Rod Rosenstein: Only a Dum-Dum Would Claim that Barr is Misrepresenting Mueller's Report

Well, that's the spirit of it, anyway.

More conspiracy theories into the CNN/MSNBC/NeverTrump trash-fire.

In his first interview since the conclusion of the special counsel's investigation, Mr. Rosenstein beat back suggestions that Mr. Barr is trying to mislead the public by releasing only a four-page summary of Robert Mueller's investigation...

"He's being as forthcoming as he can, and so this notion that he’s trying to mislead people, I think is just completely bizarre," Mr. Rosenstein said.

...

"It would be one thing if you put out a letter and said, 'I'm not going to give you the report,'" Mr. Rosenstein said. "What he said is, 'Look, it’s going to take a while to process the report. In the meantime, people really want to know what's in it. I'm going to give you the top-line conclusions.' That’s all he was trying to do."

Mr. Rosenstein, Mr. Barr, their top advisers and a member of Mr. Mueller’s team have been involved in reviewing the report for material related to intelligence sources, continuing investigations, grand-jury matters and the privacy of individuals not charged with crimes. Mr. Rosenstein wouldn't say how it was going, only that the public should have "tremendous confidence" in Mr. Barr.

Meanwhile, Kim Strassel writes at the Wall Street Journal that Obama officials, Deep Staters, and Democrats are freaking out because they're afraid of what Barr's investigations might find -- and they're right to be afraid.

Quoting from Instapundit, Strassel first notes that Comey refused to brief the Gang of 8 leaders of Congress and the intelligence committees about his illegal spying on a presidential candidate, and the absurd reasons he offers for having so refused.

Here's a more plausible explanation: Mr. Comey and his crew have also testified that they were all convinced Mrs. Clinton would win the election. That would have meant that no politician other than the incoming Democratic president would have known the FBI had spied on the Trump team. Nor would the public. A Clinton presidency would have ensured no accountability.

Mr. Trump's victory destroyed that scenario, and it became clear that the new Republican president would soon know that the former Democratic administration had surveilled his campaign on the basis of information from his rival. At that point two things happened. Neither was accidental, and both were aimed, again, at forestalling accountability.

First, Mr. Comey and other intelligence officials, including Mr. Clapper, engineered the public release of all the scandalous claims against Mr. Trump, to provide some cover. As liberal commentator Matt Taibbi notes in his new book, "Hate Inc." Mr. Comey's Jan. 6, 2017, briefing of the president-elect about the dossier was a classic Washington "trick." It served as the "pretext" to get the details out, a "news hook" to allow the press to publish the dossier--with its salacious fictions about prostitutes and Moscow hotel rooms--and go wild.

Who's been telling you that much, forever?

Democrats used the furor in their successful push for a special counsel, which gave greater legitimacy to the FBI's probe. The appointment of a special counsel also froze other oversight. Congress can’t have access to certain documents or ask witnesses certain questions, since that might interfere with the probe. The White House can't demand answers, because that too would interfere. Mr. Trump's adversaries got to hide behind Robert Mueller for nearly two years.

Click on this WSJ link to read the whole thing. But it's paywalled, so you can't see it unless you subscribe. Oh well, even if you don't subscribe, give Strassel the hit.

56 The left is now using the EXACT same argument that the Deists used to argue for belief in God:

Since God is unknowable, you may not b able top prove his existence, but more importantly you you can also never DISprove his existence. And since you can't disprove God, your best bet is to believe in him. If God does exist, then you go to heaven; but even if God doesn't exist, then of course no harm can come to you by believing in him, since there is nothing beyond the mundane human existence to punish you for believing in something unnecessarily.

The Left now uses the same "logic": Since the classified report can NEVER be seen by the general public, you can never definitively state that it contains NO evidence of Trump's guilt. There will always be the nagging question: Is the evidence in the redacted portion? So the best course of action of the believe in Trump's guilt, since it can NEVER be DISproven.

Of course, the LEft spend 500 years laughing at and mocking the Deists for making this exact same argument. Consistency was never their strong suit.

