The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

One of the many failings of the Republican party has been its embrace of big business at the expense of the rule of law. Special tax breaks for individual companies, onerous regulation that favors large over small, and a host of other behaviors, all bought and paid for by lobbyists and the Chamber of Commerce and industry groups have conspired to penalize average Americans and small business that is one of the primary drivers of growth in our economy.

The most obvious and disgusting example is the desire of the captive Republican party to open the Southern floodgates and allow unfettered immigration while also giving permanent status to the 10s of millions already here illegally, all in the name of depressing wages and contorting the labor market.

But this is pretty vomit-inducing too. That the IRS doesn't already have simple on-line systems that would allow most Americans to calculate and file their taxes is a pathetic reflection of the stupidity and sloth of government. Add in the craven and corrupt desire of Congress to protect its donor class and we have this ridiculous bill.

Congress Is About to Ban the Government From Offering Free Online Tax Filing. Thank TurboTax.

Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee, led by Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., passed the Taxpayer First Act, a wide-ranging bill making several administrative changes to the IRS that is sponsored by Reps. John Lewis, D-Ga., and Mike Kelly, R-Pa.

In one of its provisions, the bill makes it illegal for the IRS to create its own online system of tax filing. Companies like Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, and H&R Block have lobbied for years to block the IRS from creating such a system. If the tax agency created its own program, which would be similar to programs other developed countries have, it would threaten the industry’s profits.

“This could be a disaster. It could be the final nail in the coffin of the idea of the IRS ever being able to create its own program,” said Mandi Matlock, a tax attorney who does work for the National Consumer Law Center.

Ignoring the disgusting corruption...creating an IRS filing system would hold accountable the most unaccountable department in the federal leviathan. Imagine getting a letter from the IRS claiming back taxes, and being able to show that their own system generated the original data. Delicious!

It is this kind of obvious, blatant and unrepentant unscrupulousness that destroys faith in government. Populism is becoming more and more attractive! Maybe a new term is in order...something that encompasses abhorrence of corporatism in the Republican (and...let's be honest, the Democrat) party and the desire to protect and defend our borders, our culture and the ideals of our government.

National Populism?

I call it Americanism. I'm not a nationalist in most senses, especially any ethnic sense, but I want what's best for the American nation.

I want laws that benefit everyone, not just the wealthy, the strong, and the popular. I want laws that benefit everyone that puts on pants and puts in an honest day's work, and land on the liars, cheaters, swindlers, grifters, and kleptocrats like a ton of bricks.

This isn't some scary new-fangled thing that gets a special name, it's the ideology that turned this nation into a superpower.

And it's still the newest thing in all of human relations - this idea that us "common folk" can decide what is best for ourselves without the guidance of some small clique in a distant capitol.

Government imposes choices at the point of a gun, while business relies on voluntary transactions. Where business goes wrong is when it lobbies government to eliminate their competition, thus reducing the choice of the consumer. So, in this case as well, it is government involvement that disrupts the market.

Government is sometimes a necessary evil, but it is always evil.

74 The differences is, the Right trusts Rule of Law.

the Left does NOT. they want "rule by men" not a set law for all

so of course they are now all pro-gov! they have captured it

it took us a while to accept that our gov is corrupt to the extent that we must abandon (temporarily/situationally) a belief in Rule of Law.

So let's work to get back to it, because otherwise it's basically back to feudalism (which we're nearly at right now)

The agent I spoke to (in a nice plushy office, btw) after looking at things said, "Mr. Hammer, my best advice is that you hire an accountant."

Absolutely. This is the only good reason to have an accountant do your taxes - and it's a damned good reason.

If some bloodthirsty chiseler at the IRS decides to pull your card, the accounting firm deals with the bullshit, and keeps you out of the pokey. If you do it yourself, you get to enter mutual combat with an army of soulless bureaucrats with an indefatigable will to squeeze you for every bit of money you'll make over the next ten years.

I agree.

