Time, Keeps Flowing Like A River (on and on), To The ONT.

Sorry, I'm getting to this really late, so I'm mostly just going to throw up some links and that'll have to do.

Blue Jays.jpg

Oh, Another Star Wars Movie

The First Trailer for Star Wars IX dropped today

The reviewer at the link didn't like it, and he's happy to tell you why. I did notice one line, however:

Disney reveled that Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker will play to fan service

I wonder if he knows what “fan service” is? In any event, you can watch the trailer at the links. See Rey fight a spaceship with her sword! (really) May the farce be with you.

Politics

Meet the Man Behind Trump’s Biden Tweet

At the cutting edge of political debate lies a troll. And yes, I don't think that bodes well for the long term health of the nation. I know some of y'all don't understand or like it when I post memes on the ONT, but that's so much of what constitutes our cultural “thinking” these days, even if it seems like a stupid thing for a middle aged man to be doing.

Time

Speaking of being a middle aged man, the reason I have so little time to write this tonight is that tonight my parents took me out for a birthday dinner. They're in their 80s and praise the Lord in good health, but they just sold the house I grew up in and moved into a condo. Our conversation revolved around the old neighborhood and the people who lived there. The man who lived behind us is dying in intensive care. Another neighbor died a year or so ago, his house was just sold at a tax auction and someone is starting the process of flipping it. I don't envy them the job, he was a hoarder and the house has been empty for years. Empty of people anyway, all the stuff he hoarded (and who knows how many bugs and rodents) is still there. I think it's only when you get to middle age that you really get a sense of the world existing before and after you, that we're all just moving through it. Driving through the old neighborhood today...there is the house I grew up in, but it's no longer ours. Here is the house where I first fooled around with a naked girl, her family moved out shortly after I graduated high school. Where is she now? I have no idea. Over there is the house with a pool. One fine summer evening a group of us kids tossed crab apples over the fence and scared the crap out of the older lady who lived there as she took a late evening swim. My dad whaled the tar out of me for that stunt, but the lady we scared so badly died decades ago. All those people, all those lives, moved through the neighborhood, but they're all gone now, including finally my parents. The houses are still there, and the roads and the parks and the streams, and they're all the same. Different people are moving through them on their journeys through life. It gives one a sense of transience that can be....disquieting. I dunno. I guess I'm just waxing philosophical tonight. I just realized that I'm twice as many years away from my birth as my birth was from WWII. Crazy.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by WD-40:

The Kingdom reminds me of Enemy at the Gates- and I'll tell you why.

Bruce Willis' character reminds me in the early going like how they portrayed Ed Harris in the EATG. He was a real person who had feelings and a history. He was sympathetic. Then, they flipped the switch and made him evil because, reasons.

You can have two adversaries in a movie and one of them beat the other or one of them be wrong, without making them evil. To do otherwise is a disservice to the audience.

23 When I was 9 and my brother was 7 we made little darts with pins sticking out of the broken-off bottom of a pencil w eraser attached, using yarn to balance the little things.

We then spent a good hour hurling at each other in the garage in an epic war that only ended when all of the darts were dangling from our bleeding flesh.

Ahhh, good times. Good times.

Not coincidently, both of us were born in Arkansas, though mercifully, neither of us learned to speak there.

87 @47 Killing off Han killed any interest I had in seeing the sequels. As far as I'm concerned they don't exist.

----------------------

In fairness, Harrison Ford wanted out. Killing Han was the only real way to do that. And Han Solo is the kind of character that will always be trying to get in the spotlight, which is a problem when you're trying to push a new cast front and center.

Luke, on the other hand, was a sure sign that the people in charge have no idea what they're doing.

Years ago, my father managed to get a couple cases of some good shit. There were two products, "reed stuff" we called it, which was a spray-on lube, and then "green stuff" which was a spray penetrating oil. We dubbed them such for the color of the lettering on the cans.

The Green Stuff was some of the best penetrating oil I've ever seen. You could spray it on some rusted tight nuts and it would break it free. It would take it a while sometimes, but it would do the trick.

I have no idea what it was, and I wish I could get some again.

---------------------

I've got the game Dynasty Warriors 9. It's alright. Koei tried some new things - including an open world - with varying degrees of success. Anyway, the reason why I bring it up is this.

The game is set in the Three Kingdoms era (and while it was originally inspired by the novel, it's moved somewhat to being more historically accurate over the years). So I was riding around the countryside going from city to city, and it suddenly hit me - I was looking at a representation of a city that had existed roughly 1800 years ago. I was playing in a civilization that had existed continuously for much, much longer than that. Here in the West, civilizations have been pretty volatile. The US has only existed for a few hundred years. In China, that's not the case. Rulers have come and gone, but the Han civilization has existed for thousands of years.

