57 In ancient Pergammon, the city raised a monument to their victory over the Gauls. But unlike typical Greek images of defeated enemies, the Pergammese (Pergmmonians?) depicted the Gauls is idealized, heroic warriors, honorable and worthy adversaries. One of the group is a chieftain killing his wife to save her from capture and enslavement by the Greeks. I posted the link up top, but here it is again.

This is probably the biggest reason I could never be a Socialist. They believe in the perfectibility of the species. After reading a ton of history, and learning of the butchery of Man century after century, with most of the savagery happening less than 100 years ago, I do not believe Man is perfectible. In fact, I may be beginning to believe that Man is getting worse.

Why do you think history is getting less important in public education?

Why don't kids read Greek drama anymore?

I swear, reading Sophocles (on my own) opened my eyes to how we really haven't changed in 3,000 years.

If we haven't significantly changed in millennia despite the advances in knowledge, mores, morals, and technology, then we're never going to change without some kind of intervention that stops us from being human.

119 I'm not familiar with the artist but am impressed. He has captured the story with dark colors: the smoke, the deep reds of distant fire, the shadows cast by the burning buildings, against the white of the wife's breast. With the dark image of the dead horse, the painting could have been titled "The Last Stand" or "Failed Escape". It's a powerful depiction of desperate courage and tragedy worthy of Shakespeare or Homer.

The irony of it all is that man is getting worse because of the increasing belief in the perfectability of the species. It was an animating factor of the French revolution and every radical revolution since - a belief that if you just tear out the old system root and branch, and hold a gun to people's heads for long enough, they'll forget their old habits* and be perfect.

They don't give a fuck. Recently I had to take a drug test for a client. Which is annoyingly happening more and more these days, especially if the company does any bidness with the feds.

Anyway, I go in to the lab the company does all its screening though. They ask me to fill out this 2 page form including my SSN, DOB, all sorts of shit. I say, you don't need all this for me to take a piss test. The clerk says I need all this to fill into my computer. So I say fine I'm going to give you my name and phone number and everything else is made up.

And lo and behold it did not affect the lab's ability to analyze my pee. This is the root of the problem. 90% of the data corps have on people is not needed. Also see medical providers who will never fucking get my SSN into their database no matter how many times they tell me the computer needs it.

It's gone clear on into magical thinking. It's cargo cult politics.

It's gone clear on into magical thinking. It's cargo cult politics.

228 When a scammer tried to get Sen. Cory Gardner's staffer to provide personal credit card details over the phone, they soon found they had called the wrong place.

Gardner, R-Colo., is part of a bipartisan group of senators tackling illegal robocalls. His staffer quickly recorded the call, which was spoofed to look like it was coming from an internal Senate number.

Gardner, who sits on the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet, played a snippet of the call Thursday during a hearing to discuss the havoc robocalls wreak on millions of Americans each day.

"The card number you said?" the staffer asked on the recording Gardner played. "Okay, just so you know, you just called the United States Senate line and this is being recorded and we know that this is an instance of fraud."

"Oh," the scammer said on the recording.

"Now I stopped it there because the next words have probably never been entered into the Congressional record before," Gardner said to the committee as he was met with laughs.

279 The painting depicts an event in Hungary from the early 1500s.

My namesake gramps graduated NYU in 1906, and having learned to speak German in school, went to Europe to soak in the culture, ending up in Hungary for two and a half years, where he became fluent in the language. Hungarian is not a germanic or romance language, is more Finnish than anything.

Gramps taught English there to make a living, and subscribed his whole life to a Budapest newspaper and one from Germany. I have his Phi Beta Kappa key.

He married a couple years after getting back to New Jersey, and taught high school chemistry his whole career time. A number of his students stayed in touch with him his whole life.

Gramps was a classically-trained pianist, and I can still hear, in my imagination, him playing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody. We had his piano in the summer camp for fifty years, an upright Knabe, and finally had to scrap it just a couple years ago. We kept the whole key set and the cast iron lyre.

The time he spent there must have been pretty idyllic, small villages, farms, beautiful countryside, gypsy camps, all the rest. Gramps was an amateur photographer and I have a whole box of his glass negatives from the period.

Military force numbers for 2017:
Army Active: 472,047

Navy Active: 319,492
USAF Active: 318,580
Army Reserve: 219,054

USAF Guard: 105,670
USMC Reserve: 104,417
Navy Reserve: 103,660
USAF Reserve: 99,269
USCG Active: 40,600
USCG Reserve: 7,857

Grand Total Active: 1,335,120
Grand Total Non-Active: 639,927

Each car company could sell 250k 'subsidized by us' units (regardless of model); afaik Tesla is the only company to reach that number of all electric sales. So their subsidy is kaput.

But wait, there's more -- CA has proposed throwing their own subsidy on; dunno status, probably still looking for the right chicken to skin.

And if you act right now -- Our cocksucking Congresscritters have a 'bipartisan' bill start a NEW subsidy program, because darn it the deficit just ain't big enough yet. The onliest thingy both sides can agree on; blow moar dough.

388 So the city of Chicago has filed a lawsuit against Jussie Smollett to collect on the $135,000 they spent investigating his hate crime hoax that their prosecutor dropped all charges.

So how do you sue a resident for investigating a crime the resident reported of whom all charges have been dismissed? If I report a crime and the police spend time and effort to investigate, and I am not charged with false reporting, why am I liable for costs? Isn't investigating possible crimes part of why the police are paid by taxpayers?

yes, I know it's Chicago, but I don't see this as a slam dunk against Smollett the way a lot of sites are reporting this. In fact, because the charges were dropped, I don't believe the lawsuit has merit.

The gear box was like shifting a bulldozer. Like the fiberglass body but the rest kind of sucked. I lived in HI at the time and rust is an issue. At the same time a real winner was available - the Isuzu Trooper. Light, peppy, great visibility and low cost. Of course they fucked that up by the 1990s.

But then, it's Tul. And steel case. Have you fired this ammo before? If your pistol is happy with it, not an awful deal. I get about 10% FTF with it.

The difference between the left and right these days basically boils down to this:

The right sees the world as it is, then tries to build the best society it can with the people and tools it has.

The left imagines a world that could be, then tries to build perfection with flawed materials, then wonders why it never works.

Well, scarcely anybody wants a "fairly recent" Bentley. They are ugly, ugly cars. And certain years of Jaguar also go for pennies at auctions. Saw one knocked down at the Silver Auction in Ft. McDowell for four hundred dollars. The auctioneer stopped his spiel, and told the buyer: "Remember, you can have it if you promise never to bring it here for sale again." Big laugh from the crowd. Well, basically all you "have to" do is point and click. Point and click on the "download image" button on the website for the Linux distro of choice, and then point and click to write it to a DVD.

But you need to find a computer geek to do it for you. Should not be too hard. After all, you will need a working computer with internet access in order to get the image file in the first place. If the failed computer doesn't have a DVD drive, then the distro will have to go onto a memory stick, and the laptop made to boot from that.
