Gun Thread: Carbine Madness! [Weasel]

churchill w m1 carbine scaled.jpg
W. Churchill firing his favorite carbine

For Pete's sake! Even Churchill himself didn't fancy the Jungle Carbine! Just look at what he's shooting! Last week we saw what the Brits had to offer in a carbine rifle, so let's return to America and see what our guys were using, shall we?

After having a look at the Enfield "Jungle Carbine" last week I thought it only made sense to see what Americans fielded during WWII; the M1 Carbine. Where the No.5 Mk.1 was considered by most to be unpleasant to shoot, it was nearly universally praised for it's compact size and light weight. Even lighter and smaller, the M1 Carbine is an absolute pleasure to shoot with the most notable difference being the cartridge, as we'll see a little later.

The following example was made by General Motors, Inland Division, in 1944.

m1 carbine 1 scaled.jpg

m1 carbine 2 scaled.jpg

As often happens in the world of government contracting, the design and acceptance of the rifle is a complicated story, so I'll try to boil it down to the salient points. Prior to WWII, the Army had decided the M1 Garand primary battle rifle was too big and clunky for suport troops and paratroopers and requested a smaller, lighter rifle be developed. The Winchester design eventually prevailed and went into production in 1941. The semi-automatic carbine, a gas operated, rotating bolt design, is approximately 36 inches in length and weighs in at just over 5 pounds. An even more compact version with a folding stock was developed for Airborne units. With production ending in 1945, more than 6 million of the rifles were made and have seen use by armies and civilians around the world, even to this day.

m1 carbine bolt view scaled.jpg

Ammunition
A new cartridge was developed for the rifle based on the .32 Winchester. This new round, known as the .30 Carbine, is a rimless 7.62x33mm cartridge with a 110gr round nose bullet, a muzzle velocity of just under 2,000 fps, and an effective range of about 300 yards. The cartridge performance is remarkably similar in both velocity and energy to the .357 Magnum.

This makes the the rifle considerably less powerful than the M1 Garand, but with greater penetration than the .45 cal Thompson submachine gun. There were reports of marginal effectiveness at the extreme limits of it's range, but inside about 50 yards where most engagements occurred, it was highly effective.

3 carb and 303 brit scaled.jpg
.30 Carbine (l) and .303 British (r)

So now we see the difference in the cartridges. A G.I. could carry considerably more ammunition for the M1 Carbine than they could for the Jungle Carbine, but with a significant corresponding reduction in firepower. The .30 carbine delivers around 970 ft lbs of energy versus about 2,550 ft lbs for the .303 British.

m1 carb and JC scaled.jpg
Enfield No.5 Mk 1 (top) and M1 Carbine (bottom)

Side-by-Side Comparison
The M1 Carbine is a semi-automatic rifle with a 15 round magazine where the Jungle Carbine is a bolt rifle with a 10 round magazine capacity. Later the M1 Carbine would be offered in a fully automatic version with a 30 round magazine. We sort of touched on this last week; the Jungle Carbine has significant felt recoil, but would you notice that in combat? I'm not sure that I would. Conversely, would you trade the knock down power of the .303 British for a greater number of .30 Carbine cartridges with excellent penetration, particularly at close range?

Manufacturers
Always of considerable interest to me is the list of companies who produced rifles and other war materiel under wartime contract. Manufacturers of the M1 Carbine included:

- Inland Division, General Motors
- Winchester Repeating Arms
- Irwin-Pedersen
- Saginaw Steering Gear Division, General Motors
- Underwood Elliot Fisher
- National Postal Meter
- Quality Hardware Manufacturing Corp.
- International Business Machines
- Standard Products
- Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation
- Commercial Controls Corporation

Does anyone else find the wartime production conversion from automobiles, typewriters, postal meters and juke boxes to rifles interesting? I once had someone suggest a couple of books on the subject, but cannot recall the titles now. Anyone have any recommendations?

48 The early M1 carbines had a driftable rear sight and no bayonet lug.

Later, either after 1943 or Korea, they got the adjustable rear sight and bayonet lug from new or having visited the arsenal.

The earlier versions are worth more. I think the National Postal Meter ones are the rarest if I remember right.

Sweet shooting and accurate.

58 "That's it for this week - have you been to the range?"

