DVD and Blu-ray sales are dropping.

In its annual Theatrical Home Entertainment Market Environment report, the Motion Picture Association of America described an immensely sharp drop-off of physical media sales over the past five years. According to the data, which was obtained from DEG and IHS Markit, global sales of video disc formats (which in this context means DVD, Blu-ray, and UltraHD Blu-ray) were $25.2 billion in 2014 but only $13.1 in 2018. That's a drop in the ballpark of 50 percent.

Don't expect 8K Blu-rays or other emerging quality-focused formats to turn the tide, either. Market data published by Forbes showed that the aging, low-definition DVD format still accounts for 57.9 percent of physical media sales, and 4K Blu-rays are only 5.3 percent

The Swiss government is completely wrong. Coffee is not essential for life.

The Swiss government wants to put an end to its emergency stockpile of coffee after declaring that it is "not essential" for human survival.

Switzerland began storing emergency reserves of coffee between World War One and World War Two in preparation for potential shortages.

It continued in subsequent decades to combat shortages sparked by war, natural disasters or epidemics.

It now hopes to end the practice by late 2022. But opposition is mounting.

Don't let Bluebell anywhere near tonight's ONT.

If your aim is merely to make something sharp enough that it can cut, you can make a knife out of a whole lot of things. Virtually any sort of metal, to begin with, so long as you have the heat to make it malleable, tools to beat it into shape, and a stone to sharpen the edge. If you want to go further, you can dabble with beer and bacon, or old batteries.

But as Youtuber kiwami japan demonstrates, you can get much, much more extreme with a little bit of basic chemistry knowledge. Say, for instance, you need a knife that can float. Why not just go to town on some styrofoam?

Our society is addicted to social media. Pathetic and oh so sad. Missing account is the same as murder.

A 21-year-old influencer is going viral not for her influence, but for comparing Instagram deleting her account to a “homicide.”

In a video explaining her feelings last week, Jessy Taylor sobbed, calling it a “beg for help” to retrieve her deleted account, where she had more than 100K followers and reportedly posted bikini selfies.

the moose out front should have told you.jpg

The Moose out front should have told you.

How to avoid moose or at least hit them properly.

The implied message is that terrorism isn’t a big deal. But actually, it’s because moose are crazy dangerous to Canadians.
Between 2000 and 2014, 236 Canadians were killed after their car smacked into a moose. Add in collisions with deer, elk, bears, cougars, bison and coyotes, and in the last nineteen years, we’ve lost about as many Canadians to wildlife crashes as died in the Korean War.

If you don’t want to be the next driver killed by a wayward ungulate, follow the tips in the video above to avoid wildlife collisions and, if that fails, how to properly smash your car into majestic Canadian fauna.

Air drying is for dishes and Genius Award Winners. H/T redc1c4

Three naked Florida women told a trooper they were “air drying” at a rest area after showering on Wednesday, but they didn’t stick around to explain much more, troopers said.

As the trooper gathered details at the Interstate 75 northbound rest stop in Pasco County, the women ran to a Nissan Sentra and drove off on the highway around 11 a.m., according to a news release from Florida Highway Patrol. The trooper chased after them but gave up because the pursuit didn’t meet Highway Patrol guidelines, the news release said.

Because it's like, "Why would nature make something that looks like a democrat?" and it turns out that nature is much smarter than we thought. Democrats = things brought out of their usual depth and forced to deal with the world.

PS: Apologies to the blobfish for comparing them to democrats, hopefully they will not eat me tonight as I sleep. Or at least they will do so quietly.

Do this:
Buy some green beans, and learn to roast them.

Go to sweetmarias.com for starters.

In Ethiopia, they just use a flat pan to roast over an open fire. I tried that in an electric frying pan in the kitchen. Don't do that unless you want to test the fire alarms...

his secretary escorted me into the board room and asked me if I would like coffee or water? I answered that I would appreciate a cup of coffee. Right after she left to get the coffee I remembered that I had to get my cholesterol checked that afternoon. I could have had coffee but why mess with it.

313 Home Improvement porn. Yes, I have seen that live.

My 100 year old house needed a kitchen remodel. The cabinetry being solid wood and having no sag to any shelf, did not need replacing but they did need new drawers and doors and refacing. Also a new counter, backsplash and sink.

When the guys came to do it, they were here one day to tear out and start the install and one day to finish it. I sat in the dining room and did what ever the female equivalent of "Fap, Fap, Fap." is. And not because the guys were cute - hell I don't even remember what they looked like. But my kitchen is smokin' hot. Even after 3 years, every time I open the new drawers that I don't need to fight with I get a little tingle of happiness.

Most folks don't know it, but the U.S. Navy has it's own roasting houses, imports it's own specially selected beans, and does 'em to perfection.

That electric Corning perc had a sensor in it which stopped the percolation at the perfect state of "done-ness". It was hot nectar in a USN issue heavy ceramic mug.

Y'all who complain about a percolator, have had the coffee equivalent of a well-done steak.

Stop following the chem-jerk recipe for percolated covfefe!

