Spire Completely Collapses

The spire is no longer visible on the rear of the cathedral. Here's what it looked like 10-15 minutes before the collapse:

Firefighters say "these flames are set to burn for some time yet," according to France24's English language feed. (Amidst taking various shots at Donald Trump.)

The most iconic parts of the church, the bell towers, are in the front, and so far look like they might survive... if firefighters can at least slow this inferno down.

It doesn't even matter if a muslim did this, because they're cheering it regardless.

From this day, for me, April 15th, 2019, Islam in the west is on a timer. They must SHOW and PROVE their desire, not only to assimilate and coexist with non-muslims, but to themselves sniff out and exterminate the jihadists in their ranks, or they must be expelled from our nations.

Western tolerance has reached its limit.

323 Regarding the efforts of firefighters. Let's get some perspective here:

The only images we have are from blocks and blocks away. We have no idea what they were doing from the inside, or what is out of our view.

It is nearly 115 feet the the ceiling of the knave in that cathedral. Probably another 2 feet of timbers, roofing material, and so forth. That's equivalent to a ten story building. You're not going to reach that from the ground with hand lines. I am not familiar enough with the roads around there regarding access for fire equipment.

Most truck companies in this country have 100' to 110' ladders and towers. I would assume the Paris fire brigades have something similar. It takes space and time to get them into position, and even then, you have to worry about collapse. A church of this size is very prone to collapse once the roof burns off, and the roof burning off was a forgone conclusion on this fire. You don't put firefighters and equipment in the collapse zone.

As for boats, you have the same access and reach issues to contend with. I realize this is on an island, but how far from shore? The bigger fire boats can reach 300' out at 100-125' high, but the cathedral looks to be about 200' from the closest shore. And that's assuming a boat of that capacity could draft in the Seine and get right to the shore.

As for air drops, the idea has merit but is impractical. A helicopter bucket drop averages about 250 gallons. That's a ton of water. Literally. So you're dropping 2,000lbs of water on a structure already weakened by fire. That weight, and resulting debris, is going to go somewhere. You might put the fire out, but you'll still destroy the building.

Church fires are losers from the first spark. To big of an area, too much combustible framing, no way to get an effective and sufficient fire flow going quickly.

It's a terrible tragedy, and I hope the workers who started it (and this is the most likely and common cause of such things) aren't of the ROP persuasion. Know how we'll know? If it never gets reported how it really happened......

One thing that is different about the Paris Fire Brigade (Brigade des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Paris) from fire departments here in the U.S. is that it is a unit of the French Army. It is the third largest fire service in the world (about 8500 firefighters), after the Tokyo FD and the FDNY. Napoleon made the BSPP a military organization by imperial decree in 1810. The BSPP firefighters are trained to shoot as part of their training and march with assault rifles during the annual Bastille Day parade.

Stonework can be replicated with CnC machines. I assume the Cathedral was electronically recorded down to the last cobnail. The timbers can be cut and finished likewise per stone. The glass is gone but if they were imaged they, too, can be replicated. The problem with this approach is you will end up with a machine made cathedral. Sort of the opposite of what it represented.

I've done quite a bit of work with firefighters over the years including the French. The truth is most big cities are scary underprepared for these massive fire events because of the density of the cities and size of some of the structures.

Sprinklers and active measure are vital and where they don't exist this type of event isn't all that surprising. Fire can spread amazingly fast, particularly in an old wood structure like the frame of Notre Dame.

And no agencies are more underfunded than fire departments.

so what was the point of this comment?

As for air drops, the idea has merit but is impractical. A helicopter bucket drop averages about 250 gallons. That's a ton of water. Literally. So you're dropping 2,000lbs of water on a structure already weakened by fire. That weight, and resulting debris, is going to go somewhere. You might put the fire out, but you'll still destroy the building.

