102 Since we're into superheroes and comics...saw the Lego 2 Movie twice. Absolutely hilarious. Batman is featured as a tortured, self absorbed, narcissistic character. My favorite song from the soundtrack features Tiffany Haddish and Will Arnett as Batman. I tried to post the link, but it's too long.
Look for "Gotham City Guys" on youtube. Well worth it.

123 I'm watching "Scared Stiff," which is a Martin-Lewis remake of a Bob Hope film called "Ghost Breakers."
It's pretty funny, and well made, but here are some observations, which you will, of course, ignore.
1. Leith Stevens is the most underrated movie composer of all times. His score here is great as (I have come to expect) usual; but his masterpiece is the score for George Pal's "War of the Worlds." There's an option on the DVD to watch WotW with music only, and the music is perfect. It's probably on YouTube somewhere.

2. When David Bowie died, we missed out on what could have been an incredible film series--the Martin and Lewis films, remade with David Bowie as Martin, and Iggy Pop as Lewis. Tell me you wouldn't buy the boxed set.

3. Jerry Lewis' "kid" character is amazingly annoying.

We now return your television set to you.

Just be thankful for two things:

You are both grown adults with a lot of life experience.

You have the benefit of technology to keep in touch.

When I married Mrs. Mahon some 30 years ago, we were separated by the Atlantic Ocean and reams of Army paperwork to get my bride overseas, and we had only expensive telephone calls and letter writing, not to mention we were so fucking young (me 22, she 19).

252 Hey everybody. I know it's Friday night but I wanted to ask about an IMHO kinda big topic...

does anyone here know, or have thoughts on, why American entertainment so different from European entertainment?

I've noticed that especially with regard to comedy, American shows tend to mostly take place in what looks at least a little bit to be in the real world. European comedy seems to take place in a fantasy world. (Latin American comedy seems similar to European, as well.)

Maybe because entertainment is more "needed/necessary" for mental escape in other countries, than it is in the USA? I dunno.

Funny you should mention this. I watch a lot of Pluto TV (it's free). And there's a BBC sitcom (several years old judging from the mobile phones) called The IT Crowd. It takes place in a typical London office, but there is an oddly surreal element to it that is both funny and jarring. I like it a lot, but it departs from reality, like a dream that has a plot, but then there's that one strange guy who works in that one room. No, No! Don't open that door!

turns out he's into Cradle of Filth.

The band?

275 Sad here.

Dad is in nursing home, which has been *good* for him.

However:His 'girlfriend' has been picking over the family heirlooms when she visits. So many things now *missing*... "Oh, your father gave _______ to me." (Not sure how much of that is true.)

Fortunately, she lives a couple of hours away. Unfortunately, she has a key to his house and has a sister just a couple of blocks away. Who know where the key really is? And this sister wants a whole bunch of Dad's stuff... oh, how convenient.

Every time I stop by the house, particularly after she visits, seems more stuff is gone, without any comment.

I'm dedicating this weekend to removing the rest of the heirloom china, crystal, etc that I have room for but sheesh!!

None of my siblings have yet had the chance to 'speak up for' *ANYTHING*.

I'm brokenhearted and ****really**** pissed off.

279 does anyone here know, or have thoughts on, why American entertainment so different from European entertainment?

I've noticed that especially with regard to comedy, American shows tend to mostly take place in what looks at least a little bit to be in the real world. European comedy seems to take place in a fantasy world. (Latin American comedy seems similar to European, as well.)

Maybe because entertainment is more "needed/necessary" for mental escape in other countries, than it is in the USA? I dunno.
Posted by: qdpsteve at March 15, 2019 11:20 PM (miE9U)

I don't watch a lot of tv, but I think we make expensive sets, and Europe will make cheap sets so the actually comedy is more important, and plays into the cheap sets. But, like I started with, I don't watch a lot of it.

I'm not steeped in European offerings except for The Benny Hill Show and what I accidentally see from Eurovision. I see what you're getting at -- American comedies gravitate to situational stories while European stuff is more farcical.

317 OK, I learned two things. One is a nautical term I didn't know about. The other is that I've been badly misinterpreting a certain bit of corporate-speak.

I always thought the room where you turn the wheel of a ship is the "helm." This is not the case. The helm is the wheel itself, the rudder, and the assembly in between. The room with the the user interface (the wheel) of the helm inside is the "wheelhouse."

Whenever I've heard this trendy word in the annoying corporate context, I didn't know this, so it just presented in my mind as how it seemed at the times people used it toward me.

When people said "This is in YD's wheelhouse," I never thought of steering anything, or leadership.

I thought of a Dickensian mill where I'm turning a wheel, along with some others, to grind something out.

I think there may be a bit of daylight between the way me and my bosses see things.

It is a difficult little nut to fuck as it is progressive and different based on your setup. Change one thing and the anti-skate is no longer tuned.

Honestly, I am getting to the camp of little to none is best. But that requires some tight tolerances, fresh bearings and proper lubrication to go along with a dialed setup.

