A Little of This. A Little of That.

Dear Misanthropic Humanitarian,

I heard about this dog while listening to The Bob and Tom Show on the radio this morning. Maybe some other rons and ettes will enjoy it. I'm thinking there must be some yeti DNA mixed in with the mastiff and Himalayan sheep dog genes. H/T

Meet The PetMorons

linduh.jpg

Well, here he is. I think we're sticking with the name Poppy. He doesn't mind Bleu but Bleu DOES mind him. Bleu's been hiding since he arrived. Poppy does not like the dog, I don't think he's ever been around one before. A bit of growling, hissing, and spitting going on by the new kitten. He is tiny, a bit over 2 lbs. and is a bit bony but we can fix that. - Linduh

What a little cutie! Give them time, they will get to tolerate each other if not more than that. Thanks for submission

This is Shepard the Beagle Dog (though in truth he is a Beagle/Pointer mix) and we brought him home 10-years ago from a shelter.

Shepard is sweet but like all beagles he loves to eat. Honestly, you’d never think we feed him the way he constantly prowls about the whenever anyone in the house opens the pantry or the refrigerator.

Shepard loves us all and he is on constant guard against people walking by with their pets, the mail man and all delivery personnel though I think his barking is really is way of asking “Hey! You got any treats?”

There three photos sum up our beagle dog; contented, contemplative and in command.

I’m a moron and a lurker and love the AOS Pet Thread, my favorite weekly feature.

Yours, The Man Who Spoils Shepard

That is one lucky puppy Shepard. He certainly appears to have quite the life! Thank you for being a supportive lurker.

These are our Pride and joy. Bert, the large economy sized white cat has been with us for 17 years. Judy (the black and white) and Daisy (the tabby) entered the family 4 years ago after The Woo, Bert’s BFF of 13 years, passed away. Bert was inconsolable after Woo passed, so after about 2 weeks of gloomy Bert, we decided that he needed a companion. A single kitten may have been too much for this old cat to handle, so naturally we got two. Bert’s initial reaction to the two young kittens was somewhere between contempt and outrage. Judy, rumored to be a Norwegian forest cat, worked her comedic charm and wiles on Bert, but Daisy, the scaredy-cat peacemaker eventually won him over. The three have differing views of who’s Top Cat while (mostly) enjoying each other’s company. My husband and I, very low-ranking members of their Pride, tend dutifully to them. They are not shy about letting us sit beneath them so long as we provide tummy rubs and chin scratches. It is a peaceful Pride that loves to play, and we’re blessed to be counted in their numbers. And, of course Daisy is a shameless photobomber. We love your Saturday thread … keep up the great work!

Shaquerone (a lurker in the Great Free State of South Carolina

What a neat group of cats. Quite the story you have there. We appreciate you submitting the story of Bert, Daisy & Judy. Thanks for being a lurker, I'm glad you stepped out of the shadows.

allenhorses.jpg

I rarely if ever comment here, but I thought I would send this to the pet thread. Breitbart was right.

These are my boys getting ready for the first day of spring training for this year’s pack season. The Bay Thoroughbred in the foreground is “Lucky,” my trail horse, who came off a race track in Texas where he never won a dime. The Mustang with the white blaze on his head is “Jake,” my pack horse, who I got through the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program.

When I got “Lucky” he knew only one thing, must run faster! My life flashed in front of my eyes several times. The first time I took him on a drive I found out he was afraid of cattle and I thought I was going to have to wear a bag over my head. I sucked dust for a week riding drag because of him but he got over his fear. “Jake” was a bit of a slow learner (AoS Horde Material) but he’s come along splendidly.

My wife sure enjoyed the show when I was first training them, “oooh, that looked like it hurt” she would cheerfully say. They are both great mountain horses now and I trust them with my life, as they do theirs with me.

Best Regards, Allen

Valley is a goofy teenager needing more work. Both are friendly. Both were neglected but not abused.