91 78 Since God is unknowable, you may not b able top prove his existence, but more importantly you you can also never DISprove his existence. And since you can't disprove God, your best bet is to believe in him. If God does exist, then you go to heaven; but even if God doesn't exist, then of course no harm can come to you by believing in him, since there is nothing beyond the mundane human existence to punish you for believing in something unnecessary

107 As noted by many, one serious problem in parts of this may be misbehavior that, while outrageous and historically unprecedented, was not criminal. In an America of a few decades ago, an adult version of former Sen. Kerry's recent op-ed proposal for a commission might be part of the answer for that (might - and this was former NE senator Kerry, not Seabiscuit from MA). In today's America, it's obviously a laughable idea (would make the 9/11 commission look serious).

Many of these loathsome idiots who inexplicably held senior jobs in the USG were up to their empty heads in parts of this, but might not have broken any laws. I am almost comfortable predicting they will never face an accounting. The Dems and much of the GOP have been shockingly blase over all of this, and that's unlikely to change. Unless Barr and his minions can indict you, as one of the conspirators, you're likely going the Lois Lerner route.

Orange County switched based on the first (panel) ruling on a big CC case at the 9th, don't think they switched back when the en banc ruling reversed. (plus, based on her hijinks WRT cooperation with ICE, I think the sheriff there is an amazing and sensible person) San Diego kinda sorta when shall-issue during the last campaign, as the main challenger to the sheriff made it an early/prominent part of his platform. Many I know are waiting for things to lurch back to the "know-somebody" or "sheriff's friend" basis.

Nope - it was actually a very carefully and broadly accepted update to the gun laws put together by GOAL, the legislature, and then-governor Patrick (D) who, turns out, was much more reasonable about guns than the useless so-called "Republican" who replaced him.

My hunch is that last FISA renewal wasn't really a renewal at all. It was a trap.

198 one of my favorite parts of the Khazar Dictionary by Milorad Pavic is a parable told by a demon - I'll summarize:

Two men are sitting inside a large domed room. The one notes a small fly on the white concave ceiling, far above them. To his companion he says "do you see that fly up there? to that little fly, this room seems like a universe, and the white dome above is seems like an infinite expanse."

The other guy agrees. The (demon) guy says "ok well can you communicate then with that fly, in a way in which you know the fly will understand your intentions?"

Other guy thinks, says no way.

First guy (demon guy) walks over with a rolled up paper and squishes the fly. "Do you think it understood me?"

Point being, it may well be that God CANNOT communicate with us very well in ways we can easily understand. (In the book, the demon implies that God communicates with mortals thru their deaths.)

215 Cyber crimes? The Concord case? It is to laugh (should check, a friend's law firm is the counsel for the Russian defendants, there was some funny scuttlebutt earlier, maybe some more by now). Back to the earlier sub-topic, if Rosie's expanded scope of work for Mueller is ever made public, I still don't think it can in any way justify appointment of a SC to investigate ..... foreign entities engaged in what are prank-level political shenanigans. Make that "I am certain" that won't within the SC regulation.

Recall that the then-WH counsel said Rosie's SC appointment blindsided everyone, including Sessions. Probably for good reason. Because it wasn't remotely legitimate under existing statute and regulation. And given the 2-year delay in actually dealing with the real crimes and scandal that Strassel probably correctly attributes to the existence of the SC, it'll be some pretty impressive 1,238-dimensional chess to justify Rosie's action on that matter.

225 What's amazing here, is that the main stream journalists of conversation bent are just now in early 2019 getting into this game. The sentiment fleshed out by Stressel in today's WSJ has been said before here at the pirate ship early last year.

It became clear sometime north of the discovery that Hillary Clinton and the DNC paid Fusion GPS, and that Fusion GPS was everywhere at the root of the information flowing into Obama's alphabet agencies, that Mueller appointment and Buzzfeed Dossier article were a spasmodic "oh shit" moment by the bad actors.

What they did here was SO bad, SO criminal, that every single one of them knew on that glorious night when Trump was elected President, that their entire gambit was going to burn and crash to the ground in spectacular fashion, and that indictments, trials and jail time were sure to follow.

