Surprise! Chief Justice Roberts Is an Increasingly Reliable Member of the Court's Liberal Bloc

But Roberts.

Chief Justice John Roberts has made common cause with the Supreme Court’s liberal bloc as late, breaking with his conservative colleagues on cases relating to abortion, the death penalty and President Donald Trump’s revised rules for asylum seekers.

Whether Roberts's recent maneuvers reflect a substantive change in his approach to cases remains to be seen. In isolation, it's difficult to know what to make of the chief's votes.

So obviously we should have elected Hillary Clinton, as some Moral Paragons Who Are Also Unrivaled Geniuses argued so eloquently on Twitter.

To be honest, I never trusted him since before the nomination the only thing that seemed to recommend him is that he was a careerist - Everyone in DC liked him and thought highly of him.

We need justices who aren't afraid to piss people off. In fact, we need presidents, leaders, and pundits that are not afraid to piss people off.

In the real world, in business, you piss people off all the time. Usually people who want to harm you, or who are idiots, or who are in the way. "This is not a game of cricket!" (Colonel Saito)

66 Shocking. WE see a Supreme Court; Mr. Roberts sees a High School Student Council. And he sees his role, in a tip of the hat to a world renowned Canadian poet and percussionist as a simple one: "conform or be cast out".

Mr. Roberts values how he is seen by the cool kids in DC (Leftists all of course) above all else. If that means he overturns the entire bloody Constitution and helps along the United States turning into a lawless police state: so be it.

Somebody else broke the italics this time. I'm seeing if it stops. I don't understand why it happens only sometimes, not always, though.

Both Germany and Japan were really convinced they'd win. By the Bushes' day, nobody thought they could beat us. And of course both countries had long traditions of obedience to the law; longer and stronger than we Anglos ever did.

I voted each of the above named GOP bums, once each. By 92 and 04, I was fed up with the Bushes. In 92 I voted Libertarian, in 04 I didn't bother to vote.

211 The Marshall Plan crapola worked with Japan and Germany because Japan and Germany were basically civilized countries to begin with.

That was why West Germany could fix East Germany in the 90s, but nobody could fix the ex-USSR. East Germany had once been part of a normal country and it still had things to fall back on.

Stalin had engineered interdependence in the Soviet Union so that the various republics and regions had to rely on each other. Belarus was the assembly workbench, Ukraine was the breadbasket, somewhere did the heavy industry.

When that fell apart there was nothing to fall back on because none of those places had been regular countries in the first place.

212 The Marshall Plan crapola worked with Japan and Germany because Japan and Germany were basically civilized countries to begin with.

Japan pre-WW2 and Iraq were pretty equivalent, but Japan was utterly and totally terrified and humiliated, destroyed almost to the roots. Plus Americans were more willing to stick it out for the long haul, and the opposition party at the time was not utterly treasonous trying to regain power.

Other stuff, like Heller or Obamacare, he'd vote right.

Revenant, Chief Justice Burger used to try to pull that trick. The other members of the court, liberal and conservative, were pretty much united in hating his guts for crap like that. As the Obamacare decision shows, the final vote is when the opinion is published.

So in typical corporation tradition the uppers thought "Gee this guy makes too much money." (commissions) and set out to get him fired. First I never understood that thinking because if a salesman is making a lot of money he is selling a lot of equipment and making the company a lot of money.

Anyway, corporate sends out a straight laced guy and asshole to "Get Ben" and get him fired. Well first night in LA Ben takes the corporate guy out gets him drunk, goes to strip club and Ben and his partner take all kinds of incriminating pictures with corporate guy. Next morning Ben shows corporate guy the pictures. Ben never had any problems from corporate again. Oh and he still sold shit loads of equipment.

296 Is there no way to get him off the Court?

Only 4 ways to get him off the court:
1. Retirement
2. Death
3. Utter collapse of the government/SMOD
4. Impeachment for "conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."

No supreme court justice has ever been removed from office.

298 274, Dontcha know that Orangeman Bad caused the fall of the Roman Empire, Caesar's assassination, Alexander the Great's broken heart, the Saxons to lose at Hastings in 1066, and the Hundred Years War. He capped it off by causing Napoleon's rise and WWI and II. This is not opinion, this is historical fact.

302 They are currently in a built-in hold, and I'm not sure of the exact launch time.

I was just there. I wouldn't call the hold built-in. There's something going on with helium pressure in a science thingie and there's no set liftoff time until they figure it out.

317 296, No, but some have resigned such as Abe Fortas from doing dubious things such as an undisclosed stipend on salary from a dude that had cases before the court. Fortas might have been impeached and certainly was not going to become Chief Justice in 1968 after that was revealed.

William Douglas resigned because his fellow justices were sick of him and his drunken anti social antics and they told him that they would support his removal via impeachment if necessary. Also believe that dislike by colleagues led Warren Burger to step down to head the Constitutional Bicentennial Commission. Goldberg resigned to become Delegate the UN because LBJ wanted him out and crony Abe Fortas in. Would not be surprised that LBJ played dirty to get what he wanted.

Most of the Four Horsemen on the Court resigned more or less after the switch in time that saved nine after FDR's court packing scheme during 1937.

The hold at T-4 is built-in to the countdown and nominally lasts for about 10 minutes. It can be extended as circumstances demand.
