Alexandria Donkey-Chompers: When I First Started Going to School, My Teachers Thought I Was a Retard
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recalled how her public-school teachers thought she needed "remedial education" because she had grown up speaking Spanish at home.And also, I'm guessing, because she's stone-cold stupid and ignorant as a lichen.
The freshman lawmaker, speaking Saturday at a packed town hall organized by the Jackson Heights People for Public Schools, said, "As a child I spoke Spanish first. … and I went to a school where no one looked like me. I went to a school where teachers thought I needed remedial education because I spoke two languages instead of one."Oh? Which two languages? And yeah, I totally believe that being bilingual in New York City was a totally exotic thing that teachers were baffled by in Nineteen F***ing NINETY-SIX, about when this retard would have begun school. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit... I bet one third of her teachers spoke Spanish as a first language themselves.
It wasn't until she took a "high-stakes" test in which she scored in the 99th percentile across the board, she said, that educators realized she did not need extra help.Was that 99th from the bottom, or 99th percent from the top? Now I took a test like that. I think they gave scores on a percentile basis.
But New York educators are saying no such tests like that were given in New York at this time.
According to Ravitch, however, Ocasio-Cortez's claim sparked "controversy" during the event. In a blog post generally praising the congresswoman, Ravitch notes Ocasio-Cortez could not be telling the truth about her test experience. The "high-stakes" test, she explains, is not scored by percentile. Ravitch writes:She's pretending Spanish -- Spanish! -- was an exotic language few Pale Faces in New York City had ever heard spoken before in 1996. As if we're talking about some small suburb of Boise in 1955. Dr. Evil would like to comment. So I guess Alexandria Donkey-Chompers' dad's first last name was "Donkey" and her mother's was "Chompers." But the thing is, many times people from a Spanish culture just use the first last name (their father's) as a surname. Vicente Fox, for example. His full name was Vicente Fox Quesada, but he routinely went by "Fox." So it's no insult to just shorten her name to the one. (Though I think when you do this, you take the first of the two surnames, not the second. So she'd be Sandy Ocasia, not Sandy Cortez.) But she takes it as an insult and a racist one to boot. Millennials and their microaggressions and pronoun-play. F*** off, race-baiting dummy. Yorktown Heights: A commenter points out she grew up in Yorktown Heights, a suburb of New York city (next county to the north). Okay, fair enough: But in Yorktown Heights, then, 25 minutes from New York City, people are baffled by Spanish speakers in 1996? Dude, I am much older than she is from a podunk town far, far from New York City or any city at all and I had Filipinos (who spoke Spanish) and kids from Mexico and Central America and an actual just-got-here arrival from Ar-hen-tina in my grade school. No one was wigged out. No teachers said, "I do not understand these alien sounds you are making with your foreign mouth."
There was much talk about the importance of parents taking action by opting out of state tests. NYC has one of the lowest opt-out rates in the state, in some part because parents are warned that they won’t be admitted to the middle school or high school of their choice without test scores. It was a bit jarring to hear AOC say that she was treated in the Yorktown schools as in need of remedial education because she was Hispanic, not mainstream, but, she said, "a-high-stakes standardized Test" revealed she was in the 99th percentile. No one stopped to point out that she could not be referring to any high-stakes test used for accountability purposes because they don't rank by percentile. They classify students as 1, 2, 3, or 4. Her teacher must have given her a no-stakes individual test that produces a percentile ranking for diagnostic purposes. Well, she can't know everything about everything. None of us do.

But the Spanish don't use the hyphen. Some will use "y", Vicente Fox y Quesada, which means Dad is Fox and Mom is Quesada.

This is baffling. She's 28. Call it 29 to allow for time-of-year. That puts her as born in 1990. That means starting school in maybe 1994 or 1995.

I've told this here before, but I absolutely bombed the IQ test in pre-school. I mean BOMBED it. This was a result of abysmal vision problem, which had not yet been diagnosed.
My mom refused to put me in special ed, because I'm not retarded, and never had one complaint about lagging behind from teachers before I eventually got glasses. Once I could hear, and it wasn't just visual, I was fine.
If teachers are saying you're retarded, there's a good chance it's true. Half of them are also retarded, so I'm guessing she's VERY dim.

But here's something else to consider. Latin America--including Mexico and Puerto Rico--were emigration destinies for millions of WHITE Spanish Europeans--well into the 20th century, so even of someone acts like they are a put-upon immigrant , they may only be a generation or two removed from Spain.

it does seem to be over-diagnosed. I suspect, after reading some of the requirements, that as an early adolescent I'd have been diagnosed and pumped full of drugs and shunted off into special schools, all other things being equal to today. I had crippling shyness and high anxiety - introvert who obsessed over problems. It took me years to learn how to handle groups. I still get obsessive, but that's okay and I work in a technical field that gives me an outlet

When I was a kid, I had a summer camp friend whose dad was a rabbi. He spoke fluent English and Hebrew. When I first met him, it was really difficult to talk to him because he drifted between them all the time. My second year at that summer camp was a night and day difference - he had sorted it out. I suspect truly bilingual children might have to get through something like that, where they learn which context calls for which language.

That is what the VAST majority of immigrants from Spanish speaking countries do and always have done here.

I looked up Spanish naming conventions. My eyes glazed over. I may be wrong, but I think she's doing it wrong with the hyphens.
Her father was and Ocasio and her mother was a Cortez. After marriage her mother started calling herself Ocasio-Cortez, and gave that name to the children.
There is a Spanish "copulative conjunctive" construction (fucking conjunctive?) used with a 'y' or 'e' (depending on if a name begins with certain vowels.
So is Miss Smith and Mr. Jones marry, the children could be surnamed Jones y Smith.
I don't see any hyphens being used -- so I don't think that's traditional, just something recent American Hispanics do.

My father-in-law was involved the NYC teachers' union battles of the 1960s. At one point he questioned a Latino union officer as to whether it was a good idea to put kids like this in Spanish-speaking classrooms.
The answer he got back was: "It's not about the kids. It's about jobs for our people."

Wait. So being multilingual is a 21st century thing, it's normal, commonplace, no big deal (said when defending herself). And at the same time teachers at a school outside New York City think a kid needs remedial education b/c she is (gasp) bilingual.
I dearly wish someone from that school district would speak up. Victim status is a powerful currency in today's culture and she's lying and/or exaggerating to inflate her own worth. (Yes it was stupid the way Ingraham criticized AOC for how she says her last name.)
It's *possible* what concerned those teachers was not that AOC was bilingual but her English was shaky. My wife is a teacher and regularly has new kids who don't speak it. They're bright, usually come from great homes, and they struggle simply b/c they can hardly follow classroom instruction in English.
Because she attended Boston University, I have been reluctant to draw the obvious conclusion that AOC is not only a flaming twit, she's a dangerous flaming twit.
