The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"With progressives fighting an all-out campaign to censor, silence, and de-platform every conservative voice, I don't think there's one of them who has ever considered that such efforts are going to bite them in the ass. In fact, I think it's biting them on the ass already. Because by shutting themselves inside their hermetically sealed little bubbles, they're getting to the point where they can't even begin to comprehend the huge amount of thought and evidence out there that completely opposes the progressive view. They've declared war on us, but if they're going to fight, they need a winning strategy. And a crucial part of any war strategy is intelligence, i.e. accurate assessment of the enemy's intentions and capabilities. But by insisting on scorched-earth deplaforming of conservatives, the progressives have willfully shut down all of their intelligence gathering capabilities in the real world, and they now only inhabit some screwball fantasy world. Normal Americans don't have that problem. We're saturated by the progressive take on things 24/7 from virtually every media and entertainment outlet available. We know everything they think, everything they believe, and all of their weaknesses -- and strengths, too. But the progressives have up-armored their bubble to the point where it's pretty much impenetrable. They have no idea why we think what we think, all they can do is call it racist or something-something-phobic or some other slur and that's the extent of their interaction with us. So they will never see the real world consequences (cough)Venezuela(cough) coming at them like a speeding freight train. A few years ago, I saw an interview with the Duck Dynasty guy Phil Robertson and he was asked about how he successfully managed to work with Hollywood. He summed up the reason for his success by observing, 'We know who they are. They have no idea who we are.' I think that's true of progressives in general. It's not a surprise that progressives have been acting more and more unhinged, so much so that it looks like at least some of them need psychiatric help. Yes, I know a lot of that is industrial-strength TDS, but I think there's more to it than that. Even without Trump, the progressives are literally losing touch with the real world. Trump is just accelerating the process. Watching CNN or MSNBC is like getting a glimpse into Bizarro-World. What the progressives need right now is a sane, rational Democrat who is courageous enough to stand athwart the progressive crazy train, face down the lunatic mob and holler 'STOP!'"

65 Great rant, thanks OM (and by extension Tom Servo!)

This is a screenshot I grabbed late last night after I did a Google search for 'Unplanned'. About an hour later, the 'propaganda' label disappeared. I would really like to hear Google's explanation for this.

The thing that interests me most about this is what I saw in the screenshot. I didn't initially see the tag for "Drama/Propaganda" because it is in Google's normal low-contrast gray-on-white format. I didn't see it until I read your comment.

What I did see were the scores. Rotten Tomatoes, an industry aggregator, has it at 48%. IMDB, which is full of industry types and real people, is a bit higher at 63%. Facebook, which is an odd duck but probably real people and at least a plurality of them are ideologically aligned, has it at 98%.

This was what I originally though the "Propaganda" heading meant - that the industry has one view and people have another and the industry is trying like the devil to shove it down people's throats. It wasn't until I went back and reread it that I saw that Google had formally classified it as propaganda. It almost doesn't matter. The score distribution tells you all you need to know.

134 Redford and Newman. Great pic of them.

Redford is a enviro goof, but he set up Sundance in a way that , IMO, is better than most of the western "resorts". He actually is preserving the area, in that 5,000 of the 6,000 acres of the ranch are permanently set aside from development. So many of the resorts out west continue to open and sell "homesites" of five or ten acres to rich clients for a second home, shrinking the "wilderness' aspect of the resort until eventually, it's a home development with a small equestrian center, and all the pools, yoga studios, etc. you might find in a high end development in the East. They destroy a viable cattle ranch, or hunting area for rich enclaves.

At least Redford has avoided doing that.

But overlooking that, I will always think that the ending is one of the most poignant, and well done endings of any movie in that genre. You like the characters; you don't want to see them die; and yet you know they have to. It's expressed in a way that could never be improved on.

We're talking about adults here, but don't forget about the kids. Young people are naturally inclined toward Leftism, and it is constantly, strongly reinforced by teachers... It's a non-stop drumbeat. If you march to the beat you are rewarded, and if you deviate from the rhythm you are punished. By the time most kids are in HS, they instinctively follow the beat.

If you happen to be a natural dissenter, intellectually dominating them is trivial, even for a child against an adult in school... They've never learned to think. They've never even heard a new idea before.

It's one of the things I find so aberrant, disturbing and disgusting about the millennials. Rebellion and free-thinking are natural features of young people in free societies, and they appear to be completely missing them.

Easy Rider was kind of what started the trend, not a conscious decision to try and take advantage of the trend.

It cost no money and made a bunch.

They then gave Hopper a few million dollars to go to Peru to make The Last Movie, which was an incomprehensible mess and Hopper never really went on to become a poster boy for directors of New Hollywood (like Coppola, Scorsese, and de Palma).

177 there are a lot of Hollywood movies that glamorize crime ... especially bank robbers, the alleged victimless crime -- Butch and Sundance were so nice.

