Victor Davis Hanson Responds to The Bulwark's Attack on Him
A Day After Charlie Sykes' Attack Site Smears His Colleague Hanson as a Nazi, The Very Virtuous David French Appears on Sykes' Podcast

Not taking prisoners here.

A jagoff, supposedly an adviser to Mittens Romney when he was pretending to be Severely Conservative, performed the usual services for Pierre Omidyar and attacked Victor Davis Hanson for his book The Case for Trump. In doing so, he also served The Bulwark's primary mission, as explained by Charlie Sykes: to "taint" any Trump supporting intellectuals and leave them with a "stench," and "make people feel uncomfortable at dinner parties and in green rooms."

So bitchy, so small. This crew is filled with such ambition that they can think of nothing but reputation-smearing operations and Twitter OWNZ.

Hanson responds:

Schoenfeld only fuels the popular perception of The Bulwark Never Trumpers as an angry, coastal elite who are anguished that their warnings about Trump were ignored by both hoi polloi and their conservative "grifters and trolls.” In careerist fury, he now damns others for his own self-immolation -- as if the country must suffer for the sins of not listening to his own genius, which would probably have given the country a 16-year Obama-Clinton regnum.

That Never Trumpers at The Bulwark were wrong about the Trump nomination, the general election, and the first two years of the Trump administration seems only to have fueled their spitefulness. If Schoenfeld is representative of this rump movement, then they are engaging in projection.

How strange to suggest that writing a book about why Trump got elected and why he has done well is proof of one's careerist effort to gain favor with a politician or perhaps find employment in his administration. This is a charge against those who have never worked in a campaign or sought administration employment, leveled by those who most certainly have done one or both in the past and no doubt will in the future -- at least if they can pull off yet another careerist contortion in 2024.

The bitter hostility of Schoenfeld reflects the Trump-assassination theme pushed by celebrities. Just as Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and Johnny Depp vie to see who can most grotesquely envision Trump’s death, so too Never Trumpers seek ever-more-creative ways to gnash their teeth at Trump and his supporters. Instead of trying to smear those with whom they disagree, they might have at least offered a coherent defense of their own creed, such as it is.

Instead of shrill charges and exclamations, Schoenfeld might have explained why Trump got elected, and why the preferred candidates of The Bulwark did not. And why have Republicans not won 51 percent of the presidential vote since 1988, in an era when they’ve done well at the state and local level? And, most important, why exactly do Schoenfeld and his associates oppose a president who has enacted a conservative menu that was once mostly their own? Why do they attack a president who is trying to stop a neosocialist agenda that was once likewise anathema to them?

Were some always closet progressives, and have they now found Trump hatred a convenient entree into the progressive world?

Let me stop you right there, Vic: The answer is "Yes."

Or is it that Trump's agendas must be stopped because his handprints on them soil what they once favored?

No it was that thing you said before.

...

"Little rocket man" may or may not be a puerile presidential outburst, but not achieving annualized 3 percent GDP growth for a decade, or leaving the border wide open, or writing off the industrial heartland, or doing little to address minority unemployment -- or for 20 years soberly and judiciously giving billions to the Kim dynasty as it sought its present arsenal of nuclear-tipped missiles pointed at the West Coast -- may be a far greater moral sin.

If America had listened in 2016 to such Never Trump advocacy, we would now be in the eleventh year of a likely 16-year Obama-Clinton continuum, a tenure well on the way to completing the much-vaunted fundamental progressive transformation of the country -- to the detriment of millions of Americans. Donald Trump for the time being has interrupted that arc of history....

Schoenfeld was once a professed conservative who now conveniently adopts positions he once refuted, and he does so while in pay to a billionaire leftist who in large part underwrites The Bulwark’s invective to damage conservatives.

Since the malleable Schoenfeld is fond of historical allusion, so be it. There was once a proper Cold War term for what he has sadly turned into -- a useful idiot, whose loud but transient and minimal utility to the Left will abruptly cease when Donald Trump leaves office.

And then what?

