally, people in Finland envied woodcutters and other jobbers because they could hide some of their income from taxes.
In the '80s, my uncle got a letter inviting him (and by extension the family) to "return" to Finland to work. (Some of my great-grandparents immigrated from Finland.) As a business owner, he took one look at the corporate tax rate of 60% and said Ay! (Finnish for NO iirc.)And Finns could probably beat the proverbial cheap Scots. Save, save, save... and then put something away just in case.