And some of those cities on that map are still around (albeit not nearly as important as they used to be).

That's a long, long time. And I felt a strong sense of awe over that.

125 From some website:

The tenth number indicates the year the car was made, or the year of manufacture.

It begins with A for 1980, the first year a standard 17-digit VIN was
used. Subsequent years follow the alphabet of to "Y" in the year 2000.

In 2001, the year changes to the number "1", and ascends to "9" In 2009.

In 2010, the alphabet starts again with the letter "A" for 2010 model years.

Who is stupid enough to think that Bill Clinton, all of the Kennedys, and pretty much every male democrat politician out there hasn't made smutty comments about women? The difference between Trump and them is that Trump is not a professional politician. He hasn't spent his whole life being careful about where he says his naughties, and to whom he says them. He also doesn't have the "press" covering for him like the Kennedys did.

171 Didn't really get anything out of the rest of the Star Wars trailer, right up until the point where Emperor Sheev Palpatine gave a chuckle. I fully expect everything in the movie not involving him to be uninteresting, but mostly what I want to know now is if he's a Phasma-level cameo appearance just to build cheap interest or if he's actually integrated into the story. If the latter, I may go watch it (for free).

I had mixed reviews of junior officers. Some were good people (I think of LT Ring in Heartbreak Ridge), who simply need to prove themselves.

My favorite LT was a former SGT in the 82nd Airborne. He was one of a precious few I ever met with a patch on his right shoulder (keep in mind I served in Reagan's Army, and pulled guard duty in Germany during Desert Storm). Fooker was hard core, but was a natural leader without being a shouty prick. In hindsight, I see him as a Dick Winters kind of leader.

Went to Fort Sam for AIT. Hot fit chicks everywhere. Pretty much had a proto-boner for 16 weeks. (met my wife there)

I hated marching with women. Hated even more having a female call cadence. Different cadence, different voice pitches. Blech.

383 No, not Lemoore. It's a place that keeps changing names in Southern California. I guess you have to have a certain number of uniformed military to be a base. If you don't have enough then you're a division, then a center, then a station...

Anyway when I was there it was a division, though everyone called it a base. Two uniformed military - the CO and his XO. Plus hundreds of civil servants and contractors doing weapons system assessment.

But the CO had to be a captain, for some reason. So you can see why anyone with ambition would want to avoid a post with a single direct report. We normally got screw-ups who didn't screw up badly enough to be forced out, but didn't have 20 in yet, so they were on the mercy retirement track.

They'd be there for 18 months. Took 'em a good six months to get oriented, and after that they would typically try to do something, anything, at which point the civil servants (in the same place for 25, 30 years) would gum up the process for the next 12 months. Rinse, lather, repeat.

That was a long time ago, though. Hopefully things are different now.

They tried the same thing with airships in the 1920s, where it actually made some sense. The trapeze design was pretty similar too. Same problem - the air stream around the mother ship is too unstable for a safe... whatever you call it. Landing? Docking?

402 WeirdDave, I enjoyed your melancholy reflections on the old neighborhood. As a matter of fact, this afternoon I revisited some of the places I've lived, courtesy of Google Maps.
I remember the old lady who lived across the street from us back in the mid 60s. when I was a horse nut. I'm not sure why I was visiting her one day. Maybe I was selling Girl Scout cookies and she invited me inside so she could peruse the list and get a bit of company. Back then, GS cookies were 35 cents a box.

I'm sorry that I didn't understand about lonely old people who perk up when they get visitors, back when I was a child. I was tender-hearted and would have visited her more often had I known.
Anyway, I admired a horse statue she had in her bow window. It was a particularly well-formed and realistic horse statue in porcelain (so many are crap), and the glaze was a beautiful bay color. You could see into it. I noted that one of the hind legs had broken off and had been glued. She told me I could have it. I remember being breathless with delight. "REALLY? Are you sure?!" It probably gave her pleasure to give it to someone who was so taken with it. You know how it is when you get older and things begin to lose their grip on you.
I wonder what became of that statue after I graduated high school. I may have given it to my cousin, who was also a horse nut for a brief time, and three years younger than I.
Is it weird that I think about moments like these from my youth, and regret that I wasn't more aware of the happiness I could bring to people, had I chosen to do so, instead of being self-absorbed in the way that young people so typically are.

I've been reading recently about how FDR wanted to turn Germany into a pauper/100% agricultural state post-war.