Frankly, I think corporate taxes should just... go away. They distort the market too much, there's no good way to reconcile GAAP accounting and easy tax filing, and they ultimately are just another "stealth" tax on consumers.

Personal income taxes should be done in as straight forward a way possible. I'd be willing to trade our current system of welfare and tax credits and tax rebates and all that nonsense for Milton Friedman's negative income tax, too.

Up to, say, 20k of income is exempt from taxation for everyone -- if you earn under $20k, you get a 50% "negative" tax rate. Anything above $20k you pay a flat rate of 20% or whatever (someone would have to run the numbers.)

Should be easy enough to do your taxes in 10-20 minutes with a calculator on the IRS's webpage.

My only complaint with Intuit, et al is some of the anti-Second Amendment things they've done and the thievery with their pricing, to the point of false advertising. Free, Free, Free? Not so fast. Need to file a certain form? Sorry that requires an upgrade? Need to file a K-1. Sorry that ANTHER upgrade. File in multiple states? Sorry, that's another charge. F them.

230 It's hard to say, but I estimate somewhere around a quarter of people actually believe in the Russian Collusion Dolchstosslegende.

It's hard to see how anyone could believe it, but some do. I think part of it is down to the media. If you live in a deep blue citadel like I do, you never really meet any conservatives, and those you do meet don't talk about it, because the REEEEEEE noises are really annoying.

If you add to that the fact 100% of the media you see, hear and read is far-Left, I think for the thought-impaired among the Democrat voters, it leads to the impression that it's mathematically impossible for Trump to have been elected legitimately.

232 Okay, I've been reading a lot of conservatives upset about this IRS thing.

I'm not sure they're looking at this the right way. Right now, I use TurboTax for my filing. As a small contractor, I file a Schedule C. The tax laws are a frigging nightmare, and the program is immensely complex, but the interface is very simple and easy. Questions are asked, and answered, and the tax program does the rest. There are things in there you wouldn't believe, but the program fields it. I'm one guy working out of his house, and my filing, printed out, is fifty-one pages long.

I pay much less than I would an accountant, and the whole thing is under my control.

Reading the article, I think this is more complex than just "Big Tax keeps government from giving us free stuff," but whatever.

All I know is that I picked a company from several competitors, and their business depends on being able to do the best job of keeping my own money.

I find it hard to believe that the government that receives that money is going to be equally motivated to keep my tax bill low. Never mind the issue of them producing a system as effective as the one I'm using.

Their plan is to go (digitally) wherever PDJT gives a speech or has a rally, and bombard people with tallies of promises made but not kept. What the DNC does not understand is that everyone knows this President would gladly have kept every promise, but the Democrats won far too many battles. 323 When private industry lobbies Congress to prevent the government from providing a pretty basic service, then we have a problem. The issue is not whether the IRS will do a good job (they won't). The issue is the corruption inherent in the decision.

Killing anyone with a negative score on Zeke Emmanuel's

350 Sorry, but I gotta say on this one: HOW STUPID ARE YOU?

You want the people who won't even guarantee their answers directly related to your exact tax situation will keep you out of jail to offer up filing services? WTF??? The filing services out there make their money by actually helping you through the falderol and Rube Goldberg tax laws to figure out which forms you need and which things you should and which you need not file. They help you figure out if itemizing is better for your bottom line. Will the IRS do that - reliably, honestly and in my favor - for me? F*cking h*ll no, they won't.

BTW, every single tax filing service I know of will let you file an EZ for **FREE**. They don't make a dime off that. And, the only reason to use a tax service for an EZ is so you can easily file electronically. And that's already FREE.

The IRS won't even give you a nice clean shot to finding PDF forms so you can print and fill them in yourself. They have zero links to case law and other helps to interpreting their regulations and the law. (I used to buy the books - HR Block and such - back before the walk-through electronic filing became solid.)

You are probably right about the tax software companies raising barriers to entry. But the idea of letting the IRS handle your form-filling and filing directly has to be one of the stupider this century. Until they reform the system and reduce the regulations, loopholes, and gotchas to a level that at least their own people can give you an answer that guarantees you won't go to jail for following their advice, ain't no way I'd let them handle my return.