Actually, my philosophy is not to have 2 animals of the same age.

That being said, they both sound like interesting dogs. Lab/Husky would be a wash & wear dog with minimal grooming.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but whichever one you select will have a great home I have no doubt.

57 When we had two cats we had two litter boxes but found the sisters both used both, Oh well.

Mine use both boxes too-- but the vet's point is that having a litter box for each cat prevents one from getting territorial and keeping the other cat(s) from using the box-- that kind of bullying happens in some multicat households. In addition, if one cat is feeling an urgent need to use the box, it won't have to wait for another cat to finish up if it has its own box.

67 I've told these stories before but a couple of the links reminded me.

One of our first poodles went blind at 4 years old. He never skipped a beat. He and his brother, without prompting, teamed up like a well-rehearsed act as guider and 'guidee'. They were litter mates and had been together from birth so playing and cuddling was natural to them.

Concerning therapy animals (that horse is amazing). One of our toy poodles was especially adorable and kept his puppy proportions all his life. He was riding in Mrs. JTB's purse when visiting a relative in a nursing home public room. The nurses warned us that one of the old ladies, very frail, was terrified of dogs because of her time in a German Concentration camp with guard dogs. No problem since she thought the pup was a stuffed toy. She reached out to pet the 'toy' and was surprised when she got a puppy kiss on the hand. We figured she would freak out but Strudel was too adorable. She ended up playing with him for several minutes. The nurses told us later that it was the first time they ever saw her smile. It's a wonderful memory.

Posted by: JTB at March 23, 2019 04:01 PM (bmdz3)

68 We just learned that our German Shepherd has a severely enlarged heart

I lost my second cat (Kette, a brown tabby) to cardiomyopathy. No warning at all until one night she hissed at me, which she had never done before. She was also having trouble breathing. We rushed her to the ER at the local animal hospital, but there was nothing they could do for her after diagnosing the problem. She had never had any major health problems, and the suddenness of her loss still hurts. Kette was an easygoing, friendly cat who got along well with her cat companions (bonded with two of them), and I miss her terribly . . . yes, I will hug my present two kittehs very closely tonight.

At six weeks when I picked him up I had him in the truck with me and a friend walked over to say Hi. Max looked at him and started growling.

He was an exceptional working dog and protector. He never bit anyone but he would warn anyone to stay away.

I had to rehome him because the Farm I was managing at the time had other workers and Max would not let them walk into the barn

I gave him to a friend that had lots of cattle to work and he lived a long and happy life.

He is right about 70 lbs. Biggest Aussie I've ever seen. He comes from a line of working ranch dogs. I suspect he might be an aussie/clydesdale mix.

I know a guy, he and his wife wanted to adopt a child. It is a lengthy process. A real pita, if you know what I mean.
Finally, a child becomes available. A boy. There's a catch, can you take his sister too?
They didn't hesitate at all.
I've done that with pets, but not humans.

I have gotten cats from shelters and purebreds too. Over time the cost isn't different. One Persian I adopted from the state pound for 20 dollars cost 200 in the first week for shots. Another cat I got for free as an emergency rescue needed much vet treatment in his short life before dying of his terminal condition.

Back in the day, we were given a non papered purebred miniature cocker spaniel. It had the sweet breed disposition, but was the dumbest dog I have ever had. It also had serious health problems over its life. The key to a good purebred is a reputable breeder with references.

91 I'm glad and I thank you for going the shelter dog adoption route. Way too many fine animals in those that make great pets to good homes.
Posted by: Calm Mentor at March 23, 2019 03:41 PM (ffYR/)

I agree that there are many fine animals in a shelter.......Here comes the But I love the traits of a specific breed. Call me a snob but my next dog, will probably be my last pet. And I will get the breed that I want.

