Green, Carbon-Neutral, Eco-Friendly? My Ass!

I like the idea of going on the offense! Attack these neo-Luddites at every opportunity. Point out how incredibly destructive their so-called green energy projects are! They waste fuel, kill birds, destroy America's grand vistas, take up huge amounts of land (who wants a solar panel array in their backyards?), and decrease our access to the marvels of a free-market economy and Western technology.

turbine deicer.jpg
[Hat Tip: XBradTC]

Personally, as I have ranted in the past, the perfect energy plan is to build about 100 standardized nuclear power plants while technology advances in battery development and other market-based answers to future energy challenges.

The good news is that we are flush with clean-burning natural gas, thanks to the wonders of fracking, so we have plenty of time to perfect other energy sources. Hell, oil is damned clean too! There are many more cars in America today than compared to my youth in the 19-mumble-mumble-mumble, and they are better, faster, safer and more comfortable, all while polluting at a mere fraction of their predecessors. In fact. America is much, much cleaner and less polluted than it was just a generation or two ago, and I fully expect that trend to continue!

The free market can do anything when it is allowed to....so our job as conservatives is to unleash that power and reap the benefits!

And drink good whiskey. And eat rare steaks. And hit the X when we shoot.

211 A recurring theme: everything in Australia is trying to kill you...

Black Kite 'Firehawks' are birds that deliberately spread fires in Australia by carrying burning twigs in their beaks and talons and dropping them in other areas in order to start new fires and drive out insects and small animals so they can feed on them http://ow.ly/hJ2y30o4Gz2

6 We see a lot of turbines in farm fields in MI. A perfect place for them since these are wide open spaces. We view them from the highway. Not sure how they look from the residential areas away from the farms. My understanding is that the farmer is paid for the use of their land and receives free electricity. Not sure if that is universal.
My issue is with the short lifespan of the turbines and their cost. It cannot be cost effective.

Cool picture of the de-icing on that blade. I never thought of that necessity.

Everything has a cost. I have a slew of tiny little solar panels on my walkway lights. Even with rechargeable batteries, those batteries have a life expectancy. The panels have to be cleaned occasionally, the snow knocked off of them, or nothing. Dismantling all of them to get to the batteries is an entire mornings work.

Some people go through life acquiring an encyclopedic knowledge of the world, while our 'friends' on the left never acquire much more then a 'dictionary' level of knowledge.

But solar! Wind! New Green Deal!

Could see it from the lake and the NRC regulated our lake's depth but otherwise it took up less space then solar or turbines and quieter and less obtrusive then solar and turbines.

20 Everything has a cost.

---

I am 100% comfortable in saying that, when looked at cradle-to-grave, everything costs exactly the same.

My recent favorite is paper straws as a response to some non-existent problem that doesn't happen in any meaningful way in the United States.

They are HUGE. I'd say three to five times thicker than a plastic straw. And you know what paper straws don't do in a landfill without exposure to water and light? Decompose. Those thick-ass straws are taking up four or five times the space of plastic straws.

Even better is that I'm positive it takes more energy to produce and definitely to store and ship.

Composting them? Sure, but you've got to be sure to account for water and equipment to produce "green" straws, as well as land, water, and fuel to move and manage the compost on the other end.

I'd be willing to bet zero net gain, and often waste, on anything outside of a few limited things (mostly metals).

When I called my small city to protest the sales/marketing of using tax money in support of a buying club for so-called green power generation, I was informed of the mantra we need to experience and understand:

Green Energy = Good; Brown Energy (anything not assigned green) = Bad.

We can assemble our green energy certificates (anyone else remember SandH Green Stamps) to feel good about ourselves without even the fiction of a meaningless participation trophy or trade those certificates with other suckers for something real. What a scam.

79 Composting them? Sure, but you've got to be sure to account for water and equipment to produce "green" straws, as well as land, water, and fuel to move and manage the compost on the other end.

