The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

My reflexive assumption is that this is the deep state at work. But there is a simple fix, which is an order from the chief administrative officer of the United States of America that "catch and release" is not the law of the land and that continuing that policy is grounds for immediate termination. Then President Trump can fire a few hundred people pour encourager les autres, and the problem will be much more manageable.

So the question is: Why is this occurring? Even assuming that the drop in support is exaggerated, it is troubling.

Support for Trump dwindles among ICE officers

ICE officers who endorsed President Trump in 2016 now say he has failed to follow through on his get-tough promises, saying catch-and-release of immigrants living illegally in the U.S. is not only still happening, but has gone into “overdrive.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers say they’re being roped into such mundane tasks as opening the doors on vans to release immigrants already caught by Border Patrol agents. That’s dragging the officers from their usual duties of nabbing fugitives, or scouring local prisons and jails for immigrant criminals who lived illegally in the U.S. ready to be deported.

The shell game is all the more “ridiculous,” the officers said, because Border Patrol agents could fill out paperwork and open the doors themselves, but the agency’s leaders don’t want to be part of catch-and-release.

“Hundreds of man hours are wasted each day at a time of crisis on the border,” the leaders of the National ICE Council, the union that represents ICE officers, said in a letter sent directly to Mr. Trump on Monday.

Until this changes we will continue to lose the battle to protect our borders and protect our nation. American Exceptionalism is rapidly going the way of the passenger pigeon. My most fervent hope is that the American people continue to focus on this issue and continue to press, however mildly, for substantive changes. My personal view of immigration has changed because of the chaos at our borders. I used to be conditionally supportive of limited immigration for qualified applicants (educated, with some financial means, etc), but now I am rapidly morphing into an absolutist. Shut the damned border down for a generation while culling the welfare rolls and prisons of anyone here illegally. Throw them the fvck out. And then start with companies who hire illegals. Fines and imprisonment, and if necessary force the sale of companies that employ more than a certain % of illegals.

They are anti-American, and do not deserve the protections of our laws.

******

Ah...Venezuela writ small.

Because of the administration's hatred of cars, they have destroyed traffic flow in NYC, all for the benefit of a few thousand bicyclists. Garbage is piling up in the streets unlike anything since the 1980s. The subways are a disaster, and the crypto-communists in power want to pay for the repairs (it's a rebuild that will take a generation) with "congestion pricing" for midtown Manhattan. That is nothing more than a nastily regressive tax, because the wealthy don't care, and it will fall disproportionately on tradesmen and the middle class.

And let us not forget that the bum population is exploding, street crime is exploding but not counted in the statistics because they have decriminalized some of it and ignore the rest, and taxes are absolutely out of control.

New York City is edging toward financial disaster, experts warn

New York City is careening closer to all-out financial bankruptcy for the first time since Mayor Abraham Beame ran the city more than 40 years ago, experts say.

As tax-fleeced businesses and individuals flee en masse, and city public spending surges into the stratosphere, financial analysts say Gotham is perilously near total fiscal disaster.

Unlike the last one, the financial companies and other big businesses are much more able to move operations out of the city, or simply expand telecommuting. So while most of the big corporations will continue to have a presence in NYC, it is possible that their employee base will shrink in response to the ridiculous costs associated with working in Manhattan. That sounds like a recipe for disaster for de Blasio. No, I am not grinning. Really.

I honestly believe that Trump wanted and wants a wall - but not simply for votes. Of the things that need to be done -- end catch and release, end chain migration, end anchor babies, crackdown on visa overstays-- the wall is probably the easiest and makes the least difference.

Fines and imprisonment, and if necessary force the sale of companies that employ more than a certain % of illegals.

Big companies now are pretty careful in hiring because the fines against them for having somewhere around ten or more illegals are kinda severe. So they 'work around' that by using subcontractors. A ton of them. Each subcontractor might have nine illegals on the payroll.

Call Comcast for some sort of work requiring manual labor and that's who you get - Manuel. Who speaks some form of English but his 'crew' is all Spanish speakers.

Everybody is scamming the system and it needs to end.

I think his commitment is fine, and remains. What is illusory is his ability to run a large organization by himself - he doesn't have the ability. I believe he's always been able, in his business life, to count on extremely skilled managers who would run things well for him because they were allowed to share in the profit. BUT Government does not work that way, Trump has never really quite grasped that, and instead he is counting on people who all have their own agendas, which are not his. And he doesn't seem to be able to find many people who are both capable and who will follow HIS agenda, rather than their own. There's a few that do a good job, but not nearly as many as their should be.

Reminds me of Grant's first effort to get Sumner to work with him.

Grant, the new president and former commander of the army during the Civil War, saw Sumner as a lieutenant and would carry out his orders regarding some matters (in particular Santo Domingo).

Sumner turned right around and started working against Grant.

He had expected Sumner to operate like a junior officer.

Now, not only does Trump have "subordinates" in Congress who don't do what he says, he also has subordinates in his own organization that undermine him.

