The Difference Between Personal And Public Principles And Ethics

Dennis Prager speaks of this distinction in his own life, and it is an important one. Most of us adhere to a (hopefully) relatively well-formed ethical structure in our public discourse, but out of necessity modify that structure in our personal lives.

For instance; I have a nephew who is intelligent (or at least has the capacity to be intelligent), but woefully ignorant of the realities of the world, so he fancies himself a socialist. He is young and stupid and full of himself and has no experience with what socialism really is, but he is welcome in my home and my heart, and I wouldn't dream of treating him the way I treat socialism and socialists in the public sphere.

Professional Homosexual groups are another example. They are a subset of the Left, and their goal is to erode the moral fabric of America, and muddy the boundaries between socially acceptable behavior and the insanity that is currently being debated; 57 genders and transgenders and pansexuals and on and on and on. My particular pet peeve is the craziness of transgenderism. It is nothing more than a form of body dysmorphic disorder.

But that is the macro. What about regular garden-variety gay people (some of whom read and comment at AoSHQ!)? Should I shun them and heap scorn upon them at the supermarket and at my dinner table? Should I shout "f*g"* at every opportunity?

Of course not.

And here is someone who disagrees...Principled in the Macro/Compassionate in the Micro? Not Really.

And I disagree with him. I refuse to hold individuals accountable for my perception of the failings of their groups. My ultra-conservative, gun-toting, rabidly-Trump-loving, military-supporting friend (who happens to be gay) is also always welcome at my table and in my heart, and the idea that I would reject him because of the political goals of some gay pressure groups or my philosophical and social disagreement with the "gay agenda" is nuts.

It is that attitude that drives leftist pundits to suggest that waiters spit in conservative's food, that conservatives be shunned and made unemployable, and all the other lunacy of the Left and their desire to create metaphorical (at least for now) internment camps for those who would disagree with them.

* I am being respectful of our host's wishes.

18 Christianity, I think, handles this quite well at least at the theoretical level.

Personally, if something is morally troubling to you, it is a sin for you. But only for you, if it is not prohibited by God in His word. The example given by Paul is "meat offered to idols" where people would feel uncomfortable buying and eating meat that someone had offered to Zeus or some other false god.

Paul said "its just meat, there's nothing sinful about eating it, but if it bothers you, then you should consider it sinful and abstain." You can't hold others to this standard, only yourself. The term used is "adiophra" or "things indifferent."

At a general level, Christians are told to remember that all are sinful, all fall short of God's glory, and all are hellbound save for the doing and dying of Christ. Thus, we cannot point a bony finger of indignation at others for their sin as if we have none (this is the meaning of the "judge not" admonition by Jesus).

Christians are supposed to hold each other to a very high standard -- that of Jesus Christ -- but not non-Christians, who can't reasonably be expected to even know God's law let alone consider following it. We're told and know that the only reason we try to do so is because of God's work in us through the Holy Spirit.

So we are to treat people neighborly and with love, and hope to show them through example and gentle teaching to be better.

21 The problem, IMO, is with the education these young people are getting. My grandchildren are post 9-11 born, and I constantly run into thoughts they've been taught that I need to correct. They can't be faulted for not being aware that there are other ideas if nobody tells them that there aredifferent ideas. I like to think I've enlightened them, but in reality it's enough for me if I've caused them to think.

But he's welcome to parties and he's still family and we love him. He just shouldn't bring his fake husband to the festivities, because of how it affects and upets the other members of the family. I consider it similar to an adulterer bringing their mistress to the family party -- are you kidding me?? You're not married. You can't marry a dude no matter what the court claims.

The perpetuation of iniquity is the issue. Once upon a time, such things were rightly abhorred and intolerable because people were honest enough to admit, and wise enough to realize, that leaven will only spread if even a speck is allowed to remain. Choosing to ignore that simple truth for only, what, 100 years is why we're in the decayed state we're in now. It spreads fast.

I'm not interested in hanging with them. Too many things are a one way street with the more rabid lefties ...they drink the leftist hate, and I don't want them spitting it at me.

But most people I run into are just normies, that are not political, or they recognize the corruption of much of the political/union class. And this county voted 70% Trump, especially out here in the sticks ... so that is not really an issue.