I'd be willing to bet zero net gain, and often waste, on anything outside of a few limited things (mostly metals).

We had paper straws when I was a yute. It was all there were. Thick ones for milkshakes, thin ones for soda pop. They were made of waxed paper wrapped in a spiral fashion. They could be flattened pretty easily. Plastic straws didn't come about until the late 1970's, IIRC. The new "paper" straws seem to be extruded from wood pulp, and don't have a spiral construction.

Architects speakers gushed about how awesome everything LEED is. The a economics guy spoke and showed that for many LEED items the break even is never. But, just using more efficient conventional heating and cooling, insulation, siting, etc. (like building designers should anyway) there are real energy savings... but the alternative stuff, nah, never.

allow me to illustrate what is really behind all of those windfarms in West Texas, which are great propaganda tos ay "look how much Green Energy Texas generates!" To be clear, most don't realize that Texas has by far the most installed Wind Power capacity in the nation, with 23,262 MW installed capacity, and 5,554 MW more under construction. Supposedly Enviro friendly California only has 5,686 MW of wind power installed, with 55 under construction. Texas is clearly the Wind Power Capitol of the Nation. So why has so much been built? You can thank Jimmy Carter, who in 1977 made reprocessing Nuc Waste Illegal.

Why he did that? He was involved in having to clean up a reactor that had malfunctioned due to bad design, and was not pro nuclear power.

He knew that stopping reprocessing of waste would create a huge problem for the US Nuclear industries, as we see today.

To be fair, I think solar panels and electric cars and the sort are pretty cool.

And maybe someday they will get to the point where it's practical to buy and install them. I would love to be able to generate my own power, that's pretty badass.

But for now, solar is not practical in most locations, and batteries are full of deadly and corrosive chemicals, have a finite life span, and a fuckton of them are required to store up enough energy to level out the times of day when the sun isn't shining.

Another issue is that the places that get the most sun and where solar seems to make sense tend to be very warm places, where air conditioning is a necessity. And DC solar arrays can't easily handle the surge from AC compressors.

Elon Musk claims that Tesla is working on the air conditioning issue and is trying to invent a whole new way of cooling buildings that doesn't have immense power draws... so, maybe that issue will be solved.

But for now -- solar is just not that practical.

Windmills are just fucking stupid and have never made sense and likely never will.

107 The Green New Deal is not a plan, no matter what Chiquita Khrushchev and Beto! say. It only establishes a GOAL of eliminating US carbon emissions in 12 years, so we don't die. A real plan has something called a SCHEDULE.

So, Ms Chiquita, could we delay all carbon reducing changes until Year 11 and still save ourselves? Or, if we reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent beginning 6 years from now, could we buy ourselves another 25 years to extinction? Either case, or anything in-between, significantly changes the means, methods, and likely reduces the near-term costs, of saving ourselves.

If anyone asked Ms Chiquita or Beto! such questions, all they could come back with is BS. They have no plan, only a goal of killing-off all US hydrocarbon usage.

125 So, to understand why Texas has so much wind power, you need to know 3 things: 1st, Texas has it's own electrical grid, separate from the other 49 states, 2nd, Wind power is actually terrible for being hooked up to a grid, since it is intermittent and can ramp up with no warning, and shut down for days with equally little warning, and 3) wind power is heavily subsidized at both state and federal levels.

So, since wind power is intermittent, but it has to be stable to be hooked up to the grid, every wind plant is backed up by nat gas burners - and in fact, these nat gas burners are what are actually running 40% to 60% of the time. BUT they still get the subsidized wind power rates, which is IMMENSELY profitable!

So in fact, Wind Power is in effect a scheme to double or triple the price an energy company can get for it's nat gas plants. And everyone knows it, both in industry, and government, and no one says anything, because that would get all the Enviro's upset. And Industry has decided that it's better to keep the Enviro's happy, make the proles feel virtuous, and make incredible profits.

