FBI Brings RICO Charges Against "Massive" College-Admissions Rigging Conspiracy;
Actresses Lori Laughlin and Felicity Huffman Charged With Paying to Get Their Kids Cheated Into Schools

To be honest, my faith in the "Incorruptible Straight-Arrows of the FBI" is near-zero, and I don't know if I could sit on any jury involving a case the FBI developed.

But this is what the Incorruptible Straight-Arrows are claiming, and I'm sure there's no overcharging, trumping-up, or publicity-seeking going on here.

Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among 50 people charged in a $25 million college entrance exam cheating scheme, according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The alleged scam focused on getting students admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities, and helping potential students cheat on their college exams, according to the indictment unsealed in Boston.

Authorities said the FBI investigation, code-named Operation Varsity Blues, uncovered a network of wealthy parents who paid thousands of dollars to a California man who boosted their childrens' chances of gaining entrance into elite colleges, such as Yale and Stanford, by paying people to take tests for their children, bribing test administrators to allow it to happen, and bribing college coaches and administrators to identify the applicants as athletes.

"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth, combined with fraud," said U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling.

"There can be no separate college admission for wealthy, and I will add there will not be a separate criminal justice system either."

...

Loughlin allegedly told the cooperating witness that she would arrange for her daughter to be photographed on a rowing machine to bolster the false claim on the application to USC that her daughter was the crew coxswain for the L.A. Marine Club team, according to court papers.

...

Loughlin, who is currently out of the country, is not yet in custody but is expected to surrender, according to a U.S. law enforcement official familiar with the matter. Elizabeth Much, a representative for Loughlin, told NBC News she had no comment.

Huffman is accused of paying $15,000 for getting one of her daughters unlimited time for her SAT test. The actress also explored a plan to boost the test scores of a second daughter, according to court papers.

She and her husband (who is for some reason not charged) decided against hiring a "ringer" to take the test in the guise of their daughter, but not due to any ethical qualms, just due to the practical problem of explaining how a low-scoring student suddenly gets a high score just two months later.

23 This isn't a nothingburger by any means. College admissions are corrupt. I think the bigger part of this than bribery with the college officials is bribery within the testing system. The testing system has a reputation for cleanliness, whereas college admissions haven't had that reputation for some time.

Ah, she eschewed the "Ted Kennedy dipsy doodle."

Further proof, if any were needed, the Kennedy was a retard. While the final exam (in Spanish, IIRC) was in progress, the nitwit went walking around Harvard Square and ran into the course's professor, who recognized him. He was too stupid to realize that maybe he should keep a low profile for three hours.

So there is an institutional route -- you donate 10 million they name a building after you and all your kids get free tuition.

This was touted as the side door. You pay 100K we put you on the list as an athlete and if you need help on the test that'll cost an extra 15,000. You have to fake a reason to take the test at our special location - traveling to a wedding in the area on that date seems to work nicely.

81 Thing is, the kids know who gets into what school and how they got there, so the parents were buying something else besides prestige in the neighborhood. No kid with mediocre grades is getting into Georgetown or Yale without a spectacular SAT and serious extracurriculars. And the kids all know about that stuff.

And no, I don't think you can fall back on, "Well, she's Bill Macy's daughter so they admitted her." It's lots harder than that, plus you have to have a chance to succeed. Schools hate kids who flunk out so they don't admit them in the first place.

A solution, but not the right one. The right answer to the colleges problem is to eliminate any federal financial aid grants and eliminate student loans from bankruptcy immunity. Reintroduce the possibility of default and discharge and watch interest rates for student loans hit 20% where they belong. And you'll also see lenders suddenly interested in what you're studying and what your GPA is, because now the quality of the bet matters.

And you'll also see lenders suddenly interested in what you're studying and what your GPA is, because now the quality of the bet matters.

This would be bad - really bad - for about two years. Then watch the price of higher education collapse.

Depends on the question being asked.

If you're asking "How can we make the student loan market rational again?" then your way is the obvious one.

If you're asking "How can I threaten, cajole, and intimidate my well-heeled enemies in the education sector?" then Trump's is better.

You could try to make the case that the university benefits from having the captain of the HS football team or the girl who spent her summers digging wells in Africa because those people tend to be the ones who rise to positions of leadership and influence in society, and thus are likely to be major donors or to increase enrollment in the school.

But it's mostly about the Jews and Asians.

I could write pages on what went down with different universities. But the worst, the very worst, was Case Western reserve. They make money by trolling for application fees from students they have no intention of ever admitting.

They send dozens of letters, begging you to apply, promising you scholarships. But it is all just to get the $150 application fee.

They simply cannot shake off their sordid past as being part of Connecticut and that carries over into their current behavior.

