Iran's Future? Pretty Grim, If These Kids Are Anything Close To Typical

Forty years of insane, all-encompassing indoctrination into a particularly virulent strain of Islam, coupled with the seemingly natural predilection of Muslims for Jew-hate, and you get a twisted and deeply damaged society.

Imagine a Persia left to its own rather impressive qualities without the malign influence of Shia Islam, or for that matter any fundamentalist strain. They did well under the Shah (don't believe the media's twisting of the truth) who, for all of his flaws tried to modernize Iran. That the Shia mullahs saw modernization as an existential threat to their power speaks volumes about their motives.

So now the primary focus of Iran is its pursuit of nuclear weapons and support for terrorism across the world, with the ultimate goal the destruction of Israel (Little Satan) and America (Great Satan).

HRCWNBPOTUS is particularly pleasing in this light, since an Iran unconstrained by President Trump's reversal of the Iran Deal is a disturbing thing.

2 Iran could be a great country. Maybe not as great as it was when their leader was 12' tall, and had trained rhinos and such in his army, but still great.

Dumb ass ... Nationalism is the notion that Nation States should conduct their policy for the benefit of their own Citizens. Socialism is the idea that there are no Citizens - only those who benefit the State.

National Socialism is that marriage of the idea that everyone prop up their own Nation State, which in turn goes out and devours all the inferior Nation States, so that their own serfs can have more material with which to benefit the State.

We need a new term ... Globalist Socialists. Because Mads is just pissed at the notion of Serfs slaving away for a Nation, instead of the World.

yeah, but just "globalists" is good, they are not social, they are tyrannical. Communism is also a false label ... they are never about community, except about top down iron-fisted control of every community, under one central command.

"Nationalism" is a pretty good term, for the western sovereign nations, when it means the central authority is to serve the nation (people), especially in a representative democracy.

But for US I still prefer Americanism, a unique form of nationalism, with a bill of rights that demands the leaders serve the public. The sovereign individual is unique to America, afaik. There are of course civic duties and laws, formatting all sorts of things .. but those (ideally) fall under protection of individual rights.

Jean Kirkpatrick was wrong - wrong on first premises.

She saw value in such an organization as the UN. I listened to her defend the premise many, many times.

We should not be in the UN. We should not encourage such an organization. We certainly shouldn't host it.

Disagree. The reason I remember her so fondly is her deft verbal disembowelment of petty dictators and Commies. You would never have seen it if we weren't in the UN. I'm happy to have us in if that's what we're doing, while telling them to get bent when they come around asking for more money.

88 Iran today truly is the equivalent socially of Hitler's Germany, about 1937. Fortunately their economy and military are much weaker, from a relative standpoint.

The good thing for us (bad for them) is that when societies of this kind finally face a true defeat, they shatter completely.

89 Persia seems like a cautionary tale. They were a great world power, then they must have gotten fat and lazy, perhaps with a good dose self loathing for the 7th century death cult arabs to be able to conquer them. And then the crafty Persians decided that they would fare better to infiltrate the power system of the new rulers rather than try to overthrow them. And many hundreds of years later their descendants are still mired in rule by the death cult

True, but it happens sometimes. Witness the USSR or Romania. Hell, it's happening now in Venezuela. I expect Iran will be more difficult than Venezuela, but I think it will happen eventually.

In fairness, that was Paul Volcker's doing, not Carter's, who was very unhappy about it.

Still, Volcker's move was the right one, as it wrung out inflationary expectations across the economy, and showed that the US had the balls to endure the pain of crushing inflation. That meant we could borrow money at much more reasonable interest rates, which in turn led to the boom under Reagan.

Think of those sky-high interest rates as setting a broken leg. Painful, but necessary.

157 It strikes me that the UN has become the modern day version of the Holy Roman Empire. It continued for centuries after it had lost all real power, with envoys from all nations coming to court it, but all it did for the last couple centuries of its existence was to have parties in Vienna for aristocrats. Amazingly, it lasted until Napoleon, who saw that he didn't have the time or patience for that nonsense, so he simply abolished it.

Napoleon wasn't all bad.

Think of those sky-high interest rates as setting a broken leg. Painful, but necessary.

My Dad still speaks of Volcker in Glowing Terms. When we moved in 1980, he hated the interest rates, but he kept saying that, "It had to be done".

He was the head of a Credit Union at General Electric for twenty years. ...Voluntarily.

It wasn't until 1990 that I started to grasp the Economic Picture in these Great United States of America.

It wasn't until 2000 that I started to understand that the Head of the Federal Reserve wasn't a Groundhog that came out and said: "Six More Months of Higher Interest Rates".

It wasn't until 2005 before I understood the National Debt in its immense entirety.

It takes some of us a Long Time to grasp the precipice upon which we teeter.

