The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The American presence throughout the world is a positive for both the country and the world, and know-nothings who demand that we withdraw completely are ignorant of the realities of geopolitics.

There are substantive discussions to be had about the exact level of involvement in the many countries in which we have a military presence, and even more substantive discussions about the goals of that involvement.

But involved we must be. Because the Russians and the Chinese and the Iranians and the Cubans and the Pakistanis and the North Koreans and the many other bad or neutral actors will swiftly fill the void if we bury our heads in the sand and affect an air of isolationism.

This is not a binary decision, and anyone who reduces it to that is ignorant. There is a significant difference between the out-of-control nation building that the neo-cons and the Bushes just love, and a robust foreign policy that projects our power, keeps the bad guys' heads down, and does not risk the lives of our fighting men for some amorphous goals.

That is an achievable objective, and President Trump has made significant moves in that direction. Have we withdrawn from Syria? Of course not. Have we limited our daily exposure? Yes, but without ceding the battle-space to Iran and Russia and Sunni terrorists.

We have made significant mistakes in the last generation, and many thousands of our fighting men have paid a heavy price. But shrinking American power to within our borders will do nothing but embolden our enemies, and in the long run will cost us many more lives, and much more gold.

Trump Judicial Strategy Nets a Fifth of Appeals Court Seats
President Donald Trump has filled 20 percent of the nation's federal appeals seats in his swift bid to reshape the judiciary with strong conservatives, and the emphasis could soon shift to accelerating district court confirmations.
Hey Bill! Cap'n Bill! How's the fluffing of the Democrat party going for you? And you over there! The postman's son? Your 15 minutes are up! And has anyone seen Karl Rove? Oh...I would mention the ex-Speaker of The House, but I don't remember his name!

With apologies to Colonel Kilgore:

"Smell that? You smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a court bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' Dem judge. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole court. Smelled like… Victory. Someday this war's gonna end…"

Not bad. Some good twists, a real ghost horror story. No happy endings.

It's interesting that the South Koreans seem to have the same cinematic 'language' we do in the US. Apart from the language, they make movies that I can enjoy very easily. In fact, they feel more 'American' than French, German or Italian cinema, even.

I haven't found too many weird quirks like in Japanese or Chinese movies, though the Hong Kong films of the 60-90's are also very accessible, if exotic.

This has all been timed for a while. It started with Mueller giving Trump the questions last fall and the clearest signal of the impending end was Rosenstein retiring but saying he wanted to stay on until Mueller wrapped up, a time that was speculated as mid-March. 84 50 It's interesting that the South Koreans seem to have the same cinematic 'language' we do in the US.

I too have seen some interesting Korean movies. While, like Chinese movie, they are overly sentimental, and have buffonish type comedy characters, I think the fact that Korea has been conquered almost continually for the last several centuries causes them to have fewer illusions and delusions about reality
Posted by: Anonymous White Male at March 14, 2019 11:07 AM (3sjI6)

Unlike Chinese films, men and women relate in a fairly 'western' manner. (And they have a lot of slammin hotties in Korean cinema)

The almost-slapstick buffoon characters are there, but they aren't as annoying, somehow.

There's a lot of casual slapping and hitting in the movies, which reminds me of old 30's films

87 Dear Diary,

Day 62 of no press briefings. It is tough on all of us heroic journalists but I think even more so for those that knew the wonder and awe of the Obama years. It has been particularly difficult and hard on me with knowing what a great president and press secretary we used to have. i still remember those 18 press conferences Obama gave in his 8 years as president. the 4 or 5 questions he would ask to the select and same few journalists. it was magical.

Now, I just... just I don't know the horror of the current occupier of the White House giving impromptu press briefings 2-3 times a week is too much even for a strong and brave soul such as myself.

I will struggle to carry on because so many people want and need my hard and brave work. I only hoe that I can be worthy of their trust in real news.