This state of mind explains EVERYTHING and ties all of the disparate parts together. 25th amendment? Aimed at getting Trump out of office to prevent disclosure of the crimes. Mueller? Thy had to do something -- anything -- to slow down (or preferably, to retroactively legitimize) the surveillance. But not Mueller as a real, honest and fair investigator. They needed Mueller "in house." So, Mueller populates his A-team with the very people that perpetrated the crimes. Sessions? Can't have an AG not involved in the crimes looking into this stuff, so use same Muh Russia crap, amplified by bum rush of media stories, to get him to recuse himself. For being seen in the presence of a Russian diplomat, at an official party Sessionzzz attended in his official capacity, in public, a few years ago.

Nunes? Can't have that dude looking into it. Ethics complaint on legal side, same media bum rush against his character and intentions, including cocaine and hookers. On a boat, owned by a winery in which Nunes is a limited partner, donated as an event in a charity auction, with zero knowledge, involvement or action by Nunes. (see pending Nunes' lawsuit against McClatchy and detestable "republican consultant" Liz Mair).

We've been screaming from the rooftops since the beginning, that this is the biggest scandal in American history, and people need to be in jail. This is an unprecedented outrage. Happy to see mainstreamers finally catching up and all, but god damn the whole lot of conservative thinkers, elected officials, writers and news personalities who let this outrage perpetuate for two years -- unanswered. And for not defending this President, who has been wronged to such a degree that it's hard to articulate.

Day of the Rope, when?

And he certainly won't be using foreign intelligence services to avoid the laws or any other such criminal acts. So there's nothing to worry about.

235 "The White House can't demand answers, because that too would interfere.
Mr. Trump's adversaries got to hide behind Robert Mueller for nearly two
years." from the WSJ article

Rosenstein is the one that orchestrated Mueller's coup ... and made sure it went anywhere Russia/Trump (their own lies) might lead.

So no, it is not clear that Rosie is now a good guy, or ever was. Two years of damage done, Rosenstein had oversight of that obstruction of POTUS/coup. Barr came in and ended it quickly. He brought Rosie back for some certification of the events perhaps ... but the two years of damage was immense.

236 Trump giving a speech right before the 2020 election
where he calmly lays out the crimes committed by Obama and Hillary, and
then he issues them pardons, would be great.

And then he says "But Lynch and Brennan and Clapper and Comey and
McCabe and Strzok and Page and Baker and Schiff and Warner? Nope. No
pardons."

Posted by: Sharkman

Why pardon them? FTS. I want a body count. ESPECIALLY if they were the ones making the decisions.

Because it wasn't remotely legitimate under existing statute and regulation. You're missing the point because you are confusing why a SC was appointed. Do you honestly think that Rosenstein would lie about it when all is about to be revealed?

The prevailing thought is that Rosenstein appointed a SC for offensive reasons. What if it was for defensive reasons?

Stop assuming and go back to May of 2017 and look again at what was happening. It's not 4 dimensional chess. It's fucking checkers.

290 They were sure she would win.

When she didn't, they needed to find a way to save their skins. Because, after all, they are good people. They shouldn't be punished for just trying to do the U.S.A a favor and save us from Trump.

So, since they are all so very sure Trump was dirty, just upped the ante, and investigate even more. Surely there would be something, and once they found it, well then, all sins would be forgiven. They can muck up the timeline and make it seem like they knew he was dirty all along.

Problem was they made a second mistake - Trump is not dirty, OR he is so damn good at hiding stuff (having been investigated multiple times in his career) that they would never, ever get the dirt.

That is why they are all such self righteous assholes - they see themselves as martyrs, they believe they should be applauded for their actions, not condemned. You know, Like the SS in Germany.

But who convinced them of their righteousness, that Trump was an existential evil? They will never admit they were fooled. But who fooled them?

The Democrats and the media. They convinced these guys to go rogue over nothing.

It's taken this dude less than four months to figure it out. First independent person to review the full file, and here we go on real investigations.

