Notre Dame Update: Firefighters Are Not Sure They Can Save the Cathedral; The Left Bell Tower Is Still Aflame; Fears Grow that the Ropes Holding the Massive Bells Will Fail and the Bells Will Smash Through the Remaining Wooden Supports

From LeFigaro's updates.

Via Fox, the "Great Bell," called "Emmanuel," is the most likely to come down.

I don't want to spread fear, but while stone might be mostly impervious to fire, it won't necessarily be impervious to a very heavy copper bell smashing down into its foundations at an awful speed.

Some Good News?

"Some good news: All the works of art have been saved. The treasures of the cathedral are intact, the crown of thorns, the saints sacrements."

I don't know what "saints sacrements" means in French but I would guess it means the holy relics of saints.

Or, maybe not: I heard earlier that there were a bunch of statues of saints which had been removed to a safe location earlier, owing to the hazards of a construction project. Maybe they just mean that.

I'm going to assume, though, that if they say they got out all the works of art, that includes the relics, almost always kept in reliquaries, which are themselves works of art.

Update: Commenters tell me the saints sacrements are the sanctified hosts, the wafers, given at communion. Ah.

The Crown of Thorns is, supposedly, the actual crown of thorns worn by Jesus at his Crucifixion.

Fears are growing that Notre Dame’s most precious treasure, a relic venerated as the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus Christ, could have been badly damaged or destroyed in the fire.

The Crown of Thorns, considered Paris’s equivalent of the Crown Jewels, is stored at the end of a nave of the cathedral, not readily visible to visitors.

Said to have been worn by Christ before the crucifixion, it is presented to believers for veneration on the first Friday of each month and every Friday during Lent.

Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible NotreDame fire under control. All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.

21 I am sick of hearing those idiots criticize trump's suggestion of dumping water from the air.

I am also confounded by the lack of spray. Is the area so tight that the engines could not get near? Most cities have equipment that could put a platform above the roof, but I see nothing.

When I first saw this, my first thought was that I wonder if they can drive a truck right into the nave - if the doors are big enough.

But the french seem to be waiting for rain or something.

Old roofs are mostly tar, and that shit has to be fought aggressively.

Old vaults are trusses, and that shit is horrible for fires.

I guess the french are spending all their money on something else besides firefighting equipment.

88 The bell is not big enough to destroy the foundation, but the heat and the lack of stabilizing force from the vault might me.

These cathedrals are not wall and roofs, but they are big trusses with forces balanced out. If some elements are removed the rest can shift or fall.

And heat is very bad if it gets hot enough. the only thing worse than heat is to rapidly cool with water, so fire can do a lot of damage.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at April 15, 2019 04:38 PM (dNzKv)

I dont know, man...

wood that old? You could probably hold a lit cigarette to it and it would light on fire.

We get a lot of barn fires in new england where barns from the 1700s burn down super quickly from what would be a small, easily extinguished fire in a building with new lumber.

Dried out old lumber goes up pretty quickly.

92 Horrible, horrible, thank you, God, for letting me ring Emmanuel twice.

Read an article from a firefighter on why it's impossible to contain this blaze--12x12 800-year-old wooden beams can burn like hell. The huge open space of Notre Dame means no lack of oxygen to feed the fire. The immense size and height of the building, and that it seems to have started at the roof, means it's very difficult to get the water from hoses to soak the roof. Still fighting off tears.

Posted by: Murrican Ninja War Eeyore at April 15, 2019 04:29 PM (xptlg)

NONE of the great old European buildings have done that. It costs a lot of money, and nobody wants to pay for it. Also, having toured some grand old buildings - the usual manner of construction is that there's a sub ceiling, what those in side the building see, then a large chamber, then the roof (and maybe a couple more layers than that)

When a devastating fire gets going, it's usually inside this enclosed space, much like an attic in a house. This allows it to spread through the length and breadth of the building before breaking out - and you can't put water on it from above, and you can't put water on it from below, without knocking out big chunks of the building.

On a large building like this, the Inconvenient Truth is that without a fire suppression and abatement system pre-installed before a major fire starts. the Building will be lost no matter how good or fast the fire fighting effort is. The fire fighters are simply unable to access the core of the fire, until it is far too late.

But our son isn't the only one who carries. Our pastor would be shocked by some of the "harmless looking" women who carry in their purses.

Sanctuaries are a really hard problem, security-wise. There is little you can do from inside since it is basically always a surprise attack. Almost everyone sits with their back to the door. It is unfortunate that we're approaching the point of "post an armed guard outside the sanctuary doors while everyone is distracted facing the altar to look for suspicious behavior," but we may be there. Some areas are there.

My synagogue does this on the High Holy Days, and has for years - and we're in a very calm, very normal, not at all anti-semitic part of the country.