And that, in just about any permutation, is what any Green Deal is all about.

134 There is nothing inherently wrong with "green" energy generation other than it has been vastly oversold. For small, discrete applications it can be a good solution but the state of technology of things like battery storage is at least a generation or two away for massive, utility scale projects as a replacement for fossil fuels or nuclear.

Block Island sits about 12 miles off the RI coast. Most of the power for the island was generated by diesel generators and consequently it had some of the most exorbitant energy prices in the country.

The island recently put up 5 offshore wind turbines to generate 30 MW of energy for the island and it works great. That's the kind of application it works perfectly for but no way in hell would that model scale to serve all of the country.

148 Something like 20 years ago I read some article about solar tiles which would look nice installed on roofs. They never made it to market. My dad was thinking about doing solar here but. A) the house roof doesn't point enough to the south so the utility company was saying the panels would have to be installed just out in horse pen area. and B) he talked to someone who had solar and told him that the insurance in case of hail taking out the system wiped out the savings/rebates.

Solar on roofs that is tied into the grid might make sense in places like Arizona where AC probably sucks up more energy during the long summer days when the panels are working.

154 Here is the answer I wrote Zombie back in early 2017, when this came up.

Taxes and regulations were lower under the barbarians. The last great Western Roman General was assassinated by a weak Emperor.

There were few defenders of the Empire and the status quo, as everyone but a privileged few disliked the government of the time. Plus education, for the elites, was out of whack with what was needed for the time. An oligarchy existed, with a classic education and manner of speech needed to be considered an elite. Not as open to new talent. And after the barbarians took over, the elites were shunted aside within two generations.

The definitive mechanism for a societal collapse is The Law of Diminishing Returns. Go long enough taking more effort to get similar results and that society will collapse.

So we're good, right? Right?

Also, didn't T. Boone Pickens dabble in wind power.... because in getting the leases under Fed rules for wind farms, he'd also have the option of extracting natural gas from the same land.

171 solar on a roof can make "sense" if electric rates are over $0.12 / kWh, imo. Especially in the SW where there is mucho sun, and the main peak rate thing is daytime for AC.

Now, how much of that is due to subsidy and poor energy planning (shutting down coal, not building more nuke), idk. But since government is not getting any smarter, those arguments are hypothetical.

there is currently a 30% rebate off taxes, for people that pay taxes. Some states offer more subsidy. In the SW at say $0.20/kWh peak rate, a 10k array could be worth $7/day on average, year round. If one can self install, that would cost maybe $15,000. That is $2500/year return ... pretty good ... 17% return, should last 25 years for the panels and wiring, inverter might not last that long.

I have a lot of south facing windows on my house. I've read that they lose 1% of the insulating gas in them per year. I had to replace one of the casement windows about ten years ago. In late fall, before I crank the heat up and we get a cold night, the other 20 plus year old windows will get condensation on the inside of them, but not the 'newer' one.

So the break even on solar is most likely based on projections from new glass and gas, not on the 20th year.

(Something interesting I've noticed is that none of my north and east facing windows ever have a condensation issue. Almost as if exposure to the more intense thermal range of the south facing windows expedites the outward migration of the insulating gas. Just something to keep in mind if thinking of purchasing replacement windows. Your north and east ones might be fine for a lot longer.)

218 Low-e replacement thermopanes 30" x 60" we only ~$75, sold as replacement glass, no frames, except the metal inside the glass to hold the glass. a custom arch would probably be much more ... maybe add stained glass at the top of the arch for some interest? or maybe it won't be that much, but sounds tricky.

225 Great post!

Here in the People's Democratic (boy, is that appropriate) Republic of California, I had occasion to drive on the Pacific Coast Highway the other day.

The brain trust has seen fit to convert one of the two lanes in each direction into a bike lane. Not added a little bike lane, but x-ed out half of an entire with zebra stripes, and THEN added a little bike lane. This is for all the non-existent cyclists out there.