Alas, no...in Iowa, we're digging out from multiple days of heavy snow. This is made worse by the fact that yesterday, I bought a new gun!

A Sig P365. I had an old KelTec PF9 for pocket carry, and it worked well, but after shooting a Ruger LC9s Pro, I realized I could get a very similar gun with an infinitely better trigger for a slight increase in cost. The LC9s Pros aren't very common, but the EC9 is even cheaper, and very similar (if you don't mind leaving the manual safety off). The helpful gunshow vendor trotted off and brought the P365 as another alternative, and it's amazing.

Slightly smaller than the LC9, but the grip feels and "grips" much better. Trigger is slightly better (and much better than the PF9). And it holds 10 rounds of 9mm? I don't know how it's physically possible, but it's true. Good night sights, too. Cost $490, which was a little more than I was looking to spend, but knocked a bit off by trading in my PF9. Now, I just need to get to the range!

79 I did get to the range yesterday! And it was good.

I'm not terribly happy with my performance. I was shooting low-right again and that usually means I'm either' pushing ' the gun down to anticipate recoil or I'm not pulling the trigger straight back. I did better with the PPQ45, but that gun is magic...when it's willing to feed rounds...

I also had my first malfunction I can recall with my XD45. I had the slide lock back with rounds in the magazine. It MIGHT have been an issue of bumping the slide lock during firing. I'll do more testing. It also has several thousand rounds through it. It's not impossible the recoil spring needs replacing.

72 I like the M1 carbine. It's light and handy, and more than effective. I think I've told my tale of woe, how it won't reliably feed soft point ammo, which is a shame. It would be a good rifle for the wife. For now, the Kel Tec SU16 is 'her' rifle, by her bedroom door in case I'm not at home and my pup Logan isn't sufficient deterrent.

Agreed. The light weight really helps. It's not quite as erogonomic as a modern AR though. Less muzzle blast and recoil on the M1 Carbine though and that's not nothing.

102 Does anyone else find the wartime production conversion from
automobiles, typewriters, postal meters and juke boxes to rifles
interesting?

"Interesting" is too mild a word for what went on. Union Switch and Signal Co. made the B-29 work...because of one guy, with a lot of experience in, well, railroad signals, who looked at the rat's nest of wires inside the B-29's "avionics" boxes and said, My wife and I could wire this better. And they did.He took the top-secret box home, and bundles the cables.

At the beginning of the war, my dad was working at the Meilink Steel Safe Company. They made fireproof vaults, very good ones. The government shut down their safe production, converted them to making portable field stoves, and converted another company to making safes. People thought that someday, the people responsible for actions like that would be brought to account. People were wrong.

112 My first and, so far, only "that could have ended poorly" gun moment was with an M1 carbine. Shooting down into a ravine at a friend's house at a picnic table on the firing line, we were locking rifles open and keeping them propped against the table when we weren't shooting. I had just finished with the Carbine, dropped the magazine, locked the bolt open with the fiddly little button on the operating handle, and firmly planted the butt onto the ground to prop it against the table... the jolt was enough to pop the bolt lock free, and it slammed shut on an empty chamber, with me staring down into the bore.

If that doesn't make you sit down and start thinking about muzzle discipline, maybe shooting isn't for you.

114 There were a number of M1 carbines rebuilt from demil receivers in the 1960's. This entailed taking receivers that had been cut in two, milling and rewelding them. This usually took two demilled receivers to make one good one. Some worked fine, while others were sketchy. Alpine Arms, a west coast outfit IIRC, was one of the main purveyors of these. They are usually found with a blued receiver, and the rest of the parts surplus parkerized.

Sight in, then inhale and exhale naturally. Notice when where your sights are when you exhale. If you focus on the front sight and fire when the sights settle on the exhale, it might help.

You also might try to brace your support arm against your chest with an 'elbows in' hold?

Sorry if that sounds like obvious advice.

155 Hadn't seen that one - the one with Churchill and the Thompson is more famous, I think.

Weasel, not sure I can be here much tonight, meeting friends for dinner, but another great thread, thanks.

M1 carbines seem to generate more than the usual amount of sketchy or mythological info (on the negative side).

Weasel unless I'm misremembering, the carbine was literally developed as a replacement for the 1911 pistol for some troops, to give them much greater self-defense capacity. So the comparisons (not yours, the ones made by detractors) with full battle rifles are silly. Of course the little M1 doesn't have the range or power of its bigger brothers. Wasn't supposed to.