The shadow oligarchs find plenty of characters that love riches and glamor, and are willing to do the crime. Butch and Sundance went down ... BUT, they went down fighting and trying to kill the good guys that came for them. They were killers. DeepState will be (has been) the same ... willing to destroy good guys and sacrifice a couple underlings, more dangerous when cornered. So let's get this indictment party started ... liberty hangs in the balance.

A while back, either the online dictionaries made the move, or google starting upping the appearance of "right-wing" definitions listed for fascism.

Look at a variety of them, about half list "right-wing" as an essential feature of fascism. OED does as well, but lists this as a historical marker for when the term began in use, mostly.

So progs skip over the parts of the definition of state-control, etc. and equate fascism with "right-wing."

I've had this exact discussion with a reasonable lib. I don't know if the lesson took hold.

Fascism was itself an outgrowth of socialist ideology. Hitler and Mussolini were both quoted as describing themselves as socialists, and claiming their form was purer than Stalin's. The left's attempts to distance themselves from it is an attempt to obscure their connection to it. They ain't much different at all.

The idea that a "national socialist German worker's party" was a right wing organization is the lie of the century.

239 I've noticed that with a lot of 60's movies. Film studios were dealing with films in the post studio system era. They said, "The kids have all the disposable income. Let's make films the kids like. By kid directors." Case in point: Easy Rider. Suuuucccckkkk. Good soundtrack, but shitty movie.

Posted by: Anonymous White Male at April 12, 2019 11:33 AM (3sjI6)

There's only a handful of 60's movie that are really watchable anymore. (Bullitt is one, Thomas Crown Affair another - OK anything with Steve McQeen in it) But most of them tried to be "experimental" and ended up being crap. On TCM the other night "The Party" with Peter Sellers was on; supposed to be "good" I watched it once, and all I could say was that I guess it was as good as a movie that never even pretended to have anything close to a plot could have. It was an hour and a half of people show up at a house, they wander around and say random stuff. The End.

243 Fascism was itself an outgrowth of socialist ideology.

And the funniest part of all is that people who've actually been in small market hockey teams say that, even though it's parody, it's more true to life on that subject than anything else ever put to film.

My dad talks about his childhood of being poor and having to help with his siblings but seems to have a fairly balanced perspective on things good and bad (though I am obviously biased, having been steeped in his perspective). It might be the difference between being resentful and not. I don't know. I have had a generally good life and good parents, for which I am eternally grateful.

277 Damn, that is a good rant. It needs a bit of context, though. You see, that kind of complete media discipline- which includes most of Fox News- is only possible under tyranny. Between the sale of American media, Instapundit being bought out by Salem, prosecuting Cambridge Analytica yet not Facebook, making pro-life movie tickets harder to get than an actual abortion, banning Infowars- the media tyranny is becoming increasingly frantic.

But the problem is, when you have a media ecosystem based entirely on lies as we did during the Iraq War- often staffed by many of the same neocon liars- anyone offering truth will be successful. By economic standards Donald Trump is impossibly successful, and is on track to beat even a bullshit 16 million jobs created by Obama (which is actually closer to 8 million, and required preposterous stimulus).

Right now, it is Trump. You really want to see what happens if a talented demagogue exploits the raw fury of 30 million betrayed nationalists, Mr. Kristol?

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at April 12, 2019 11:39 AM (uquGJ)

Well, basically all you "have to" do is point and click. Point and click on the "download image" button on the website for the Linux distro of choice, and then point and click to write it to a DVD.

But you need to find a computer geek to do it for you. Should not be too hard. After all, you will need a working computer with internet access in order to get the image file in the first place. If the failed computer doesn't have a DVD drive, then the distro will have to go onto a memory stick, and the laptop made to boot from that.

This is what always fascinates me about the "Trump is literally Hitler!" crowd. Trump has the level of charisma necessary to actually pull that off. People willing to go to those extremes for him are not a majority, but are probably a large enough plurality to win. I think one of the reasons that he isn't Hitlerian is that he doesn't want to be and doesn't think it's right.

They should be thanking G-d every day that he *isn't* "literally Hitler." If they keep poking this bear, they might just get one. If you're damned if you do or damned if you don't, some people will lose patience.

Yeah the ones that are good are really good but there was a host of awful stuff back then. 70s had a better overall quality level but are painfully dated. Because they are godless and don't even have the vocabulary to understand a worldview that includes the Imago Dei.

One could sit down and patiently explain a non-nihilistic worldview, but there is no ability to process the abstract concept of transcendence. They can't possibly understand that "marriage" transcends their Now, and was defined and enjoyed by billions of people since the dawn of history - they don't understand that they have no authority to alter it.

Dittos with Rights. They can't process the concept of Rights because their vocabulary lacks the words and definitions and the ability to frame ideas of value that transcend their Now.

The list is endless of concepts that they couldn't understand because the ability to internally process these worldview exceeds their experience and development of individual sovereignty.