/break

Backwards Boy has exquisite tastes in beer. Sadly, the bartender at the inside bar did NOT know how to pour a Guinness, and ruined the thing!

And fwiw.... the band that Backwards Boy was playing bass with.... so very good, well-rehearsed, very tight arrangements.

Their lead vocalist could front any band, any time, any where. Dude has an A grade voice and A grade talent.

And Backwards chops on the base, are beyond sublime. The dude will sneak up on you with just how good he really is.

Burger at the place was good, too. No more expensive than the average appetizer, but so much more appealing.

And yeah. I've got a few tons of ancient paperwork that's gotta meet the dumpster bin in the coming week.

More news on the house disposal front is coming though. It might end up less laborsome than I had initially feared.

We have a lot of fun onstage together and I hope that comes across to the audience. Oh, he's also the guitar player for the big show band that comes on after we get through playing.

And Woodstock was the culmination of it." But "I was not a part of that," she explained in an interview. "I was not a part of the anti-war movement, either. I played in Fort Bragg. 375 No burning, no threesome.

But picked up a referral to an Estate Sale operator... did the interview and tour.

These folks are off the top of the OCD chart in how they organize a house and it's belongings and manage the sale.

Sure, they take 1/3. Standard rate in that industry. But they catalog and sell everything, not just select items.

And that 1,000+ LP collection? They research every sleeve, and mark it at current value, not just the usual "$1.00 ea." which is the norm at Estate Sales.

Same with every item. Researched to get the right price.

Their track record, BBB and references are simply outstanding.

All of this means I'm only going to have to plow through ancient paper in the disposal process. Otherwise, they want EVERY thing left in place, to put in the sale.

And they'll handle it all, bring in the shelving (sans Ace), extra tables, staff and security.

Compared to sentencing myself to hard labor, (as bluebell recommends), I can put this thing on cruise control, and let it roll.

Which is exactly what I plan to do.

Insomniac, call me tomorrow all the same. Still got tons of paper to move.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at April 13, 2019 11:32 PM (ASicf)

I don't think they would cite me for that here in Alberta, unless maybe I had been reported weaving down the highway on the riding mower with a beer in my hand, and the cops didn't catch up to me until I had reached my home turf.

I am three miles off the pavement here, and the last time I saw a cop within a mile of my place was when I called them to attend a motor vehicle wreck about a half-mile distant.

A couple of our cabinet doors have warped slightly, over time. It's annoying. I keep thinking that I will make a jig/press, and perhaps leave them out on the porch where the humidity is higher. Non-sold items get donated to Teen Challenge. A drug & crime rehab Christian Charity, which really puts the work in with the young miscreants.

I was gonna donate to Salvation Army, but they get picky n' selective with what they'll take.

Teen Challenge will take it *all*, and leave the house broom-swept, empty and cleaned out, completely.

Means that the next steps with a sale are that much easier.

And one of the neighbors here (a very high end commercial roofing contractor) is anxious to haggle a price. If I can get damn close to my intended price, I'll do it.

'Cause with no seller's or buyer's brokers, just meeting to sign papers at the title company, my situation just improved by nearly $20k, by not paying realtor's commissions.

/break

Finally, gun thread.

Any of you know how rare a Norwegian Krag Carbine is in it's original 6.5x55 chambering?

VERY DAMN RARE is how rare.

And I just bought one today at about 1/5 of it's collector's value. Local gun store did NOT realize what they had on the shelf.

431 The way DUI laws have been extended and stretched and contorted and perverted is crazy.

The Oregon legislature, in an extremely rare act of reasonableness, just refused to lower the maximum permitted blood alcohol level from .08 to .05.

Under Oregon law, you already can be arrested for being impaired, no matter what your blood alcohol level (after all, a lot of things can impair you other than alcohol), but the virtue signalers thought that they could show how virtuous they were, by formally criminalizing low levels of alcohol consumption.

The ZTR does very poorly on sidehills, as in when I mow my ditches. The front wheels are casters, so they always want to roll down the slope, so I wind up having to dial in full forward on the downslope rear wheel, and neutral or even slow reverse on the upslope one. Sometimes, I just leave a strip, and do it in two passes with a walk-behind mower.

New York, too, I think. Only a total asshole would even try to make such a law. They did it because your car might get stolen .... as if that's the state's friggin business, anyway. next they'll be checking your front door to make sure locked it and then coming in to make sure you are tucked into bed properly. I hate these fvckers ... and I say "hate" only to begin to try express the disgust and disdain I have for them.

And the funny part about the car thing is that a lot of cars have a feature that lets you turn the car on from inside so it'll be warmed up by the time you get to it outside.

475 4 20 -- pdqsteve -- Yup. My house was built in 1900. I've got the abstract to prove it. It's an up and down duplex converted into a single dwelling. The cabinet in the upstairs kitchen matches the one in the downstairs exactly which is why I am pretty certain they were installed at the same time the house was built. It was rental property up until maybe the '60s so you know nobody bestirred themselves to replace the cabinets.

I have damn all for closets, too. Back then, a woman had four dresses: one for every day winter, one for church on Sunday, one for every day summer, and one for church on Sunday. The husband's pants and shirts were kept in the dresser drawers.