Paul Erlich had just released his infamous "Population Bomb" a couple of months before that ad was cut, and Bobby Kennedy was pitching his appeal to all the pseudo-intellectuals and counterculture warriors who had gone gaga over it.

and the greatest irony is that Erlich's book was just a slightly updated rewrite of a book published in 1798 by Robert Malthus, which had predicted the End of Civilization due to overpopulation early in the 19th Century.

The maddening thing about the Malthusians is that they have been wrong in EVERY prediction they have made for over 2 CENTURIES now, and STILL people keep lining up to hear more of it!

104 Using "know-nothing" and "out of control nation-building" in the same argument is unintentional irony fitting for the times.

Projecting power effectively can often include exploiting your success and doing things to reduce risks, over time. And reduce the chances for more intervention in the future. So unlike idiotic TV shows or movies or an 18th century punitive raid, you don't just drive by and bomb s**t and talk tough.

Yep, it's not binary, and pretending it always is, is pretty stupid.
But so is getting lost in mostly make-believe concepts and terms like
"nation building".

Every situation is different, and the best response will vary quite a bit. But it's fairly clear that the US is now a fundamentally unserious country, and putting any of its military at risk, anywhere, for anything more than one-off or extremely short-term operations is an indefensible moral hazard.

Why hasn't former NY AG and Luv Guv Elliot Spitsandswallows been charged with human trafficking for bringing hookers across state lines? Anyone else seeing a pattern with NY AGs?
But the fact that its not happening is sadly more proof that AG Barr is part of the Swamp.

When the white, male doctor and the nurse (who was not a person of color, either) checked in on me, I asked when my butt would feel normal again.

"Oh, you don't remember, Miss Larsen... you no longer have a butt."

Then everything came back to me in a rush... "Total Glutectomy," they'd said.

What was I to do? An actress without a personality has to have a butt. That was just an accepted fact. The hospital had no available butt donors - I would have to accept a donor butt harvested from a large snake.

Thus began my struggle. No personality. No talent. A snake butt. A lot of people would have given up on acting. A lot of people told me to.

But those people don't know the power of a strong woman in the face of adversity.

Rep Collins is a true public servant , imo, and I'm sending him a small donation for every transcript he releases, since I bl there will be more to come.

I've been dropping links here to a writer named Jeff Carlson. He is also one of the best researchers I have come across on the internet.

Someone, perhaps Collins, has been giving him access to the transcripts for weeks and he has been writing a series of articles describing what is in the transcripts. Now that a few have been released it is clear that he was spot on and obviously so the complete unredacted transcripts.

His latest effort came out late last night. It is a breakdown of Nellie Ohr's testimony and it might be the most enlightening one so far.

It appears Nellie spent the 6 years prior to her time with Fusion at the CIA in a relatively new organization known as Open Source Works. The group did basically what it sounds like, scoured open source information for potential intelligence leads. Sort of like what she did at Fusion. And it also has come to light that both she and her husband served on a CIA sponsored working group in 2010.

The implication is that Fusion is tied extremely closely to the CIA. Perhaps with no separation at all. And it was John Brennan who was first to get evidence that he claimed showed Russia was working to influence the election and sway it for Trump. Information he gave to Harry Reid in the summer of 2016 which Reid used as a trigger to write a letter to Comey.

I don't think this is going away anytime soon.

209 CBD, love ya like a brother, but you know where I am with this. You draw a line, but you have to know that until we clean house and do a hard reset here at home, your policy will get changed into their policies. Until that reset can take place, anything we do abroad will get morphed into the same old waste of blood and treasure.

And the Chinese and Rooskis know this. It's why they've been funding our enemies domestic. We'll either turtle up or rope-a-dope ourselves and they get what we want either way.

It's going to be shit worldwide for a while, but we gotta take care of business here, first and foremost, before any kind of foreign involvement will result in anything more than death and tears.

210 Re: reparations link in sidebar.

As a West African whose ancestors may have sold their brothers and sisters into slavery, do I also have to pay African Americans reparations?

Does Obama also have to pay? He has no slave ancestors but I believe his mom's line has slave owners.

What about blacks with both slave and slave owner and blood?

How will the money be collected?

Will they have to do DNA tests to make sure people with white blood are correctly identified?