As I understand it, a lot of his state deparment employees were aghast about that and more or less refused to put it into practice. Then FDR died, and Stalin took half of Germany for his trouble anyway, so no need to cripple them any further.

They could have dropped it before lighting the engine.
But nobody would want to fly with one of those under the wing. The fuel was hypergolic - one bad seal and it spontaneously explodes, and this was not a theoretical consideration. The fact that they flew at all was a sign the Germans were at an advanced state of desperation.

Anyway carrying it around doesn't fix the range problem much since it's going to need to land not far from the release point.

The Japanese plane was essentially a stand-off bomber. Admittedly, the "bomb" was guided in by its human pilot, but the plane was still basically a bomber.

Get in range, launch the "bomb", and let the bomb pilot glide it into its target.

453 Not hard to sympathize with the Fleet's reluctance to give up the idea of aircraft-bearing airships. It's a beautiful concept, except that they all came to such tragic ends. It just was not meant to be. It's still an attractive idea, and I suspect it will next be tried with drones -- which takes all the romance out.

On your second day at the Academy, they start beating your head up against the idea that you are there to oversee sergeants, not command them. All that over-the-top, my-way, highway business was a consequence of high-pressure training of the VN era, and a couple of great American film stars and their many fans.

A biggish issue the Air Force is having is that a lot of technical officers, to include pilots, who love their work, have no problem leading others in that job, but are not politically motivated to want supreme command and generalship. There's only so high you get promoted doing a task or research, and it used to be assumed that after a little of that every officer would naturally want command and policy-formation authority. Many do not.

In industry and agency work, one of the sadder spectacles I've ever witnessed was people cranked-up to high-pressure "leadership," which all too often consists of twisting their nuts until they become natural pricks. All that phony alpha crap only applies, real world, in a handful of situations. Real leadership in everything else works a completely different way, but once an organization has that shit in is "culture," you'll never get rid of it. Asses will be kicked and names taken right up until they paint over the sign out front.

Not a bad idea, actually. I could see drones performing that sort of work. Cargo plane flies up into the air with a load of missiles, meets a squadron that's already launched its payload, and kicks a bunch of drones out the cargo bay. Each drone is attached to a missile, flies it over to the plane, and delivers it (either attaching it to a rail, or into a bay). Once the drone is finished, it releases the now secured weapon, and flies back to the cargo plane, which returns to base.

Even beyond that, not everyone wants to be a Leader Of Men. The other services have warrant officers to give people a technical track. The policy all USAF pilots must be officers, even drone pilots, is just... dumb.

475 The ME163 was developed as a sort of guided ground to air missile against bombers. It had almost no loiter time and didn't really need it.

there was another design that was pretty much a disposable one where the cockpit was recoverable but the rest was plywood, and that one flew but killed almost all the pilots who tried it , and another concept that was supposed to be armored enough to ram bombers.

478 @462 There's an absolutely terrible movie you'd get a kick out of. "The American Way" 1986 starring Dennis Hopper. Left wing dreck of a story line, but based on the idea of a B-29 (I have always contended it was a B-50) outfitted for psyops during Vietnam, which has never landed since.

There are some cute notions of resupply, and in-flight engine maintenance that makes you remember the Pan-Am Clippers.

By the winter of 1941 they realized they were going to lose a war of attrition. The "wonder weapons" were an effort to shake things up. It's true they probably could have lasted longer if they didn't build the V-2 or the Me163, but they didn't want to last longer. They wanted to win.

It's funny how things can go from looking rosy to desperation in about six months.

The Zeppelins were hopelessly obsolete as a weapons system by WW II. They were used a couple times for spy missions before the war started, pretending engine trouble and drifting over sensitive territory, but once the war started the were relegated to ferrying officers around far behind enemy lines and were eventually cut up and scrapped for the valuable duralumin frame.

A Me-163 carrier would have had to have been some kind of bomber.

I've also come to a depressing conclusion. MI6 is an enemy intelligence agency, which should be treated no differently by America than the KGB. In fact, the UK could be said to have done that which the left has accused Russia; the UK used their intelligence apparatus to first interfere in and then attempt to overturn our election. It's a straight-up act of war. In another time, bombing London in retaliation would not be inappropriate.

This was tried in the 1920s. It actually made a lot of sense back then, since planes were relatively short range and the lift of an airship increases with volume but the weight of the structure varies with surface area. So the bigger you build it the more efficient it is. In theory you could build one big enough to haul around just about anything.

There was a company in the early 2000s that was building an airship that would be used to haul around large, bulky things like dam turbines and such, and the numbers worked out even if the company didn't. You could build one large enough to carry an air wing.

