What about your LOSSSSSSSEZZZZ, Brah?

berkeley food pyramid.jpg

So I went to my doctor for a physical recently, and I was shocked when I weighed in at 199 lbs. For years, I've been 188-190 lbs., which is overweight, but stable, so I wasn't inclined to do anything about it. I ate what I wanted to, and didn't think too much about it. But after my shoulder injury, I was flat on my back for a month, and although I don't remember much, I was most likely eating lots of that high-carb hospital food, and I'm think this is what caused the weight gain. So when my doctor asked me if I had any concerns about my health, I told him, yeah, I'm a gross fat pig and I need to do lose some weight.

So he recommended the Mediterranean Diet.

I did not like the Meditteranean Diet.

Some diets are low fat. Some are low carb. Many are low sugar, or low salt. The Mediterranean Diet appears to be low everything. Oh, but you can drink a glass of wine a day on the Mediterranean Diet. I'm not a big drinker. You can eat lots of nuts on the Mediterranean Diet. Yeah, well, who cares? I think my doc recommended it because I have a history of heart disease and it's a very "heart healthy" diet.

I'm not knocking the Mediterranean diet, I know it works for a lot of people, but it just seemed overly restrictive to me, such that I'd be too tempted to cheat. I didn't want to fail.

Also, Mrs. Muse and I discussed it and she'd have to revamp pretty much her entire cooking repertoire. She suggested the Weight Watchers diet plan, which she has used in the past and since she is familiar with it, we could both do it together.

The way WW works is that each different type of food is assigned a point value based on a complex formula, and you are alloted a certain number of points per day based on age, gender, height, weight, and the amount of exercise you get. So every time you eat something you need to deduct its points from your daily total, and when you get to 0, that's it, you're done for the day.

There's a WW "bible" available that is simply a big dictionary of foods and their respective point values. Mrs. Muse also has a WW calculator that has a built-in function that determines point values from the ingredients. High carb and high sugar foods are very expensive, i.e. their point counts are high. A slice of pizza is worth 7 points. All fresh fruit is worth 0 points. Vegetables are low, like 1 or 0 points. My height and weight are such that I get 26 points per day. There aren't any "forbidden" foods, just foods that are very expensive in points, so you'll use up your points really fast if you eat them.

We started the new diet in the first week in January. Mrs. Muse keeps track of her points in a little diary, but I thought this is a perfect job for a spreadsheet, so I fired up Excel, entered a few subtraction formulas, and hey presto, my daily food diary was good to go.

Oh, and the other thing I did was to change soft drinks. Pepai is one of my bad habits. I love the stuff; I drink a can a day. I really didn't want to give that up, but it's a bunch of empty calories and sugar and each 12-oz. can is 4 WW points, points which can be better used elsewhere. So I had Mrs. Muse start buying 'Pepsi 0' instead, which has 0 sugar, 0 fat, 0 carbs, and, most importantly, 0 WW points. And it doesn't taste too awfully different than the regular Pepsi I was drinking before. So this is something I can live with.

So, how'm I doing?

Pretty well, actually. We weigh ourselves every Saturday morning and keep a log. I started out at 199 lbs., and as of last Saturday, I was at 183.5 lbs. I don't see much of a difference when I look at my belly in the mirror, but I have had to cinch up my belt tighter and tighter and now I had to switch to smaller-sized jeans. When I got out of the hospital last year, we had to buy size 40 because I had blimped up, but now I'm back down to the size 38 jeans I was wearing before.

My goal is to lose another 15 more pounds. 20 would be better, but I'd be satisfied with 15.

I like the WW diet because the system is an easy way to maintain discipline. Every day I have to sit at my computer and type in everything I've eaten, look at the current point total, and plan the rest of my eating for that day accordingly. I saw my doc in February after I had been dieting for about a month, and he was pleased at my weight loss. I didn't tell him I was doing WW and not the Mediterranean diet. He did tell me that losing weight was easy. The hard part is keeping it off. I believe him. I know I can't revert back to my old eating habits when I reach my goal weight. I will have to follow the diet for the rest of my life. This, by the way, is all new to me. I've never been on a diet before. Never in my life before now have I denied myself any food I wanted to eat.

One more thing: in order to fit with the WW point system, I have to eat the set quantities they prescribe for each item. So a T-Bone steak is something like 5 points, but that's for 3 ounces, not 12. That's not a lot of steak, but I don't need a lot. I think much of the WW effectiveness is coming from the greatly reduced quantities of food I'm consuming. I estimate I have reduced the sheer volume of food intake by about 50%, maybe a bit more. In the back of my mind, I've had this nagging little voice telling me I could survive on much less food, and so far, that has proven to be right.