Might have been last week, mentioned a UToob interview by Gun Jesus of In-Range (Ian) with .... Hackworth? Anyway, good one, about the M1. Ian and a few others seem to have had lots of trouble with the M1 that I've never had, nor encountered from other owner/users.

And Weasel what about the colorful back-story - "Carbine" Williams being paroled from prison (on a murder rap) after designing it (more or less).

WWII production books: one good one I read recently was "Freedom's Forge" (Arthur Herman) - not comprehensive, just a small sip from the fire-hose, framed through the key examples of Bill Knudsen of GM, and Henry Kaiser. Not a lot of detail on small arms production - more about aircraft (where the auto industry approach was a dramatic change from previous aircraft production style).

For the M1 carbine itself, there is "War Baby" - a big expensive book, I think the bible for M1 cultists. A complete industrial and military history (I think - have never ponied up the coin to buy it).

Time for a long distance dedication...

Dear Casey,

A friend of mine has recently undertaken a long-distance relationship. He's had a tough time, much like the beaten up M-1 Carbine I've recently acquired and lovingly restored to full operation. After all that effort, I'm still reluctant to put live rounds through the rifle - I guess you could say I'm as gun-shy as he is.

Still, a rifle that doesn't shoot is like a man without a woman - useless. So on behalf of both of use, can you please play Bill Withers' "Use Me."

163 What should I look for, either in the gun, to be wary of; or in a smith to be knowlegable?

If you have no knowledge of the weapon, I'd go to a couple of local gun ranges and ask them who'd they recommend to scope it out. They aren't going to try and get cute since their business depends on being responsible. With out physically handling the weapon I couldn't make any recommendations as to safety.

166 My 1943 Quality Hardware (Rockola barrel) is totally reliable and fun. Adjustable sights are a bit of a joke, though, on elevation/range. I actually prefer the original peep sights, which are on my Auto Ordnance reproduction M1 (also a flawlessly reliable, fun, easy little gun to shoot).

Reloading for the M1 is also easy - no variations, just the load it was built for (110g FMJ, 14-15g of H110, the current commercial name for the powder I believe actually developed for the round/rifle back then).

Gotta run - but on industrial war history, somebody here linked a website recently - had it, recently lost it in a browser freeze - but should be easy to find. Pretty comprehensive history site on auto industry in the war (I'm going to search "Oldsmobile in WWII" - think that was the page I was on).

Posted by: rhomboid at February 17, 2019 07:43 PM (QDnY+)

Part of the problem with the Carbine's variable reputation is that it was often used in ways that it wasn't designed for, as a front-line rifle for line infantry troops. If memory serves, this was a particular problem during Korea.

When I built my Mauser, I took it to a reputable gun shop with a gunsmith and asked them to check it for weakness. Basically, "Is this gun safe to shoot." He signed off on it, and I took it to the range. Worked fine.

(Of course, the rifling was gone, so now I'm getting it relined, but that's a side issue.)

The Luger uses a toggle-lock, which is quirky and kind of cool. Watch some youtubes on how to cycle it. If yours doesn't work, that's a problem.

Also check the bore. If you can see rifling, be happy.

After the war, Underwood returned to making peacetime office equipment in their same antiquated facilities, while the Italian firm Olivetti, with new factories purchase using Marshall plan funds, competed with them. Eventually, Olivetti won out and Underwood was purchased out of near bankruptcy.

Well, back when I was in the service in the '80s, "officially" the soldier's basic load of ammo was 210 rounds (6 thirty round M16 magazines in ammo pouches, and one in the weapon).

In real life, the soldier would probably carry about 3 times that, partly in loaded magazines in a buttpack or rucksack, partly as boxed ammo to reload your empty magazines.

In addition, each man would generally carry about 200-300 rounds for the platoon's M60 machine guns, which you'd dump by the MG teams when you went into action. Maybe an extra 60mm mortar round, which would also be dumped off by the mortar crews.

It really depended on a lot of factors, starting with what unit he was in and when. An army paratrooper in 1944 would have different kit compared to a Marine in 1942. Remember also that an infantryman might very likely be carrying spare belts for the machine gun or other equipment.

