If socialism is good why are people fleeing from it? Ask 100 people to define socialism, you would likely get 100 different answers. It reminds me of the story about blind people in a zoo touching an elephant for the first time. Each person has a different perception, depending on where they touch. On one end you receive free food, healthcare, and daily treats. Who wouldn’t want free stuff? Those on the “bouquet” end, dealing with the mess, would have a different opinion. If socialism is so good, one would think people would be migrating to the states offering the most free stuff. The major moving companies issue annual reports regarding migration. How to spot a hoax. Well, one kind of hoax, anyway. I'm not a general hoax expert. When the story is just too perfect, when it fits the stereotype that the perpetrator wants to believe, that's a big clue. Lots of people wanted it to be true that high school boys wearing MAGA hats were saying racist things and even looking a little violent and out of control. So a Native American says "I thought they were going to lynch those black people." Really? You thought those 16-year-olds were going to pull out some rope and wade into a group of black adults, and start dragging them out one-by-one, looking for a tree branch or a light pole? But it would just be so cool if they were like that. I'll be they would be like that if they only had the chance. It's not too far-fetched that they could conceivably do that... Over the last two decades, the Earth has seen an increase in foliage around the planet, measured in average leaf area per year on plants and trees. Data from NASA satellites shows that China and India are leading the increase in greening on land. The effect stems mainly from ambitious tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture in both countries. Just what Americans need: A new social contract for America. German Chancellor Angela Merkel won thunderous applause at the Munich Security Conference today with globalist comments supporting retaining the ‘Iran Deal’ put together by the Obama administration and for suggesting the United States keep its troops in Syria. The hypocrisy was astounding as the globalist elites in Europe called for America to continue to send its men and women into harms way as Germany cedes its energy security to Moscow with construction of the Nord Stream II pipeline and spends little on its own defense. European support for the ‘Iran Deal’ stems from its desire to reap financial profits from Tehran’s government and caring little about Iran’s export of terror and its often stated desire to destroy the Jewish State. If I were POTUS for 48 hours, I would be out of NATO, the UN and Syria so fast....... A Canadian youth hockey team forfeited the rest of its season this week following social media backlash and death threats after a video surfaced of players dancing to music from an indigenous electronic group led to accusations they were mocking indigenous culture. An uproar ensued last month when a video showing players dancing to the song "Electric Pow Wow Drum" by electronic group A Tribe Called Red made the rounds on social media. Hey everybody.
Welp, I got myself a Roku Premiere. Hooked it up today and signed up for a number of services, including Sling TV. Good news: I personally like it. Live TV channels are available via the services from CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox. Lots of other live-steaming channels available via Sling. Bad news: numerous other channels, such as PBS and CW, *only* offer shows in individual episodes, with no live streaming available. Also, you can't channel-surf on a Roku *except* within Sling and another (weird) service called Pluto TV, which contains very few mainstream channels. (Pluto TV *does* have NewsmaxTV, interestingly enough.) Sling offers my local NBC and Fox channels in live streaming, but not CBS, ABC, CW or PBS. Anyway. I crunched the numbers and if we stick with the Roku, at least my family can save about $85 a month on cable. (CBS All Access is $5.99 a month and the Sling package I chose, with extras, is $40 a month.) Thinking it would be worth it to just spend another $60, get a digital antenna and bribe one of my BILs to instal it on the roof. At least then me and my mom could channel-surf through the old fashioned live network channels, as well as Sling. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 17, 2019 09:46 PM (miE9U) 52

-------- If the fashion industry were rational, most big designers would be straight. But they're rare in general, and they're practically non-existent in haute couture. These guys mostly just design to make women as attractive as possible. If the guy doing that is gay, then he's designing based on what a gay man sees as attractive in a woman. So RBG allegedly attended a Supreme Court private conference on Friday (no pictures of course), and will allegedly be present for oral arguments on Tuesday (just sixty minutes).