Seems like every time I lose a little weight, I go nuts and gain it all back. I need a diet I can really stick to, forever, which is the hardest part.

13 Congrats on your diet success. Whatever works, works, and is worth celebrating. We're all pretty different in that respect; someday, someone will sort all that out.

For me, avoiding carbs is Job One. If I do that, everything else falls into place. Lately I found out I can gain weight even if my only carb is brown rice, and just when I learned to like it, and properly decorate it with things like over-easy duck eggs and country ham slivers. I'd complain, but I get to eat bacon and large steaks and burgers, so who would listen?

Here is the diet plan prescribed to the original ancestor of the Atkins diet, William Banting. I don't think he went to bed sober on this one.

"Breakfast, 9am: 6oz of either beef, mutton, kidneys, broiled fish, bacon or cold meat of any kind except pork or veal; 9oz of tea or coffee without milk or sugar; a little biscuit or 1oz of dry toast.

"Lunch, 2pm: 5-6 oz of any fish except salmon, herrings or eels, or any meat except pork or veal; any vegetable except potato, parsnip or beetroot, turnip or carrot; 1oz of dry toast; fruit out of a pudding, not sweetened; any kind of poultry or game; 2-3 glasses of good claret, sherry or Madeira. Champagne, port and beer are forbidden.

"Tea, 6pm: 2-3oz of cooked fruit, a rusk or two, tea without milk or sugar.

"Supper, 9pm: 3-4oz of meat or fish similar to lunch. For nightcap, if required, a tumbler of grog (gin, whisky or brandy, without sugar) or a glass or two of claret or sherry."

26 I may not be doing it right, but KETO allows you to drink a bunch, eat all the steak and bacon and cheese you want. And its very filling. I wasn't trying to lose weight at all, but I've lost 3-4 pounds while eating more than I usually do.

Whoever recommended the book about the dr. trying to save her mom from cancer a few weeks ago though the Keto diet, thanks. Its an interesting experiment, at worst!

60 I just got weight at the doc's last week... and I'm at about my heaviest recently. That said, I feel better than I have for a while because I've been trying to be good about reducing carbs. I basically try to go low-carb 4-5 times a week. Usually Sunday-Friday, and Friday night through Saturday I'll relax a bit. I only eat between about 10am and 2pm, so as long as I either cook up something on Sundays to eat during the week, or swing by the store in the morning and pick up roast beef and cheese I'm good. The problem comes when life gets busy and my options are the sandwich shop, the other sandwich shop, the third sandwich shop, or the burger joint.

Check for reactions.
She wasn't methodical enough initially. Decided she wanted gumbo after the first 30 days. Bad gut reactions, pain, etc.

"I'm just trying to get it out where I can see it!"

75 Every year I get a new insurance company through work. And every year, we have to do this "fitness assessment". They always recommend the same high carb, low fat, low salt diet that caused the spike in heart disease. My husband's cardiologist recommends the same crap. And they want me to exercise. This would be great, except walking around in the house or outside causes my oxygen levels to drop to the low 70s. I can't seem to get around the no oxygen issue. And they know this is a condition I'm being treated for.

I hate dealing with doctors. I think I have finally convinced my husband not to put too much faith in them. They are great at cutting and stitching but not very good at nutrition.

I wound up with these greasy things. The breakthrough happened when I was at a cooking class and asked about it, and it turns out that the trick is that you want the butter and added water+stock to make an emulsion, and stay that way, even if you need to add liquid. That's all it took. Now I can make really good sauteed mushrooms, and my steak experience is like nirvana. Now all I need is for steak prices to come down.

Low salt? Yes, high salt raises your bp, and if you already have hypertension can be harmful. However, latest science says it is only temporary, and as that salt flushes through your system, down goes the bp.

That fixed itself later Saturday afternoon. Since there is nothing physically wrong with that eye, I think it might have been caused by the steroid skin cream I started using for my psoriasis a week earlier. The package insert said that vision problems is a potential side effect. I stopped using it for a couple of days and my vision returned to normal. I started it again and am using it sparingly. If the blurry vision returns, I'll stop it.

It's a long story, but psoriasis is a side effect of my cancer treatment. It's pretty bad, but is fairly tolerable as side effects go.

157 I lost 50 lbs. 2 years ago. I gained 15 of it back last year working 3rd shift. I'm back on 1st shift but am plateaued at 5'7" 190lbs. Lab numbers are good and I feel fine. I eat or drink virtually nothing processed 6 days a week. (Eggs, fruit, cheese, nuts, chicken, pork, beef, brown rice, peas, H2O.) Sunday is comfort food day. Moderation in everything...including moderation.

