Copenhagen Harbour By Moonlight
Johan Christian Dahl

So...some asshole posted a really crappy piece of art yesterday. Hopefully this will be partial compensation* for the hideousness of it. When I find the culprit he will be dealt with...harshly!

59 It looks like Venice. Here's what I think happened. Dahl was commissioned to paint the lagoon and then did it at night because that was when all the prostitutes were out. But, the Doge wanted it in the daytime, so he stiffed Dahl. Dahl tried to unload it elsewhere and finally found a buyer in Denmark. Not hard, since the Danes are notoriously early to bed and had no idea what Copenhagen harbor looked like at night.

I've heard that's more or less how the semiauto ban in Australia went down: in the "buyback" (aka confiscation) the govt. only got about 1/4 of the privately owned semiautos thought to exist in country. Rather than push the argument, the govt. proclaimed "mission accomplished" and left it at that. Sort of like the NY's "Assault Weapons" registry which got less than 10% compliance (most of which were LE connected firearms).

https://bit.ly/2TWu0lq

It's starting to look like the Russia collusion crap was at least a partial cover for interference by Ukraine and an attempt to trash Russia for the benefit of Ukraine.

McCain and his uniparty colleagues throughout the government including the CIA and State Dept were deeply involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and almost universally came down on the side of Ukraine including installing much of their government after the revolution in Ukraine in 2014 that deposed pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.

One of the foreign dignitaries asked to speak at McCain's funeral, a funeral Donald Trump was pointedly not invited to attend, was the current president of Ukraine and longtime McCain friend Petro Poroshenko.

pay taxes on it, taxing it again is fundamentally unfair.

I think taxing remittances is a bad idea.

Sorry, still disagree.

We have a crisis. An emergency that has been building for years.

Better to make the immigrants of whatever status pay for it than American citizens.

Keep ALL immigration "safe, legal and rare" until the emergency situation is resolves.

But at least the sanitized version of Lincoln we know from school, is nothing like the commie Obama that fought to divide us, not keep us united.

224 175 I see it is now being reported that the plane captain of the Ethiopian 737 Max-8 was not trained on type.

It has happened before on the 737. British Midlands Flt 92 suffered engine problems. Crew was not familiar with the changes in the then new model 737-400. They shut down what they think is the faulty engine and problems vanish, until landing and the 'working' engine grenades.

https://youtu.be/NKxjPzqpFj0

Ironically, that's basically the plot of a pretty good 1964 Glenn Ford movie, "Fate is the Hunter". He's an FAA investigator trying to learn why a plane with one good engine crashed.

Boeing's problems are getting worse each day, because it's looking like this wasn't just a "crew error" problem. It was reported yesterday that the airplane involved in the Lion Air crash in Indonesia should have crashed the day before, except by chance there was a senior, experienced pilot riding along in the jump seat, and he knew how to quickly disable the autopilot when the plane started to nosedive. The next, day, different crew, no one in the cockpit knew what had just happened the day before.

It looks like Boeing has built a plane where Otto the Autopilot is a psycho serial killer, and he tries to take over whenever the human pilot looks away.

"Otto, pull out of the dive!!!!"
"I'm sorry, but I can't do that, Dave."

238 I really don't understand all the serious discussion of Democrats proposing to get rid of the electoral college. This is a Constitutional provision. To change the Constitution, you need to follow the amendment process in the Constitution. This requires (1) 2/3 of both the House and Senate to agree to propose an amendment and (2) 3/4 of the States to agree to the change. I can't imagine small and midsize states agreeing to give up power and let California and New York decide who the President is. It's a nonstarter. Yet "serious discussion" without any mention of the Constitution's amendment hurdles. I just wish some "reporter" would specifically ask the Fake Indian why the smaller states would ever in a million years agree to this and, once she's agreed they wouldn't, ask her why the fuck she is wasting everyone's time with a DOA proposal?

It's the Popular Vote method.