A good resource might be asking reenactors, they tend to research that kind of thing.

And yet here we are happy as could be.

Good luck!

219 "Does anyone else find the wartime production conversion from automobiles, typewriters, postal meters and juke boxes to rifles interesting? "

Then there's the non-wartime production os typewriters by Remington, Colt, and S&W. Add sewing machines by Colt, Remington, Husqvarna, CZ Firearms, and the Singer 1911A1 is considered the Holy Grail of all 1911s.

The metal parts precision necessary for all of them is common to all of them.

220 Anyway, next weekend, bringing in some hammer fired 45's for the Nurse to try out.

I've got a 1911, a CZ97, a Ruger P90...and I think that's it for hammer-fired 45's.

We'll see if any of them can dethrone the XD45.

221 Alas, the cylinder was shaved. I'm looking at
workarounds and there seems to be consensus that if you can modify a
full-moon clip to take .455 it will work fine. Already know not to put
.45 ACP through it, though I will be able to use the .45 ACP snap caps.

If you reload, use .455 hollow base bullets. It is what it was designed for, and the bullet skirt upsetting into the grooves will make it much more accurate and fun to shoot.

226 It really depended on a lot of factors, starting
with what unit he was in and when. An army paratrooper in 1944 would
have different kit compared to a Marine in 1942. Remember also that an
infantryman might very likely be carrying spare belts for the machine
gun or other equipment.

A good resource might be asking reenactors, they tend to research that kind of thing.

And at ISC, one can shoot rifles up to 100 yards. Not bad for a range in the middle of what is today expensive suburbs.

249 > have you been to the range?
Yes!

I got a *scope* for my RS22. Installed it a couple of days ago and was waiting for a not-windy day to sight it.

I completely lucked out. Somebody else at the range let me borrow his lead sled and that made it So Much Easier.

I might have screwed up the scope installation. (Bushnell 613510A 3.5-10x36mm). I had to turn over *50* up clicks until I got the elevation right. Windage was only a little off. But, after the click festival, it was shooting where I aimed it.

Pounded a target at 50 yards pretty good. Then I had to give the Lead Sled back and tried my steel swingers. I usually set those up a 20 yards. At that range I hit the swingers about half the time. With the scope I set the swingers at 25 yards and scored 28 out of 30 hits!!
I tried shooting while standing. Hit about half the time - I was hitting those less than 25% of time while standing using the standard RS22 fiber optics.

So the scope is working out pretty well! Nice and clear. Got it for $66 on Amazon and there's 20% rebate coming back on top of that.

And a nice steaming pile of shit it is, too. There's REASONS that Marlin dropped the Camp line of carbines, no matter how much fun they were to shoot.

Mine underwent a spontaneous unscrewing of the barrel from the receiver, in the midst of a rather rapid string of fire in a Three Gun match.

Incompetent local gunsmith buggered the repair, to the degree that even Marlin said could not be overcome.

But, what did I find inside the action when I took it down to bits to sell parts at salvage?

Way too much of the internals were made of solvent-sensitive plastics...and these, in high-wear areas where metal-on-metal was called for, and hardened steel, not softer alloys.

Hi-Point makes a far more reliable, if yes, far uglier .45 ACP carbine.

You got a nice Camp 45? Cool. Let it appreciate there in the safe, and don't risk it's self-destruction at the range.

317 The only story about industrial change over to the M1 Carbine came from my late aunt. She was a secretary at the War Department during WW II. Underwood typewriters were the norm in those offices and as time went by maintenance became an ever greater problem. A cache of worn out machines were stockpiled to be picked over for parts as needed.

Those typewriters were sturdy, very well made and carefully maintained but the constant use took its toll. Also, then as now, the Pentagon ran on paper and typerwriters that were down could mean a delay in orders, requisitions, and other matters needed to prosecute the war. It was a serious problem. She said a request went out to the country for any typewriters people were willing to donate to the war effort.

was meant seriously. were you clearing a room with a machine gun with some ridiculously high rate of fire and very low recoil that might be useful. you might not kill everyone but were your rate of fire high enough and mag deep enough, raking the room and inserting 5 rounds of .22lr into everyone would slow them down enough to let the guys behind you finish for you.

That's a good sign. I'd just take it to a gunsmith and have them look it over if you're worried.

