Solutions Update

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20190216 - Problem 1.jpg
4b1rk/6rp/4p3/1p1pPp2/3NnP2/P1P2B1R/1P5P/3R1K2 b - - 0 1

1...Rg1+
2.Ke2 Rxd1
3.Kxd1 (or 3.Ke3, which gives up the rook outright)
3... Nf2+
4.Kd2 Nxh3 0-1

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190216 - Problem 2.jpg
r2q1rk1/1pp1n1p1/1b1p1p2/1B1N2BQ/p2pP3/PnP3P1/1P3P2/1R4K1 w - - 0 1

1.Nxf6+ looks tempting, especially after 1...Rxf6 2.Bc4+ (hoping for 2...Kf8 3.Qh8+
Ng8 4.Qxg8+ Ke7 5.Qxg7+ Ke8 6.Qh8+ Ke7 7.Qxf6+ Kd7 8.Qf5+ Kc6 9.Qb5#), but Black can spoil the party with 2...e5 3.exd5 Rf5 and now White is two pieces down and nowhere to go.

The better move is 1.Bc4!, which really ties Black up. Now there are basically 4 lines, all of which lead to mate in, at the most, 4 moves:

#1:
1...Rf7
2.Nxf6+ gxf6
3.Qxf7+ Kh8
4. Bxf6#

#2:
1... fxg5
2.Nxe7#

#3:
1...g6
2.Nxe7+ Kg7
3.Qh6#

#4:
1...Nxd5
2.Bxd5+ Rf7
3.Qxf7+ Kh8 (3...Kh7 4.Qh5#)
4.Qh5#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

It's in Yakima, because we wanted to make it a central location to maximize the opportunity for everyone. And in May, a better chance of not getting rained on, compared to if it was on the wet side.

Aniline dyes were first invented at the end of the 1850s and became quite popular. The inventor, a patrotic Frenchman, named two of the colors after the recent victories at Magenta and Solferino.

131 Greetings:

Long before my deportation to the San Francisco Bay area, I was the beneficiary of six years of grammar school classical piano lessons which shaped my musical preference for longer-form instrumental music.

Luckily, there's a classical music radio station, KDFC, in the area that I listen to a good bit of. It is a station of its time and place. Around midday, the woman announcer takes requests from her audience members. After hearing their sly progressive innuendos and insertions for many years, I concluded that I had earned myself a bit of fun.

So, off to their website I go wherein I located the "make a request" form wherein I type my request, to wit: "My masculinity is in need of a giddy-up. So please cut the theme from "The Magnificent Seven" out of your musical corral and let it go for a good long gallop."

( N.B. This took a substantial bit of effort because I don't keystroke well and it's even worse when I'm a-giggling.)

So, a couple of days later I get back home from a bit of exercise just in time to hear my request being announced. But as we probably all know, Progressives are all the time progressiving, so the "My masculinity is in need of a giddy-up" part of my request ended up on the microphone room floor probably due to time constraints or maybe ideological ones or maybe both.

Who really knows ???

I know Ace is taking a well-deserved weekend off, but I hope he is able to get involved with the Amazon referral program. It would be a steady source of revenue, assuming us Morons go to AoS first before clicking through to Amazon and buying stuff.

Yes, but change the tag to something else and see what happens. It doesn't say anywhere on the page that anyone's getting an affiliate fee whether you include a tag, don't include one, or just make one up. By itself, the tag doesn't show that there's payment on the other side like AltonJackson said.

363 Don't know if one can ever know who is behind the attack/ complaints. Rush as well as lots of conservatives have had this go on, the short of Rush's that he uncovered its a miniscule few who create a big footprint of complaints so it looks like a big organization. 408 Hi Hogmartin,
Things are same old. Work and then to mom's to help with her care. Husband is better and back to work. (Not sure if I mentioned about that to you in email- but one of the reasons 'my life is insanity').

I'm here a lot, but usually just lurking. (Can't comment from work). Lately I've been here when i get up for work at abt 1/4 to dark. Skip and I exchange breakfast ideas.
On weekends when I'm here at mom's, I am often up all nite if she is restless, i try to keep up with the ONT. You all comment so fast! My fingers on my phone are too slow.

I saw that you got to the NoVaMoMe. So cool!

409 #NEW on @OANN: Chicago police believe Jussie Smollett paid 2 men to orchestrate his alleged assault. Records show 2 brothers being questioned purchased the rope found around Smollett's neck at an Ace Hardware store in Chicago. They are now cooperating with investigators.

410 I seem to recall that you mentioned your husband, but now that I look at the email archives, I can't seem to find it. Maybe you mentioned it here on the site?

I hope you'll be able to come to one of the MoMes. We've done a few out here in southeast Michigan, but that would be a bit of a drive for you. I'll be sure to keep you on the list though - we'd love it if you could come out or even organize one over where you are. There are quite a few commenters in the area. The NoVAMoMe was absolutely fun on a bun and I'm really glad I was lucky enough to get out there for it.

411 One morning someone from my area mentioned that we should meet at Miller park this summer (brewer's stadium recently was renamed- cant remember right now to what). It could be a fun venue. He mentioned using the restaurant inside, but a tailgate event could be some very
cheese-head-y fun!

Husband was in a car accident last summer, caused by a seizure, caused by a -get this- baseball sized brain tumor (that was previously unknown!). Non-cancerous. Surgery, lots of therapy appts, mandatory no driving for 3 months (he's a truck driver) so no working either. That was.....insane.
He's fully recovered and driving again. Yay!

I'm still hoping to make a trip to grand rapids to visit friends, if i do i will shoot you an email. And if a mome happens here, you should come! Are there prizes for morons and 'ettes that go to more than one in a year? Hah.

Attending even one in a year is its own prize.

415 I didn't see Bc4 as the first move in Problem 2. I was busy looking at Nxf6 and Nxe7 and couldn't find a mate.

419 Curious setup. The fighterpawns are aligned almost like sittuyin (Burmese chess), but backwards (the pawns on their owner's right should be the forward ones). But the pieces are in their Western positions (in sittuyin, you arrange them any way you like behind your pawns). Bottom line, it's a legally reachable position (modulo the mirroring) in either game, but only by players who aren't trying too hard to win.

And agree that the dark side's knights and rooks are too hard to tell apart. Perhaps the rooks should have been capital ships (the Millennium Falcon v. a Star Destroyer or Death Star.)