It's weird - given her return to the Court on Friday, you'd think that there would be a picture released of Ginsburg smiling with the other justices. Just an oversight, I guess. Any bets that she will actually show up in public on Tuesday? Or is she going to have a "temporary relapse" that will prevent her from attending? If she doesn't show up, there really needs to be an investigation - for example, did she really show up on Friday, or is Roberts and the Court administration lying through their teeth about the state of her health. Anyway. I crunched the numbers and if we stick with the Roku, at least my family can save about $85 a month on cable. (CBS All Access is $5.99 a month and the Sling package I chose, with extras, is $40 a month.)
Thinking it would be worth it to just spend another $60, get a digital antenna and bribe one of my BILs to instal it on the roof. At least then me and my mom could channel-surf through the old fashioned live network channels, as well as Sling. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 17, 2019 09:46 PM (miE9U) Today, I found out that Spectrum (Comcast) disappeared the EPIX channels from our service. I called them and, after waiting 25 minutes on hold, I was told that Spectrum made those channels ala carte. I asked the guy why should I pay the same amount for fewer channels. He was speechless. I then began ranting about how wonderful it is dealing with a frigging monopoly, wished him well and hung up. We are paying way too much for the privilege of being screwed to death. Roku, Chromecast or Firestick here we come even after subscribing to multiple services we'll save a ton. Enough is enough. Posted by: DR.WTF at February 17, 2019 09:58 PM (aS1PU) 101

so how does this fit with they have models that are skinny because they like boys?
It's perfectly straightforward. They need to sell clothes to women, so the model has to be female. But their personal taste runs to boys, so they choose the most boyish women they can find. I'm not sure why this is a difficult concept. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at F why not apply occam's razor? skinny models, which resemble mannequins, are best for showcasing the clothing. no one thinks they are not largely gay but including that in the modeling selection does not make sense. why don't straight designers choose male models that look like women? I'm halfway through Part 5 of the BBC series, and I don't see any parallels to present-day America. Am I missing something?
- The way I see it, the similarity concerns the increasing polarization of the country caused, as I see it, by the increasingly radical policies of the left as they chase, but can never catch, the dragon of utopia which in turn causes the violent collapse of government and society. If I recall correctly, the fifth episode is about anarchists in Barcelona and Catalonia generally abolishing money, abolishing marriage and a bunch of other screwball; i.e., Seattle-like, crap at least until they were put up against the wall by the commies. Also, the basic denial of reality by the Republicans as, for instance, their militia troops would not obey orders unless the unit voted and approved the orders. Meanwhile, Franco is creeping ever closer. Generally, the similarity is in our attempt to achieve our goals by using lawful, liberal democratic means such as voting and being frustrated by violent, unlawful, dishonest methods of our opponents which, I fear, may lead to a collapse of our system and a resort to war. If that occuts, then we'll see the abolition of money and other unicorn fart utopian disasters. Payne's book covers this in much more detail and is not as left leaning as the series. Because they are trying to sell clothes to women, so the model needs to be female.
Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 17, 2019 10:05 PM (0OWcv) ---- This is the problem. The whole industry is too gay to make a nice product for ladies, and the men who admire them. Gay men design the clothes, and then urban women who will never wear them promote them in fashion magazines whose photographers and bookers are gay. They model the gay clothes on boyish models, and regular women see this and complain that they can never be so thin and narrow, and blame straight men for their unrealistic body image. Straight men don't want you look like a gay little boy. We don't you to dress like one, either. I have a small story about the "Sky is Falling" post above confirming it; I grew up in Western PA. Fairly rural for the most part. Strip mining is part of the landscape though. My Dad grew up somewhere between No and Where in a tiny little nothing town called Plain Grove. They started stripmining that area in the late 50s. It was active until the early 80s or so. It closed. The State of PA demanded the company fix the land. The company went all "uh,,we got bought out. talk to the new owners". There weren't any new owners. Anyway, it went into litigation hell and the land just went unused and ignored for 30+ years. A funny thing happened while the lawyers made bucks through litigation. That barren, stripped mined, damaged land started being taken over by nature. First were the weeds, then bushes, then trees, and now? You drive up in that area and it looks like nothing ever happened there. Basically, once man stopped messing with the land, it all came back anyway. I have a friend that hunts up there. The earth is much more resilient than most people think.