158 145 Physicians know diet as well as they know drugs. Diet they get from the USDA, drugs from salesmen.
Had you ignored every single recommendation of the USDA on food for the last 40 years, you would be healthier now, on average.
Animal fats are killing you! Eat poly-unsaturated fats!
Oops... those will kill you, maybe animal fats are something the human body knows what to do with.
Et cetera ad nauseum.

USDA wants a diet that works for Womenz.

Men need red meat. Its a needed element to build testosterone. Which is of course why the USDA does not want us to eat red meat.

Same with the push to get men to do Yoga. Yoga does not build testosterone, stressing major muscle groups does (squats, bench, curls).

And the other thing that builds testosterone? WINNING. Which is why they don't want kids to even keep score anymore.

They are literally destroying the things that make Men Men.

THEN I got a stomach flu. Two days worshipping at the porcelain altar.

THEN we were watching out youngest grandson.

Over. 30. Pounds.

It was like 10 days of weight training.

So I'm down about 15-16 pounds over the last month and a half.

And I really cut back on my beer intake.

Next up try some sort of low-carb diet to see if it sticks.

Mommy and daddy were worth tens of millions.

And they threw all that away just to get Precious into USC.

They were "competitive parents", going around bragging about Precious in their circle of vapid Hollywood elite friends.

Precious had to attend college and get a degree so they could have that notch in their belts.

Precious would've been a little mini-Kardashian otherwise, but their desire to have the college notch in their belt has ruined Precious.

200 Last April I started on Nutrisystem out of desperation. I wasn't sure I would like the food or stick with it, but I figured I needed to do something. Eleven months later, I've lost 74 pounds.

I like the convenience of the NS prepared food, but I also like the flexibility of eating regular food and fitting it into my diet, too. Instead of counting carbs, which I did in the past on Atkins, I count grams of protein and fiber. Breakfast is 240-360 calories, 10+ grams of proteins and 1+ gram of fiber; morning snack is 80-120 calories and 5+ grams of protein; lunch is 160-240 calories, 5+ grams of protein, 1+ gram of fiber; afternoon snack is the same as lunch (160-240 calories, 5+ gr protein, 1+ gr fiber); dinner is 240-360 calories, 10+ gr protein, 1+ gr fiber; and evening snack is 160-240 calories, 5+ gr protein, 1+ fiber. I log my food daily, and portion size is important.

I'd like to lose another twenty pounds, but lately my weight loss has slowed to a pound a week. I'm still technically overweight, but I'm okay with where I am now. I plan on sticking with Nutrisystem for another couple of months, and then I'll reevaluate.

Ditto. Although I don't know about the Keto/muscle risk you mention, I can say that the elimination of wheat from my diet (well, not precisely elimination, and not exactly a diet) had many positive effects. Let's just say I became aware of the effects of eating white-ish bread and pasta, and cut way back on both.

My diet is also relatively high fat with no ill effects. Even though for the last year a knee problem greatly reduced my exercise, there were no apparent ill effects (i.e. weight gainzz).

219 I have done paleo for 7-8 years now, sometimes more strictly, sometimes completely blowing it off for weeks at a time.

I cannot understand how anyone can walk/run for hours on end, much less get on a treadmill. I have been doing BJJ for almost 3 years now. I've tried various things over the years, but I think I'll be doing BJJ for at least the next couple of decades. If my body starts breaking down, I'd probably switch to yoga, wich can be a serious workout.

The last few weeks I've been incorporating IF (intermittent fasting) 4 or 5 days out of the week. What I'm doing is eating between 11-5, and only having black coffee and water outside that window. I've lost about 5 lbs since I started the IF.

I am 51, 6' 0", just got back under 200 lbs for the first time in a while and have something like 20% body fat. I want to lose another 5-10 lbs of fat and get to something like 15-16% body fat. Other than a couple of structural issues (loose knee, a couple of sprains from BJJ) I feel pretty much the same as I did when I was in my 20's.

230 Best diet for loss is a fasting water diet with a few calories from various foods but low intake. Preferably liquid.

I lost 32 lbs in about 2 months. Problem is it will come back like gangbusters once you start to eat again.

There has to be a formula. We didn't all get fat over a few months. I personally believe WHAT we are eating is what the problem is. Plus sedentary habits.

I got lazy and bored so I didn't do much and I quit smoking and I ballooned like pig before the Christmas slaughter.

And getting it off is difficult while staying healthy. Hard to stay slim when you don't do anything and don't care. That's where a lot of America is right now.

Plus there's a magic age where you start losing your ability to metabolize anything (plus you are more active than you think and eat less than you think you did.)