They have no concept of the idea that "Rights" are those things which you have whether the Government likes it or not. Can a bad Government violate your rights? It always fails because they're cultists that are incapable of honest self-examination.

Socialism, for instance, has a singular, central, fatal flaw that's easy to articulate.

In the pursuit of material equality, it seeks wealth redistribution.

The only way to make redistribution work is to give a government agency control over all material wealth.

A small group that controls all of the wealth is the definition of aristocracy.

Creating an aristocracy in the name of any kind of equality is contradictory and self-defeating.

Most Leftists are smart enough to realize this, but too damn pig-headed to honestly examine their derply held beliefs.

Posted by: Cato, Media Delenda Est at April 12, 2019 12:05 PM (J+mig)

394 Nor can I imagine a way they can recapture what they once had.

First step is a hiatus. And not a short one. Thinking 15 years. It worked for Star Trek through the 70s.

Second is keeping the story volume low - over saturation killed Star Trek in the 90s and Star Wars now. Only so many stories you can really tell in these franchises, so keep supply low.

Third is good old fashioned story quality. The franchises are inherently limited (Star Wars requires TIE fighters and lightsabers, Star Trek requires reversing the polarity of something or other), so ditch the SJW crap and stop trying to make it high minded drama.

None of that will happen.

==========

I have two Trek show ideas.

1) Set in the last days of the first Romulan War, a crippled captain is given an older ship by an admiral who feels that Starfleet has lost its sense of purpose in the war. The ship travels in a completely new direction (if you look at canon maps, there's a surprising amount of space in one direction that isn't explored). Through the first season, they don't meet a single alien. They have to contend with the vast cosmic horrors of being puny humans in the face of infinity.

2) Set hundreds of years after the fall Starfleet. The galaxy is ruled by some kind of Klingon Empire that has squashed out all memory of Starfleet. A young human finds remnants in a cave, including a shuttlecraft, and begins a rebellion with the ideals he gleans from the incomplete records he has found.

457 394 Nor can I imagine a way they can recapture what they once had.

Posted by: WitchDoktor, as if anyone gives a shit at April 12, 2019 12:05 PM (tVWQB)

The awesome thing about a cinematic universe that the people making them don't seem to realize is that it lets you tell a bunch of different kinds of stories without having to explain to the audience the backstory.

You can make a war movie about WWII without having to explain to the audience why we should care about defeating the Germans. Everyone knows that the Nazis are the bad guy.

If you want to make a war movie set in space, you either have to spend half the movie explaining the two sides of the conflict, which limits your storytelling options for the actual plot, or you can just set it in an IP like Star Wars or Star Trek.

Nobody seems to be doing that, though. Rogue 1 was the only sort of movie that was it's own thing. Solo went back to the same characters we've seen before (though to it's credit, tried to be a heist movie). And the rest of the movies are just following the same characters.

Instead of using a cinematic universe to tell different stories in unique ways, they're just using it to tell one big long action movie that people are eventually going to get bored with.

458 I have two Trek show ideas.

1) Set in the last days of the first Romulan War, a crippled captain
is given an older ship by an admiral who feels that Starfleet has lost
its sense of purpose in the war. The ship travels in a completely new
direction (if you look at canon maps, there's a surprising amount of
space in one direction that isn't explored). Through the first season,
they don't meet a single alien. They have to contend with the vast
cosmic horrors of being puny humans in the face of infinity.

2) Set hundreds of years after the fall Starfleet. The galaxy is
ruled by some kind of Klingon Empire that has squashed out all memory of
Starfleet. A young human finds remnants in a cave, including a
shuttlecraft, and begins a rebellion with the ideals he gleans from the
incomplete records he has found.

This one really bugs me. Both Chrome and Firefox do this. If you navigate to an SSL-secured page that has an invalid certificate (this happens a lot on the LAN, though not on the internet), it reports an "insecure connection."

Insecure about what? Its finances? Its well being? Being a good dad?

It isn't an "insecure connection" it is an "unsecured connection" or, more accurately an "untrusted or unverified secure connection."

This makes me mad a couple of times a day.

They dropped Hee Haw, Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Wild, Wild West, and others. It was quite a massacre.

Yeah. The whole canon is messed up. IIRC, the First Romulan War was fought with impulse only drives, so we were out in space before the invention of the warp drive by Zeferan Cochran.

It has always seemed to me that Vulcan and Romulus were close to our system, also wherever the blue guys with the antennas come from. The Klingons were from further away and independently developed the space warp.

"

I have explained this before, having been inside the sausage factory; there is little or no individual accountability, from an electronic standpoint, except for things that Google cares about (monitoring external storage devices, for example). Individual employees have a massive amount of power at their fingertips, and they use it regularly to do stuff like this. They do it openly and nobody stops them - or even disapproves, if they want to keep their job.

Most of this isn't top-down. Stuff like their manual search-jiggery teams are relatively recent.