All the while, conservatives go along with rationally mild policies that never get implemented. I don't want to criticize you in particular, but now you're morphing after the disaster has happened and it may be too late.

58 imo, the ICE thing is happening as part of the coup, the Hillary declared WAR (resistance is a military term, like "the French resistance"). The DeepState subverts orders from the top.

But Trump COULD handle this, so I surmise he is compromised by misinformation (which the NSA and others have done for a long time) or coercion from the Mueller mafia, OR threats from the globalists that they will crash markets (or hit in other vulnerable places) if Trump moves decisively.

OR Trump has recognized that the corruption is so deep, and the house of cards so unstable, that strong action could be nearly cataclysmic. OR Trump has other blackmail material out on him, or just wants to be liked by the elitists, and has been fooling the patriots. Probably a combination of all of those.

The one surprise would be actual prosecution of the crooks (#2weeks), but the mass invasion to overthrow us indicates we are running the left's plan, not the (alleged) Trump America First plan.

++++++++++++
Outside of the tax issues, doesn't this represent a full reversal of the Giuliani-era "broken windows" policing shift? If I recall correctly, Giuliani ordered the police to go after exactly these "nuisance crimes" like public vagrancy and turnstile jumping to improve quality of life and then lo and behold, the crime rate started dropping and the city got a lot safer. The theory on this (again, if my basic understanding is correct) is that improving the general situation will reduce crime both because those who commit nuisance crimes also have a higher probability of committing serious crimes and because it makes the environment better and therefore less conducive to serious crime.

This can go too far (I think "stop and frisk" was too far), but NYC's "broken windows" policing appears to have worked very well. Turning that back to the pre-"broken windows" policing scheme - if that is indeed what happened here - seems insane and that the results should have been expected.

Am I way off base on all of this, or is it as mad as it appears?

This is what a cascade failure looks like - each link in the chain is too weak to withstand the stress, and so the instability strengthens as it moves.

This is the prime argument in favor of not just sitting back and watching everyone in Venezuela die while saying "well, not our circus, not our monkeys".

67 $100k per illegal, per year, for every business that
either knowingly employed them or didn't take reasonable precautions
against employing them. $50k for each, personally, to the proprietors
or board members.

Any business unable to pay such fines will be seized and sold at auction.

Make it ruinous to both the entity and the individuals.

Posted by: Cato, Media Delenda Est at March 12, 2019 11:13 AM (J+mig)

I don't think that's harsh enough. Especially since punishments will be bargained down. There needs to be mandatory jail time for all corporate officers. Something like 1 year per illegal employee.

And let us not forget that the bum population is exploding, street
crime is exploding but not counted in the statistics because they have
decriminalized some of it and ignore the rest, and taxes are absolutely
out of control.

Considering how hard-won the clean up of Manhattan streets was back in the 80's and 90's, this is heartbreaking. Vagrants are using building vestibules as bathrooms once again. Pedestrians again run the risk of being assaulted by the homeless as the walk along sidewalks, or cross streets. Panhandlers demand tolls to cross Broadway, and are squeegee- ing cars again. It's terrible, and yet it is DELIBERATE City policy. Hard to fucking believe.

Your experience is wildly different from mine. When I have been in San Francisco proper (as opposed to out in Silicon Valley), I *have* had to step over street people and their detritus, been pursued by very aggressive bums (though not mugged), had to dodge hypodermics (though not human shit), etc.

Maybe it was part of town or the fact that I usually spend time in San Francisco proper for conferences and those are considered ripe targets for aggressive behavior by the homeless population (go pursue groups of out-of-towners). I am not sure. I have definitely experienced the "homeless and filth" problem of San Francisco first hand, though, even when I walk well outside of the conference district for a meal, etc. It could also be a time-of-year thing, as I am usually there in summer.

That depends.

Do the Democrats nominate Biden? Then, yeah, the far left will have ammunition against the center left by saying, "We've tried your way and failed, so now it's our turn," and more people within the party will be willing to listen.

On the other hand, if they nominate almost literally anyone else (aside from maybe Kamala), it will be a far left victory and the center left will have their chance to crowd out the far left in the primary for 2024.

It is a prime argument for extremely tight and effective border control and deportation. "We should help those communists because if we don't, they'll invade us after the collapse" is an argument designed to hold us hostage and guarantee military action and also won't solve the problem. What we need to good physical border security and to unshackle the immigration system so we can detain people *briefly* before ejecting them and end this catch-and-release crap. If you're gonna make an asylum claim, you should be given the choice to remain in prison until you're processed or you can be issued with a cheap gadget like a cell phone to allow you to be processed remotely should you elect to be deported pending your hearing.

And there's no law saying he has to check out the fake number - and it's even better, the employer can get in trouble with any number of anti-discrimination rules and policies if he asks anything about Race or National Origin when hiring.

It's almost like it was all planned out so that people could pretend they were doing one thing, while they were actually doing the opposite.

yes, that is what I thought. Trump promised to build the wall starting day one. A little exaggeration is fine, but he had the same money and authority then as now, but did nothing. Now he will contend with Pelosi's commies ... if he plans to spend the $8B he should start now and stop catch and release so he wins in 2020.