Fast forward to the 12:50 mark -- the first commercial break after the intro and the news with Frank Blair -- and you'll see a commercial for "Watergate -- THE place to live in Washington... near everything important... with everything you need." Lots of pictures of smiling women in bikinis around the pool, suits dining in the fancy restaurant, cocktail parties, etc. Prices for apartments began at "under $40,000".

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at February 17, 2019 01:51 PM (13CQC)

Dan wasn't saying the Shah was the horror. His point was the US meddling in the savage's way of life was the horror.

The Shah was a pussy cat compared to the horror in Tehran today.

President Carter cut off all military aid to him due to "human rights" abuses which left him weak and vulnerable. Carter wouldn't know a "human right" if it was shoved up his squeak hole.

That is the real horror.

66 40 ... eeyore, I've read most of the pieces in "Present Concerns". Each one is prescient to say the least. Did Lewis feel the same rage I do at seeing the deliberate, arrogant and ignorant destruction of what's good? Did his faith sustain him?

Perhaps it's time to read the Narnia books. Maybe they will give me a hint at what sustained Lewis.

JTB, if you're around, by all means read the Narnia books, but Lewis's science fiction trilogy will more directly give you the answer you're looking for.
(Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength)
The third one actually shows his imagining of what a city taken over by bureaucrats and their beetle-browed enforcers would look like. You have to read the first two to really get the context, though.

I've thought that, too.

No golf or tennis. Just a quiet beach, a book and plenty of beer.

390 Hey, that story about the mass shooting that killed a lot of people in Aurora, IL, where did that story go?

Killer was a black ex-felon, people he killed were white.

Where did the story go?

Where's our national conversation?

The best move was to shut our damn mouths ... because the human rights abuses have to happen with certain groups of humans.

393 379 As a single female working in the airline business in the '70's and '80's I chased all over the world...usually by myself. You could not pay me enough money to get me to leave the States now. I don't feel all that safe here but there's no way I'd tempt the Fates by crossing our border.
Posted by: creeper at February 17, 2019 02:32 PM (RnzeK)

I used to fly Braniff 1st class from Dallas to London like 5 times a year in the 70's. That was when first class meant something.

394 Carter wanted the Shah gone because Pahlavi was a
behind-the-scenes supporter of Israel and therefore a threat to Jim's P.L.O. buddies (who were also Commie funded stooges, directly and indirectly by Egypt and Russia).

I just figured he was protecting his shutout of never getting anything right.

=====

You're right there, wrong choice of words on my part. Not "democratic" but "civilized" maybe? Fristance, I'm a fan of the Saudi royal family, Islam and all. That place would turn into a powder keg overnight if they started voting instead of letting the al-Sauds make decisions.

397 Stupid cash for clunkers hammered the affordability of used cars for many Americans. Which was the plan of course....because TRAINS!
Posted by: Guy Mohawk at February 17, 2019 02:30 PM (r+sAi)

Fact.
I can attest to this because i was in the business.
Took millions of affordable, reliable (if a bit worn) automobiles and light trucks and massacred them and in the process priced millions of working Americans out of the used car market, forced many small businessmen out of business., and jacked up the price of used parts....

We didn't forget. GWB changed the language and the focus. (Alinsky)

we shall never surrender

402 Lived in South America for several years and still go back to visit with my wife. I never had any trouble but I had/have my eyes wide open and am not prone to pretend the locals are all good, noble people. Some are but there were a lot of savage criminals as well and both groups look and act same and want to get get to know you. Try to blend in and don't walk around with a bandana and a back pack and expensive electronics. Oh, and don't wear the indigenous clothes sold to tourists. It marks you as a naive idiot for the criminals.

he was big on recognizing the vast corruption in DC. Until proof otherwise, I'll believe he was murdered by DeepState ... heart attack gun or whatever. Not that I heard that ... but seems about right, considering their ongoing coup, and intent to destroy challengers to their power.

------------------------------
Our sole interest was to keep Iran out of the Soviet orbit.
The USSR was heavily invested in getting Iran.

We should have supported the Shah more thoroughly at the BEGINNING of his regime.

Eisenhower was smart enough to join the British in removing Mossadegh, a Stalinist tool, and installing the only plausible alternative.
But the US --- under the influence of the socialist DoS --- did not understand the necessity of ruthlessly destroying all of the Stalinist networks.

They especially balked at Pinocheting the foreign networks. (What do you think people like Valerie Jarrett's parents were really doing in Iran?)
And, more understandably, they balked at destroying the crazy religious networks, despite knowing that they were funded by the USSR.

They thought that economic development and modernization would win the day. Yeah, right.

In any case, it is a delusion to believe that American power can determine events so easily. The best of policy is guesswork and may backfire. So much is beyond our control.

406 It's not as if the Shah was a new kid on the block.

The brainwashing of an entire generation via the schools sounds very similar to me.

Happening on the Daily Stormer and similar places, and nowhere else.

There's a selection effect at work there, and not the one the mainstream wants.