Women who can afford to buy haute couture have always worked hard to remain skinny. They have pillows embroidered with sayings like "You can never to be too rich or too thin" and "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" This is nothing new. Runway clothes are hideous now compared to the classic days of the 40s and 50s (when designers were no less gay, I'm sure), but thin has always been a thing in contemporary times. Now, the freak nowadays can't be compared to the likes of Dior, Givenchy, Valentino, etc in their heyday, that's for sure, and the 60s saw it get exaggerated. Ballet is another industry where women are skinny as fuck. Ice skaters, gymnasts, most are probably anorexic. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at February 17, 2019 10:58 PM (yrZmO) 325

Ballet is another industry where women are skinny as fuck. Ice skaters, gymnasts, most are probably anorexic.
My sister and I went to see The Nutcracker ballet this past Christmas. It was at Warner Theater in DC and the DC Ballet troupe were the cast. I didn't see any anorexic types dancing around on stage. It is far better to own your own cable modem and router. I upgraded my modem to a DOCSIS 3.0 one a few months ago, so I could do IP6 and take advantage of the 200Mbps download speeds and 20Mbps upload. My old DOCSIS 2.0 modem was grandfathered in, but was only capable of 30Mbps download, and couldn't do IP6 -- well, the system wouldn't provision it for IPv6. When you own your own router, you can run custom firmware and all that and get a lot of complex functionality. I've got a Linkys WRT 3200ACM running the OpenWRT 18.06 firmware, and with that, it's as functional as a real router as opposed to the consumer grade stuff. Now one caveat with the modems is if you get voice, phone over Internet, many ISPs make you rent their modem. That's the way Charter/Spectrum is here. A warning to Android users. Last night (during a wedding), my Google Pixel bricked itself. It would not turn off, kept restarting, but would not perform any phone functions as it kept giving me an "application processing error" anytime I tried to do anything with it. No apps would work, no phone, text or web service possible. A total nightmare at a really bad time.
Turns out that there are bad apps you can install. In this case, it was the Kayak travel app, the only new app I had on it. I had just installed it Friday to track incoming wedding guests flights. Since it would not do cell data, I had to boot it into safe mode and connect to wireless service to get to the play store to uninstall it. It is fine now, but what a freaking ordeal. I was watching some show on accents and why the American accent is so much different now than the English of the 18th century was being discussed and one of those accent guys kinda flipped the tables on the whole thing. He claimed our American accent is probably much closer to how English was spoken back then compared to how the English speak now, that their current accent is the one that has changed the most over the last 200 years. He used the Tangier Island dialect as an example, while it does sound different from most American accents, it doesn't sound anything like the current English accent.

