Ripped From The Headlines

  • How do you spell Karma? Chicken Pox, dumb ass.

  • When vaping is outlawed only vapors will be outlaws. San Francisco where needles are discarded on sidewalks and the streets filled with shit.

  • Once again Leftards make the case that single payer health care is ridiculous.

  • What came first the egg or the global warming. Settled science my ass.

  • Outstanding. Instead of being high energy and adventurous, this shop will be fat and lazy. Kickstarter to unionize.

  • The nice thing about living in America's Dairyland is I don't have to eat this weird shit. Wonder if CBD will try this?

  • Once again I'm not cool. I'll keep my Bunn.

No need to ask for directions when you're a Genius Award Winner.

PORT HURON, Mich. - A man who was allegedly attempting to transport meth from Montreal to Calgary was busted when his iPhone navigation took him to a border checkpoint - Port Huron's Blue Water Bridge.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspected a Canadian vehicle at the bridge on Wednesday, driven by a Canadian citizen, Constantine Xethalis. Two others were in the vehicle.

After they were unable to provide proof of citizenship, the vehicle was searched. Officers found approximately 10 pounds of meth in tablet form.

77 O?T and I know I'm early but I want to ask the Horde to pray for two men. One a Kittitas County sheriff deputy, Ryan Johnson. 42 killed last night by a criminal who opened fire on him during an attempted traffic stop. He leaves behind a wife and three children. Wounded in the same event was Kittitas City police officer Benito Chavez, 22. He was airlifted to a Level One trauma center in Seattle with a shattered femur. He will be, eventually, okay. He and his wife are expecting their first child.
The criminal, who you can do with what you will, Juan Manuel Flores Del Toro, 29 died at the local hospital. Deputy Johnson was a 15 year veteran. Officer Chavez was only hired in December. I'll ask prayers for them and their families.
Thank you all, friends in grey boxes.

*HAH!* A "Slapweasel" is the Mortal Enemy of The Weasel, minus our own Moron Brand, withal.

Just finished the remake of "Suspiria" and I think I like it even more than the original. Instead of the lurid colors and jump scares of the 70's version, its all dreary muted neutrals slashed by blood red. And it has one of the most gruesome black magic scenes ever.

I'm still fuming about a nightmare I had with MS tech support this morning. My problem was that my copy of Windows 10 Pro on my new system deactivated itself. This was a $200 full copy I bought back in Dec. I just bit the bullet and did it, since I had no upgradable version(well, that would work) of Windows for what became the new system.

Now, this ASR mobo is based on the new Intel z390 chipset, so new and cutting edge and some bugs and rapidly updated BIOS as those kinks are worked out.

I have flashed 3 new BIOSes (BIOi?) since I put it together in Dec. During one of those flashes, one of the MAC addresses on one of the (3!) onboard Ethernet controllers was wiped out.

No problem -- ASR tech support emailed a link to download a tool to reflash those addresses.

I did that last night -- you had to open up the case to read the original factory MACs off some stickers on the mo/bo.

Well, that flash operation changed something, some damn checksum or something in the (secret) algorithm Windows uses to computer a unique hardware ID.

It would not reactivate, doing about a dozen different things to do it. So, time to call tech support. I was not going to throw away a $200 license.

    .....

My call to tech support, after going through a long winded automated thing, connected me to some Indian woman.

I could not understand a damn word she was saying. Her accent, cadence, inflection etc, was so off it sounded like gibberish. Unintelligible.

I got frustrated and just said sorry, can't understand, and hung up.

Fooled around with the same shit for another 30 minutes with no success, and, determined not to blow that $200, called again.

Got another Indian woman. Still couldn't understand a damned word. It took over 30 minutes, but I finally got her to understand and she connected me to someone up the chain.

Not native American, but much better accent. No problem. Well, that took another near hour. We finally got my $200 purchase verified, and me verified.

She then sent me up the chain to some Windows guy. He was American, and knew a bit what he was about.

The trouble was some glitch didn't generate a proper key for the full retail purchase. It thought it was an upgrade, the free kind for previous Windows that aren't transferable or something.