The mention of "historical allusion" refers to Schoenfeld repeatedly comparing Hanson to Nazi propagandists, and then claiming -- in cowardly, womanly passive-aggression -- that he doesn't mean to say Hanson is a Nazi, just that he, like these Nazi propagandists, is using his education to argue in the service of evil.

That's all.

It's just a coincidence he keeps coming up with comparisons to Nazis, he assures us.

Meanwhile: Guess how David French stands up for his colleague Victor Davis Hanson?

By doing a podcast with Charlie "3-Wives" Sykes, who commissioned the hit-piece on Hanson.

And yes, while Hanson's response was published today, Shoenenfeld's hit piece has been up for at least one day and I think two.

A friend says: "Victor Davis Hanson must quit NR over this."

That, or make it clear that either French goes, or he goes.

Or maybe he should just tell Lowry: Professional courtesy is out the window, now; David French is a valid target for me. And if you don't like it -- fire me, and explain to the donors why French gets special privileges and I get a pink-slip.

Yes, I like that best. Put the coward Lowry into a position where he has to make a decision.

What venomous, sneaky little shits. All parading (waddling, really) around to show off their imagined "virtue."

David French shows as much loyalty to colleagues as Charlie Sykes does to wives.

Update: Alex the Chick points out this isn't the first time Lowry has embraced someone attacking VDH:

This is the second time that fellow "colleagues" at NRO have taken shots at VDH.

Kevin Williamson was, now, is everyone sitting down for this shocking turn of events, an utter, petty, nasty, horrid, small, pathethic twatling about VDH when he was hired by The Atlantic.

NRO took him back when The Atlantic gave him the boot. What was left of my respect for Lowry was destroyed at that point because you don't bring back someone who bad mouthed a co-worker they way Williamson did. You just don't.

Kevin Williamson did in fact go face-down, ass-up for his paymasters (brief though they were) at The Atlantic in attacking Hanson.

VDH responded here, vigorously.

I hope VDH takes that same attitude with regard to the cuck French.

Meanwhile:

Jordan Schaechtel:

While the media has extensively covered this information, little coverage has been devoted to the individuals in charge of the super PAC at the time that it accepted the cash from the China-backed outfit...

Mike Murphy is a high-profile NeverTrumper and a valued member of the Republican consultant class who was best known for working on the failed John McCain presidential campaign...

Murphy, like his close friend Bill Kristol, pretty clearly cottons to the Trump-Russia conspiracy theories.

Moreover, the GOP consultant, who is also a NBC contributor, frequently appears on television to advance the Trump-Russia conspiracy.

It is all too ironic that Murphy, who forwards the idea that the president is tied to a foreign government, oversaw an organization that was subject to a potential Chinese influence operation.

Pilot: "Still dives on its own. Hey, none of those sensors agree with each other."
Maint: "Yeah, that happens. Just ignore them and fly the plane manually."

Pilot: "OK I tried that and the plane still noses down on its own."
Boeing: "Wow you guys are sh!tty pilots. That's why we put the MCAS in there."
Pilot: "What's MCAS?"
Maint: "What's MCAS?"
Boeing: "That's the computer thing that keeps nosing you down. Without that, this unbalanced plane could not fly. We didn't tell you about it because it would just confuse you stupid airmen."

83 And why bother? This is a good strategy, and that is surprising since we're talking about the GOP. Forget the popular and campaign carefully and intensely to win where it counts on the electoral vote.

I don't give two shits about the popular vote, and no one should. The only reason anyone ever brings it up it is because they're butt-hurt that the system as designed can thwart their vision of a nation held as slaves to their bicoastal betters.

-----

because, I'd think, we're starting to lose all the local races and all the House seats in California too.

Also, it's a sign that the GOP just gives up. The DNC (even though we laugh at hillary and wisconsin) runs up the score everywhere...look at this Beto Cruz BS in texas.

Giving up disheartens the base, tells the moderates the GOP is only for suckers in the south and midwest and that no proper person would believe in this stuff.

That, or make it clear that either French goes, or he goes.

Or maybe he should just tell Lowry: Professional courtesy is out the window, now; David French is a valid target for me. And if you don't like it -- fire me, and explain to the donors why French gets special privileges and I get a pink-slip.

