Communism surely was.
Stalin made everything "not" communism as fascism.
But Stalin directed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which was a temporary alignment of two harshly socialist left wing dictatorships.
The Germans should have known better, but were seduced by the whole idea of "alles ist ordenen!" which has a slightly different meaning in German than the strict translation to English.