Race or sexual orientation never mattered. it sucks the left works so hard at dividing us, since all the strong Trump supporters I know from old NOLA days, all hang/work with gays/blacks, even the Irish. But the MFM all day tires to drive the wedge of hate ... fluckers.

50 The trick is how you approach things. Its one thing to say "sinner!!! repent or die!" and another to gently and humbly say things in love. Jesus kicked over the tables and lashed people in the temple, its true, but as the incarnate God he had the authority to do that kind of thing. He truly was sinless and perfect. Me? Not so much.

There is a kind of moral stupidity that states that people who have done wrong and stupid things in the past need to keep their mouth shut when others do wrong, but the truth is the more you've experienced the bad of sin and immorality, the better a judge and the more reasonable a foundation you have for telling others not to.

Its like someone who has actually burned their hand on the stove telling others to not do so: trust me. I've been there. Its bad, even if you think its not yet.

What do we have now?

Gay Pride parades complete with debauchery and nudity as regular events.
Same sex marriage (polygamy is coming soon and we are seeing acceptance/legalization of minor children being "married" to old men because "culture").
Adoption of children by homosexuals.
Gender as a social construct defined by the mentally ill.
Giving children opposite sex hormones in the cause of transgenderism.

So these days those homosexuals, et al who came out of the shadows will now sue you into oblivion, dox you, ostracize you, and make you an unemployable pariah--if you somehow insult them, use the wrong pronouns, or whatevs.

I'm not an old lady - nor do I identify as one - but I remember this too. The problem is the personal was the political. We wanted to pretend it was just personal, a matter of live and let live, but that was never the case.

131 It is that attitude that drives leftist pundits to suggest that waiters spit in conservative's food, that conservatives be shunned and made unemployable, and all the other lunacy of the Left and their desire to create metaphorical (at least for now) internment camps for those who would disagree with them.

That's right on the money. There is literally zero difference between the insane pogrom against conservatives in every aspect of American public life and the Nuremberg laws enacted against Jews. The difference is that at least the Nazis bothered to pass actual laws, which they only dismissed entirely when planning the Endoslung. American leftists are more venal in that this violates their own anti-discrimination laws and the spirit of the American nation since the Revolution. Yet they are INCOMPARABLY more stupid in enacting the laws against the white majority, who are also the most well-armed and self-sufficient part of the population.

Leftists had better hope Trump succeeds. Someone else, and this point I even include myself, would take no effort to awaken the tens of millions of addicted, impoverished white Americans. And then what larks!

133 I once owned a lawn service business with my friend Wayne back long ago. Wayne was gay and lived with his "husband" who was an equally nice guy.

I liked Wayne and I knew he was gay but it was business and we made good money together and he was a hard worked and a good partner.

One day I asked Wayne what he did on his time off. He said he and his husband went to the local gay bars and drank and danced and had a good time and after 10 or 12 dates in the parking lot they went home.

I asked Wayne what he meant as I did not get it. Wayne said he and his husband would hook up with other fellas and do the you know what in the car in the parking lot then go back in and keep partying.

10 or 12 times with different guys in one night.

I, old, jaded been there, done that Hairyback Guy was shocked.

148 There are distinctions to be drawn here.

1. It's problematic to take the position of the linked article, because of the glaring fact that we are all sinners. Sure, sodomy is a sin. But then, so is even fantasizing about a woman not your wife. On that one alone, I'm finished. It is fundamental to Christian doctrine that no one is worthy.

2. There is a danger in the "I don't care" attitude, in that it so easily (and usually) fades into "there's nothing wrong with it. That's a non-sequitur. (An analogous case is those market libertarians who move from "a private organization can do what it wants" to "you shouldn't criticize such actions.")

3. There is, on the private as well as the public level, the problem of those who demand that you take notice and approve. This isn't really new; I saw it in the early 70s. The only new thing is that people are more afraid to criticize it.

4. There is a legitimate question of which behaviors are socially dangerous, and under which conditions. The homo chic is really a part of a wider phenomenon, the sacralization of sex, per se (and relatedly, of romantic love). But the biggest openly dangerous fact is not something the homosexuals are doing. It is the out-of-wedlock birth rate. And the destruction of the family, in general. (Note, Benedict has just pointed out this, and a lot more. I miss him.)