But the brain trust only did this for half a dozen blocks, or so at a time, here and there. I guess the rest of the time those delightful non-existent cyclists will have to take their chances with an ordinary bike lane.

Meanwhile, you can imagine the traffic snarls this idiotic program causes, as two heavily-trafficked lanes go down to one, repeatedly. /spit

Anything I can get on my computer screen I can get on my television screens. I'm enjoying the freedom to watch music videos, older comedies, actually purchase a movie with a conservative message, and anything that suits my urges at the moment.

Cable can die, but streaming is very, very good. Freedom is good.

Hollywood may make a few cents off me per year, but only for a message I approve.

I got rid of the big sliders by doubling up narrower double hung. Aesthetically good and if (heaven forfend) I have to replace a pane, it isn't quite as spendy.

For the arch problem: I like arches, but how about the three-pane glass lights panels on top of regular doublehung? I know it is not as 'cool', but for longer-term you still have the light value without the custom cost. I'm poor and cheap, YMMV.

Replace a tail light assembly? Sure. Just clear your schedule for the afternoon, then remove the rear surround (bumper) by undoing half a dozen fasteners and bolts, undo the fasteners inside the trunk, peel back the trunk bed liner, unfasten three bolts on the assembly, then gently bump the assembly out with your hand while pushing a locking thingy-bob. Nothing to it.

And then reverse all of this, of course, with the new one.

If your equipment is fairly modern, the Logitech programmable remotes can take over the functions of most of those others in a single remote.

They ain't cheap, though.. the cheapest one that will do most of that stuff is about $50 at bestBuy.

They have a USB cable you attach to your computer. You then tell the program what models/makes of equipment you want to control. Does a pretty good job.

308 There was an article in Pop Sci recently.. 2 young college professors are proposing building small molten salt nuclear reactors as a test project. Shoulda been done decades ago.
Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at March 17, 2019 01:46 PM (438dO)

Pop Sci has drunk the Gerbil Worming kool-ade. They are dead to me.

"Molten salt" means "molten thorium salts". I don't think anyone is proposing to use molten uranium salts in a reactor. There is some belief that the waste products from thorium fission are less dangerous, or cannot be weaponized.

It's the same old same old: propose some new "safer", "non-polluting" implementation of nuclear power, which is always "right around the corner", and demand that we stop using the tried and true uranium reactors until the never-never is realized.

Uranium can be found all over the world, and where it exists at all, it often exists in a form sufficiently concentrated to make it profitable to mine it. Did you know, that back in the height of the arms race, millions of tons of brown coal were mined in North Dakota, and burned in heaps on the ground, so that uranium could be recovered from the coal ash? And that was a shitty resource, and only profitable because the demand for uranium was so high in the early '50's. We now know a whole lot more about the geology of uranium, and have blocked out reserves (meaning known, and measured deposits that can be used as bank collateral) that will last our needs for many, many years.

Thorium, OTOH, is widespread across the world in the form of the mineral monazite, which occurs exclusively as a (very) minor accessory mineral in certain types of granitic rock. There are no known occurrences of thorium naturally concentrated as veins, magmatic segregations, or chemical/biological sedimentary concentrates as are uranium, and base and precious metals are. Monazite is it. And the only place in the world where monazite can be mined is currently India, where it is found on certain ocean beaches, and has been sorted by wave action. One might think that there are other ocean beaches, elsewhere in the world, where monazite sourced from the sand of granitic rocks could be concentrated, but if any such exist, they are not well-publicized.

So India has been using thorium for nuke fuel because they have it handy to them. They even built a thorium bomb, just to prove it could be done.

I would not want to rely on a single foreign source for my energy needs, even if the thorium cycle has demonstrable advantages. The "uranium waste" problem is 100% political, and 0% technical. Deep burial in ancient, stable rock formations is the way to go.