Now French. Unless French went on there and was vigorous in his condemnation of calling VDH a Nazi, and that is what happened, then there is no excuse for this.

All of that is, of course, tainted by my loathing of French and Williamson so lick that pillar of salt when evaluating my statements.

Also, and I'll try to be nice here, VDH is, hmm, how to put this, in the latter part of his career. There. That was polite. Why would he be sucking up for a job when he doesn't need or want one? I do think it is telling that the oxygen thief accusing him of doing so leapt immediately to that assumption.

Further also, no wonder the RINOs assumed Trump was on the take from Russia. They were and/or would have been.

125 The original piece in the Bulwark, also via Outline:
https://outline.com/dDMdHj

The title of this one is Sophistry in the Service of Evil. Here's an excerpt that is typical of the original. Longish quote, but I'll tie it together:
Consider Hanson's treatment of Trump and matters of race. Throughout Trump's career, blatant racial prejudice has been a continuous thread, beginning with the discriminatory housing policies practiced by the Trump Organization back in the 1970s and extending into his presidency with, among other things, his observation that there were "very fine people" among the white supremacists violently demonstrating at Charlottesville and his almost obsessive references to the supposedly low IQs of various black politicians and athletes. Trump was also the leading proponent of birtherism, the campaign to prove that America's first black president was disqualified from holding his office.

Do these people not own mirrors? They have the gall to call VDH sophomoric in the title of that tripe? Calling out dumb-ass politicians as dumb asses is racist if they happen to be black? Things from forty years ago in a giant organization that may or may not have happened is relevant to policies today? Questioning Obama's questionable origin was a backlash against Obama's blackness and not his dirty pool and disastrous platform? Jumping on the worn-out Charlottesville bandwagon?

And these people - these fetid mental midgets furiously trying to protect their maggot-ridden rice bowls - accuse *Hanson* of sophistry?

150 Did any of you guys catch French's holier than thou appearance on Andrew Klavan's podcast? It was really sad. He's really lost all perspective. His overarching concern is the "conservative movement", but he refuses to appreciate the fact that Trump has been one of the most conservative presidents and is actually promoting what we want, basically because Trump is a jerk and not a role model.

It's like he does not see what the left is doing every single day. I used to respect him, but it seems like the Trump presidency really broke a lot of people's placeminds, which makes me question how sound their minds were in the first place

Klavan was gracious and allowed him to talk and asked good questions but he addressed French's wrong-headed claims the next podcast.

153 I watched VDH deliver a brilliant speech regarding why NTs attack Trump over the weekend. In a nutshell, since 1946 there has been a belief that the US needs to be involved in everything happening in the world, and the US needs to pay for it. Trump comes in and says, "if it does not help Americans, we don't need to do it." and the neo-cons hate that.

155 Trump comes in and says, "if it does not help Americans, we don't need to do it." and the neo-cons hate that.

I think that's the essential truth of it. They were never conservative at any level, they just believed the USA to be morally superior and a source of greatness that must be spread around the world. They were pro military not out of respect for fighting men but as a tool to "export democracy." Their foreign policy is stuck in the 1970s where we fix things by sending troops or money to buy people into a certain point of view.

Trump renegotiating trade deals is evil to them because those trade deals were structured around trying to manipulate behavior and activity in the nations in question rather than what is best for America.

Where do these people come from that pursue the perfect in the opposition to the good?

Trump has been far from perfect. He should have shot Comey through the forehead in the Rose Garden on his first day in office, okay metaphorically, but he let the FBI get away. He doesn't have a wall, we're not bulldozing crowds of Central Americans back across the border. And his tone on Twitter isn't exactly Presidential at times, though it does cut through the bullshit.

But look, we've got this Nooyawk bimbo slagging off Reagan, who was the last President who could reasonably be compared to Trump, and Reagan was far from perfect both as a man and as a President.

He knew One Big Thing and as such he knew what he wanted to do and he broke the USSR but he let the PLO get away with murder (literally). He routinely capitulated on domestic policy giving in to the UAW and letting the Democrats walk away with their amnesty.