The problem is, as I noted above, the air stream around the mother ship is too unstable to make capturing the returning aircraft safe. If you get a stray gust of wind coming from the wrong direction the aircraft will hit the airship.

Also, I suspect the relatively slow speed of the airship would put performance constraints on the air wing - you'd need to design aircraft with a relatively low stall speed.

Just finished Citino's "The Wehrmacht Retreats - 1943". Good but odd book. It's as much meta-commentary on the historiography of certain aspects of WWII, and revisiting/challenging common beliefs, as narrative or analysis of the title subject. Bibliography and notes are a treasure trove, but lots of stuff in German, which will be hard to come by locally.

Next is Glantz's Kursk book, with an appetizer of Hastings' "Das Reich" about the II SS Panzer's merry jaunt from southern France to Normandy. All while I figure out what is next on the list.

Heh. As a lifelong airship buff I can tell you the landscape is littered with the bleached bones of companies seduced by the idea of getting all your lift from helium and just using engine power when there's someplace particular you want to go.

Ultimately the problem is airplanes cheaper to build because we already build thousands of them. Essentially, WW II killed the airship by pouring the resources of the world's economies into the development of long range bombers, which aren't functionally that different from commercial aircraft - just remove the bomb bays and add seats.

There's no niche for airships that's so perfect you could overcome the last 80 years of airplane R&D. It's literally one of those industries where the way to make a billion dollars is to start with ten billion and build airships.

542 I know it's late in the game here but consistent with Weird Dave's comment, what similar childhood memory do you have that hot you into trouble?

For me it was dressing my cousin's large breed poodle ("Popcorn") in a sweatshirt and laughing as it stumbled thru the house. Apparently we had a little too much fun because at some point Popcorn relieved her bowels and left a trail of poop down the hall and into the living room. My uncle was walking from the kitchen and smooshed his bare toes right into it. My cousin was sent to his room and I had to sit on my aunt's bed for what seemed like an eternity.

546 Weird Dave,

Thank you for that post

I have t been to my childhood home in a very long time. I looked it up on google maps. It was so crazy. I spent endless hours climbing the trees and playing in the creek behind the house. We caught frogs and snakes and turtles.

I don't know if any of the families are still there.

Dunno if I'll ever get back

Great post. Thank you

I'm sure there's a NYPD cop somewhere with a flash drive copy of Huma's/Clinton's emails taken off of Carlos Danger's laptop. Funny how that got buried thanks to the Russia, Russia, Russia 'look! over there! a squirrel!' hoax.

You joke, but the US deployed a system over a Mexican city... Nogales, I think, that took 360 hi-res photos every so often and stored them. When some narco trafficantes shot up some rivals all they had to do was roll back the tape and track the whole network back to the guy who ordered the hit. Rolled up the whole crew.

I'm glad they took down some gangsters, but the implications...

I'm here right now!

My parents bought this house when I was 2 1/2. They were going to sell it about 25 years ago, and move closer to my grandpa to take care of him. I remember how sad I felt. So many good memories growing up here with my siblings. Circumstances changed and they didn't sell.

After dad died and we realized that mom can't be alone, my oldest son and I play tag team, living here with her. It's odd being here in my old bedroom. It doesn't look the same- all my 'stuff' has been gone from here for some 35 plus years, none of the neighbors are the same. Some houses have changed owners several times. Mom has been here the longest. It's kind of cool to be so familiar with everything. I think it will always feel like 'home.'

My dad moved so many times when he was a kid, sometimes he was in 4 different schools in one year. He told me that he never wanted his kids to grow up that way. I guess his promise to us worked- 55 plus years later, still here!

621 Septic Tank Guy is doing the first stage of a short con, documented by SNL in their early days. (Akroyd as farmer, Belushi and Murray as his idiot sons, Newman as his daughter, Morris as hired hand, and Gary Busey as the Scum Jumper.)
Hired hand tells Farmer there's a Scum Jumper coming throught the county. Pa tells sons "If he comes here, give him a drink of water but don't give him any money for anything. I'm goin' to plow the north forty." "OK, Pa."

Handsome, raffish Scum Jumper arrives, asks for water. Sons ask what he does. "For 25 cents, I'll swim in your septic tank." "Really? Here's a quarter."
Jumper goes off camera, splashes are heard, Jumper returns covered in filth. Sons say "Eeew! That's disgusting! All right, you got your 25 cents. Now move along down the road!"
Jumper sits on the porch swing, puts heels up on the rail, leans back, cracks a predatory smile. "That 'Move along!' part? That'll be fifty dollars."
"Pa! Pa! You got fifty dollars?" "You idiots..."