I'll give it my best. You know the problem with low cutting heights and the engraved invitation to crab grass. Perhaps I should keep cutting heights way up until something like July. 340 "who wants a solar panel array in their backyards?"

Umm, about 80% of our mis-educated population wants them. For two generations, the schools have taught the solar religion. People want it even though it's inefficient, unreliable, never generates to predicted capacity, wastes land, etc, etc. They still want it, because "it's the future" or something.

I know a greenie who's all-in for subsidizing it out of his own taxes. And there's a hippie shop in town, put panels on his roof, financed it ENTIRELY with $80K DONATIONS from greenies. He also runs a windmill with a broken vane, which the city building inspectors are cool with.

Even here at 42deg N Latitude, where the insolation is poor, and the panels are covered with snow in the winter, they want it. We have good reliable power, a 2GW nuclear plant, but they want to use up our farmland on panels.

Another religion is trains. Voters here overwhelmingly and repeatedly say they want trains, govt-subsidized passenger trains, going from nowhere to nowhere. Not that they would ever ACTUALLY RIDE the f'n things if we had them!

So just give up. It's hopeless. America lost its mind way way back when the Whole Earth Catalog and Foxfire books came out; they're the new holy Bibles.

341 It's quite an interesting battle. Who ever thought short grass would be something like 10 times tougher than tall grass?

Don't know where you are but this is a good resource.

There are a lot of good pathologist out there. Not sure I agree with them politically...

Tall grass shades the sun. Goosegrass and crabgrass and most warm season weeds need the sunshine. Unlike warm-season grass/weeds, cool season grass seed always does best with some shade/mulch/straw. Need to get the bent to cover and shade the crab.

342 Wouldn't it make more sense to put electrical heating elements in the blades so they could de-ice themselves?

343 It makes good financial sense to buy a home with solar panels.

It makes no financial sense to install them on a home.

It's an investment that only benefits the next buyer.

Thanks for all. I have a plan now. I'm in Pennsylvania, btw.

The 'Trump story' by the way is that he uses Velvet Bentgrass at a bunch of his courses in this area. Not sure if you've ever experienced it but it has some phenomenal blade count per sq meter (150,000 blades iirc). You take your shoes and socks off and it's the most incredible carpet you've ever walked on. Putting surface is the best. Even with my mediocre green it was an eight on the Stimp. Uphill. Against the wind.

I don't know if it was personal, but the EPA banned its sale. I'm not sure if it was before or after he wanted to see Obama's birth certificate. I'd love to be able to buy it again and overseed my problem areas. But apparently not.

345 Where you are and what it seems you're trying to do, Penncross would work just fine.

Easy access. L-93 is really good. 20 Years old but works good in NC. Bulletproof.

346 I don't think "carbon" has any negative effect on either the climate or the environment. It's the greatest hoax ever perpetrated since the dawn of recorded time to claim that "carbon" is a problem.

But if we as a society actually want to reduce "carbon," there are two changes that would reduce it by about 90%, without destroying the economy or resulting in a left-totalitarian state.

Convert to compressed natural gas to power vehicles. Build small thorium-based nuclear plants to produce electricity.

The end.

347 A great business opportunity just struck me - I should start a business manufacturing and installing fake solar panels out of plywood and plastic sheets, with some silver paint. Sell and install them real cheap so people could get their virtue signaling credits with their numbers without having to actually put up with the hassle of trying to make the actual thing work.

348 (251) The Gillette stuff is gathering dust. I bought a vintage Eversharp (Schick) injector razor, and pulled out the shaving soap. No more P 'n G stuff for me.

349 I live north of a nuclear power plant. Safe, cheap. If we are serious in ending pollution, I would say 100 is about the right amount. Otherwise, it is just a power grab.

350 Electric powered stuff is really great, just as long as you have an internal combustion engine nearby to recharge it.