9mm is not a particularly "hot" round, and modern firearms rarely blow up from factory ammo.

But without seeing it and handling it, I'd say drop it off, pay the bench fee and leave it at that.

Alternatively, take it to a show and find someone selling Lugers. They are usually quite talkative and knowledgeable.

455 Back in the day I picked up an M1 carbine manufactured by Israeli Armament Industries (IAI). Can't remember who the importer was. They manufactured a new receiver and used a mixture of old and new GI parts - mine had a flat bolt and early rear sight, but late model safety. Very nice shooter. The only thing I disliked was the crappy wood (beech?) of the stock.

Later I got a late WWII model from CMP that had apparently been used by the Bavarian Polizei after the war. Lo and behold, it had a crappy beechwood stock, too! Luckily surplus stocks aren't too expensive.

Got to my backyard range yesterday and today, since weather was fine. Shot a Browning Hi-Power, and a truly delightful Marlin 1894 in .38 Special/.357 Magnum. 16.5 inch barrel, very handy and very low recoil shooting the cheaper .38 Spc.

O/T, confirmed, much as I could, my uncle was on the Helena when she was sunk.

That man went through a lot. He was on a ship that was sunk out from under him, reassigned to the Helena, was at Pearl Harbor and then had the dubious honor of having another ship sunk out from underneath him.

Yet, even though I spent a fair amount of time around my uncle growing up, he never talked about his experiences.

And, according to mom, who obviously knew him much longer than I did, my uncle never talked about what he went through.

Luger people are quite common and they get deep into the weeds.

Plus, 9mm is cheap and not too hard on the gun, so if it checks out, you don't have to worry about stressing the mechanism.

But if you do, parts are not that hard to come by. You've got a real treasure. Enjoy it.

473 I own two .30 Carbines. One is genuine mil-issue with folding stock that I bought for about $150 back in the mid-1980s. The other is a Plainfield made around 1970-72; found that one on Gunbroker last year.

Yeah, the mil-issue carbines are going for crazy money now. The .30 Carbine is plenty of fun to shoot: nice handling and little felt recoil. My brother had a "Jungle Carbine" back in the 1980s -- I don't remember how it recoiled but we didn't shoot it much.

487 Let me put a word in for a product that really delivers what it promises. Evapo-Rust. I've used it for a while and it really does remove by just soaking.

I put the Dead Man's Model 10 into a bath of it today for a hour after I disassembled it and discovered that the inside was as rusty as the outside. It removed all the rust, and the remaining bluing, but somehow it draws the carbon up to the surface so you end up with a dark gun metal gray finish that will still take oil rather than a shiny in-the-white finish.

I may or may not reblue this pistol.

wasn't to enamored with the carbine. Just not the stopping power they
wanted in combat.

Great series, Sergeant Major.
I met some 4th ID Normandy Vets in 1994 at Ft Dix. They also disliked the carbine. They said by the time they reached the Huertgen Forrest, most of their platoon had scrounged BARs, and they used them to great effect on assaults.

You bet. Be careful overpaying for super-duper ammo at premium prices. Unless a load is tuned to a specific rifle, and each one is different, you're likely not going to get what you paid for. Good luck!

I took a date to a shooting range once. It was a lot of fun; we got along just fine. Until. She got that look in her eye, you know? Just knew what she wanted and couldn't be talked out of it; she was going home with it that night. Anyway, long story short, I tried, but I couldn't win the teddy bear and I ran out of tickets. And just like that, she walked out of my life forever. Last I saw was the back side of her as she walked towards the tilt-a-whirl, holding hands with a toothless carny who looked like he used thirty-weight shampoo. A "pit boob", I think. Some job like that.

Anyway, the funnel cakes were pretty good.

571 I can already tell you, the magazines so far are REALLY tough to load. I've done a lot of shooting with all sorts of firearms, and these magazines are by far the toughest to load I've ever dealt with. Hopefully it'll loosen up with some use. If not, it's not a huge deal...things will have gone terribly wrong if I'm frequently reloading my small concealed carry gun and not my range gun.
Posted by: Grimaldi at February 17, 2019 07:36 PM

This is frequently encountered. The 12 rounders can be a bugger getting #12 in. If you load them up and let them sit a week or two a couple of times, that seems to help. Many people use a loader to assist.