5. The entire elevation of tolerance is itself something that can be questioned. It is so deeply embedded in us (and in me too, I'm a NY Boomer) that it is treated as a self-evident truth, and as fundamental to the moral law. That means that discussions of the limits are almost impossible; this is compounded by the current trend on the left to carve out places where tolerance is not only not practiced, but considered intolerable. One point here is that actions and arguments are so often conflated. It is possible to be fairly strict on the former, but allow the latter (as in the 13th C, for instance.)

Posted by: Eeyore at April 14, 2019 03:29 PM (VaN/j)

149 140: It is usually the wives who feel free to vocalize their "honest opinions" in the most vulgar terms, like that dem woman, Tiegen, who thinks dems should say "fuck you" more often. As I mentioned above, you don't need to come to dinner if that's your preferred form of expression to your hosts.

150 "So we are to treat people neighborly and with love, and hope to show them through example and gentle teaching to be better."

Except that's exactly what the Left and all of its branches tell themselves, too. About us. Yet they are increasingly willing to use force of government and plain terror to do it.

No society can survive that intact. A breaking point must come.

(An analogous case is those market libertarians who move from "a private organization can do what it wants" to "you shouldn't criticize such actions.")

Related: The idea that the government should not criminalize certain behaviors does not mean that such behaviors are not wrong nor does it mean that people, either as individuals or as private organizations, should not be allowed to criticize that behavior or advocate change.

I'm thinking specifically of CBD's post some years ago in which he took umbrage at an article arguing that people should stop watching Game of Thrones, on the grounds that How Dare Someone Tell Free Americans that a private choice was wrong.

176 A zillion different sets of circumstances, a zillion personal approaches here.

None of the many, many, many people I have somewhat or substantially, effectively, shunned or dropped due to their political ignorance and alien values have any responsibility for any "groups". But they do for themselves, their own words, and behavior.

That's my approach. And I have endured literally decades of humoring bigots and airheads and also highly intelligent successful people who are drooling idiots when it comes to public policy. One large set is "normal" people, with no background or experience whatsoever in anything beyond their personal professional stuff. NPR listener types. Maybe 20 years ago, I'd gently correct them on something, but it always depended on context. The other set are deeply involved (and up to levels including US senators and other - past - senior officials) - the chill with them started long ago, and was about complete about 2006 or so.

Just good manners, a relaxed personality, and the absence of any evangelical impulses has usually sufficed. But in recent years my patience was worn out. Which has led to low-key avoidance or shunning, no drama. Everyone has their own style.

For decades, with the first group, I didn't raise a "political" topic. Decades. Not once. But some of these people, especially the most ignorant, misinformed, or least effectively intelligent ones, can't help themselves. Their lack of socratic knowledge is breath-taking. So they go out of their way to raise topics they nothing about - but boy do they have "opinions". Dumb, baseless, socially determined opinions that are merely regurtitating the Idiot Marinade in which they've soaked their whole lives.

179 Love the sinner but hate the sin?

Sure, people are people, and some are idiots, some are misguided, and some have invincible ignorance about reality.

None of that means one can display bad manners, publicly or privately, without consequence.

That said, no, I will not attend a so-called gay marriage ceremony. No, I will not refer to "married" homosexuals as man and.... husband. No, I will not invite "married" homosexuals into my house, because my children would see that and assume I was good with the whole notion. I'm not.

I guess I'm just an old fashioned garden variety bigot.

Except, I'm not. I want the highest and best for my friends who believe they are "gay." I want them to have wonderful lives and go to heaven. I want them to learn how much God loves them, but hates their sin. Just as I feel about adulterers, liars, blasphemers, and any other miserable sinners, such as myself.

I do not judge people. That is God's job. But I do judge behaviors and the consequences of behaviors, and that is what I have been told to do by God Almighty. There are such things as intrinsically evil behaviors, and it is important to say so. It is NOT intrinsically good to do so in a manner that causes more pain, hurt, or damage; that is also a sin.

To the left, I'm the worst kind of deplorable. But it is the convictions I hold that have allowed the left to have the freedoms to behave the way they do. So be it.