2 of my daughters have dogs that came from no kill shelters. Wonderful dogs and they are always welcomed here at our house. However, adopting a mix breed dog is a crap shoot on the personality.
Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at March 23, 2019 03:49 PM (aA3+G)

----------------------------

Agreed on the crap shoot, and everyone should do what suits their situations. I have had all shelter dogs and have been fortunate. I understand this is not everyone's experience though.

I have always gotten Lab mixes, as their personalities are pretty predictable, friendly and goofy.
Posted by: Calm Mentor at March 23, 2019 04:00 PM (ffYR/)

Purebreds can also be a crapshoot personality-wise. I have a purebred British Shorthaired cat that despite the breeds rep as a fairly calm cat is wildly hostile to being held by people and decided to isolate himself in a room after some scraps with another cat of mine.

I have another cat, a Persian who was crazy hostile to people and cats when I adopted her, due to being abused by owners, kids then abandoned into an open shelter with dozens of cats. She also gave herself a room in the house and has at least gotten rid of her hostility to people and much of it to cats. She did make an enemy of another cat of mine in the process who bullies her if she gets in the room. But she loves her own bedroom too.

These days there are lots of Purebreds getting dumped, so you can often combine the two and find a purebred from a shelter, especially if you hunt websites dedicated to them.

Labs are an awesome breed.
The Lab mixes I see here are usually with Pit Bull.
I had a neighbor with 2 Pits. One was awesome and the other I wouldn't trust further than a politician.

The other type of dog in the mixed breeds this way would be herding.

Mid kid had a corgi and now a mixed breed with some type of herding dog mix. Not crazy about that.

I've found that purebred personality traits are pretty consistent. Health issues are the biggest crap shoot.

Youngest daughter has a mix breed dog with his very own health issues.

95 Thnks to everyone for sending in the pictures of their pets. I never get tired of looking at them each week.

Posted by: JTB at March 23, 2019 04:39 PM (bmdz3)

96 If you are adopting an older dog, shelter dogs are pretty safe WRT to personality with the visiting beforehand and trial periods. There is nothing wrong and in fact plenty of right with folks who want a working dog or in love with a specific breed keeping good breeders in business, but its better to know your way around before taking on a puppy IMO. Just don't take on a problem adult from a shelter, and you won't have to; there are plenty of sweeties with varying energy levels to suit different lifestyles that have wound up at shelters.

I would pass on any mix that included Pit or Rotty. This is for the simple reason that the dogs I've had were family dogs, with kids coming in and out all the time. Those breeds are great for the immediate family, and very protective. I understand many people have and love them, but I just couldn't take a chance on an incident.

Mine have been Lab/Chow, Lab/Beagle and Lab/Mastiff mixes. None of these had any health issues, and lived until their late teens. As I said, I have had good luck.

We got a pure bred miniature schnauzer way back in the day from a pet shop. Very sweet and smart dog but she developed uncontrollable diabetes in less than two years and we had to euthanize her.

At one point we were injecting her with 20 units of insulin twice daily, and it still wasn't helping. That is an incredible amount of insulin for a small 20 pound dog.

She never had a chance.

I wonder whether diabetes is more severe in dogs than in cats. I've had two diabetic cats-- neither ever needed more than 3 units of insulin twice daily, and that only until they adjusted to the insulin, after which one unit twice daily was all they needed. Both eventually went into remission and were insulin-free.

122 Here is my purebred - mixed breed contribution. Many years ago we lived near Bedminster NJ (an area of big estates and horses and hunting dogs.) We got a fabulous 10 week old puppy from a shelter there. Her mom was a purebred champion Black Labrador and her dad a purebred Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They lived on neighboring properties and apparently accidentally got together. Oops. When the puppies were born and it was obvious from their curly fur that Pop was a Chessie the Lab's owners took them to the vet to be euthanized. Dr. said "fine, I'll take care of it" and since he knew the quality of both parents and was disgusted by the whole thing, he secretly kept the puppies at the clinic until they were old enough to go to the shelter for adoption. Our Bayonne was a wonderful and smart dog. We always said we had a full bred Chesilab when anybody asked.
