"Fusion Ken" Dilanian: Neither Republicans Nor Democrats on Senate Intelligence Committee Have Found Any Evidence of Collusion Between Trump and Russia

This must be a hard thing for "Fusion Ken" to report.

After two years and 200 interviews, the Senate Intelligence Committee is approaching the end of its investigation into the 2016 election, having uncovered no direct evidence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to both Democrats and Republicans on the committee.

But investigators disagree along party lines when it comes to the implications of a pattern of contacts they have documented between Trump associates and Russians -- contacts that occurred before, during and after Russian intelligence operatives were seeking to help Donald Trump by leaking hacked Democratic emails and attacking his opponent, Hillary Clinton, on social media.

"If we write a report based upon the facts that we have, then we don't have anything that would suggest there was collusion by the Trump campaign and Russia," said Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, in an interview with CBS News last week.

Burr was careful to note that more facts may yet be uncovered, but he also made clear that the investigation was nearing an end.

Fusion Ken dutifully notes the spin from Democrat investigators, speaking anonymously, who say they never expected to find a contract inked in blood between Putin and Trump. But that's disingenuous -- they've found nothing.

What they've "found" is nonsense that was already public record -- Trump had made preliminary inquiries into building a couple of projects in Russia, then abandoned those projects.

Someone on Twitter had a great bit of snark about this. Something like: "Trump was exploring different ways of getting a building built in Moscow, and grew frustrated. Suddenly he realized a much simpler way of getting it built -- he would just run for president and win and strike a treasonous deal with Vladimir Putin!"

Ah yes -- it's so simple! It's so brilliantly simple!

The ultimate real estate development Gordian Knot-Chop.

Yeah, all of this bullshit would sound self-evidently stupid and false if the Conspiracy Theorists ever said directly what they're accusing Trump of.

It sounds pretty stupid that a man would figure that the easiest way to get a zoning code variance in Moscow is just to run for president and win, doesn't it?

And yet that's what these people think -- but they're never pushed to admit the details of the Conspiracy So Vast they believe in. They're allowed to glide on by with vague allusions and insinuations.

I put a bindle on a stick, walked a thousand miles to where they were building the transcontinental railroad, got a job driving railroad spikes into the hardened earth for 18 hours a day, worked my way up to foreman, murdered my boss and took his job as regional manager, finagled my way onto the board of directors, staged a coup and seized control of the rail company, formed a conglomerate with other railroad barons, then stabbed them all in the back and created a total transportation monopoly for North America! I parlayed this monopoly into a staggering fortune worth $15 billion, then with my money walked a thousand miles back to that store, bought it from the lazy owner, opened the doors, walked in, and finally bought my goddamned Pepsi!

All things considered, it'd be easy to cook up some Israeli Jewish conspiracy about Trump that would seem more generally plausible regarding both Trump in particular and Republicans in general. So much of the Republican party is reflexively hostile to Russia that it'd be impossible for any side arrangements to be made.

But the Pee-Pee Party Dossier and the Access Hollywood tapes were the final pieces of oppo-research fuckery that were supposed to nail Trump's coffin shut, when: *surprise* he wins.

I'm not even convinced of that.

I think the impetus of that is that one of the bajillions of political action groups who allegedly purchased facebook ads had six-degrees-of-separation from a russian national.

That'd be like if I donated money to some group in Azerbaijan who donated money to another group who ran some political ads on Azerbaijani Facebook and someone then said "TRUMP TRIED TO INFLUENCE AZERBAIJANI ELECTIONS!"

There's another theory, which is a bit more aggressive.

Simply: accuse the other guy of your own crime. Hillary is the one who colluded with Russians to try to sway the election. All she can do upon her loss and thus exposure to prosecution is to start hysterically screaming that Trump did it and get everyone rushing on him while she slips discreetly away.

I would like to suggest a solution to the false accusations problem:
First - The Retribution Act.
(1) Anyone falsely accusing another of a crime shall be subject to the same penalties as would be set for that offense.
(2) The penalties for false accusations would be additive per the number of false charges, and / or the number of persons falsely charges. E.g. Accusing two people of hate crime(s) would lead to two sets of charges for the accuser(s).
- admittedly this next one will be more difficult to enforce and more liable for abuse but something like this is sorely needed -
Second - The Media Accountability Act.
(1) Retractions must be made in the same manner as the original false report was made. (Same page/ time slot, same font / volume program section, same number of days reporting the error as the original story was reported etc.)
(2) Knowingly publishing a false report shall result in all responsible parties (e.g. lying reporters, negligent editors etc.) and / or conspirators (e.g. editors who required reporters to create false stories )the same penalties as the charge(s) they made.
(3) The organization responsible for publishing the false report shall lose its credentials for a period of time and be fined per the number and severity of false reports published.

251 The funniest thing about Newsom's High Speed Train announcement is that he vows to continue the construction of a high speed rail link from Merced to Bakersfield.

Merced to Bakersfield? LOL!!! But California is stuck, because due to the obligations Jerry Brown signed them up for, they have to refund $3.5 Billion to the feds if they don't build it, because they already took the money and they already spend it.