I think that was the point he was trying to make, we all just assume it was our accent that changed the most but if we could travel back in time to say the founding of our country, the English spoken then, even by the English, would sound much more like we sound now than what's heard in modern England. The group Dä Traditionsverein organized the event in Lauchringen, Germany on Saturday near the border with Switzerland. They had strict rules: in order to be counted, participants couldn't show any non-blue skin. They could dress as Papa Smurf — with his trademark red cap and a white beard — or Smurfette, with blonde hair and a white skirt or dress. Normal smurfs were OK, too — but some characters, like the evil wizard Gargamel, were strictly off limits. The group posted on Facebook that 2,762 Smurfs showed up. Brit actors can do Southern accents very well. Many Hollywood attempts at it are a joke, but I've heard Brits who could do them flawlessly. One such actress was a guest on Jay Leno many moons ago and demonstrated. She could do a Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, etc, getting the differences just right. An example of "Old Southern" or something that derives from it is the Charleston (S.C) and Savannah accents. They used to have a very different accent that didn't sound Southern at all. The reason was back in Colonial days these were the port towns which maintained much closer ties with the British tongue. The Charleston accent is dying out and is blending in with the surroundings now. To get a classic, non-corrupted example, you need very old speakers. The non-rhotic Southern accents are also disappearing. R dropping will be gone after a few generations. The various dialects present in 19th century America reflected the regions of England where most English speaking residents originated from. But the Devil's Backbone is a good ride. My wife still hasn't forgiven me for taking her down the Salt River Canyon in Arizona, starting at Roosevelt Dam. It's not just that it's still a gravel road, or that it's one lane most of the way (if you meet someone coming the other way, somebody has got to back up a long ways) No, the worst part is that for most of the way, the only thing between the your car door and a 200 foot steep vertical drop is a little 18" gravel berm. And the roads narrow enough that the person sitting in the passenger seat, if you 're going downstream, can see straight down that 200 foot drop the whole time. Elijah Woods best role is The War. I don't know what region of accent he was doing , but it seemed damn good for a kid to be doing. Also is there anyone here from West Virginia because I need to know if that was the worst accent ever by Jodi Foster in Silence of the Lambs. It was very distracting to me it seemed so put on. so, who here thinks it is a good thing to warm your car up when it is very cold our for a few mins.
.... I think it's a great thing. But unfortunately I'm always so far behind that I'm usually trying to look through the tiny sliver of windshield that is actually defrosted or have my head hanging outside the window with a cigarette dangling out of my mouth and a cup of coffee in my hand trying not to spill it as I head down the driveway hoping I'm not late for work. I think the highest point I have ever been is a dormant volcano in Tenerife (Canary Islands). The peak was 12,000 ft more or less but the viewing area was below that. Took one of those sheltered lifts to get to the top so I wasn't climbing it. Don't remember much detail wise. It was a while ago (30 years?). I do remember it was WAY above the cloud layer, I had trouble breathing, and I was REALLY hung over. I probably shouldn't have drunk so much the night before. Booze was cheap on the Canary Islands.

Hope all's well with y'all. Perhaps I'll read upthread, and perhaps even the contents. Or perhaps not. Just bought tix for Average Wife and me to see Mark Knopfler in Santa Barbara in September. The show's nearly sold out so I had to get two seats separated by four seats. Hopefully I'll be able to convince the interfering foursome to shift over one seat so AW and I won't have to yell back and fourth to each other. Anyway, stoked. Was not a huge concert-goer in my youth so this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one of my favorite musicians. Judging from recent vids, Knopfler's still got it. There are a bunch of sites that cater to vintage gear enthusiasts. Also some pretty big Taper Forums. There's a Tascam Broadcast Deck FS over in Eastern WA that I want to buy...one of my dream decks. Those last 2 years of production, when HX-Pro and DBS were available in a 3-Head unit are the ones to own. Sony, Technics, Phillips, Aiwa and Nak all made decks with those features. You want a nice, simple deck? I have a bunch of them around. No 3-Head DBX units. But I have more than a couple nice 2-Heads that you can have for the cost of shipping and the repair tag (usually 45-55). Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, maybe even a Denon or two? A Canadian youth hockey team forfeited the rest of its season this week following social media backlash and death threats after a video surfaced of players dancing to music from an indigenous electronic group led to accusations they were mocking indigenous culture.
An uproar ensued last month when a video showing players dancing to the song "Electric Pow Wow Drum" by electronic group A Tribe Called Red made the rounds on social media. AKAI 10 inch reel to reel, auto reverse towers, FTW.
