The architecture of Charleston, SC (An Open Thread) [KT]

morris island.jpg

Morris Island

Kind of interesting that a promo photo for a law school features a lighthouse off an island. Law School Life.

Good Morning! I don't remember the last time I saw an architecture/open thread here at AoSHQ. Not up to anything deeper today. This idea came to me earlier this week when Bookworm put up an engaging post about a visit to Charleston, South Carolina. It includes a lot of great photos of historic buildings with some notes on architecture. Includes a home where George Washington partied after the Revolutionary War was over. Plus a nice, concise history of the city, flower photos (including a Lady Banks rose in a cemetery - cemeteries are a thing there) and harbor photos.

I just returned from my first visit to Charleston, South Carolina, and I have to say that I'm in love. I have traveled through most of Europe, whether western, northern, southern or central; wandered around the Baltic and the North Sea; dipped into North Africa; traversed the British Isles; spent time in Israel; and visited sizable parts of Southeast Asia; and even spent time traveling around here in the U.S., but I have to say that I've never seen a more beautiful city than Charleston. Whether the buildings are from the 18th century, the 19th century, or the early 20th century, they are just breathtaking. The erupting spring foliage is breathtaking. The harbor is breathtaking. And of course the history is fascinating.

And there's some Revolutionary War history, too:

Part of the Charleston trip included a visit to Cowpens National Battlefield. This was one of the most pivotal battles in the Revolutionary War. Not only was it a turning point in the war, but it also revealed Daniel Morgan's skill as a military tactician.

That battlefield is now graced with blooming daffodils.

This post is really worth a visit. And it reminds us that The Charleston came from Charleston, South Carolina (though the video there features Ginger Rogers):

I have a niece who lives in South Carolina now, and last year she and her husband visited Charleston with a friend, who is black. They went to the Old Slave Mart Museum, among other places. Didn't get too philosophical about that visit, because, you know Facebook.

Anyway, one of the things that impressed them was what was under some of the historic buildings. Including the Provost Dungeon. Don't see much architecture like that these days. Have you ever explored underground architecture in Charleston or in another city?

Here's a piece on eight styles of architecture, exemplified by 8 historic buildings in Charleston. One was:

Classical Revival, also known as Neo-Classical, emerged during a time when the US was establishing itself as a new nation. Before the Civil War, Charleston prospered and expanded, with many plantation owners building elaborate homes to show off their wealth - Classical Revival, with its large columns, high arches, and triangular roofs, is meant to emanate 'social prominence.' Although The Fireproof Building, now the non-profit South Carolina Historical Society, was built with minimal ornamentation, it is one of Charleston's best examples of Classical Revival. Built in 1827, the Fireproof Building held public safety records and, thus, was the most fire-protected building of its time. It was designed by Robert Mills, the first American-born architect, who worked with other important early American architects like Thomas Jefferson, and was responsible for the Washington Monument.

Which style do you like best?

And here's a piece about how the history of Charleston affected the evolution of architecture there. One interesting development was The Charleston Single House:

As Charleston's native high society became both more sure-footed and more pragmatic in addressing the heat and humidity of their climate, the Charleston single house style--one of Charleston's greatest contributions to American architecture--came about. This style is defined by its layout of rooms, with a street-fronting narrow facade boasting a gabled end but with an elongated side tracing often the length of the lot back from the street. This form allowed for positioning on narrow lots plus the use of open piazzas (porches) that provided for good air flow, as such was most welcome prior to air conditioning.

Something to keep in mind when AOC gets around to re-doing all the buildings in America and shutting off the air conditioning in Washington D.C.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Yes, this is the Thread before the Gardening Thread. You can continue to post comments here after the Gardening Thread and Pet Thread go up.

Our hearts belong to Charleston.

And am getting closer to relocating back daily.

88 read the content ... old architecture adds a lot to a community. So of course AOC and the jihadists always want to destroy old heritage, statues and buildings.

Back in the mid 90s I had a web page already, for my sports league thing, but I had a section on the old farm, and one for Quincy, IL architecture (even though I was in New Orleans). Modern and efficient doesn't do many spires, arches or other attractive embellishments. Quincy claims to have the best historic architecture in the state, pound for pound I guess.

this link is just Bing images, but shows several from my home town.Limestone, sandstone, brick are prominent. Hard to redo them for energy efficiency, but excellent interior woodwork in many.