He had to generate a new key. First he had to get authorization from his superiors to do that. Then it took 15 minutes for the system to generate said new key.

He then gave me the key, and voila, she activated.

Over 3 hours total time on the phone this morning.

This Indian accent thing blew my mind. Those two women were unintelligible. Now, back in college I had a Mechanics professor who was Indian. It took a little getting used to, but his accent was actually enjoyable. SOrt of sing-song cadence, and rather fun to listen to.

For example, "Moment of intertia" would sound like "momentum inertia". He pronounced moment, "moMENT". And "fuel" like "foo-el" (rocket equation stuff).

And during collision problem lectures (standard 200 undergrad mechanics) he'd get all animated with diagrams of the billard balls. "Dis fellow go dis way, and dat fellow go dat way!"

And he'd take his chalk and write on the walls when he ran out of room on the blackboard. He also drew on the door to the classroom, using it as a radius, "R -- dis is 'r', drawing a radius vector", then swinging the door back and forth to illustrate torque and such.

He was a trip. And fun. Quirky accent, but lovable.

These tech support MS outsourcees were not anything of the kind.

Turns out from what I was reading that difference between my Mechanics prof and those tech support gals was, to put it bluntly, one of class.

The former was a well educated, higher class Indian. He was a Ph.D in physics, educated in English. He though and spoke in English, using it conversationally from an early age and with native speakers. He then came over here to get the Ph.D and further honed his English.

His native cadence was still there, but it was with real English, spoken by real speakers.

Not so much the tech support gals. They are taught English, well "English" spoken by other Indians and completely removed from any native speakers of it.

It's an odd affected artificial language really. It's not real English at all.

275 We don't have Springtime in Alaska. We have breakup. Three weeks of filthy slop and precarious walking surfaces, wet feet and crabbiness, and usually a nice Chinook wind from the south at, say, 90 mph, intermittently.

We are hip deep in breakup just now.

The foot thick layer of compressed ice that made up my driveway is now several foot deep potholes full of filthy water and the rest is resisting chipping with everything the frozen ground can muster.

Crossing the parking lot at work involved hip boots or maybe water skis.

Haven't walked the dog for a week now and I'm not fixing to start any time soon.

I've been behind enemy lines in MN since '90 - both our kids live here with their spouses so leaving anytime soon isn't an option. But we all keep our noses clean and do what we can. I have a trip to Maui in two weeks with the spouse of 29 years, a permit to purchase under review after a move to a twin home and a work move today to a corner cube with no one looking over my shoulder so life is pretty damn good.

I just read an interesting piece at the Daily Mail on the Titanic. There's more about the coal fire.

That was something that came out a few years ago. There was a smoldering coal fire in some of the bunkers. This was a common problem with the coal burners. Anyway, it was known, and documented from testimony.

But the claim is that it contributed much more to the sinking than thought. They claim that the fire had heated some of the bunker walls red hot and they have warped and weakened. When it hit the iceberg, it allowed it to break the water tight seals on the bulkheads.

And second they were going pretty fast, stoking the furnaces pretty fast to try to get rid of the smoldering coal as fast as they could. Thus they hit the iceberg at a much greater speed than otherwise.

    388 Thanks for the ONT.

Something interesting: I have been playing The Division 2 and it has been mostly quite good. There have been some cultural quibbles: The paramilitary enemy faction immediately starts acting like a mafia and executing it's own for desertion (although I have less issue with that last than they probably intended.)

The part that made me go 'Huh?' was a mini boss that pops up if you do a side quest chain. The mini boss is supposed to be a 'direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson' who starts kidnapping people and forcing them to work for him as 'slaves' (remember this is after an epidemic has wiped out something like 95% of the world population.) The Division guy tells you 'Go make sure he cannot continue his ancestor's legacy of slavery.'

Now, I am not a big Thomas Jefferson fan, but really? THAT is all you are going to take away from the author of the Declaration of Independence? Come on now, children.

Turning hard right (to starboard) to avoid collision, only makes sense if the impending collision is with another vessel under way, with the helmsman also trained to turn hard to starboard in such circumstances. Icebergs are under way; they drift with the current, and cannot take evasive action if they even wanted to.

