Multiple Sources: When "Jussie" Smollet Didn't Get a Big Enough Media Reaction From His Fake "MAGA" Hate Mail, He Escalated Into Staging the Fake Attack
"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, upset after a racist letter sent to the sho'’s studio didn’t get a "bigger reaction," is suspected of paying two men to attack him a week later, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the investigation. "When the letter didn't get enough attention, he concocted the staged attack," a source told CBS 2 Investigator Brad Edwards. Other sources corroborated that information.If this report is correct, and cops found the magazine out of which the words of the "threatening letter" had been cut, that's pretty much game over. Though Jussie Smollet can claim the brothers did it without his knowledge. Kind of hard to explain why he ID'd them as white, though, and why he didn't recognize his friends.
De Mar spoke on the phone exclusively with the Osundairo brothers Monday afternoon. In a joint statement, they said: "We are not racist. We are not homophobic, and we are not anti-Trump. We were born and raised in Chicago and are American citizens." Smollett received a letter containing a white powder Jan. 22. The letter was mailed to Chicago's Cinespace Studios, where the show "Empire" is filmed. The letter prompted a HAZMAT response. CPD says the "white substance" was later determined to be aspirin. The note was crafted with letters apparently cut out from magazines to form words. The pieced-together message contained racial and homophobic threats directed at Smollett. A magazine is one of the pieces of evidence retrieved from the brother’s home last week during a search conducted by CPD. Investigators also recovered a book of stamps.Was this all a viral marketing hoax to promote the "anti-lynching bill" Kamala Harris was using to get herself attention?

Well, I thinnkk the scale is set in the UK. I thought it was the US, but the average IQ in the US is like a 98, so that wouldn't make sense.
But anyways, the scale is set to "the average" of 100. 15 is one standard deviation.
So 68% of people within the UK (or US if I'm wrong about who sets the scale) are within 85-115, and 95% of people are within the 70-130 range.

I think that that's exactly right. The two clowns mentioned above in ordinary day-to-day transactions (in, say, a grocery story) probably could pass for average IQ. But when they got into an expository mode, it was painfully apparent that they weren't too bright.
I had a colleague who was nuts (diagnosed as such by professionals, who periodically spent time in the nut barn) who was much the same. In superficial interactions, it wasn't obvious. It was only when he began talking at length extemporaneously that it became apparent that he was way off dead center.

Basically if you have an IQ below 60 or above 140 you a pretty rare bird. Below 70 and above 130 still not at all common. Small percentages.

I dated a girl like that once.
Not the nuts part, the intelligence part.
In regular interactions, she seemed normal.
But in anything that required a *bit* of mental processing, she always seemed...
behind the curve, if you will.
I have no idea what her IQ was, but having spent a lot of time with her, I realized that it was ... not very high.
She was an education major in college, I think she's a middle school teacher now. So she has that going for her.
My first clue that she was kind of dumb should have been how she always told me and everyone else who would listen how much of a genius I am.
Which... I'm not.
But I guess it's all comparative.

I don't necessarily question the IQ calculation in this case, but I do question the correlation to intelligence across cultures. I really find it hard to believe that people in Equatorial Guinea are generally innately borderline(?) retarded. Sure, the country may be backwards, but if you had white people there who had been immersed in the culture like the black natives, i.e.,with no exposure to the West, I don't think the y would fare much better.

Um yeah, the IQ test presumes a certain level of cultural familiarity with the west and concepts that we share intellectually. What those tribesmen know and can do would leave us dumbfounded and likely dying under a bush somewhere because we are ignorant of. Just because you do poorly on an IQ test doesn't mean you're stupid, necessarily. And just because you do really well doesn't mean you're particularly bright.

Um yeah, the IQ test presumes a certain level of cultural familiarity with the west and concepts that we share intellectually. What those tribesmen know and can do would leave us dumbfounded and likely dying under a bush somewhere because we are ignorant of. Just because you do poorly on an IQ test doesn't mean you're stupid, necessarily. And just because you do really well doesn't mean you're particularly bright.