Sykes, who I believe is still a serial cheater and hates his children too, wrote a Voxsplainer entitled "Seven Reasons Not To Trust Barr"

317 Let's say an average looking girl goes on an average of 2 tinder dates a week for a year. Sleeps with, say 75% of the guys she "grabbed drinks" with.

Thats 78 sex partners. In one year.

...and I don't think that number is super exaggerated for women on tinder, either.

355 285 So Trump tweeted out that the Battleground poll had him at 55% approval and the director of the poll had to respond that he's wrong and the correct number is 43%?!?!?!
Posted by: david venable at April 11, 2019 11:57 AM (9ogIP)

See! Trump is a liar! OK, he didn't actually lie, he left off the word "economy". So, he lied by omission! Unlike the Gay Mulatto, who lied directly to your face. He had so much more integrity. Oh, for a return to Administrations that are scandal free!

No, actually, Trump also showed the 58% approval on the economy next to the very far-off 55% general approval number

Yeah. And condoms seem very optional with every girl I've ever met on one of those sites (or in person.)

In fact, the last two girls I was with were taken aback when I pulled out a condom. Like "ohh, okay. Sure."

Yeah, I'd personally like to avoid getting STD's from some chick I had 3 drinks with and don't know at all if possible.

Absolutely concur. "Capitalism" as described by Marx is based on a feudal system turning to markets. We have had actual free markets in America, and (until recently*) haven't had a "landed class" and serfs and such.
(* Yes, with the exception of slavery, which never should have existed in America, was a blight on our original ideals, and we fought a damned bloody war to end.)

362 303 Would you like to hear some blue state 2A stuff? It will make you feel better about where you live.

I submitted my pistol permit application, together with $200 of various fees and proof of the $130 NRA safety course, on 28 August, year last.

I called once in December and once in March and each time I was assured that they'd be back to me next week. Uh huh. Anyway, yesterday I got a call that my permit was ready and I could pick it up.

So I hied off to the police station where they gave me a printout that is my temporary permit. I'm to bring that to a state office within 60 days and with $70 to get the real permit or else it's back to the starting line.

363 Rinos and demorats aren't politicians, they are bought and paid for mercenaries for the wealthy and corporations. They are paid guns, they ignore the will of the people at their own peril, but they get wealthy working for the rich. Time to remove them from office.

364 If the IRS created its own tax program, it would surely (yes, you Surely), include disclaimers about it not being liable for errors in calculations, etc., so they could still screw you over even though you used their very own program.

The third party, non-IRS, providers have a market incentive to avoid errors that could screw over their customers. The IRS would have exactly the opposite incentive.

369 Hey. I have an idea. Let's make the tax system
simple enough that we don't need the private corporations OR the
government to do our taxes.

Posted by: Sooner at April 11, 2019 11:52 AM (Fs5vw)

I have an idea: Let's repeal the 16th Amendment.

Posted by: GWB at April 11, 2019 01:41 PM (7kVu3)

370 Taxes are theft. Lets just abolish taxes and we wouldn't have these issues. Get rid of the IRS altogether and not replace it at all.

I've never understood why you have to file when the government gets its cut every paycheck and gets files from your employer. Every transaction you participate in gets reported back to the government (and every penny is taxed multiple times in every transaction). It got its cut, why do I now have to file so it can take more or give back the "extra" that it stole? So the government can try to catch people out in mistakes that it can claim is a lie?

No, we should keep what we earn and spend it where we like, not have it forcibly taken from us before we even see it.

Finally, free tax services are never free. I have yet to see one that doesn't end up with a fee at the end for some reason or another.

371 "Finally, free tax services are never free. I have yet to see one that doesn't end up with a fee at the end for some reason or another."

I've seen them. I used turbotax's freefile to do both my mom's and daughter's tax returns this year and paid 0 dollars to do either one. My daughter's included free e-file for both Federal and State returns.
