If it's the link on Insty, it's old news. The problem with the supposed "Catherine Eddowes shawl" is that there's no unimpeachable chain of custody. Its only interest is that it seems to "confirm" that Aaron Kosminski was the Ripper, which has been an accepted theory since (I believe) Paul Begg floated it in his Jack the Ripper: The Uncensored Facts in 1990.

Reality show idea:
1) Print the following excerpt on a big white sandwich board:
The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible.
2) Make Kevin Williamson wear the sandwich board
3) Each week, make him stand outside a working-class bar near a mill, plant or mine somewhere in the US. Opening week could be Buffalo. Then Kenosha. Then Troy (Michigan or NY - pick one). Then Beckley, WV. Etc.
4) Keep the cameras rolling
5) Broadcast the object lesson for the masses.

176 Garden of Eden ... I (just now) have a modern day interpretation.

Adam and Eve lived in the DC Bubble ... Eden. Cocktail Parties every weekend, everyone rich and happy, all needs met.

Then they eat of the Apple of internet alternative news ... and find out the world outside the garden is less than pure. THEN they find out the snake they were talking to ... is the one that collapsed the First Heaven and Earth. Now they know their perfect world ... is a bubble.

The snake is the commie infiltration of our government. The NeverTrump types want to stay in their garden, where they and all around them are pure, not demons. And many "purists" in DC really think they are pure, that Mueller is a god, and Hillary is virtuous.

They live in nakedness, a constant orgy ... most will never become WOKE to their own vile abuse of the citizenry. They like their garden, even though it is now just poisonous fruit.

theory needs a little work, but I think that is why "knowledge of good and evil" could change things for purist Adam/Eve. (actually it is "eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, iirc)

If your artillery isn't ballistic it needs elevation. Mounting a cannon of similar size might be impractical for air support(assuming orbital bombardment is not an option). I think it has its place, peculiar vulnerabilities not withstanding.

178 The whole point of Mueller was not to discover Trump misdeeds but to punish anyone who helped Trump. They all knew there was no there there because they put it there.

The report may come out heavily-redacted with our media betters telling us what it said.

I am not sure the *point* of the Mueller investigation is to punish Trump supporters. I think that is a desirous secondary effect. I think the point of the affair is to provide air cover and distraction from Obama's and Clinton's criminality. I think this will eventually not work out the way they want, but I suspect the whole point was an attempt to sanitize their sins.

Something as large as an AT AT should have been bristling with weapons, not just few cannons from the front. Should have looked like a porcupine spitting fire in all directions imaginable , flares to ward off incoming missiles, rotating canons, a land mine ejector in the ass of the AT AT so it looked like it was pooping explosives, and a big red button on the dash board so that all the weapons fire at once in a giant fury of heat, metal and energy..... and then when RBG shows up and One Punches it, all the girls on Holdo's star cruiser will fist bump and yellow gggggiiiiiRRRRLLLL POWER, and throw their hands in the air like a great big "Whoooah Bundy" from Married with Children. Whichever--just make sure you are buying it from an authorized dealer and not from a big box store.

Friend of mine who owned a JD dealership was going crazy with people bringing equipment they had bought from Home Depot (or Lowes ?) to his store for warranty work. He stopped taking it because the stuff that was sold there was NOT the same quality as that which you get at a dealership. Lots of plastic parts, etc. used in order to bring the price down to big box levels.

Looking back, I think it was Uncle Walter Cronkite's reporting on the Tet offensive. And even then I thought that was a momentary lapse and we'd be back to straight news shortly. Uncle Walter wouldn't lie to us.

349 Last night I was on the ONT and started up a convo about the NZ Shooter's "Manifesto". To some degree, my thoughts have more solidified over night.

It's basically like Mein Kampf.

If you don't read it, the manipulators will lie about what it says. They will ignore major parts--very few ever speak of page after page of nihilism in Hitler's book, for example--and pull quotes where they want to, and the point of that is to prompt an emotional, rejection reaction in you.

At this point your taboo mind will take over and you'll want to shun and shame anyone who is "like" that.