Not really true. IQ tests are pretty carefully designed nowadays to be culture-independent. Raven's matrices, for example, has no language whatsoever. It's strictly visual, and essentially tests things like recognizing parallels and identifying patterns, that sort of thing. It can be administered to people are completely illiterate.

This. IQ "science" is pretty much a joke. It's a bunch of barely-educated guessing.*
There is a whole lot of cultural influence on IQ.
Sometimes there is a racial basis for it - such as with Arabs, whose cultural predilection for incest has driven their intelligence down. But I think a major cultural shift towards education would drastically improve "IQ" scores in a lot of countries.
*Full disclosure: I'm not the smartest guy, and I say dumb shit sometimes. But I wouldn't say I'm a dull normal, either. But that's what my IQ test as a kid said. They wanted to put me in special-ed, which my mother would not allow. Within a couple of years, I was in the gifted-and-talented program. Hence, my skepticism about all of that.

I read a story a few months ago at another site about a teacher who's conflicted, because she has a student in her classes who's about 12 and is insanely smart; tests over 150 on IQ tests; and yet goes out of his way to be especially rude and cruel to everyone else in her classroom, because he's been taught by his parents he's superior to them. Basically no one can say or do anything in this brat's classroom without having to listen to him tell him how stupid and worthless they are.
This teacher, unfortunately, seemed to kind of agree with the parents. She sorta/kinda liked his smart-ass retorts to other kids even when they weren't warranted, and seemed to be going out of her way to excuse his hateful behavior, because she seems to believe the rest of her students are, to put it kindly, just plain stupid. It didn't help that his parents' attitude, when they were called out, would respond "you and all your other kids in your class are inferior anyway, why should we give a shit what you think of our wonderful little genius?"
I responded, and these are almost my exact words, "I don't care how incredibly intellectually gifted this brain-swollen little freak is. If any child in my classroom chose to behave like that, repeatedly, they would find themselves kicked out of it." I went on about how this especially makes me apeshit given that I was horribly abused and ridiculed in school, and most if not all my teachers frankly didn't care enough to ever really help me do anything about it.
Anyway, just had to throw this out there.

Jordan Peterson characterizes IQ tests as the soundest aspect of psychology. Take that as you will.
I don't believe education has much influence, frankly. First, IQ tests are typically administered around age 12 (hence the "quotient" part). Second, tests don't ask candidates to do calculus or summarize Gravity's Rainbow or anything drawing on educational experience. IIRC, they're typically of the form "complete the series" showing a triangle, a square, a pentagon and then offering a number of choices, i.e., pattern recognition. That only requires the ability to count to six.

Aside from that being an example of how things can affect you culturally with tests... if you're in a jungle, seeing regular specific geometric shapes is the outlier, not the commonality. You might see a hexagon as part of a pattern on the back of a beetle as part of a but not just a hexagon. And you've never likely had any experience with abstract thought, looking at a symbol on a page and thinking of it as a symbol. Some of these tribes have no written language or even symbology beyond wavy lines painted on a chest for special rituals.
Culture matters. The hard part is to get people to step outside theirs so they can see how much its a part of them without being aware of it.

I went on about how this especially makes me apeshit given that I was horribly abused and ridiculed in school, and most if not all my teachers frankly didn't care enough to ever really help me do anything about it.

One of the few things I've found that I can't do, literally cannot is understand how to mitre. I can't do it and since I usually don't have trouble understanding things if I put in the effort, I find this gap meaningful. I suppose it is as you describe.
I do know that my sons and my husband can't locate an object they've "lost" in the house and it takes me less than 60 seconds. I find that strange. I've always thought that came from hunter vs gatherer.

IQ aims to test these same basic capabilities of the brain/mind. Now, you can argue about which tests more accurately measure the quality you're trying to gauge and which qualities have what impact on overall "intelligence" but the general idea of the testing is sound and sensible.
The most important aspects of intelligence are mathematical ability and pattern recognition - which have nothing to do with culture.