271 I'm pretty amazed at the number of people on here who think this is a waste of time of the FBI's time.

First, it wasn't the FBI that uncovered this, according to the lead US atty. this was uncovered when another case the DOJ was working on was talking with a person of interest, who gave them a tip that this was going on.

The DOJ, the IRS, and the FBI spent a year working this case, including wiretapping, etc. They are still investigating, this is the first charges they are making public as the perp in this case has decided to plead guilty in a plea deal with the DOJ this afternoon.

There are 50 people who are named in the charging statement, and many are very wealthy CEO's, etc. Some parents gave $1.5 M to William Singer to arrange to defraud the colleges entrance requirements and get their kids into choice school. The average was $200,000 to $400,000. Singer has been a college entrance coach and owned a company created for such. He also created a fake 501c3 charity to put some of the money into , which these same parents then would donate and receive a tax deduction while the money was laundered back to the college coaches, test takers, etc.

A USC administrator has been arrested for being involved in taking bribes. The Stanford sailing coach has been arrested. The US atty said that these individuals would take their bribe, keep some of it and pass some of it along to the college as a donation from the parent to make things look "legit".

This guy bribed the ACT and SAT test facilitators to allow kids to retake tests, to allow kids to take the tests, then have those tests corrected and accepted, have substitute test takers, etc. College coaches would lie and call a student an athletic recruit even though the person had never played, Yale accepted a soccer player who had never played a competitive soccer game ever, but the Yale coach took a bribe and got the college to accept them as a walk on. They left the team after a couple of weeks, but are still enrolled in school. And the kid who could have qualified on merit is at a junior college somewhere.

The NCAA will be involved in this next and likely the Dept. of Education.

356 Fact: Charities are required to spend 5% of their endowments each year. The exception: universities.

Fact: the 35 most prestigious universities in the U.S. have endowments large enough, that if they were required to spend 5% they would not need to charge tuition.

Fact: we spend $45 billion each year on tuition. If we had a $900 billion endowment, college would be free. We already have $300 billion in endowments.

The state and federal government spends $100 billion/year to support universities. Put that in endowments and in 6 years all colleges could be free.

Then tax all students $5,000/year.

Instead of paying $100 billion to colleges, colleges would make money for the government.

They left the team after a couple of weeks, but are still enrolled in school.

Interesting. Just got a blast e-mail from Yale's president (Peter Salovey, a psychologist, dontcha know) imploring the "Yale Community" to believe that he is "profoundly dismayed and disturbed by what we have learned." Salovey himself ought to be shitcanned for his coddling of the undergrad Antifas-in-training; alumni donations are way down since the Halloween costume tantrum of a couple years back and similar incidents showing that Salovey has all the cortical integrity of a pithed frog.

Or, even better, take that amount they are over-withholding and pay down the loan in real time, which is superior. Do they not understand how interest works? Definitely.

509 Germans are big on taking phrases that we say with multiple words and turning them into one word. Like motor vehicle liability insurance becomes Kaftfahrzeug-Haftpflichtversicherung or head district chimney sweep is now Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister

510 I just wanted to use the word 'lieu' in a sentence

It's against the Style Guide to use in a Paris suburb, that would result in a ban lieu.

515 I guess those student loans weren't used for classes like "fiscal discipline" or "math."

If they understood either of those they wouldn't go into debt a hundred grand for a degree they'll never use.

516 Still can't imagine why the FBI bothered with this... Unless the people on the list wore MAGA hats

519 Have these financial wizards figured out that they provided the Treasury with an interest-free loan for the year?

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at March 12, 2019 05:14 PM (oRUl9)

I think that in the grand scheme of things, that loan to the Feds still makes sense, if the alternative was no saving at all.

But of course there are better, easy ways of saving, so your point stands.

------
The French looted all those vowels from the Welsh in the Linguistic Wars."

The English are just as bad, in their own way, meaning that the way they spell things has little to do with how they pronounce them. They turn Worchestershire into a two syllable word.

533 388 Well, I'm glad to see that the FBI is doing important work.

On that topic, can we talk about the Chinese and other foreign students who routinely and famously cheat on their standardized tests and english aptitude tests to get in to US colleges? And how the colleges wink and nod and look the other way because foreign students often pay the full sticker price?

Because that's pretty obnoxious as well.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 12, 2019 05:08 PM (39g3+)

In case you missed it, English also invariably places a "u" after "q". There is a town on Vancouver Island called "Esquimault". Pronounced "ess-kwy-malt", accent on the "kwy".

Found that colleges like, in this order:
1. Grades/class rank
2. Test scores
3. Athletes
4. Scouts (boys or girls)
5. outside school - music or the arts
6. Charity work

Your kid needs them all to get in - its a long process and stressful for the student and parents