There's this think in the Comptutation field of Mathematics called called "Relative Computability". It's actually both useful and highly ironic. But the theory is that there is no general algorithm that can compute whether or not a given machine will halt on a given input. However, IF one existed.... certain things are "relatively computable" from that.

So when I say that Hitler's ideas are built rather logically from a different point of view. We're talking about a view that I can't get to, but once it is defined, I can understand. And also when I say that "Hitler is an intellectual" you'll understand that what I mean not that he "knows what he's talking about", but that a lot of what he says is "relatively computable" from the basis of his beliefs, his inputs.

While the NZ Shooter's "manifesto" is in no way as disciplined as Hitler's two-volume manifesto--or Kazinsky's manifesto, there is a certain reality as he describes his empirical move from self-confessed "communist" to self-described "libertarian" (but "fascist"?). And the things he saw that were "worse" than he heard (and dismissed).

People can have all sorts of divergent reactions when they have discovered that the authorities have lied to them. And that's the point. You can't control that type of reversal. You can't pick what people will drop and take up. They no longer trust the shell of "authority", so they no longer trust that, for example the European Muslim situation is "not as bad as racists say".

So, what I'm saying is to gloss over where the "manifesto" organizes sense in a different way that we would put it together is to give this lesser document more power, by the possibility of it being somebody's red-pill document.

Also, the manipulators will lie about what's in it--as they have already done, over and over again. I've read it. Is he a conservative? Like he says, kinda--he adopts the trope of the conservative populist movement "Conservatism hasn't conserved anything" (mostly true) . Is he a liberal? Kinda, but more a radical.

But what can you expect when your starting point is self-described communism. The chief value in Marxism is "dignity". However Marx, a materialist , fails to base "dignity" in a materialistic context. IT is my observation that such root cognitive dissonance ends up with chaos in the mind. That chaos causes a cycle of emotional reactions and often a re-doubling of revolutionary fervor.

Regardless as a Marxist you start with the Value of revolution and uprooting your traditions, and engineering new ones. No wonder the writer doesn't think "democracy" holds much promise--the point is not to appeal to distributed wisdom--but to enact "solutions". I would wager that the shooter is first a revolutionary (by Marx), and his target has changed over the years. But his unexamined base is the Revolution for the Dignity of Man in Nature. I find this also true of Mussolini, Gentile, and Hitler. Mussolini resigned from the Socialist party of Italy as a "sworn Marxist", and created "National Socialism", the pattern of every Socialist nation since.

In fact, I reflect that the Fascists and the Nazis seem to be the pattern of less apocalyptic, less genocidal European Socialism of the 20th century. And what we see in Europe today is the thawing of the fascist, collectivist core, where you can go to jail if you call a XY-person "he".

350 "man poisons religion"

or put another way, "religion" is what institutions make of individual faith. Directly parallel to what government does to liberty. Grouping is useful, probably necessary. But the individual relationship to God should remain preeminent. Not an easy thing.

As soon as people define themselves as one religion (Catholic, Lutheran, etc.) they have tied themselves to a religion. "Catholic" might mean universal, but it is certainly its own religion, with dictates passed down from a man. Free thinkers can walk away from commie pope.

People often point to that as a selling out point, but I don't buy that. And yes, Uncle Walter reported from London during the Blitz, he knew what real war is.

So what follows is the exact text of his comments after visiting VietNam in the wake of Tet. I don't find them at all unreasonable.

Tonight, back in more familiar surroundings in New York, we'd like to sum up our findings in Vietnam, an analysis that must be speculative, personal, subjective. Who won and who lost in the great Tet Offensive against the cities? I'm not sure. The Vietcong did not win by a knockout but neither did we.

We've been too often disappointed by the optimism of the American leaders...

Both in Vietnam and Washington to have faith any longer in the silver linings they find in the darkest clouds. For it seems now more certain than ever, that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in a stalemate. To say that we are closer to victory today is to believe in the face of the evidence, the optimists who have been wrong in the past.