Right. Could have been a spark from a miter saw cutting a piece of metal or something that was smoldering on some old lumber for a few hours before it really took off as a legit fire. Who knows?

Let them tour it. This gives them an inside edge should something go sideways. Host a C.R.A.S.E. course or something similar.Bad things are coming

A lot of hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient clinics are inviting LEOs into their facilities to help them plan a course of action in case an active shooter(s) gets inside and goes postal. Many older hospitals were built in stages over the years and have unbelievably complicated floor plans (as do some cathedrals), so you really do need to know the location of exits and fire extinguishers (or other items that could be used to deter or disable an attacker).

I'd always wanted to hear the sonorous sound of the old Latin ("In nomine patris, et filii, et spiritu sancti"). It was well attended, and quite impressive . . except for the priests' continually turning their backs on the audience to recite! Why do they do that?

The person who posted that photo on Twitter is wrong about the war in question and about the specific cathedral. The photo is of Notre Dame in Reims, not Notre Dame in Paris, and the Reims cathedral was shelled by the Germans in WWI. Notre Dame in Paris wasn't bombed by the Germans (or anyone else) during WWII. It did suffer some damage from stray bullets during the liberation of Paris in 1944.

Again, you either pre-install fire alarms and fire abatement

European Churches: Vandalized, Defecated On, and Torched "Every Day"

Countless churches throughout Western Europe are being vandalized, defecated on, and torched.

In
France, two churches are desecrated every day on average. According to
PI-News, a German news site, 1,063 attacks on Christian churches or
symbols (crucifixes, icons, statues) were registered in France in 2018.
This represents a 17% increase compared to the previous year (2017),
when 878 attacks were registered -- meaning that such attacks are only
going from bad to worse.

574 The fire was in the roof structure, oak timbers over 1,000 years old, and between the lead-sheathed roof above and the stone caulted ceiling below.

The ceiling stones fell to the floor 300 feet below, fatal missles every one. A fire such as this one could not be fought or contained.

When such cathedrals were built in the 300-year period starting about 1000 A.D., the hoisting of everything, timbers, lead sheets, stone for ceilings, and more, was done using what, in effect, looked like a kingsized man-driven hamster wheel.

Bishops and dioceses have been knocking down fine old RC churches all over the country, and re-organizing their congregations to split them up, over this theological issue. It has come nearly to blows, and to occupation and eviction, at several places, including Boston.

To old line Catholics, it's right at the heart of the godless commies taking over the Church. I'm not RC, but their fake "Spirit of Vatican II" interrupted my public school Latin career (local priests had enough pull with Bd of Educ to get Latin cancelled, because it had become an embarrassment to them). That interruption cost me actual money in college, and I shall never forgive them.

Since 987, the kings of France were all crowned in Reims Cathedral, with the exception of Hugh Capet, Robert II, Louis VI, John I, Henry IV and Louis XVIII.

On December 16, 1431, Henry VI of England was crowned as "King of France" in the Notre Dame de Paris.

During the First French Empire, Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Josephine were crowned in December 1804 in an extremely elaborate ritual presided over by Pope Pius VII and conducted at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Posted by: Rob Crawford at April 15, 2019 05:29 PM (VwHJ2)

I don't know where you got that quote, but it is wrong. The Blue Mosque was built on the site of one of the palaces of the Byzantine Emperors, the Great Palace. Which was their primary residence until 1204 when the Venetians took the city. Over the next 47 years the palace was mostly ruined by neglect (Baldwin II, the last Latin Emperor, actually removed and sold what remained of the lead roofing). When Michael Palaeologos re-took the city in 1261, the Great Palace was in such bad shape that he moved the Imperial residence to another palace within the city (the Blachernae Palace).

The Blue Mosque is, however, near the Hagia Sophia, which was the patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople until 1453, then a mosque until 1935, when Ataturk turned it into a museum.

Admittedly, the sheer size of Notre Dame plus the old architecture makes this plausible. I hoped the firefighters would have a plan, especially considering how long the fire was burning, but hindsight is 20/20.

The thing is, France is already a powder keg for nationalism vs globalism. People mistrust their elite experts, if they don't loathe the experts and wish for death/ deportation. On top of the history of church fires... it won't matter if there is a responsible party or not. An errant spark could send France up in flames. President Trump hates Macron and might happily provide that spark to burn down the Fifth Republic.

618 seeing we're talking about arrowheads - remember the word "warhead" comes from Medieval days, to reference when you'd use the most lethal tips on your arrows, as opposed to say Bird Points, which would be very light.

And I believe one important distinction between a "warhead" and a standard hunting point is the the Warheads will have the typical Arrowhead shape we know, with two broadly spaced backwards pointing tips making it very difficult and destructive to pull out. A hunting point would be more of a sharp edged pointed oval, a hunter wants to be able to pull his arrow out quickly without damaging it, so he can reuse it right away.