I think there were a few hundred Bill Frick Studillacs made. I don't know if good records were kept. I might have seen one, but don't know if it was a Frick car. Pretty easy to make a clone, and a pretty easy engine swap to do, given that the Caddy engine of the day was dimensionally almost identical to Studebaker's V8.

I think there is an SDC member in Georgia or the Carolinas with an actual Frick Studillac.

AFAIK his records are gone: he was a college prof, and on the day he retired he walked out of the ivied walls and keeled over dead.

Usually that club's magazine is a real gold standard of historical accuracy. They did have one slip-up, though. They ran a detailed and admiring article on the work of the late Bill Frick.

The Texas City Museum has an epic display, replete with hundreds of photographs, and artifacts.

It was far worse than the mere statistics can portray.

I've met survivors of the event.

That kind of history, told by those that lived it, carry a kind of force that no mere textbook or photograph can convey.

Every time I drive across the Galveston Causeway, I look out over the water at Texas City, and the ships moored at the exact same docks.

And realize in a glimpse, that if one of those ships goes up, from that same Causeway I go off.

Kinda brings it home a bit, that.

552 I wish there were a conservative alternative to Youtube. Yeah I know, there should be conservative alternatives to all the big net platforms. But there are alternative search engines, browsers, and even web mail. There should be a Youtube alternative that draws content. I know there is some French option but it is not the same thing.

Youtube pushes leftist videos relentlessly. I don't think there would even be an SNL if Youtube did not put them at the top of trending videos every freaking Sunday. And they will not stop putting this John Oliver video at the top of trending. I finally watched it after what seems like a week and I did learn something. John Oliver is hot garbage. If this is what people find interesting and worthy, God help us.

One more thing I noticed from Youtube. If you search "Medal of Honor" and late night shows, the interviews seem to end around 3 years ago. I can't believe the late night hosts are so petty and so partisan that they wont interview MOH recipients from the present administration. That is some really weird stuff.*
    * Fallon, who seems to be the most normal of the group, did honor four recipients last year and at least one received the medal during the Trump admin. But I have not seen a single recipient interviewed like they were during the Obama admin. It is not a big deal in some ways, but it is a big deal in others. I mean, what the crap!
I could have missed the interviews but sure can't find them.

Brother came over to cook yesterday and he's freaking brilliant in the kitchen. Pork loin, homemade applesauce, smashed new potatoes, -compared to the elderly potatoes- and snap peas.

He also made an apple crisp-type-thing that involved vanilla ice cream and a hot Cup-O-Joe.

Man... I love when he is here! We've never been closer as siblings and that's Quite the Blessing.

555 Back. Messing with my Chinese Mystery Pistol. It looks as though I made the firing pin too short. It dimples the primer, but did not set it off. I was using a cartridge from which I removed the bullet, and dumped out the powder, so no danger of a nasty accident.

But I did get the extractor to work, so there's that. The firing pin I made is a short length of drill rod, silver-brazed into the end of the striker. I was aiming for about .050" of protrusion past the face of the breechblock, and I came up a little short. No biggie. I can heat the striker, remove the short piece, and braze in a longer one easily enough. But not tonight.

570 I've lectured, cajoled, written signs, you name it...

lecturing rarely works. It depends of course on the stage of the disease but there is pretty much nothing sadder than watching people argue or even try to reason with a dementia patient at a certain point. And this is what you see all the time. It is human nature, it is how we are taught to interact.

I am not going to give any medical advice but from my experience people are going to eat what they want to eat and when they are hungry. I recall hearing that dementia patients take a lot more time to eat so you have to account for that as well.

I know one patient that would chew his pills like candy. It did not matter that some of those were designed to dissolve over time. My point is there are just some things you can't control. There have to be other ways to give them vitamins, roughage, or whatever the doctor thinks is necessary.

575 Ive learned from trial and error that using the phrase (kindly) 'this is what we are going to do now/today' works much better than asking her choice. 578 Every situation is different, some are worse than others, and it is nobody's fault. You play the hand you are dealt. What worked for me was giving them the calmest, happiest, and most active situation possible. What I mean by active is physical exercise and mental stimulation when appropriate. Sitting around does little good for anyone.

