Politico: 12 Different Political/Economic Models of Voter Behavior Predict a Trump Victory in 2020, and Not a Small One

President Donald Trump has a low approval rating. He is engaging in bitter Twitter wars and facing metastasizing investigations.

But if the election were held today, he’d likely ride to a second term in a huge landslide, according to multiple economic models with strong track records of picking presidential winners and losses.

Credit a strong U.S. economy featuring low unemployment, rising wages and low gas prices -- along with the historic advantage held by incumbent presidents.

...

"The economy is just so damn strong right now and by all historic precedent the incumbent should run away with it," said Donald Luskin, chief investment officer of TrendMacrolytics, a research firm whose model correctly predicted Trump’s 2016 win when most opinion polls did not. "I just don't see how the blue wall could resist all that."

...

"Even if you have a mediocre but not great economy -- and that's more or less consensus for between now and the election -- that has a Trump victory and by a not-trivial margin," winning 54 percent of the popular vote to 46 for the Democrat, he said. Fair's model also predicted a Trump win in 2016 though it missed on Trump's share of the popular vote.

15 This doesn't make me any less nervous. Trump is a black swan. Historical models, even when accurate, often don't apply to 6+ sigma events like Trump was and remains because black swans confound most models.

"Conventional wisdom" applied little in 2016, and the only prediction I feel comfortable making is that it will continue to apply little in 2020.

28 I'm gonna be Ee-yore on this because my pessimism is my armor; but the fact is Trump won in 2016 because turnout was relatively low and his opponent had all the appeal of a root canal.

The Democrats learned in 2018 the power of a fully operational turnout and fraud machine. And the GOP, which doesn't like Trump anyway, will be standing around with their dicks in their hands, as per usual, while the Democrats field a few million Soros-funded "volunteers" to harvest every loose ballot like a cocaine addict looking for flakes in the bathroom tile.

The Democrats have as part of their platform:

- Jew hatred
- infanticide
- support for Hamas
- no US borders
- abolition of the ICE agency
- shitty schools
- giving illegal immigrants greater rights than US citizens
- more infanticide
- weird sex and gender bullshit
- pederasty and NAMBLA support
- drag kids parading their ass in gay bars
- Communism
- AOC
- media corruption
- censorship
- hatred of the military
- constant war
- this idiot Beto
- destruction of free speech on college campuses
- blacklisting conservatives from education and employment

So, the Dems are moving way to the left, and the media is going along with them.

F em.

This is another factor. I said in #15 that I am suspicious of "conventional wisdom" in 2020 because Trump is a black swan. This is another one. The Dems have become completely unglued and desperate and, unlike the RNC, they spent 2018 learning what they can get away with.

Desperate people, though, don't usually walk up to the line - they cross it. Depending on how they cross it, that could easily land us in black swan-type territory, too, on the other side.

Trust nothing in 2020. Don't trust the models, don't trust the polls, don't trust the commentary. Throw it all out. This is not the same game, and the same rules can't be used to predict its outcome. Go campaign and vote and keep hawk-like eyes on potential corruption and do what you can to publicize it it. Beyond that, I got nothin'.

If I were a voter in a traditional Democrat state that comprises their "blue wall," I'd be pissed. If I were a Democrat, I'd be pissed that they take my vote and me for granted in their machine. If I were a Republican, I'd be pissed that they don't really give one whit about my state or me because they take it for granted.

The "blue wall" crap is deeply offensive to anyone with a brain. There are rotten boroughs like California, but most of the "blue wall" states aren't gimmies.

76 I have a pretty solid record on predicting Presidential elections. All else being equal, I don't really see a "path to victory" for any of the flotsam and jetsam in this Dem field this year.

That said - everything hinges on aggressively tamping down fraud efforts in places like PA, WI, MI, GA, FL, etc.

Those places where the fraud machine is going to be cranked up to 11.

I haven't seen any inclination by Trump to prepare for this. Hopefully, there are preparations, and it's just being done quietly, to avoid the shrieks of "rayyyyycism." I can't imagine he doesn't see this coming a mile away.

The first point, full of imputation, means nothing. His "twitter wars" are in fact an asset for him. The "bitter" is a lazy adjective also meaningless.

"Metastasizing investigations" is vacuous and self-referential term. First, who's "metastasizing" them? and second, metastasizing zero equals less than zero (i.e., more damaging to the investigators than the investigated.)

His platform is dull-as-dishwater centrist. He is not, and nor is how he is treated. The platform matters, but a lot of people don't vote based on platform - they vote on personality, looks, temperament, attitude, perception, etc. All of the non-platform stuff (and some of the platform stuff) in 2020 is way out in rare territory across the board, not even counting the machinations and fraud.

155 The tweet storm in the Morning Rant seemed to miss a key ingredient. There IS no national election now. Giving the states electors meant that the states handle presidential elections just as they handle Senate and House elections.

1) Thus, states are responsible for all elections. A national election would be something that would have to be created and would--surprise!--be in the hands of the federal government, and be hauled out for 1 election every 4 years.

Also if your state is blue enough, in power, to cheat, there stands a good chance that the blues would have won the state. Again, these elector votes are given to the state to dispense with how they please. If your state is corrupt--that's a problem between the governors and the people. And it stays a state problem.

It isolates the corruption.

It's kind of like a band handing you back-stage passes. Yeah take one for yourself, and one *should* go to your girlfriend who you promised you'd let meet the band. But instead a hot girl really wants to meet the band and she'll ... ahem ... compensate for them.

The passes were yours, you just chose to complicate your life with them. Your "cheating" is entirely an isolated other case.

The Electoral College makes sense. 4-year, one-purpose "national elections" don't.

I think that that effect is overplayed.

