Ms. Blanco is also a practicing orthodontic specialist in Atlanta. According to her webpage, patented Chessmile™, a set of orthodontic metal brackets with the shape of chess pieces for each tooth.

Easier Problem - White To Play (959)

Goal: White can force a mate in 4
Hint: Break the pin on the rook on f3

Chess With the Masters:

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (960)

As you can see, White has a lot of firepower pointed directly at the castled King's position. What's the best way to bring the game to a successful conclusion?

Goal: A clear mate, but it will take awhile
Hint: "In these types of positions, combinations are as natural as a baby's smile."

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190413 - Problem 1.jpg
q4r1k/5p1p/p2pp2Q/1p2b3/8/2P2R2/P1P4P/6RK w - - 0 1

Answer:

White would have more freedom to do stuff if he could do something about that nasty pin on his rook. But what?

1.Rg2! Qd8

Of course, if 1...Qxf3 then 2.Qxf8#.

There really isn't much Black can do to stop White now. If 1...Rg8 then 2.Qxh7+ Kxh7 3.Rh3#. My moving his queen to d8, Black only succeeds in delaying the checkmate by one more move.

2.Qxh7+ Kxh7
3.Rh3+ Qh4
4.Rxh4#

r1q2rk1/pp3ppp/2pbn3/8/4B3/1QB1PP2/PP3P1P/R3K1R1 w Q - 0 1

Answer:

1.Qxe6!

Gets the ball rolling.

1...fxe6

The end comes quickly with 1...Qxe6 2.Rxg7+ Kh8 3.Rxh7+ Kg8 4.Rh8#

2.Rxg7+ Kh8
3.Rxh7+ Kg8
4.Rg7+ Kh8
5.O-O-O

White needs more ammo.

5...Rf5
6.Rg3+ e5
7.Rxd6 Qf8
8.Rdg6 Kh7
9.R6g4 Qg7

or 9...Kh6 10.Rh3+ Rh5 11.Rg6+ Kh7 12.Rxh5+ Qh6 13.Rhxh6#

10.Rxg7+ Kh6
11.Bxf5 Rh8
12.R7g6+ Kh5
13.Rh3#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I never did get braces. My siblings all did. Don't know why. I've always resented that.

Doctor told me to push my tongue against the crooked teeth and they would eventually straighten. They didn't.

More Difficult Problem (seems much easier).

1. Qxe6 (threat: Rxg7+ followed by Rg6#)

obviously Qxe6 does not stop this threat

1. ... Re8 (to give K room)
2. Rxg7+ Kf8 (or see above).
3. Qxf8#

So try a delaying tactic.

1. ... Be5
2. Bxe5 Qxe6 (stops discovery in first line)

Not good enough but:

1. ... Be5
2. Qxe5 and now the mate threat is unstoppable.
... Qf4
3. Qxg7+ Qxg7
4. Rxg7+ Kh8
5. Rg6#

On to the "easier" problem.

BIG FAT WOMEN ! Six or eight of 'em, And it took awhile for them to come in so I figure there must be an all-you can eat buffet nearby, so then, I lean over to look at the title (AGAIN !) and I hear "excuse me" and this lady's pushing a baby carriage and I'm tellin' ya this thing was bigger than some of the cars people drive today.

Posted by: Deep State is in DEEP SHIT at April 13, 2019 06:44 PM (BqBId)

173 Welp...I got nuthin' for the fishing thread, so-

Saw "Hellboy" yesterday.

I don't get all the critic hate for this one (unless they're all del Toro fanboyz).

This is a movie that just wants to entertain you and goes all out trying to do it.

You know how every time there's a superman or Batman reboot, they gotta give you the origin story all over again.

And how you wished they'd just get to the "present day" story.

Welp, that's exactly what "Hellboy" does. This movie is a bit like "Hey, here's what a week in Hellboy's life is like."

There's an overarching end of the world plot as well as a few sub-plots to keep the action going. Very little slow down- if it ain't one thing it's another. Again this movie really wants to entertain you.

Excellent acting by all involved. Nice fast moving plot with interesting side-trips that all fit in. Great action and gore. Baba Yaga sequences are creepy as hell. Giant fight awesomely awesome. The opening of Hell on Earth horrific. And much much more. Nice humor. Some great twists.

Excellent CGI except when it's not- I'm looking at you "talking with the dead" sequence.

Very much a popcorn movie and a rollicking good time. Solid B+ or perhaps A-.

Rotten Tomatoes has horrible ratings from the critics, but the viewer's ratings are overwhelmingly positive. The critics got this one wrong.

Check it out.

People endlessly point out that the memoirs were penned from Churchill's perspective, and may not be 100% unbiased in their presentation of fact.

Okay, well, so what? That hardly amounts to an invalidation. There exists no comparable compilation of which I am aware. The inclusion of copious verbatim memos from the time alone render the reading worth it.

Moreover, I find nowhere any misrepresentation of salient facts. I regard all six volumes as well worth the read, and most especially the first volume, 'The Gathering Storm'. That should be regarded as 'must-read' for anyone interested in the 20th century, which is how we got to where we are now.

My childhood dentist would lie about needles. Flat out say he didn't use a needle and had this technique where he hid the needle behind one of those little mirrors they use.

I saw right through it. He was supposed to be a good children's dentist.

272 A synopsis of the TV show The Good Fight

The show primarily deals with the storylines of its three female leads - Diane, Lucca, and Maia - and contains considerable political and social commentary, exploring topical issues such as the alt-right, the Me Too movement, online harassment, and fake news. As well as starting again in a new firm with its own office politics to deal with, longtime Democrat Diane must navigate a world she hardly recognizes, becoming increasingly troubled by Trump-era politics and the actions of his administration.

It was designed to launch satellite-carrying rockets at high altitudes, but most of those projects have been cancelled, leaving it without much to do. Hopefully it won't become the 21st Century's equivalent of the Spruce Goose.