If I outlive the livestock, we are selling this white elephant and moving to a one floor apartment. I dream of the day when I have not only a ball closet, but even the hallway to go with it.

As I wrote that, I suddenly realized that this house is built like a New Orleans "shotgun house". The front door opens straight into the front room, followed immediately by the dining room, followed by the kitchen. The big bedroom is directly off the dining room, and both the second bedroom and the bathroom are directly off the kitchen. No hallway any where.I think the bathroom was carved out of the second bedroom when indoor plumbing was introduced. I'm sure there was an out house originally because of all the brickwork I discovered when I tried to plant a bush in the back yard. There had to have been a brick walkway from the back door to the out house.

The casters have a stems of about 5/8" diameter that go through vertical bushings on the frame. Washers top and bottom, the bottom one being welded to the stem to take the thrust load (weight).

Weld a thin steel serpentine belt pulley to each washer; pulleys source from accessory drive off car in wrecking yard. Wrap a belt around them, anchor middle of one run of the belt, and rig a pedal to pull the ohter side tight as required. Presto: external-contracting band brakes to lock front casters in whatever position they are at the time the pedal is depressed.

482 When you look at cable, the shows are better than broadcast - writing, direction, and production values are all markedly better, across the board. No exceptions. The biggest shortfall from what I can see is in the acting. The actors on network shows are just fucking abominable by comparison to cable/streaming shows. A joke, really.

Yet, network shows have budgets 3-4 times higher than their cable/streaming counterparts.

How is it possible for them to suck so bad with so much money? I think if you gave NBC $50 billion dollars, they still couldn't produce a single episode of a one hour drama on par with, say, The Sopranos or The Wire or Breaking Bad.

499 logprof, IMHO the networks are hopelessly stuck in ruts that they've been in since the 1980s. They've become ridiculously averse to any kind of risk or dong anything at all that would cause them or their programming to 'stick out' in any way.

HBO and other cable channels don't really have that problem because (a) they're still fairly new with regard to providing original programming, (b) it's well established already that their programming is "anything goes," outside of straight pron; and people are actually paying to see their programs, which IMHO puts a bit more pressure on both the networks and the producers/writers to provide something that's quality.

There hasn't been a new network show in years that I've taken any interest in. I think the only exception is "Mom," and even that is very hit-or-miss. I would love to see one of the networks try something new; they've been promising the world and delivering next to nothing for years and years now; but I just don't see it happening. They're very comfortable in their rut.

Thanks to four kids and their friends almost all of our windows now are the thick, clear plastic. There was some blood shed as we gradually moved from glass to plastic, but only one major gusher. (Racing out the door, middle son missed the handle and shoved his hand and arm through the pane of glass. It worked out okay, though. The XO found a thick modern piece of glass to replace the old multi-pane door insert, and he sand blasted an Art Deco peacock into the new one before he installed it. 538 logprof, right. Same with the Bond flicks.

When an old story is done over and over again by REALLY talented people, it can work. But House's people, while very talented, IMHO didn't have the moxie to pull it off was long as they tried.

If House had quit as soon as it got to its 100 episodes for syndication, I think it would be far better and more fondly remembered.

545 499 -- I found one new show this year: God Friended Me. It has its SJW moments, but the lead character's father is a smart, respected church minister. Personally, I am one step short of being an athiest, but the scorn and hatred poured on Christianity by my betters annoys me to no end. I really like the fact that Christianity and true faith are not mocked or ridiculed in this show. I have no idea how that slipped past the left wing censors, but I suspect that because the main character and his family are black, his sister is gay, his best friend is dot Indian, and the lead character is madly in love with a melanin-challenged woman offset the drawback of showing Christianity in a positive light.

Also, I could be very wrong but M*A*S*H I think attracted new viewers year after year as it kept going, while other viewers faded away. I discovered it when I was 12 years old, when it had already been on the air for 6 years, and only took an interest in older episodes after its run ended in 1983.

(BTW, I think I also remember that by the time its final episode aired, M*A*S*H was constantly being pre-empted by other shows CBS wanted to promote, so it wasn't as if people could see it confidently so much.)

Ralph Matthew McInerny (February 24, 1929 - January 29, 2010)[1] was an American author and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. McInerny's most popular mystery book series featured Father Dowling.[2] This character was the basis for the Father Dowling Mysteries television show, which ran from 1987 to 1991.

Father Brown is a fictional Roman Catholic priest and amateur detective who is featured in 53 short stories published between 1910 and 1936 written by English novelist G. K. Chesterton.[1] Father Brown solves mysteries and crimes using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature. Chesterton loosely based him on the Rt Rev. Msgr. John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.

Hollywood imposed the Code on itself to avoid government imposition. Some of the pre-Code movies were getting as racy as anything today, and that caused scandal.

Believe or not, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment did not apply to motion pictures! After that ruling, Hollywood came up with the Code itself.

A later Court ruling overturned that of course.

Antigone used the metaphor of the tree that survived by giving a little way to the stiff breeze, rather than completely resisting it.