Individuals tend to gravitate toward more "conservative" views as they age. So, in theory at least, new D voters coming up and old R voters dying will be offset by former D voters becoming R voters over the last 4 years.

But we'll see.

189 Hayek correctly pointed out that the economy is organic, it THRIVES on confidence.

If people think the economy is good, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, because they are willing to invest and take chances.

In 2008, the economy was OK right up until a SUPRISE right before the election. One that was caused by Banks, and perpetuated by the Treasury Department, and got us Obama.

Note, the only real change since then has been using Fed Res zero interest loans to consolidate the Banking industry into larger banks (who now control more of the 'voting' stock that elects the OTHER Fed Res Bank Board members).

Now, almost all the News shows are saying the economy is slowing, with no real evidence.

They know that Hayek was correct, and the media CAN slow this economy down.

And will do so to defeat Trump.

Posted by: SMOD at March 21, 2019 12:56 PM (QkjLD)

I'd say that's a fair bet.

And China makes me *very* nervous.

I think they wildly overstate their GDP, much of their GDP comes from initiatives out of Beijing that say "we want 6% GDP growth this year. Make it happen." then they flood money in to the system. This involves a lot of malinvestment and doesn't look like what we'd normally consider to be economic growth. Building ghost cities or spending billions on "start ups," on paper, makes a GDP higher, but uh... I mean, GDP is a flawed measurement in the first place.

Anyways, I feel like it's inevitable that at some point China faces a reckoning.

On the flip side, most of what they produce is easy enough to produce in other third world countries, so any recession may remain largely isolated to China and their sphere of influence. Hard to say.

Not only is some of this now being exported, much of it is replacing the oil we used to import from the middle east, keeping that money here, in our own economy.

just some quick math, 12 million x $60/bbl x 365 days is about a $262 Billion boost to the economy each year, just from Oil Production alone. (and we haven't even mentioned nat gas)

And yet... most polls show a pretty even split between parties and how people lean. It's close to 50/50 (if you force independents to pick a side.)

And the sub break downs are about what you'd expect -- millennial men are more R, millennial women are more D, etc.

So I'm just a bit dubious about some big shift being in play.

286 "Literally years and years of 0% rates and $80B+ in fake money pumped
into Dogeater's economy every month, and they raise rates on Trump the
moment he walks through the door."

it made sense only in that they were trying to save the markets regardless of policy. (not in their charter, but saving the rich is now what the fed reserve does).

So with Obama policy plus the TARP bailouts (of the richest) ... they took extraordinary action to save the markets (which is tied to "the economy"). Obama kept punishing the economy as Bernanke kept juicing the markets with liquidity and QE to bail "us" out.

So when Trump came and removed many barriers and the real economy showed signs of life, the fed decided to return to more normal monetary policy. But the bubble was already in stocks, so getting out of insane liquidity punished the Trump "renewal".

But at the root, I do believe it is globalist intent to punish Trump. If we had prez Hillary, we would maybe have crashed but have the New World Order underway, idk. Bailing out Obama with such drastic measures (and the crooked banks) ... is the problem we still have. Bubble bubble ... we have troubles.

Ever since the '60s pundits have erroneously been assuming that the liberal leanings of young voters will translate into a liberal majority as they age.

What ALL the models leave out is that life is an endless conveyor belt rightward, and that the older you get, the more conservative you get. All those far-left radical hippies in the '60s? Well now they're all senior citizens, and guess what: The majority of them vote conservative. The conveyor belt of life transported them from socialist to Republican without anyone noticing.

I guarantee that the leftist colleges students of today will mature and age into eventual conservatives. And that remains true for every age group, every generation. The very notion that young leftists all become old leftists is is mistaken.

Women have always been more Dem and the yuutes too. But 80%? That's out there.

Part of it may be that a higher % of 30 year old women are single and kid free today than in the past. So when they get married the over 30 woman demo will swing more heavy to R.

Then again milenials aren't getting married or having kids anymore. At least nowhere near what previous generations did.

358 The cheapest, most repetitive and unfortunately effective fake news tactic I see being used is any, offhand comment, in whatever context, being presented though DJT had convened a press conference in the Rose Garden for the sole purpose of announcing that comment, e.g. "George Conway is a whack job"

That, of course, was the President simply being candid in one part of a response to a number of questions in which he was basically being asked to agree with someone giving an armchair diagnosis claiming that he was unfit for office.

Then the story is all "Trump Slams Conway As..." etc etc etc. so that 5 CNN talking heads can cluck with each other about "what this says about the President's mental stability" etc.

Has anyone done an analysis of not only what % of CNN is Trump negative (let me guess: 100%) but what % of overall CNN coverage is dedicated to the President? And, compare that to prior Presidents? I had the misfortune of having to watch CNN at various points in my business travels this past week, and it seems that 75% of their entire programming is Trump slamming.

I remember hearing the same thing when I graduated from highschool (1983) and after... except... it seemed to me that it was more Alex Keaton and when I went to college all the aging hippies were appalled by our failure to *care*.

My adult kids now... they're pretty darned "socialist" and also in a bit of despair about the future and jobs and, well, after Carter? The first year or so of Reagan? I remember that feeling, too. When you "come of age" in an economy like Obama's and full adults had all the burger flipper jobs and you've been told you'll never have anything...

I've actually pulled them up short a couple of times lately when they voice some variation of "things are bad and different now, a person just can't make it" because it's not true and the economy is NOT bad and there's no reason to believe that it won't get better.

But I also tell them that the economy when they were 16 really was that bad and thinking that's "normal" is a reasonable thing to think... it's just not true.

A lot of young people in their mid-20's have no personal experience *at all* with an economy that didn't suck and suck epically. They have little to no work experience.

That could change overnight.