So, this is the Green's Great Triumph - you will be able to quickly travel from Merced to Bakersfield by train. I'm sure dozens of regular travelers are overjoyed. (California could have bought each of them their own private plane for what they're spending)

Yeah, that's one of the repeated lies that keep being passed around and its depressing to see it repeated.

DNC emails were not hacked. The only "evidence" presented was by an in-house private group that claimed they saw "Russian-style" attempts to intrude.

The actual collection of emails that wikileaks got? Someone stuck a USB key into a computer, copied them onto it, and carried the drive to wikileaks.

PODESTA's email was hacked, and they did it by cracking his impossible-to-guess password "Passw0rd". That was the hack

But the two stories get conflated and confused (probably on purpose).

309 No, it wasn't.

You're right, I had the timing wrong. The wall was built in 1961, about half way into Kennedy's term. I mean clearly it was in the works before that but they threw it together really, REALLY fast.

Honestly I suspect the main reason for the wall was because the American black marketeers were giving the Russians and Germans a taste of what they would have under a free market and comparing it to what they had under communism. And the Russians were very keen on preventing anyone from learning that.

Keeping people from defecting was kind of a bonus, since there wasn't literally a wall all the way across Germany.

384 I very much doubt the Merced to Bakersfield line will ever be finished, either - he's saying that today because he doesn't want to pay back the $3.5 billion, but Newsom has just told everyone in San Fran, LA, and Sacramento that they have to go on paying a huge amount for something that they'll never use, never see. Even in California, I think they're going to balk at that one pretty quickly.

(what they might do is maybe fund it at a few thousand each year so they can say to the feds, "See? We're still working on it!!!" and they can put off having to pay back the $3.5 billion for a decade or two)

385 This is the second Agnes to appear on the site today. The first a sacrifice for sin, and this one a homosexual trying to glamorize the occult while desensitizing American audiences to it.

386 372 350 There's also a report today that Newsom has cancelled plans to build three natural gas power plants because fossil fuels be icky. He says they'll produce that electricity with some combination of solar and wind.

I think I just figured out why they want all the wetbacks. They'll feed them burritos, and position them bent over in front of the wind mills. Voila! Wind power!

388 308 I know Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur) was, and Dick Sargent the second Darrin. But Dick York wasn't (I think). Liz Montgomery wasn't; she was married to Bill Asher then, and later had a years-long relationship with Robert Foxworth. Who else? Agnes Moorehead?

389 The high speed rail thing was stupid, California does best when they use their massive market power and GDP to pressure every other state to do the same thing. Like requiring special labeling in the state, which increases expenses so much that businesses just do it for all labels, thus forcing other states to have the same policy without any choice in the matter.

They should have done something like require trains traveling through California to move a certain maximum speed, which would compel all trains everywhere to be high speed.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 12, 2019 03:04 PM (39g3+)

390 324 The sad part is that CA could use a high speed rail on the peninsula and probably a couple other local places but it would have to be a completely different system and would be impossible to build in CA since the interests are so dug in.

The cal-trans line is crap, the light rail is a joke, and there certainly is enough demand.

The big disaster preventing this happened way back in 1966 (I believe), when all the counties of the Bay Area voted for bonds to fund a new rapid transit system (that became BART) -- except for San Mateo County, who didn't want to join in ith the rest of the area. So all the trains had to stop a the San Mateo County line, and not continue down to the San Jose area.

As a result, we still had to rely on the ancient CalTrain system in San Mateo County, which didn't even connect to BART at all, and the whole thing was a mess for decades.

30 years too late, San Mateo County FINALLY allowed BART onto their soil, but by then the construction costs were too prohibitive to take the line all the way down to Silicon Valley.

That bond vote in a single county in 1966 hobbled the whole region for at least half a century.

392 Agnes Moorhead was a great actress who ended up just collecting a paycheck on 60's tv, like a lot of great older actresses did. (Barbara Stanwyck, etc) She had a great supporting actress role in "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte", in which many think she stole the show from both Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland.

394 368 Moorehead was married to her first husband for 22 years.

She was a devout Christian and a conservative. It was supposedly Paul Lynde who started the rumors that she was gay, apparently in retaliation for her overt Christianity (she would read Bible stories to the kids on the Bewitched set) and conservatism.

I need to stop reading these behind-the-scenes Hollywood stories, esp. about actors and actresses I loved as a kid or young adult. I found out a couple of years ago that John Wayne didn't like Kim Darby when they were working on True Grit; he had no patience with what he called "Method" actors. Very depressing.

I got to see her in a staged reading of Shaw's Man and Superman in the early '70s, with Ricardo Montalban as Don Juan. She didn't steal that show -- but it would have been less of a show without her.

High speed is only for passenger trains, not freight. And there are no more serious passenger trains in this country, except for those already run by the government

Yeah Amtrak. Its not even a nice ride any longer, they dumped all their big beautiful old cars with the huge comfortable seats for little airliner style seats in little cars. Its just as bad as airline travel, but takes longer and you have to buy the food for 3x normal cost.

They know it wouldn't work because the train itself is the cheap part. The expensive part is the track.
