Chess Thread 03-23-2019

seventh-seal-470.jpg
I hate it when this happens

Pic Note

Discovering that you've hung your queen has got to be the worst feeling in the world. There is no other "oh sh*t" moment quite like it.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (939)

Goal: Capture all of the pieces
Hint: See how White's queen command that long diagonal?

20190323 - Problem 1.jpg
7k/3rN1pn/p4q2/8/1p2Q2P/1B3P2/PPP5/1K6 w - - 0 1

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (945)

Obviously, White can trade his rook for the queen and being 2 bishops up in material should be enough to win the game. But find a faster way.

Goal: White can force a mate in 6
Hint: Set up a CRUSHING pin

20190323 - Problem 2.jpg
3r3k/6qp/p3BR2/1p4R1/5B2/2pp4/P5PK/8 w - - 0 1

From Last Week

334 Another draw. OM, can you post a definite win for White in Problem 2? Because I can't find it.

Posted by: rickl at March 16, 2019 09:06 PM (sdi6R)

One of the lines in the solution to last week's challenging problem finished with a position that looked something like this:

20190323 - Problem 3.jpg
8/6p1/p4p1p/1N2k3/8/5PP1/6KP/8 w - - 0 6
White To Move

So I said, yeah, that's a win for White and left it at that. But, as rickl found out, it's not so easy. He couldn't find it. I probably couldn't find it, either. I let the Stockfish engine analyze it and yes, it's a win, but it takes close to 50 moves to secure it. I'm thinking this is a position even a master might have problems with. I wish zombie would show up today. I would like to have his opinion on this position.

Stumbling upon complex difficulties in seemingly easy positions is one of the reasons I like chess so much.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190323 - Problem 1.jpg
7k/3rN1pn/p4q2/8/1p2Q2P/1B3P2/PPP5/1K6 w - - 0 1

1. Qa8+!

1...Qf8? results in the immediate 2.Ng6#

Now Black has a couple of ways to lose all of his pieces:

#1: 1...Rd8 2.Qxd8+ Nf8 3.Qxf8+ Qxf8 4.Ng6+ Kh7 5.Nxf8+ and wins

#2: 1...Nf8 2.Qxf8+ Qxf8 3.Ng6+ Kh7 4.Nxf8+ Kh6 5.Nxd7 and wins

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190323 - Problem 2.jpg
3r3k/6qp/p3BR2/1p4R1/5B2/2pp4/P5PK/8 w - - 0 1

1.Be5! Rg8

Best. Other moves lose more quickly:

#1: 1...Qxg5 2.Rf8#

#2: 1...d2 2.Rf8+ Rxf8 3.Bxg7#

The main line loses in 6:

2.Rf4 h6
3.Rxg7 Rxg7
4.Rf8+ Kh7
5.Bf5+ Rg6
6.Rh8#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Looks to open and clean for New York City.

Definitely not New York City sidewalks ... unless they are part of some building's front way. But there aren't many buildings in the picture so it doesn't seem like a big office building would be anywhere around there.

1. Qa8+ Nf8 (Qf8 2. Ng6#)
2. Qxf8+ Kh7 (Qxf8 3. Ng6+ Kh7 4. Nxf8+ K any 5. Nxd7 wins - two pieces to none [A] )
3. Bg8+ Kh6 (Kh8 4. Bf7+ Kh7 5. Qg8+ Kh6 6. Qh8+ Qh7 7. Qxh7#)
4. Qf4+ Qg5
5. Qxg5#

1. St. John Cantius is the best Catholic Church in the Chicago area. It's the way every Catholic Church should be

2. Gov. Jabba the Pritzker is hellbent on making Illinois as pro-abort as possible. Although the previous "Republican" governor was just as bad.

3. Scum like Madigan and Cullerton are allegedly Catholic. It's time to start ex-communicating them and their families. Deny all of them any access to the Church or even being buried in Catholic cemeteries.

79 Back in eighth grade I left my Queen exposed and you are right; the feeling you get in your gut when you realize what you have done is like no other. It has stayed with me all these years.
The only good thing about that incident was that because of my reputation my opponent thought it was some kind of trap and did not take my Queen.
He could not believe I would make such a bone-headed mistake.

88 The 1820 dress is decorated like a pelisse but isn't in my book, a pelisse is a short over jacket decorated with braid like the dress but also has fur edging. Popular in military wear with hussars from the early 1700's through the Napoleonic wars and after. Military wear often was copied into civilian styles. The pelisse was usually worn over the shoulder unless needed for weather.

And the #13 seed in question was the lowest-seeded team to get out of the first round.

Plus these days to be declared a #5 is not to be a thing of celebration. Lately, it's a thing of dread. This year, for example, 3 of the #5 seeds lost to their #12 opponents.

Josh Waitzkin (from Searching for Bobby Fischer) was playing a game in which his opponent hung his queen. It was just a major blunder. Waitzkin was convinced that it was a trick and looked at it for quite a while. He couldn't see the trick but chose not to take the queen, anyway.

Remove line feed. DM is ticking me off. They're testing some trick to fool AdBlock. It appears they are serving their ads from randomly generated URLs prepended to the domain name.

You can block each one specifically, but it's random one off and does no good. And you can't block the whole domain, because that's the site you want.

Based on that, it looks like the pic was originally published in LIFE Magazine. Not sure why they called her an Order Clerk though. She was a singer.

American jazz vocalist.
She had already established herself as a popular radio vocalist on the West Coast in the early 40's. She was hired by Woody Herman in 1941 to join his Orchestra and went on touring.
That lasted until 1943, in that summer she stopped suddenly. In October 1944, she joined up with Sonny Dunham to play and tour with his band. In 1945 she got the opportunity to record a record of her own.
In 1946 she replaced the female singer of Gene Krupa And His Orchestra, Anita O'Day who became ill and couldn't work anymore. She became very popular, but after getting married and the bitrh of her first child, she stopped touring and recording in 1947.
In 1953 she tried to make a come-back, without much success.

And a couple of clips of her singing with Gene Krupa And His Orchestra.

Thanks for highlighting last week's Problem 2, OM. I'm glad to see that it wasn't my own incompetence that prevented me from finding a win in that position. It looks like it should be easy, and I just figured I'd while away a few minutes playing it out against my computer. That turned into an hour or two of draw after draw after draw. The closest I came to a win was when Black's lone king stalemated White's king and pawn.