In most cases, a letter from his M.D. stipulating that he's not competent to handle his own affairs, presented in conjunction with your POA to a Family Court Judge, and it's gavel time in your favor.

The fact that he's already in a nursing home is just further evidence, there.

He doesn't have to be declared to be a drooling idiot, by the way. Merely "erratic" in terms of wisdom, judgment, decision making...the Dr. affirming those things will usually suffice.

Bonus. With that declaration, your Dad can NO LONGER revoke that POA.

Not fun, not easy. But, you've got to use every tool at your disposal, here.

First though.

410 IMPORTANT message to parents who use public baby changers!

Basically pad the crap out of the surface with as many paper things you can find (to hell with eco), put baby in straight jacket, and change diaper after using germ-killing wipes.

It took me and DIL to keep baby from touching icky surfaces. He thought it all a blast, as that is how he rolls.

HOWEVER, and this is the important urgent message:
When our baby human's diaper was changed without him touching contaminated surfaces due to his germophobe Nana...a cat lady came in with a cat carrier and used the diaper changing table! With her cat pooping on a blue disposable thing.

I had a gin and tonic to recover. So, not only do you have to worry about, oh, ebola and such, but also cat germs...those from poo that eat your brain or something that warn pregnant women not to change kitty litter (which explains my son's ex-girlfriend's family completely, the rotting cat-poo disease of brains).

Then, following this horror, at the next airport I saw a Mama fling her toddler girl on table. No wiping or anything of table. No paper towel things on surface. Toddler was picking her nose and licking stuff. Clean her and then done! Granted that kid's immune system may be far better than mine, but GROSS.

Install very obvious padlock hasps on that door and frame. At least two, one high, one low. Yeah, it'll deface the door, you can fix that later.

The window. Cut a dowel to fit in the slider tracks, wedge it in tightly.

Make NO secret of fortifying that room, and do it strong and do it right.

Don't depend on a re-keyed interior lock in a knob to her type out of there. She'll just call a different locksmith.

Oh, and get a lawyer to write up a suitable "NO TRESPASSING" notice for you to tack up on that door, too.

Someone upthread suggested supplying the kitchen with cheap dishes n' stuff, so that the house remains functional even with all the good stuff locked up.

Pro tip for cheapest stuff.

Go to Thrift Store, and get them to help you assemble a "kitchen in a box", with everything needed, at one low, flat price. It'll be cheaper than item by item, and easier, too.

437 JQ....I am a Moronette from the past who swoops in with insomnia driving husband to his office...that has a bed. ha.

Anyway, these "girlfriends" prey on elderly gentlemen. You are darn right she is stealing stuff.

This happened to my great-uncle after my great-aunt was moved to a nursing home, under care of her niece (my aunt) in another town. Basically, even when youngish, great uncle was weird.

Anyway, all of great-aunt's stuff was to go to my aunt. A "care giver" installed herself with great-uncle and basically stole jewelry and furniture. She had a history of this, apparently, in that Southern town...unknown til great-uncle died.

You are absolutely within rights to do whatever is needed to save what your father would want you to have. Light a fuse under your sibling's arses. Maybe they don't want to deal with it. We all have one of those.

Best wishes.

What about hiding as much of the valuable as you can, but leave out one or two "bait" items that are indelibly, but discreetly marked? Then hire a PI to stake the place out, and follow her if she heads out with any goods in hand, to find out where she's taking them. If you get really lucky, you might find where the previously-stolen stuff was stashed or fenced.

Or maybe hide a cellular tracking device inside something she is likely to steal?

Not a stranger. Just... *emboldened* because Dad has spoiled her with $$$ and gifts for a while.

She knows I'm ON TO her. That's why she made off w/as much as she could last visit, once she took Dad back to nursing home. (He can leave temporarily if properly "checked out" to a responsible adult).

But, he loves her. And really, he's in highest spirits when she visits. I know it's actually GOOD FOR HIM to see her. This is what troubles me the most about 'being the bitch' wrt "stuff". She has been a good friend/lover to him for quite a few years.

I love the depth and clarity of digital... hearing things that were mostly inaudible on the vinyl versions... but there is just something about the analog/mechanical amplification that cannot be recreated. To flash or not to flash, that is the question. ASRock has released v2.0 of the BIOS for my screamer's motherboard.

The z390 chipset is pretty new, and there are some stability problems and other weird behavior I'm hoping they're getting ironed out. On the other hand, there may be bugs.

Prudence would dictate I wait a couple of weeks and see what happens with others.

I can't do it remotely from here at Miley's, though, so I'm safe for the time being.

Well, I could do it remotely if I bought the $$$ out-of-band Intel management software. That allows you to do things like flash firmware and dick with BIOS setting remotely.

Digital is too clean and too hard edged. Part of it is compression to reduce bandwidth, and I swear that part of it is that the digital sound does not have the sine type of waves that the old tube driven stuff has.

The second part may be all bollocks, but that is what the sound feels to me: some digital has a sharp edge to it like holding exactly machined Aluminum, and the tube amplifiers have a feel like cast bronze.