The high end AKAI cassette decks were the bomb, too. I had a bench-matched pair of single cassette drive decks, as "dual-drive" systems were pretty much "pro-sumer" grade, at best. That said? The high end of the Technics line was some of the best of the era, too. Technics was the high end of the Panasonic factory. Sadly, the Panasonic ethic eventually pulled Technics down into the morass, and smothered 'em to death. And if I'm not mistaken, the JC Penny's "MCS" line, was a store-labeled run of lower-end Technics systems, hybrid-ized for the Penny's consumer. Late '80s, through mid '90s "Pro-Sumer" audio gear, was some of the most bang for the buck in the stereo arena, ever. Not the "best". True audiophile gear is the stuff of blondes with store bought tits, and bankruptcy. But that era's higher end "Pro-Consumer" lines.... absolutely slaughter most of what's on today's market, which masquerades as "audio" equipment. It's a research and self-education driven market, to buy wisely. But it's possible, available and affordable. Frustrating, fun and fulfilling, too. The cost to re-cap and update the thing exceeded the actual sale value, by a LOT. Damn shame. Needed the funds, more than I needed to hang on to the powerhouse receiver. Because the car isn't warmed up, just the water and interior. All of the other mechanicals and suspension bits are stone cold.
Posted by: Andi MacDowell at February 18, 2019 12:23 AM (ZMWtN) As indeed they are if you simply start the engine and drive off. But if you let the engine warm up, at least the transmission will be warmed a little, because the transmission oil cooler is in the radiator (in most rigs), and churning the oil in the torque converter warms it a little, too. And by letting the engine run until the windows are at least partly clear, you have the advantage of setting out on your journey in a warm car, with enough visibility to prevent destroying the car, and yourself, in a wreck. Late to the partee
Anyone who has a Roku firestick can get any streaming service. AND watch TV channels that are broadcast (all the networks, plus PBS and tons more "under-channels") simply by switching inputs with your TV remote by pressing the Source button. I have all the broadcast channels via good old fashioned rabbit ears antenna; Sling TV with ESPN 1,2,3 and 27 other a la carte cable channels (you choose); and Netflix streaming and DVD. Sling is just $30/month and works great, even for the national college football championship and super heavy viewer traffic. I love it. Also with the Roku you can watch Youtube and a bunch of other internet "content channels," too many to name. My only frustration is that Netflix has drastically reduced the number of classic movies that you can see. Some are only on DVDs, but there are a lot of great ones, even Academy Award winners, that they don't carry at all. A classic movie service would fill that gap. Total is about $47/month, which includes the Netflix. Posted by: Beverly at February 18, 2019 02:29 AM (XNWfY) 663
My fiendishly clever television viewing scheme is to simply not have a television at all. So I don't need an antenna, or cable, or satellite, or Roku, or any of that other crap. And, get this: Zero dollars per month. Cheap at twice the price!

On the "what the hell happened to us" at the end... Fashion, like all design, is fantasy. Success is based on if other people accept that fantasy. The great thing about fashion is you can accept only part of the idea and toss the rest into the garbage where it belongs. You can do that with most design, though rare is it you get to see the full scale model of awfulness.

Good Morning Midnight Morons. I have that Nashville Skyline album on a CD, plus two others by Dillon. IIANM I also have him and Johnny Cash doing a rendition of that song on a DVD of 'The Best of the Johnny Cash' show that I have. Now that is truly a damn good DVD. Also from Power line - Kaeperdick successfully shakes down the NFL --- I've watched a couple of the new Alliance league games, and it's interesting how many American flags and on-field group prayers after injuries I've seen. There is some comical stuff like having an attractive, slender young woman in tight pants as one of the refs, but overall I'm liking it so far. Regarding the woman ref, I'm not sure if she's there as a nod to Equality or as something for us guys to look at when she's walking away. Ref-wise, she stands WAY out of the way of the action and not right behind the defensive line, which is maybe something the Equality folks could ponder on if they think about it but they probably won't. And anyway, tight pants. Let me see if I have this right.
Colin Kaepernick, as a backup quarterback, protests the National Anthem at NFL games, causing a backlash that costs the NFL millions in advertising value. The NFL Team that he plays for as a backup quarterback, offers him a contract, which he turns down. He is not hired by any team, NFL or CFL, so he sues the NFL. And gets $80 million for not playing football from an organization he already damaged for hundreds of millions of dollars?