Nothing that Socialist Slag had to say about Reagan even approached fact, everything she bitched about we acclaim.

228 I think that's the essential truth of it.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 12, 2019 03:48 PM (39g3+)

Not quite. They are conservative, but they're essentially second generation conservatives. The first generation were Reagan, H.W. Bush, Buckley, Irving Kristol, etc.: men who came onto the political scene between 1945 and 1980. These men built up the conservative movement, both in terms of ideology and infrastructure. They built it in the shadow of WWII and the early Cold War. Hence, the importance of global alliances against existential threats, along with globalized economies to encourage other nations to side with us, and to try and maximize the ability of the free world to outproduce the communists.

Guys like W., Goldberg, Bill Kristol, and Ben Shapiro became involved in politics after 1980, and so came up in a conservative movement that was on the upswing. Thus, while I think that they believed in conservatism, they were always at some level parroting back what others already thought. They didn't have to build up the intellectual capital that the earlier generation did. It's the difference between writing God and Man at Yale and starting National Review, and running a branch of the Campus Republicans and getting a job at National Review.

The problem is that the world changed in the early Nineties, with the fall of the USSR. But conservatism didn't. Second Gen conservatives didn't reevaluate their ideas or their proposed solutions in light of a changing world, but instead doubled down.

The Third Gen consists of a lot of the alt-right: people who are questioning basic assumptions about the world that the Second Gen never did. The third gen folks came of age, politically, in the latter half of the Bush years, and the Obama administration. They're experiences are long-running conflicts, outsourcing, social upheaval, and a progressive movement that seemed to be ascendant.

Well this is the problem with a lot of movements. They're built on the shoulders of people standing on the shoulders of giants. 284 instead of saying "trump's been far from perfect blah blah blah," start off aggro by saying "trump's been the best president since Reagan"

285 Fat, flabby, effeminate, timorous and flaccid is no way to go the through life, Bulwark.

286 Oh, yeah, between TuCa telling the left to go p!ss up a rope and VDH's response to the ankle-biters of the Never Trump cabal, , the corner has been turned.

Actually the only correct answer is, 'The Supreme Court has ruled that I should offer the position to the most qualified applicant. Just as I do not share the details of my sexuality to others, I have no wish to inquire of an applicants sexuality. At the time the Supreme Court rules that I must be intrusive in this matter, then I will comply. Until then, fvck off Senator Booker, you closet fag.'

Perhaps I might temper the last sentence a bit.

288 I just can't believe you've gotten both barrels from Vic Hanson unless there is a lengthy passage in Attic Greek. And it should be about viniculture, too.

290 Victor Davis Hanson was the only reason to even look online at that garbage website. He's great. NRO is now officially dead to me. Forever.

291 VDH is a modern day Cicero. May the Good Lord protect him and deliver him from Cicero's fate.

292 You're writing about VDH like he's employed by National Review, and perhaps he is, but I think all they do is pay his syndicator for the privilege of publishing his columns. Plenty of other places to read VDH.

293 Honestly , now, Ace, you cannot reasonably expect our accomplished and worldy NeverTrumpers to allow some dungfooted dirt farmer to tramp his cowpatties all over their polished and hallowed halls...

294 Hey Ace, now is the time to ask VDH to be a coblogger. He might appreciate the unlimited Val-u-Rite and Hobo sports.

295 Laughing because I am imagining both Buckley and Vidal going apeshi* over the lack of intellect currently displayed by the Rockefeller Republican crowd and the Screaming Socialist groups.

Both Buckley and Vidal were excellent writers and debaters with the intellectual and social backgrounds to make it fun and instructive.

Sadly, no more fun.

296 VDH is the only one worth reading at NRO. If he left, they would be the Weekly Standard in about a week.

297 "What venomous, sneaky little shits. All parading (waddling, really) around to show off their imagined "virtue."
Yes, I noticed that too, they ALL seem to anywhere from plump to fat.

298 Does greasy Bill Kristol still do those commercials for FLEX TAPE.

He's quite handsome.