Each state agrees to proportion its votes based on who wins the popular vote nationwide. It only takes effect when states with 270+ electoral votes total establish the method.

It's never been challenged in court, but I get the feeling that it wouldn't survive based on some equal protection stuff.

I just watched another Charlie Kaufman movie and realized we have never mentioned anything about his movies on the thread (not that I'm aware of). I know he might be popular with the chi-chi set of douchebags but I think a lot of his writing is really clever. He's got enough movies to talk about and I'm sure everyone has seen a couple of them, at least, so it might make good fodder for a future movie thread.

The movie I just saw was Synecdoche, New York ... which really grew on me.

261 Any comparison between Obama and Lincoln is stupid. Just from a basic style perspective, the comparison is laughable.

Lincoln was hated by the political class because of his uncouthness. Obama was lauded because of his style.

Lincoln was great company with many folksy tales. Obama, by all accounts, is an incredible bore who can only talk about himself.

Bottom line is they want the most populous states, such as CA, to control the country, because through open borders and other policies that attract serfs (govt. entitlements) they are ensuring they have the highest populations.

First of all, states are not allowed to enter into any compacts with one another without Congress' approval.

Secondly, I would say that it is clearly a violation of the Constitution's main purpose of creating a "federal" government, not a national one.

And thirdly, it would certainly dilute the votes of the states' citizens. Normally, this would have been meaningless with the old idea that each state has full control over how it selects its Presidential electors ... but with the suffrage amendments that passed later that became, mostly, inoperative (as it was rendered less than meaningless for state Senators, too).

Therefore, I predict that the SCOTUS will allow the states to circumvent the Constitution and claim that the Constitution, itself, requires that.

Posted by: ALH
Hopefully never.

Since the Supreme Court is barred from making "advisory" decisions, no case of this kind can go before them until after it actually has taken effect, and an election has been affected by it.

What it means is that, if this ever is used, and if it affects the income of a Presidential Election, then we'll have a situation making Bush v. Gore look like tiddlywinks, where the entire nation is on edge for months waiting for the Supreme Court to elect the next President.

and that's yet another reason why who controls the Supreme Court now determines who will control this country.

327 That I don't get. Is this hidden in some corner of the Constitution that I missed?

It hinges on a very isolated reading of the Constitution that depends on an understanding that States have the absolute unquestioned power to determine how electors are allocated.

Thing is, Courts have ruled in the past that, among other things, you cannot take one part of the Constitution and ignore the rest of it. So in this case, we have an Equal Protection guarantee and something done cannot ignore that. In fact, Courts have ruled in the past that the Federal Government does indeed have a substantial interest in the electoral college mechanism and can step in when necessary.

Frankly, doing away with the Electoral College is fantasy on a number of levels, however it does hinge on a judiciary that has no problem in swatting down frivolous arguments. That it's getting the play it's getting does concern me though.

That I don't get. Is this hidden in some corner of the Constitution that I missed?

Or, are they claiming that it is a defacto amendment when passed by a sufficient number of state legislators?

In the constitution, there's no dictated method for how states award
their electoral votes. South Carolina awarded them solely by votes in
the legislature through the Civil War.

Republicans like Scalise and Paul get shot up, assaulted, run off the road, harassed and driven away in public, mailed horse poo, threatened on their own property like Tucker, slandered by the media, etc.

Democrats merely *claim* to get threatened. It would be really nice if there were any actual evidence that they were suffering the same sort of intimidation as Republicans. If nothing else, it might cause them to check their behavior.

The Dallas Morning News has reported that there were at least 5 American Airlines pilots calling for the new 737's to be grounded before the last crash, for these exact same reasons, and that Boeing, and the FAA, and their own management dismissed their warnings as unverified. (or something)

It reminds me of the Challenger Space Shuttle crash, where the team that built the boosters was screaming "don't launch! don't launch!" and Nasa said "aw what are you scared of, ya big babies."