184 I work for LAPD and my best friend there is gay ... and conservative. He laughs at and mocks "Big Gay Inc." as he calls gay activists. He grew up around the world due to his father's work including a couple years living in Saudi Arabia as a teen. He learned what real "homophobia" means.

I mock the whole transgender phenomenon with the best of them. That being said, my niece recently asked me questions about problems my son had with severe anxiety when he was younger because of issues she's now having with her teen daughter. My sister (the girl is not her granddaughter, she's my brother's) told me the "issues" she's having seem to be she wants to become a boy.

Now that it has hit close to home, I still don't feel any differently in the macro sense that this whole movement is a leftist sham. There is a lot of plasticity or malleability to many people's sexuality in the teenage years. I'm not saying it's untrue that some people truly feel they were born the wrong sex and have always felt that way, but I believe too many people are swayed by the media to latch on to this for some respite to issues they have. I love my niece and I will be supportive and compassionate privately, but I still feel a great disservice is being done by the media to inflame this phenomenon and make it grow.

Technical point here: Read the salutation to the Ten Commandments "I am the LORD thy God who brought you out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage"

So unless you are an ethnic Jew and reject the revealed Messiah, the Law is not for you.

Sinners are just doing their job descriptions. Far too many are overachievers.

OTOH, The Just lives by faith, not by works. As mentioned in another thread, it is the sanctifying action of the Paraclete that replaces the Law in stone with the Law written on the heart.

As for "judging" - the Elect are supposed to be fruit inspectors. Starting with oneself.

The law is written upon the hearts of all, Jew and Gentile alike. It is called the conscience. God put it there. It is what informs people who never heard of Him of right and wrong...unless and until their sins bring them to a point where they have seared their conscience into insensitivity. At that point, there's likely no hope of repentance.

Said all that to say, appealing to that sense of right and wrong is a legitimate use of the law, as it is the schoolmaster that tells of our need for Christ. That's its purpose.

Unfortunately, way too many kids born or were infants on 9/11 who go to a public education system have been taught that destructive attack was what pondscum like Ilhan Omar said it was.

I woke my 5 year old up early that morning, and brought him into the TV room about 5 minutes after the second tower was hit. My wife disagreed, but I said he was 5 and he was old enough to learn everything, and we sat and talked about what was happening.

My son first learned about evil that day. While it was thousands of miles away in a suburb of Seattle, it was evil. He was set straight about Omar's type that morning.

Oh, and when he went to Catholic elementary school, as the news came in and the towers fell, they prayed. And prayed. And prayed some more.

Another fault of our public schools - those kids had to face it without asking for help from God.

220 I hope this isn't too late, but it's been crazy busy at the store where I work. I will never vote for Mayor Pete because of his policies - period. However, his personal life is a legitimate object of scrutiny. Frankly, I don't believe the official version we're being given.

221 Did a double take on this one. Prager's thoughts are close to a mirror image of something I've been thinking about.
How do you explain to a "progressive" or their dumb little brothers and sisters in college, that political correctness is wrong and not useful. After all, they will say, we're just asking you to be polite and not say something that upsets someone. I've had them say that its what they teach their young children. I've been thinking that this is taking something that is in fact "polite" in an individual and inappropriately forcing it on the public discourse and making that discourse much less effective. This is to the detriment of millions while PC as politeness only helps a few. I'd also been thinking that public morality and private morality differ as well. Things that are moral for me such as going tinto debt to send a child to college may not be moral for the government. Why,? Because the consequences are different and damage different individuals and groups. My debit damages me and my immediate family and arguably my heirs. A small group which can probably recover from my debt. The government on the other hand is damaging not only millions of people but millions of people in future generations. The results of the governments sale of debt to send someone to college are vastly different from the results of my debt, both in scope and degree of damage. My thoughts, which are still only half jelled, is that one major problem with progressives is that they can't tell the difference between an individual and government. Mind, I'm only talking about the 'useful idiots" among progressives who actually mean well. Not the careerist power seekers or the mental defectives who just get their jollies by bullying someone to get their way. So, on second thought, my ideas may only apply to a handful of "progressives" after all.