I'm starting to regain some confidence. It's still early, but all signs point to accountability, at long last. We have a loooooong way to go, and only when the orange jump suits are issued can we have a real discussion about the status of this Country's justice system.

One can only hope that there remain true patriots and honest brokers somewhere in government, who know that corrupt public officials, especially corrupt intelligence and law enforcement officials, must be prosecuted and punished aggressively due to the amount of power and trust afforded to these persons. A breach of that trust, and the redress and punishment of that breach, is what exists in the thin line between a free democracy and police state.

After 6 of us, and his time in the Pacific helping teach Hirohito not to make Uncle Sam mad, biting into a bitten chocolate probably didn't register at all on his "oh my God" meter.

Two reasons, as I see it:

1.) More at stake than just Hil-Dawg. They wanted to rip Trump to pieces and jail him after he lost, to show the rest of us what happens when they challenge the King.

2.) To ingratiate themselves in the coming administration, which was certain to be an open-air festival of corruption and crime. To show you are loyal soldiers of the King, and gain his favor.

310 And that Mustang is not 'original' original, it is a Cavalier rebuild from the 1960s. The square-tipped cuffless prop and the extra cooling vents on the belly radiator sides give it away. But not a Cavalier F-51D Mk II since the plane still has the original short D tail.

Nice to see the armor behind the seat, the SCR radio atop the fuselage tank, and the K-14; though the .50cal muzzles seem a bit rusty.

311 JS, unclear on your comment.

I'm claiming that appointment of an SC was not legitimate under the regulation. Unless the mandate were *completely* inverted, directed at other targets, where some underlying predicate crime the regular DOJ could not investigate for conflict of interest reasons had occurred. Nothing to do with Rosie lying - the first scope was made public. THAT document was not legit, within its own 4 corners.

I'm not assuming anything, other than that the amended scope to Mueller didn't fix the problem, or flip the script - otherwise, the perps we're waiting to see dealt with would have been, not Manafort, Page, and FFS Roger Stone.

And how can an SC appointment be "defensive"?

"Mr. Barr didn't merely refuse to recuse; he's made clear he plans to plumb the FBI's actions thoroughly. That makes him Threat No. 1 to everyone who participated in these abuses, and it's why the liberal media establishment is now disparaging his integrity. They are stunned and scared - that accountability has returned to the Justice Department."

318 >>Oh yes, someone please explain.

If you haven't seen the June 28, 2018 Congressional hearing where Rosenstein testified and was asked about that particular FISA warrant or forgot it's importance, watch this.

http://tinyurl.com/y4o5u5xd

The whole thing is pretty good if you apply what we know now but particularly the bit starting at 3:50, the discussion of the FISA warrant sign off. Then watch this:

http://tinyurl.com/y7z7y74n

Remember, contra what some have been saying here for over a year we now know that Horowitz was indeed working on FISA abuse the whole time including when this happened. And Rosenstein was NOT the affiant. It was someone else at the FBI. He merely was the last signature that said the document was complete and he welcomed Horowitz' review.

Horowitz is the ultimate straight shooter. He has seen everything. And his focus has been on FISA abuse for the purposes of this report.

JackStraw follows it much more closely than I, so hopefully his insight is right, and Rosie was setting up the bad guys the whole time. Trump himself calls it a coup ... the House went Dem/Commie ... only Trump supporters get the raids ... on and on, bad stuff that happened because Trump under this cloud.

Because you want to be the hero of the story...you want to impress the new boss. because, what the fuck, there would be no consequences. It was like a roller coaster - it was scary and fun because you know nothing bad would actually happen.

That is why we must make sure there are terrible consequences for each and every one of these self-satisfied turds. Comey, Brennan, Hillary, Strozic, Page, all of them. Every last one. Burn their lives to the ground. Make them suffer. Put their heads on pikes as an example to others - this line ye shall not cross. Metaphorically of course. I'm more interested in the process being the punishment, having each of these assholes have to answer question to the FBI, and get prosecuted for lying, repeatedly. make these assholes squirm. make them fork over big bucks for lawyers. The actual punishment doesn't matter - I want their good names ruined. I want admissions of guilt.