For mixed race people, will it matter what the nonwhite race is. Eg, half Asians have to pay but half blacks do not?

It would totally not be a racist endeavor, not at all.

My ignorant self would suggest trying to work on things like improving family structure (no govt intervention needed, though they would need to pull back) or education, e.g., releasing kids from the stranglehold of teacher's unions. You know, teaching a man to fish rather than giving him a fish. Sure, it's a lot harder to do but it's better in the long run.

But, if nothing else, your Colonel Kilgore quote should remind us that chasing every foe around the globe to prevent some domino theory is foolish. We failed miserably in southeast Asia.. and to what end? Communism died there just as it did elsewhere.. on its own.

But if they bribe a functionary of that university to go against stated policy, and falsify documents in order that their dull-witted child wins some sort of "merit-based" entry to the school, then that fucks over those entrants who have actual merit.

If they refuse, they can never again call or ask for reparations. They chose America, good and bad, and have to make their way like everyone else, for better or worse.

How many would take that deal? How much would have to be on offer?

The vast majority of our interventions in the last 50 years in Africa and the Middle East have been about one thing....oil.

Everyone thought we were going to be running out of oil soon and we had to be there to attempt to stabilize those places so oil prices wouldn't skyrocket and crush our economy.

That is no longer true. We produce more oil than we consume now, and it appears it will stay that way for 50+ years according to the experts.

We no longer have a "real" concrete reason to be over there other than preventing Iran, Russia, China, Cuba, et. al for expanding their influence.

As one of the people who spent 22 years being sent to $hithole after $hithole to fix stuff I say we need to back off and give our military a breather from that.

We have been fighting in Afghanistan for 17 years and we still have no exit strategy in sight. We will be deploying troops over there for the next 75 years with no end in sight and no goals other than "we can't let the taliban get control again".

Zod knows better. The Chinese are all over Africa. They aren't there for the climate. They are there for the resources.

Rare earth metals are just that, rare, and the key building blocks for much of the emerging new technology in battery storage and common electronics like cell phones. China dominates the known world deposits but more have been discovered in Africa and it is a race to see who gets the rights. And that's just one example.

We can certainly pull back from the world and isolate ourselves. Our rivals won't. Wherever we leave, they pour in to fill the vacuum. Actions have consequences. So does lack of action. It's naive to think if we pull back from the world we won't be paying for it down the road in one fashion or another.

I get that, Jack. However, retrenchment is in order until this 5th column at home is dealt with.

281 Just out of curiosity, why do you think China is in Africa, Iran is pushing for Syria, etc., if they are just worthless shitholes?
Posted by: JackStraw
........

China in Africa? They are raping them for their resources.. At least when the Europeans did it, they provided some infrastructure.. The Chinese not so much.

African nations are embracing China because the Chinese are at least willing to pay for access to those resources. And China needs resources.

Iran's interest in the region, especially Syria seems to be a combination of things.. and I do not have a grasp of the whole picture, especially the religious part. But access to Mediterranean ports has got to be a big part of it.

China is simply using our money ($300 Billion in trade deficit per year) to buy up resources (through loans to these shithole countries that can never be repaid) and leasing strategic ports in Africa.. how do we stop that? Militarily???

There is a balance between endless wars and being present where needed. I like Trump's approach quite a bit.

I think that leaves us plenty of resources to deal with what is going on at home.

It takes political will to intervene abroad. The spectacle of the Bushyrovies defending Iraq's borders but not our own should be instructive.

Just to secure our own border may take lots of political capital.

Very. Having a ton of oil doesn't do you much good if you can't get it to market. The proposed pipeline from Iran, through Iraq to either Syria or Turkey has been on the drawing board for well over a decade interrupted mainly by the war.

I don't think there are many here who are arguing for a return to the neocon days. Trump has been pretty blunt about our allies having to start shouldering more of the mutual load. I just don't see the world's sole super power completely declining the burdens that come with that designation and expecting to reap the same rewards.

293 IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: –
"We invaded you last night – we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: –
"Though we know we should defeat you,
we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"

294 As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