Once it starts you have to take a quick hold because any laxness will put on weight which will discourage you and make you lazy even more.

231 I just wanted to say, shoulder injury. *shudder* I broke mine about eight months ago, and i feel ya. Worst thing ever.

232 I need to get back on W Squared. Works when you work it. I gained about 15 lbs last year from stress weight thanks to a court fight with an evil relative stealing my senile father's money: I won, but I paid in blood.
Thanks for the inspiration, O Muse. Oh, you men out there? WW works even better for men: y'all lose weight on the plan at a rapid clip.

238 A while back, Ace was talking up the Time-Restricted Feeding kind of intermittent fasting. I was over 220 lbs and I wanted to lose weight. So I went with a 23-1 fast, cut all soda from my diet (I had been drinking 2 bottles of soda a day, and not those wimpy ass 20 ounce ones, I mean the manly 2 liter ones), and greatly reduced how many carbs I ate. So I ate lots of burgers, no soda and no fries. After about 8 months I was kinda worried because I had blown past my target weight of 175 and was at 163 and still falling. I added fries and breakfast cereal to the menu and I've stabilized around 165. I eat whatever I want (just not whenever) and don't count points, but still don't have soda (which makes me sad).

I can do it in one, and have. Repeatedly. And I still lost weight. But it was generally on exercise days, and most of the calories were from protein and fats. I still recommend IF/TRF.

240 Finished Chemo (Capecitabine) 4 weeks ago. Recovering from side effects. Getting an ileostomy reversal next week. Doc says high fiber diet. Going back to Keto and intermittent fasting ASAP. Yeah! Only 25 lbs to go.

FWIW, I did WW years ago and the only thing I got out of it was some great recipes I still use: Pistachio Fluff (vanilla yogurt, pistachio pudding mix, and drained crushed pineapple) and WW Gazpacho is a great chip dip.

241 Soooo much easier to fast and then eat whatever the fuck you want when you are not fasting.

Exactly. I've tried other things (Jenny, Atkins, whatever) and it was always 'No, can't have that,' and I'd end up desperately wanting what I couldn't have. Now, whenever I want to eat something it is either 'sure, why not' or 'not yet.' There is never a 'no.'

243 There is actually NOTHING wrong with drinking gallons of Pepai a day. Pepai is analogous to water, with protein, fiber and vitamins. It's basically a natural diet drink. Now...if you misspelled it and you actually mean PePee...well, you certain have a problem, you sick bastage.

244 Eliminate sugar and reduce carbs below 100g/day, working towards 50g/day.
Health will improve and weight will come off. Many have lost 100 lbs doing this.

245 Is this an open all day kind of thread? Hope so.

I started Keto this week, my first weigh in was today. I lost 15 pounds!!! In one week!!

Got the inspiration from my doctor during my annual checkup, she recommended keto due to my specific health problems. Books am primarily using are Wahls Protocol, who uses a form of Keto to treat her MS, and Josh Axe, who used modified Keto to treat his moms cancer. I have inflammation problems, the first thing I noticed was my feet and joints have much less pain. Excited to see what week 2 brings!

Lots of good YouTube vids too and reddit Keto subforums. I did a TON of research the month before I started and have a notebook am filling to keep all that info in one handy place. Notebook for Keto tips and one for my recipes. I was already gluten free and subbing zucchini and cauliflower for pasta and rice so I felt ahead of the game.

Best part is the diet has, at least this week, killed off all desire for carbs and sugar. I usually Dream about good bakery breads and pastas and European chocolate, those are my downfalls, and now I do not want them at all. It is so crazy.

One downside: I have had super bad Keto flu the last 2 days, I think due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Hope to correct that and clear it up this week.

246 I'll give you one tip: I've started drinking a drink called Spindrift.

Spindrift is fizzy water with a small amount of fruit juice mixed in. Depending on what kind of fruit, a 12-ounce can of Spindrift will have from 1 to 13 Calories.

My favorite is the Blackberry, which has that decadent 13 Calories. But a close second is the Lime, which is 4 Calories. Third place is Raspberry-Lime, which is 9 Calories. I don't have a store near me selling Lemon but the web site says that is 1 Calorie.

IMHO, best served very cold.

Obviously this isn't going to taste like Sprite given that it's missing over 100 Calories worth of sugar, but I do like the taste of Spindrift. And I consider it guilt-free, close enough to zero Calories that I can just have one anytime.

They brag that they don't use any "natural flavors". They use fruit juice, and sparkling water. They claim that some pretty weird stuff can be called "natural flavors" but with their product you always know exactly what you are getting.

Nobody is paying me to shill for these guys, I just like the product.