You mean because he wants to enforce the law passed by the elected representatives of the American voters and signed into law by a duly elected President? The only way the system actually is explicitly designed to work? That's a "Hard Line" position?

Funny there are no "Hard Line" Abortion rights Congress persons, or "Hard Line" Gun Control advocates.

I saw that CA just hit the 33% mark on renewable energy (and also the highest residential electricity rates in the nation). But for the northern coastal half of the state, I don't imagine there is much AC usage.

Practically none in SF itself. Here in south MS, running the AC probably represents 1/2 of the annual bill, maybe more.

128 Good architectural review; the one quibble I would have is where the Neo-Classical inspiration from. After the Napoleonic Wars ended, Great Britain really began to take the idea of Empire to heart, and their architecture began to emulate what they perceived as the Glories of Classical architecture, especially Rome. So the neo-classical style become wildly popular in London, replacing the more stately (but plain) Georgian architecture which had prevailed for the previous century.

And everyone with money in Charleston (as well as the rest of the Eastern Seaboard) was of course eager to emulate the latest London fashions in everything they did.

Those are of course wonderful buildings, but this is one of the reasons I really enjoy classic New Orleans and Southern Louisiana antebellum architecture - it's one of the few places in America that shows a lot of non-British influences from that era.

Pretty much a romp for the Colonials and the militia."

Cowpens is a really fun battle to study; most of the Revolutionary War battles featured pretty poor generalship on both sides. Cowpens is one of the few where truly superior tactics won the day, and made especially satisfying because Morgan was able to use the butcher Tarleton's own arrogance against him.

short story, Tarleton had total contempt for American forces, so Morgan put a force of militia as a screen in front of his main force, and told them to fight for a little bit but then to break and retreat quickly behind the hill. Tarleton saw this, and as Morgan knew he would, Tarleton saw them running and immediately ordered a full charge, causing his troops to break ranks in their pursuit. He in fact had been baited into charging right into a 3 sided trap that Morgan had set for him, and his troops were slaughtered.

And because of this loss of men, the British campaign in the Carolina's collapsed.

Neo-Classical started early, of course - Thomas Jefferson among others used it in his designs. But it was in the 1830's when almost *everything* built publicly or privately started to be built in that style.

The various Victorian styles were a reaction to the very geometrical Neo-Classical style, but they really didn't start to take hold until the 1870's. Meanwhile in France you've got things like Second Empire going on, and some of that filtered over here.

159 Slave quarters.

The reason we know about slave quarters is because some have been preserved.

What you can't see is, quarters of everyone else... They've been, over time, torn down and upgraded, destroyed to make way for the new.

If you think living quarters of slaves was sub-standard, just take a look at where Abraham Lincoln was born.

Log walls, dirt floor, no light other than candles, crude cooking implements.

Hardly a step up from slave quarters.

And, it's not hard to imagine, that millions of people of the time were living in the same or even worse conditions than slaves.

170 And, it's not hard to imagine, that millions of people of the time were living in the same or even worse conditions than slaves."

What we forget in our urban lives is that most people used to live far differently - back when most of our ancestors were farmers, the vast majority of people lived most of their lives outside, not in. A "house" didn't need to be anything more than a 2 room little thing that had one room for cooking and one for sleeping when it was dark - and remember you'd only have candlelight at night, so you didn't stay up long after dark.

Otherwise, you're in the fields or on your horse all day long.

Failing that, go on Craigslist and hire a handyman or dog walker for a few hours. You could arrange to be picked up a few block from your home so some skeevy type wouldn't burgle your house while you were under the knife.

My clinic, in Canada, didn't require that my driver stay with me. Their chief concern, I think is to avoid legal liability that would ensue if they were to knowingly let an impaired person drive themselves home.

Patients must use responsible adults to drive them home who will make sure they get home safely and will be able make sure they can care for themselves when at home. Uber or taxi drivers will not take that responsibility. And, we check. Driver has to come into the center to pick up. We do not allow patients to be picked up at the curb. If patients do not have a ride home, we will cancel surgery.