I think my next step is to use the depth gauge on my caliper to measure the actual firing pin protrusion, and if it is much less than .050", I will redo it. It's an excellent short story. My sister has a book of Sci Fi short stories and this was one of them. I had no idea it was made into a movie but not surprised they f'd it up. It seemed to be that the future people would visit disasters right before they hit. One of them would make symphony's made up of human suffering. They present day guy fell for the future girl but it was a one way street. She viewed him as a pet.

Most of the pain associated with tooth issues is because of inflammation or swelling causing compression of nerve endings. In my experience, a small tab of aspirin in the area does away with 90% of the pain.

Maybe its our culture. You call up already frustrated about a problem with the company's product, and two minutes into your conversation, the American "customer service representative" on the other end has hijacked your time so that they can talk about themselves.

He was trying to get us to do some big expensive eye treatment where they scrap her cornea flat pack antibiotics in her eye and then sew it shut for two weeks. We said we would have to think about it.

Maybe its our culture. You call up already frustrated about a problem with the company's product, and two minutes into your conversation, the American "customer service representative" on the other end has hijacked your time so that they can talk about themselves.

The human body (and apparently dogs too) has an amazing ability to heal itself given time.

I remember a bunch of years back when Ebola was a big, big thing. I read up on how some people died while others survived. I came up with a theory that the end-stage blood coagulation was the cause of death. That a widely available prescription drug would keep the blood from coagulating and give the patients body time to fight off the Ebola. Somehow my internet theory got to some health care peeps.

It is now considered a 'controversial' treatment.

741 They are trying to make it sound like acceptable trade off for all of the good things they do!

Like that one student that flummoxed Bobby Occasio Cortez by asking for specifics rather than platitudes, it seems that our betters are particularly skilled in avoiding details and stating problems or solutions in the most ambiguous and amorphous ways.

Some of the oddest metaphors and abuse of the language come out of them trying to explain how to stand a puddle on its edge.

Sort of like listening to streaming radio where the only advertisers are "male enhancement" products, and because everyone know that what they are selling isn't even good enough to earn the title "snake oil", the FTC and legal department has created a unique niche of marketing that has someone talking up a product without ever making any actionable claims.

"Our customers rave about..." You are supposed to trigger on the word "rave" and eisegete "are happily excited and can't stop publicly praising" when "rave" can also mean "talk wildly or incoherently as if one were delirious or insane".

That is how advertisements are to me now. I listen to all of the marketing techniques and the ways they skirt being sued for false advertising, or for words and phrases that are deliberately deceptive but not out lying.

Sadly, this skill is also one of the top talents to have to be a Leftist today.

They put those ordering kiosk's in our McDonalds here after they renovated the place over the winter. Two people no longer have jobs because of them.

They still have two regular registers at the front but no one is ever there.

Perhaps. The $15-20 would likely have to factor in total desk costs, management overhead, etc. I would think that some of that could be mitigated by work-at-home and that the native English speaker could get the job done in a third of the time due to not having to repeat themselves or completely missing the cultural elements within the conversation.

There is some merit in the work at home thing as it does bring down costs to the employer. We are seeing an ever increasing number of Federal Government "virtual" jobs advertised on USA Jobs.

What is often referred to as 'Pricing yourself out of a job'

I almost look forward to the time when a fast food brand becomes so selective that they refuse to wait on anyone who will/can not use the kiosk.

761 There is some merit in the work at home thing as it does bring down costs to the employer.

The office is literally 3200 steps away from my door, yet I work nearly 100% remote. I don't use traffic as an excuse because of the short distance, but traffic in CTX is awful and getting worse by the day because of the Seattle levels of mismanagement, NIMBY and incompetence at play.

I turn down new opportunities several times a week because it would require me to go out in that mess, then go to an office full of disruptions, exposure to every kid's disease (brought to work through their parents), and pointless meetings that I have to feign interest in.

I like the ability to work outside "standard" hours.
