I just had the coolant exchanged in my car, and the shop was sloppy with it. It spent my commute in to work this morning steaming at every stoplight. It was steaming and I was steamed

Speaking of alliterative transportation, I saw a trailer from Alaska being towed by a big truck that was a dogsled hearse, which probably makes sense for Alaskan bush country. The operation was owned by a mortician and the trailer was emblazoned with his name and tagline. The tagline was "The Mushin' Mortician"

Interesting is its own kind of good. This isn't the kind of painting you'd hang in the kitchen to cheer you up.

I think there are two more human figures next to the factory wall. The factory must be four stories tall and there are only tiny windows on the top floor. You can imagine how oppressive it feels inside.

I'm surprised that someone upthread said that this guy was Mussolini's bitch. This does not glorify anything.

In defense of the New Deal Art, the Soviet Socialists were just parallel to the Regionalist movement, from the US, as exemplified by Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry, who were quite patriotic and who celebrated America. (The mural of John Brown is one of my favorites)

I don't know about inanimate - those cues are kind of slow to develop. But the easiest and most obvious one for any city is simple - you either keep the homeless panhandlers off your streets and sidewalks, or you don't. That one signal alone tells you everything you want to know about a place.

I remember one trip many moons ago, down near the Mexican border (before things got so regulated) and me and the boys were pretty loaded, and didn't really know where we were going, and suddenly we looked out and saw a big pig wallowing in a mudhole in the middle of the road, and we said "Shit! We're in Mexico!!!" And we were.

So I guess today we'd say "shit! We're in Seattle!!"

Could be true. Even if it is overblown and a "hit piece," though, there is footage from around Seattle of things that would be unacceptable in Denver even with its leftward lurch. The concentrations they showed of public garbage are pretty breathtaking. Garbage piling up to that degree is an indicator that something has failed - even if it isn't as bad as portrayed. The crime-prosecution stats are pretty harrowing, too, though they didn't publish their methodology. I don't know. I don't live there.

because there are other, better ways to show light/white and shadow/black than ACTUALLY using the black or white pigments, which are dull and chalky

Old Masters never ever used those chalky things, they layered "real" pigments in glazes.

anyway... I think Sargent was one of the first start just squishing black paint out and using it, as he started working more quickly and in an expressionist style. People were critical.

I haven't looked into that manifesto deeply, and don't intend to, but I have seem some indications that it is nothing but a cut and paste troll job put together from things he found on the net. For example, I have serious doubts that he ever actually traveled to France; he may have just cut and pasted some stuff that Brievik wrote.

That is the difference between western capitalists and others. Most capitalists want to be rich, not for you to be poor. Others want to be rich *and* for you to be poor. Of course, the wealth of the non-capitalist is less than the wealth of the capitalist in absolute terms - but it is greater in relative terms, and the relative sense is the important one.

My favorite is probably Blow Out, which may be mid-de Palma.

The Untouchables rubs me wrong. Ness spends the movie bending the law to get Capone, but at the very end, with Prohibition repealed, he talks about how he's going to go get a drink. It's glib, and a weird way to look at the use of government force.

I don't dislike it, but that ending rubs me wrong.

I said this earlier this week.

No one would allow a spouse of a dem to criticize their dem boss, particularly JEF. No one bothered to allow the felt up spouse felt up by Biden to speak. Same for the five widows in Dallas as JEF called their dead husbands racists.

The kids of the Biden brothers had four parents.

One parent is now dead, one is forced out by divorce, leaving them with the widow who cheated with her BiL, and the drug using, gambling, cheating BiL.

Biden happily pronounces his verdict on the sloppy thing, saying that it's wonderful. He didn't stay out of it, didn't say that it was a family matter, that shouldn't be dragged onto the national stage.

No, he made political hay with it. And no one is going to go near the two sets of kids unless they can arrange a canned answer.

313 Joe and Mika will end up in straight jackets in a mental hospital when Trump wins again in a landslide.

It is absolutely Shakespearean that they did so much to help elect him.

I used to love Morning Joe and Trump would call in three or four times a week. They put him on because he's great content. They didn't think he had a chance to win.

And when other campaigns complained that he was getting all the air time, Joe and Mika would say "here's our number, call in", but he was the only one willing to just freestyle.

And then he won. And now their Trump hate is eating them up from the inside and they know they helped him win.

This is root unfairness of it all. The right solution is to keep the wealthy and productive from moving away. They should put a 100% transfer tax on non-essential relocation to prevent the social regressives from withholding their skill and wealth from communities in need. Essential relocation can be determined by a local citizen's committee.

315 You wonder how that marriage works. Didn't they have those discussions before they got serious, like most people do? Kids, politics, etc. And the most important one. Sports.

When my wife and I first started dating, I found out her sisters were big Red Sox Fans. As a Yankee fan, I was pretty worried she might be as well. I mean, I really liked her alot and we were getting serious. It would have been a shame to have to part ways.

Eventually found out she's a Twins fan. Which was a big relief, as I'd already been looking at rings.

I remember hearing an old Russian folk tale that exemplifies this very well. (and sheds some light on the Russians) A Russian farmer is working in his field, when suddenly and Angel appears to him, and says "Vasily, your Father in Heaven has seen how hard you work, and he has decided to reward you! You will be granted anything that you desire, you have only to ask! There is just one condition; whatever I give to you, I will give a double portion to your neighbor."

So Vasily thinks, and thinks, and says: "Make me Blind in one eye."

Every Leftist, at heart, is a 5 year old screaming "Daddy, I hate you!" Everything they do is based on a rejection of Western civilization, and everything it has built. They're just as sure that they can will their utopia into being as the 5 year old is that he needs a new Lego set.

No amount of reason ever works on them, because what drives them are rejection, spite, and an endless appetite.

They should put a 100% transfer tax on non-essential relocation to prevent the social regressives from withholding their skill and wealth from communities in need. Essential relocation can be determined by a local citizen's committee.

I was not being serious. I was channeling my inner leftist. Such a scheme would, of course, never work. I would prefer if normal places would install nearly unassailable prohibitions on their toxic ideas so they can't destroy places they flee to. Posted by: t-bird at March 20, 2019 10:57 AM (dzJ3R)

The Western Leftist is different because he comes from an Individualistic/Guilt/Atonement society. This generates self-haters among the weak and damaged.

The others came from more Tribalist/Shame/Revenge cultures. Guilt is not a big part of their cultures so they don't end up with many self-haters ... if any.

The whole love of democracy thing is off, but Israel is burdened with having been run by the Brits before their independence so they don't know about reasonable systems of governance.