Posted by: Eustace H

were you using some other form of the language where what you wrote is suggesting that using tankers was a good thing?

some suggested using tankers. you were arguing against doing so. do you know what you wrote? were you arguing for tankers?

even if tankers destroyed some of the building, if they saved some of the building that would be better than losing the entire thing. structural damage from tankers would be better than losing the art inside.

now you go back and read what you wrote and explain how what you said is not what you said.

then take whatever meds you need and maybe come back.

On the other hand, from the perspective of the Macron government, this does clear away a lot of red tape to begin to implement plans to replace the Notre Dame Cathedral with the Grand Mosque that must eventually be erected in its place.

Holy crap, the media/authorities have lost all credibility...

My very far Left boss just said she doesn't care if they say it's an accident, that she doesn't believe it, and "we all know" what this is.

I don't even agree with that - because it's too early to say anything for sure. But, that makes the fact they're calling it an accident suspicious on it's own.

And if they've lost credibility with this lady, well... that's a bad sign for them.

Sparks?

That reminds me of the time when I was in grad school and contractors were renovating a laboratory (using cutting wheels to remove stuff in concrete on the 1st floor). The sparks they sent down into one of the basement level professor's offices did a pretty creditable job of trying to burn the chemistry building down.

Arson's certainly a possibility but I'd seriously consider option #1 as well.

you seem confused. there were suggestions of using tankers. no one said that was the only way. do you not remember what you wrote?

you must be able to do better than this. why not address what you wrote and I quoted? you know, the thing you said you did not say?

ways of getting water to the fire have been discussed throughout these threads.

you wanted to shoot your fat mouth of regarding why tankers would not work. so get busy and address that.

using tankers, even if it caused structural damage, may have been more desirable if it saved the artwork inside.

maybe you should have been talking to the firefighters there to share you expertise as to how to get water to the fire?

556 Yes I saw that - Gene Wolfe passing.

I mean he was pretty up there in age, but still, a huge loss.

This also is a massive loss - what a sinking feeling. And btw had that same heartsick feeling all day watching them just - what were they doing? waiting it out?!?

the fire started in the morning!

557 Since the Cathedral of Notre Dame is the seat of the Archdiocese of Paris, there should be a website with a schedule of activities for Holy Week. And as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Paris, I doubt that there was any serious work being done today. Just my guess, though.

Posted by: mrp at April 15, 2019 03:03 PM (Pqytn)

558 Also, if you thing dropping 2,000lbs of water on a fire is simply going to go straight down and then evaporate, you've never seen 250 gals dropped. The column will take down everything in it's path, splash over over everything at the bottom, not just with the water, but with all the broken, burned, loosened materials it brought down, and destroy all the art, woodwork, windows, tapestries, whatever else is inside.

For those of you who can't see beyond your own noses,

I never, ever suggested the should just let it burn. I am sure the Paris Fire Brigade are working had to apply water where they can as fast as they can, in an effort to stop the fire and SAVE AS MUCH OF THE BUILDING AS POSSIBLE.

In my opinion, it shouldn't be. It now belongs to the Ages. Paris still needs a cathedral, and a church named Notre Dame has stood in that spot in various editions over the centuries, but this one is gone. Let it go. Build something new -- please, do not let Frank Gehry design it.

------------

It was basically abandoned.

Posted by: SH at April 15, 2019 02:47 PM (sX1BW)

It was declared an open city in 1940 to try and avoid having the Germans destroy it. The Allies obviously didn't want to bomb it either.

And for the fire fighting arguments - consider a fire fighting cannon the other day literally blew the emergency door off an A320 Saudi Airliner emergency exit door when it landed in Dubai.

And it's not like we're getting up close shots of what the French firecrews are doing to save this thing. At some point we all know you preserve the lives of your crews over a building, no matter how old and sacred it might be. I can't fault them for not sending crews INTO the Naive beneath century old timbers with lead sheathing on a roof above them.

If you watch water bombers, or helicopters with buckets, in action, you will see that the slug of water rapidly breaks up into a cloud of thick mist as a result of its rapid passage through the air.

So just release the load a little further from the target than you would if fighting a forest fire.