To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, if unsatisfactory conclusion. On the off chance that military and political analysts are right, in the next few months we must test the enemy's intentions, in case this is indeed his last big gasp before negotiations.

But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.

This is Walter Cronkite. Good night.

Well, I'm not going to get a personal briefing from the Joint Chiefs.

Back in the day, for all of their faults, the networks and the major newspapers had foreign bureaus. They had guys who weren't on air every night whose job it was to understand the place where they were and pop up and report on it if anything big happened.

That's gone. We have cable channels who've found that it's much cheaper and easier programming to have people with differing opinions yell at each other about what's going on.

Cronkite at Tet was an anchor but with a reporting background. I don't know that we have real reporters anymore.

387 Who won and who lost in the great Tet Offensive against the cities? I'm not sure. The Vietcong did not win by a knockout but neither did we.

This is stupid and dishonest on several levels. Not all battles are meant to be, or can be, knock out battles.
Tet was an offensive by the North. They successfully mounted it, and then failed, with heavy casualties. Cronkite lied by implying that there was equivalence here.

This is dependent entirely upon what claims were made, and how victory can be measured.

To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, if unsatisfactory conclusion. On the off chance that military and political analysts are right, in the next few months we must test the enemy's intentions, in case this is indeed his last big gasp before negotiations.

He's declaring defeat, and then hedging at the last. I wouldn't wipe my ass with this.

But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.

Again with writing off all prospects.

It's the problem of Values. What value should be chief and foremost--and even the weighing of that requires values. Values are a recursion problem.

If you buy Darwinism, the basis of all values are the value of drawing another breath, unbleeding. So survival is a chief value overall. Now, how do people define survival?

And when immediate survival is put at a distance then the Darwinian stand-in seems to be what has become known as "thrival". Thrival is what causes a man to want to impregnate as many females as he can, so that his "genes" carry on. It is this Darwinian view that has made marriage quaint and "illogical"--while we have also adopted the value of hating "toxic men" who want to plant their seed everywhere.

There is this idea that simply planting your seed shouldn't be seen as "thrival", and that nurturing your offspring to success is true "thrival". But that's the thing about Natural Selection: you go your way, I'll go mine, and we'll see which strategy survives or thrives best. Death proves all.

"Thrival" is an idea in our mind. A personal preference--we would all choose to ascend the ladder of societal status and have an easier life. However, it never replaces survival in the weighing of Nature, survival remains the basis of a Darwinian context.

The Darwinian values of Death and Survival, the ultimate binary, blunt instrument can never be dispelled from the modern understanding of nature.

A libertarian who makes the "marketplace" of preference the chief value of the system has 1) no basis to do so against other preferences, and 2) no less bootstrapped a central value for the cohesion of the society.

If you ignore the problem of uniting central common values, you will fail every time. And that must resist the market value and preference of those core values. Kipling called them the "Gods of the Marketplace".

We're willowed, so this isn't the time for it, but we should have a Viet Nam thread.

"Writing off all prospects" of winning. What would winning have looked like? People are like we should have kept bombing we should have done that. What was to win?

The more I look at it the more I think it was a stupid pointless war that killed 58,000 too many Americans and ruined many more.

Europe had it's re-unification wars. All of a sudden, because separate European colonies were involved it was deathly important to counteract unification wars.

as I said, groups are probably necessary, but keep individual liberty preeminent. The next generation should learn from their parents, first and foremost. The group should never declare supremacy over the individual will/choice.

Government clearly has a role, to make sure those liberties are protected. Religions can also provide protections from "predators" and wolves. And the bigger the predator (fascism, Islamists, DeepState) .... the more individual must group together in defense (of the realm of liberty).

not an easy thang. America had smart founders ... infiltration happened along the path toward even more liberty.

398 It's a rainy day and I am playing funeral songs on the guitar.

Golden Embers, by Mandolin Orange. Its bridge, done by them with double bass and plucked violin, is pretty cool.

Loose, by Ray Wylie Hubbard. Simple three chord song with some electric guitar solos I can't do.

And my favorite, No Hard Feelings, by the Avett Brothers. And walk through the night, straight to the light.