And this is not just an example to Democrats, it is to Republicans, it is to everyone.

I can't say this enough. You need to go back and review what was going on in May 2017 when Comey was fired, McCabe took over and opened a criminal investigation into Trump, Rosenstein and Mueller met Trump at the White House and the very next day Rosenstein appointed Mueller and took the investigations, plural, away from McCabe.

If you really want to know what happened, spend some time looking at those things. Or just pretend Trump is an idiot and allowed Rosenstein to try and take him down, left him in place and then invited him to White House parties where he constantly praised him.

if you believe that hillary will win, why go to such lengths and do so much so wrong?

------------

My suspicion: The Muh Russia investigation, as we know it, is just the facade. The surveillance was the point. Don't forget, we that a third-party contractor was given access to the Trump surveillance material, and was called out on it. We still don't know who that third-party contractor was.

It it was Fusion GPS, then you have your answer. This whole charade was an op to give Hillary Clinton real-time info about what the Trump campaign was doing. It IS Watergate, only much much bigger and more intrusive.

The "Insurance Policy" was how to pivot the facade they constructed to be used as a weapon against Trump, should he win. But it wasn't formulated that way, and using it as a torpedo against a Trump presidency wasn't the primary purpose.

It wasn't ever supposed to be known. Hillary, the wicked criminal scum bag that she is, was just covering all her bases.

Here's more food for thought. All that unmasking? What if.... OTHER GOP Presidential candidates ALSO were spied on? Like, all of them.

We, the public, and I suspect congressional investigators also, only know a tiny fraction of WHAT and WHO they surveilled hear. Cowardly public servants STILL are hiding all of that behind the farce of national security and "sources and methods." The end of Mueller only removed the third justified excuse, an "ongoing investigation."

No, there really isn't. With the benefit of hindsight, sure. But not when it was happening in real time when Democrats were threatening to impeach him for farting.

Some people are just too tied to their narrative that Rosenstein is evil and refuse to look at the facts or ignore things that are inconvenient like Barr saying "Rosenstein has done and excellent job" and asking him to stay and help him with the Mueller wind down after he had already retired. Nobody bothers to try and explain the 393957494 level chess behind that if Rosenstein is an evil criminal who somehow has evaded Horowitz' eye.

Occam's Razor is a real thing. The easiest explanation is the obvious one. Rosenstein is not an evil guy and has played this honestly while helping sink the bad guys.

Stopping McCabe and a few other actions, perhaps necessary sacrifices to enable the SC and 2 years of obstruction. No wall built, record high illegal immigration ... this is part of the obstruction, part of the coup ... Occum's Razor says ... Rosie was in on it.

341 "OK, Occam's razor says massive damage was done to Trump and his agenda..."

No, you're conveniently forgetting the context. The alternative to Mueller was never going to be the Trump administration saying "no investigation" and the plotters in Congress politely cooperating with Trump's agenda.

The alternative to Mueller was allowing the cabal, their cronies in Congress, and their media operatives to finally stage the fake Watergate 2.0 Collusion/Obstruction extravaganza they'd been preparing for since Trump's nomination.

A special counsel appointment was a frustrating block, not the goal. It's not what they really needed or wanted but they obviously couldn't say that out loud.

Their plan depended on barrelling through before Trump had his footing. Appointing Mueller diverted them into a runoff lane and stole their momentum. That was the beginning of the end for them.

342 A real investigation of a presidential candidate during an election in the U.S. would start with clear and compelling evidence of wrong doing. The investigation would be all about filling in the details. And such an investigation should be done in the strictest secrecy meaning no leaks to the press. The staff would be of the highest caliber, and would be as non-partisan as humanly possible. The resulting charges would be significant and consequential.

A partisan hack job would launch the investigation on the slimmest of premises, and any and all embarrassing information generated would be immediately leaked to a compliant press. The staff would be unprofessional and highly partisan. The resulting charges would consist predominately of process crimes, people charged with obstruction or lying to the FBI over trivial issues.

Which investigation did we get?