But maybe he has decided to go the appeasement route, and figure he has our votes already. I think THAT is why Coulter became so vocal with him, so he turned on the one that gave him the winning message -- her book, and I think he talked with her several times ... he even said something like "I didn't return her call, so she is mad" ... it is not PERSONAL Donald, you won on the promises ... Build the Wall, Lock her Up ... America is the jilted one.

Yes Trump has done some things that could have been done by Jeb!, and many other things ... but those two things for the base are most important for them, and for our future. or he is just a bump in their road.

Now, the voter ID law was placed on the ballot statewide, and passed convincingly. The judge has now declared that since the referendum was placed on the ballot by a legislature elected (by his standard) from 'gerrymandered' districts, it is not legal.

Note, he cannot make an argument against the legality of the ID Law (it's fine), or the fact that it was passed statewide by the voters. So, he uses an obtuse argument to invalidate it.

I'm not entirely sure what the status is on that. I do recall that WalMart had a million dollar interaction with the feds 15 years ago or so relating to one of their subcontractors (janitorial?) having hired illegals.
Questioning the validity of anyone's documents was and probably still is asking for trouble. So is accepting their documents if they are fake. The I-9 system was a total cluster back in the day, and I have no reason to believe that it has changed at all.

No. We have e-verify, which is the liability limiter. You use e-verify to confirm citizenship. If they pass e-verify, then your liability ends there if they end up being an illegal alien. If they fail e-verify, I can even see having a 6-month grace period that can be used at the employer's discretion to allow the person to follow up and deal with the paperwork problem. Each employee can only use that grace period once.

I've no problem with it in that context, but illegal aliens are more akin to an invasive species that's destroying our ecosystem. If they're released at all, it should be into their natural environment.

The more I think about that analogy the more it rings true. There are no natural checks on their behavior or locust like expansion, they bring a host of diseases and environmental damage we're not equipped to cope with, etc.

However, if I know I have to go to the DMV I bring a book or some work and am fairly patient because I know the wait is going to be longer than I'd like. I'm not looking at my phone because it's an ancient one, and all I can get on it is text messages, and I'm just not that popular. 268 No socialism makes perfect sense and appeals to the more logically oriented sorts, and pinheads, of course. If you buy into the theory then it accounts for everything, has a ready answer waiting, offers stimulating debate with fellow travelers and advancement for the mediocre. It has everything going for it except it doesn't work and it ignores all that was ever known about humanity.

I firmly believe that we will have it in relatively short order, after Trump is gone. Maybe not named as such. If you accept deep State actors as a reality, then possibly it's being allowed with the idea of killing the chicken in front of the monkey. Allow it, crash the economy, accelerate the natural death of socialism and cash in on the fall. Paging Soros.

I know that's cynical.

I kind of think maybe other elites saw the same thing coming in other countries and tried it before. Socialism has it's own defenses against this manipulation and it can linger on longer than expected.

Money goes right to the corps and largely to China, and/or the richest on Wall Street, and the banks lending out more than they have. Debt for consumers, debt for the state ... Globalists own everything. A few with mutual funds are happy, for now, but vulnerable.
Posted by: illiniwek at March 12, 2019 11:48 AM (Cus5s)

You mean globalists support entitlements because that means taxpayers are paying the recipients to buy the globalists' stuff? Why, that sounds almost unethical. People forced to pay for products and services that they don't use. People paying to bail out companies whose products and services they don't use.

It is corrupt to the core. In part by corrupt management of the exams, in part by the affirmative action requirements levied by government.
Also making parents desperate is that they are learning that when little Johnnie/Judy have reached high school, they are functionally illiterate.

Posted by: Diogenes at March 12, 2019 11:55 AM (0tfLf)

279 e-verify could work if they wanted. Trump has been convinced we need massive legal immigration. But the H1B brings a wife and maybe kids, or has child citizens here. IF they became American to the core, maybe OK, but are our college kids still being pushed out of the better jobs?

In the end, cheap labor to enrich the corporations is not the best answer. We can't do that to compete with China (or India) that cheat, pollute, treat people like slaves, and are commie (or a version of tyranny). But the Bush Doctrine of spreading democracy did not go smoothly, and enriched China as we spent trillions accomplishing little in MENA. But surrendering national heritage to the third world invasion is no solution, it is surrender to "fascism".

Posted by: willow at March 12, 2019 12:02 PM (gLMhO)

291 No.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 12, 2019 11:48 AM (I2dne)

That's a good answer. I'm fine with drastic penalties for employers knowingly and willfully hiring illegals, but the flip side of the coin is that there has to be an easily-met standard for due diligence.

311 Trump has made it absolutely clear that he is not interested in _doing_ anything about this. He is only interested in _looking_ like he's doing something about it.

Electing Trump in 2016 was a good move. De-electing Trump in 2020 will also be a good move. Even if it means President Kamala. This business of constantly rewarding failure theater has to stop.