Now, of course, nothing with a tube can cram 8 hours of recordings onto a device the size of my thumb, so digital is here to stay

496 A few guys at work use head phones and digital recording, often thought to do it.

Posted by: Skip at March 16, 2019 01:39 AM (BbGew)

497 Now, of course, nothing with a tube can cram 8 hours of recordings onto a device the size of my thumb, so digital is here to stay
Posted by: Kindltot at March 16, 2019 01:35 AM (mUa7G)

I think to do the D/A conversion with tubes would take a whole Univac worth of 12AU7's, so that's kind of out of the question, but I think a good quality mp3 player feeding a vacuum tube amp would sound about as good as digital could be made to sound. And there are better codecs than mp3, too.

Interestingly, two of them still send my a card on the Korean New Year with a $20 bill in it. I haven't seen most of them in 10-12 years, but I always treated them as if they were family.

I can't really say that bartending is the best profession in the world, because it isn't. But I can say I have met a lot of very interesting people, made a lot of friends, and have received more kindness from people. It gives me faith in humanity.

The law, and *the family* are on my side.

Even Dad has come to realize what's been going on-- I had to point out a few particulars to him, and he's told her to back off.

Remains to be seen whether she complies. And I don't know if her (local) sister is 'in on it'...

I don't intend to give her the chance to disregard his wishes, iykwim.

Total cleanout has begun, and will continue all weekend.

507 I lost the Analog war in the Divorce of '99.

All my vinyl. And the best turntable JVC ever made. I'd have to look up the nomenclature, but it was a digitally controlled, direct drive unit. The only "automatic" function to the tonearm, was a "push-up" bar, to lift it away from a completed LP.

Factory Specs:

Tracking Error: "Not Measurable"

Wow/Flutter: "Not Measurable"

Something like "QL-Y75" but like I said, I'd have to look it up.

Micro Acoustic's top of the line, Direct Electret cartridge and stylus.

That was pretty much the Last Word for advanced cartridges before the Digital Era.

Given that I was moving onto a 30 ft. sloop, from a 2,200 sq. ft. house, it wasn't like I could bring the Hi Fi with me.

But damn.

That was one High Horsepower Turntable, even by modern Audiophile standards.

520 ...QL-A 75

That one.

It shipped with both a straight and an "S" curved tone-arm. Trying both, I opted for the straight.

Lower mass for the win.

Now then. Research the Micro-Acoustic line of Direct Electret cartridges and stylus, of the late 80s, early 90s.

Check out their "Square Wave" response times to a signal generator, vs conventional moving magnet or moving coil cartridges.

The Analog Era pretty much ended about five years too soon.

Audio perfection was damn near on the horizon, and would've made for a BETTER digital age, had it been allowed to mature.

Sometimes, "progress" is a setback.

Posted by: My life is insanity at March 16, 2019 06:05 AM (Z/jzm)

****

Stretching well, before and after a workout, along with a cold shower (post workout) will alleviate a lot of post workout aches and pains. I try and keep the use of Tylenol etc. to a minimum (my liver gets enough of a workout from my drinking!) and try and use aspirin where appropriate (low dose of aspirin on a regular basis has been shown to be good for heart disease issues. That being said if you have any active bleeding situation - such as bruising - it may not be so good as it does tend to act as a mild anticoagulant). As I said to Mrs. Redux: Try one aspirin first. If it doesn't work, then go to two. One usually does the trick for me. Same for Tylenol. Recommended dosage on the bottle is geared toward the average person - but that may not be you. The dosage that works on a 300 Lb man is not necessarily the dosage that should be used on Mrs. Redux, she's a tiny 99Lbs!! (but packed full of fire as she is, after all, Colombian! As some of you know).

Anyway - you get my drift. Go low tech solution first. Try ice on the area of concern, post workout, or cold water after workouts in the shower. Pineapple as an anti-inflammatory is good too (don't laugh, it works) or a nice massage to loosen up those muscles. Applied heat a day or so later is good; or, simply, a day off from working out. Give the body time to recover.

Drugs, even Tylenol and aspirin, are to be used very, very sparingly.

Anyway - just some advise form a former Track and Field runner/Cross country runner and coach. (Yes Publius has done a lot of things in his life - but its just because I am lucky enough to have lived a long time!

Posted by: Publius Redux at March 16, 2019 07:31 AM (rOP1z)

559 ^^^
thanks! I've heard about the pineapple- bromeine?- i think is the anti-inflammatory in it. Aspirin causes hives when i take it so tylenol is my go to drug in moderation.

My back issues started about 30 years ago.

Herniated disc (area that affects sciatic nerve) that has since healed, and degenerating discs in my lower back are the culprits.

I did the chiropractic route with the herniated disc. (Chiro had me see a neuro surgeon first, and he agreed no surgery needed - which i did not want!)

6 months of a lot of laying on my back, chiro, and physical therapy with stretching, strengthening and resistance exercises did the trick. And i was really good about doing the daily routine for years. Once i started slacking off and had no issues it became easier to miss a day or ten.

Now that I'm 29 - - - i should know better than to over-do it, but i think I'm still 5 - - - or something!
